Spring is busting out all over and even 

the sun has been turning its swag on this 

March! Not that I’ve seen much of the 

daylight: Glasgow’s nightlife kidnapped me 

and held me hostage for much of the last 

month, and with plenty happening about the 

scene I was more than a willing captive. If 

Feb was an empty month then Mar has 

definitely made up for it! 

Last month I was the subject of a 

ScotsGay cover feature, and though I was 

proud to be cited as a live music presence 

on the gay circuit, I feel we can’t ignore the 

city’s live music heritage. As far as live 

music on the scene goes, most of us are in 

the shadow of powerhouse couple Robert 

and May Miller who still reign supreme at 

Merchant Pride. Their following is strong, 

and anyone walking down Candleriggs on 

Sun night will know why with May’s 

legendary voice booming out into the 

Merchant City. With a seemingly endless 

array of hits in their repertoire ranging from 

the classics to the up-to-date, you can’t 

spend an evening with the Millers without 

finding yourself inspired to sing along! 

Stopping by for a drink before my own gig 

in Delmonicas a few Sundays back, I 

practically had an eargasm as May and 

Robert sang ‘Blanket On the Ground’ – an 

old Billie Jo Spears hit I remember 

enjoying on my uncle’s crackly old LPs as 

a kid. There’s also buzz for Scene 

Glasgow guitarist/vocalist Angie Brown 

whose open mic and karaoke nights in 

the venue are the talk of the town. 

Checking out her YouTube videos there’s 

no mistaking the girl can sing and Scene 

is the perfect place to enjoy live music 

with its raised stage, lights, and state of 

the art sound system. The lady herself 

plays on Sun, Mon and Thu nights, and 

Scene has always attracted a high 

calibre of musicians to their open mic 

events. 

Across the road at Revolver, Tue night 

hostess Audrey invites us to practise the 

ancient Japanese art of karaoke and with an 

enormous catalogue of songs she’s sure to 

have something for everyone. With no 

breaks between songs, just singer after 

singer, the night is a relentless lesson in 

karaoke! Not for rookies! Nonetheless 

Audrey brings a relaxed atmosphere to the 

basement bar and if you’re lucky you might 

even get to enjoy a special performance 

from gum-chewing barmaid Bea Fiarce! 

I felt after giving a rather downbeat 

review of our scene last month I should 

focus on the good things Glasgow has to 

offer this time round, and, with TLC taking 

on a brand new Thu club night, I have the 

perfect opportunity to gush. Shaun Roberts 

is a cracking DJ and Mansion House is 

simply stunning. To set up a 70’s style disco 

space complete with ‘groovy’ barmaids who 

look like a psychedelic hallucination with 

their ‘Scooby Doo-esque’ uniforms was 

always going to be a risk in a city as nononsense 

as Glasgow. But with Scotland’s 

longest running independent gay club 

promoters at the helm, the gamble seems 

to be paying off. The night is called 

Liquid Love and the clientele 

comprises the more discerning gay 

clubbers. The specially reserved 

booths are like a ‘who’s who’ of gay 

scene DJs and performers who come on 

their nights off to unwind with TLC. 

As far as club nights go, gay Glasgow is 

beginning to experience a more diverse 

range of musical styles. Rock night

QueerCore has been running for some 

time now in FHQ on the first Fri of 

each month and it’s definitely a 

refreshing alternative to the Cheryl 

Cole schtick the scene seem 

obsessed with at the moment. Not 

that I have a problem with the 

nation’s favourite thug (oh yes I 

remember the toilet attendant incident) but 

as Oscar Wilde said, variety is the spice of 

life. The girls running the night are a friendly 

bunch whose motto ‘no rules no egos just 

rock’ is one they seem to have actually 

committed to. Guests at their nights are 

invited to request the rock hits of their 

choosing which is always a nice way to keep 

things interactive. They might 

want to look at building 

collaborative playlists 

online, as clubs down 

south are increasingly 

doing. The idea of a 

democratic club night is 

pretty exciting and I 

reckon the girls are 

discerning enough to 

filter out the silly requests 

to preserve the purity of 

their rock theme. 

Slightly off-scene, 

drag terror Lady Munter is going from 

strength to strength with Italo-Disco 

clubnight Menergy. Menergy is a collective 

of queer creatives and the clubnight is for 

now housed in Glasgow’s School of Art on 

the last Sat of each month. DJs the Niallist 

and Kid Zipper always produce a slick 

and seamless soundtrack at Menergy nights, 

and a cluster of drag denizens work the 

floors and doors creating a dynamic unlike 

any other club I’ve experienced. The 

tentacles of this queer and gender-bending 

collective are slithering ever deeper into the 

fashion and club scenes 

and there’s buzz already 

stirring for their summer 

bunk-up with gay girl 

equivalent Lock Up Your 

Daughters.

Hey folks, welcome to another monthly 

round up of all that is happening on 

Dundee’s gay scene. 

Out nightclub is going to be opening on 

Tue to take advantage of recent licensing law 

changes to ensure they can keep giving you 

the best offers on drink promos that they 

can throughout the week. Tue, Wed and Thu 

nights that means deals such as two Wkds 

for £4, two VKs for £4 or three VSs for a 

fiver, also shots from £1.50, double vodkas 

and dashes for £3 and pints from £2.50. 

Entry price on the Tue will be a measly 

£3.50. 

The fate of The Gauger is still open to 

much speculation, but it does seem likely 

that the doors will stay open as Joyce keeps 

the lease going. With Jim gone there will be 

a new member of staff joining Ross and 

Sara behind the bar, and as many have no 

doubt noticed, Paul has also joined the team 

albeit temporarily for the moment. So it 

would seem that the usual events will 

continue taking place for the moment: Ross 

DJing Fri and Sat nights from 8pm, and 

Brian on karaoke from 8pm Wed. The Sun 

closing appears to be continuing for the 

moment, although that may change. 

Along in Brooks Bar, the G-Factor finale 

was a huge success, and many 

congratulations to Sean who took home the 

£500 first prize from a very talented final 

three. It was a great night and a good test 

for the new light system and smoke 

machine. Cocktails have been proving 

popular, a favourite being the ‘trashed 

trannie’, and the number of bombs has 

increased to six, with the shot bombs going 

down particularly well. There is the regular 

karaoke with Brian on Wed, Fri and Sun 

nights from 9pm, and Sat Michael’s Mixes 

playing all the latest and biggest hits, and 

a Racing Night coming up on April 2nd. 

I was reprimanded for getting my 

days wrong for when Suzie does karaoke 

in the Abode, so apologies to anyone 

who turned up on a Sat expecting Suzie 

- I’m sure you wouldn’t be disappointed 

to have karaoke with Rubie instead! So, 

the correct days Suzie is on the karaoke 

machine are Wed, Fri and Sun, and 

Rubie on Sat. Food is now also being 

served Mon to Sat Noon-7pm. There is 

also a talent competition starting on 

Sun 3rd April, with big prizes up for 

grabs for the talented. 

Jocks Sauna still has all sorts of 

concessions and discounts on the 

door, normal price of £12 and half 

price for students, under 21’s, and 

anyone after 8pm open Noon-10pm

Morgan’s Pink Castle Philosophy Club 

is venturing outdoors again (in the hope of 

better weather!). The first of this year’s 

‘Walks ‘n’ Talks’ will start at Beauly Railway 

Station at 10.30am on Sun 27th Mar. Bring 

stout shoes and waterproofs! The idea is to 

have a local walk and chat, aiming to have a 

late snack lunch at a Beauly café. Meanwhile 

the indoors discussions continue on the 2nd 

Tue of each month at the Glen Mhor Hotel in

In Mar, the Highland LGBT Forum 

kicked off two new regular events in 

Inverness - a curry night in Wetherspoons 

on the 2nd Thu of the month (a great chance 

to have a blether and a biryani!) and a coffee 

morning on the last Sat of the month in 

MacNab’s Bar at the Columba Hotel on the

workshop facilitated by a COSCA-qualified 

counsellor for ten LGBT people from Moray 

and the Highlands and is now looking at 

options for more training sessions for the 

LGBT community to improve their skills. For

Thanks to Jason and the staff at 

Mambo’s Mexican Bar & Restaurant for their 

hospitality for the Girlzone lunch in Mar 

(always on the first Sat of the month) when 

we had LBT women there from every decade 

from 18 to 70+. Mambo’s is very much the 

place to be in Inverness these days - as well 

as being a restaurant and bar, in the 

evenings it hosts salsa classes and Rock 

Karaoke, not to mention the infamous 

Would Ya? Could Ya? Fri nights with party 

games and Sat night disco with DJ Foley 

Bear. 

It’s not often (if ever!) that the 

Inverness Courier features an interview with 

a lesbian, but in Feb Lisa Buchanan stepped 

forward to talk about coming out and 

working in the Highlands. Last year she 

spent over 4 months with the San Francisco 

Police Department and the University of 

California, Berkeley. As Strategic Diversity 

Advisor with Northern Constabulary, Lisa 

won a Fulbright Commission’s Police 

Scholarship to carry out a study into how 

the SFPD and local communities deal with 

homophobic hate incidents. Not only was 

the research useful for her day job, the visit 

to the USA also inspired her to set up an 

educational foundation in the Highlands and 

Islands to support the LGBT community.

these groups. Hopefully I will have more 

time in the future to cover some of the work 

that these groups are doing, but for now 

deadline is looming so time to say that’s all 

folks.

What if you or someone you know is 

targeted with physical or verbal abuse 

simply because of his/her gender identity or 

sexual orientation? The impact of these 

incidents can be significant and worrying at 

the time or even some time after the event. 

Hate Free Highland (www.hatefreehighland. 

org) is an online and third party reporting 

system to help people stand up and speak 

out about what has happened to them. The 

people behind the campaign include The 

Highland Council, Highlands and Islands 

Enterprise, Northern Constabulary, NHS 

Highland and Voluntary Action Highland. 

Since the campaign launched in May 2009 it 

has taken eight reports of homophobic and 

transphobic incidents. Many local agencies 

are involved and the two which act as Third 

Party Reporting Organisations with specific 

and specialist approaches to homophobic 

and transphobic incidents are:

There are of course many other 

agencies who can assist you with reporting 

and follow-up support, so if you’re in 

contact with your local Citizen’s Advice 

service you could report via them. Hate 

incidents are pervasive and insidious in 

nature and it’s important to provide a 

coordinated response to people who 

experience them. Whether you witness or 

experience such an incident - there is 

something that can be done about it.

now, and the shops have been full of Easter 

goodness for the last 3 months! Now the 

time is upon us, that can mean only one 

thing - Bank Holidays, over indulgence and 

another excuse to go wild on the scene!!! 

First up, at The Regent, the relaunch of 

the World Famous Regent Bar Quiz has 

been a huge success, with Quiz Hostess Mo 

well and truly getting the crowds going with 

a special brand of brain teaser! 5 question 

rounds and 1music round, with a £50 food 

and drink voucher up for grabs!! Next quiz 

will be Tue 29th Mar at 9pm then Tue 26th 

Apr. Free nibbles at half time for every table! 

And if the quiz gets you in the mood for 

partying, you could head over to Drama at 

Hawke & Hunter. Every Tue from 11pm- 

3am, these themed weekly nights are always 

a big hit with drinks promos and fab DJs! 

Those fundraising extraordinatires at 

Café Habana really excelled themselves last 

month, with their Sarnelli Orphanage 

Fundraiser garnering well over a thousand 

pounds! A great result! The crew at Habz 

would like to thank everyone who attended 

and gave so generously! 

Habana’s next fundraiser is for 

Macmillan Cancer Support, a cause that will 

touch everyone in some way. As always, the 

fundraising geniuses at Habana like to make 

sure you get something back for your 

generosity, and this time they’ve pulled it all 

out the bag! This huge event will be called

A new LGBT group has formed in the 

Highlands, covering Inverness, the 

Highlands and the islands. Formed by local 

LGBT people and two former Trustees of the 

Highland LGBT Forum, the group is officially 

constituted and going through the process 

of seeking charitable status. The Inverness, 

Highlands & Islands LGBT Group has 

already organised a table top sale to raise 

funds. Upcoming events include a quiz night 

in Mambo’s (30th Mar), a slave auction 

(date to be arranged) and an LGBT Speed 

Networking Night (4th May) to enable 

people to meet new friends. The group 

intends publishing a safety and wellbeing 

leaflet in the summer. The group’s press 

release says talks are also well underway to 

host LGBT health and well-being sessions 

for anyone who feels they may benefit from 

looking at lifestyle and making choices. 

Particular areas of concern include 

community safety, safety online, and safety 

and health information for those engaging in 

cruising. More volunteers or suggestions of 

events the LGBT community would like to 

see would be most welcome. Find the group

As of Apr, Highland Rainbow Folk will 

be a fully independent, constituted group 

with money in the bank! The NHS and 

Highland Council have already booked four 

training sessions with the group later this 

year.

and women. The nurses and doctors are 

specially trained and their aim is to deal with 

everyone in a friendly, non-judgmental and 

sensitive way. Clinics are held in Inverness, 

Aviemore, Invergordon, Fort-William, 

Mallaig, Wick and Thurso. They offer free 

condoms and lubricant, as well as testing 

and treatment of anyone with symptoms of 

a sexually transmitted infection, HIV testing 

& treatment, counselling and testing for

Waverley Care Highland is now 

operating a condoms by post scheme in 

Highland, Argyll and Bute. Condoms can be 

ordered from Waverley Care at their offices

posted out, free of charge, every month in 

plain wrappers so the service is completely 

confidential. This scheme is funded by NHS 

Highland through its contract with Waverley 

Care. In Apr, the new Gay Men’s Project 

Worker starts at Waverley Care Highland 

and we all wish Ian well in his new job. 

Queer up, as Lisa B would say! See you

‘Stars in their Eyes’, although more like 

‘Bars in their Eyes’ and will take place on 

Thu 31st Mar from 9pm. Bar staff will be 

dressing up as their favourite idols, which 

involves a few of them doing drag and 

performing on stage. The customer then 

buys a voting slip (money to charity) and 

vote for their favourite contestant! They also 

have a few members of staff from Planet 

Bar taking part! Should be a great night! 

Habana have entertainment on 7 nights 

a week. Penny Arcade camps it up both Mon 

and Thu, with Karaoke and an eclectic 

mixture of tunes. DJ DazGlaz provides the 

ultimate pre-club party every Tue and Wed 

night. Fri nights sees a selection of DJs, and 

Sat night the infamous DJ Bunny. Our ‘BIG 

GAY SUNDAYS‘ are proving a real hit, with 

karaoke right through till 1am and DJs from 

5pm in the afternoon! 

Up at CC Blooms, the many fans of the 

foam party will be delighted to hear that on 

Fri 1st Apr – April Fools Day!! – DJ Lucky 

Luciano will be hosting a foam party 

extraordinaire. Last year foam parties at 

CCs were massive, with customers even 

coming along in wet suits! DJ Lucky 

promises this will be the first of many this 

year!! Also, International DJ, model and 

pornstar Nick Wolanski will be joining DJ 

Lucky Luciano on the decks for this one. As 

usual free entry 11pm-3am level two. 

Other scene news – some of you will be 

aware that womens’ night Velvet last night 

breathed its last breath. Club Velvet has 

existed in some capacity for nearly a decade, 

and has been massive with ladies all over 

Scotland. Fear not though, the night is 

being taken over and re-branded by scene 

favs DJ Trendy Wendy and Louise, of The 

Street fame. The night will be given a wee 

facelift, with a new name – Saturday Night 

Beaver – ah I do love a good pun!!! and a 

new look. Things that will stay the same – 

still at the Speakeasy, still 10.30pm, still 

non-profit making. So the first Saturday 

Night Beaver will be held on Sat 16th April! 

Also on Sat 16th Apr, your local roller 

derby team – the Auld Reekie Roller Girls - 

are back with another skate busting, live, full 

contact, roller derby bout which sees their 

A-team, the Twisted Thistles, take on the 

might of the Rainy City Roller Girls from 

Manchester! Come and support your local 

team from 2-5pm, and watch the hottest 

bunch of ladies beat each other on 8 wheels. 

And if that isn’t enough, party with the ladies 

at the official after party, which is at the 

Banshee Labyrinth from 6pm. 

In other exciting news, on Thu 21st Apr 

- the night before Good Friday, which means 

no work the next day!!! – DJ Lucky Luciano 

will be doing something totally new and 

exciting, and running a trance and 

hardhouse night at CC Blooms!!! This is a 

long-awaited event for the many lovers of 

hard house and trance on the scene. It’s 

going to be very fittingly called BoomBoom 

and it’s pretty much going to be like 

Electrosexual on speed! DJ KRN 

will be on the decks also from

And seeing as there’s no work 

on Mon either, GHQ have a fantastic

will be throwing the MOTHER of all 

parties! Not only will they have a FREE 

hotdog stall; not only will they have the 

BEST of CCs DJs spinning tunes; but as 

usual they will have THE BEST live DJ set 

from a celebrity. This time, it will be a 

very current soap star who is up for 

sexiest male at the British Soap Awards 

on the decks!!! Stay tuned for more

Finally, in really sad news, Edinburgh’s 

gay scene was shocked at the sudden death 

of Arron (Tinkerbell) Haynes on 28th Feb, 

aged 20. In Arron’s 3 and a half years in 

Edinburgh, he worked at both Cafe Habana 

and Frenchies. Cafe Habana is having a day 

for Arron on Sun 17th April. The Edinburgh 

gay scene has lost a young star, who will be 

sorely missed. R.I.P. Tinkerbell. (Many

the tribute)

BADGE OF SHAME - THE REPEAL OF SECTION 28 IN SCOTLAND

n Tue 30th May 2000, the result 

of Souter’s much-hyped 

‘referendum’ was announced at 

Edinburgh’s Balmoral Hotel. The 

Scotsman noted how it was “the first 

press conference in Scottish political 

history at which bouncers on the door 

were deemed necessary”. The Record 

declared: “Of the 1.3million ballots 

returned, around 70 per cent have 

voted to keep the clause It means 

more people have voted to keep the 

clause, which bans the promotion of 

gay lifestyles in schools, than backed 

Labour in last year’s Scottish election”. 

The Scottish Sun had the same spin on 

Souter’s “£1million gay lessons 

referendum”, a point The Herald hadn’t 

missed: “Throughout the process of the 

referendum those newspapers which 

have backed the exercise have been 

fed information about the size of the 

count and the early voting returns in a 

way which would have been 

inconceivable in a legitimate, publicly 

organised ballot. Some newspapers 

announced the turnout weeks ago and 

result days ago. They will announce 

these figures all over again today”. 

With the majority of postings 

condemning ‘Keep the Clause’; at 

5.30pm that evening, the discussion 

board on their website was closed 

down. 

A “source close to Brian Souter” in 

The Scottish Daily Mail threatened: 

“The campaign will target the 

constituencies of MSPs who have not 

supported marriage and family values 

and if Wendy Alexander puts herself in 

the frontline she has to be prepared for 

that”. The irony of such a statement has 

been Brian Souter’s continued funding 

of the SNP’s war chest. With the party 

led by Alex Salmond who claimed 

religion was the driving force behind his 

thinking and who went on to chastise 

Tony Blair for remaining quiet about his 

religion, religious candidates are 

continually fielded. They would join the 

likes of Catholic MSPs like Roseanne 

Cunningham and Fergus Ewing, the 

latter who, when in power, would go on 

to hold private talks with Souter’s 

charity, the Souter Charitable Trust 

(SCT) – whose declared aim was “the 

advancement of religion” - to discuss a 

return to the discredited, proabstinence 

drug policy similar to one 

promoted by Souter’s ‘Keep the 

Clause’s’ David Macauley. Souter’s 

charity proposed the administration of 

neuro-electric therapy – sending an 

electric current to the brain - to addicts, 

a controversial treatment developed in 

the sixties by Scottish neurosurgeon, 

Dr Meg Patterson. Amongst the

religionists that were later recruited, 

Baptist, John Mason won the Glasgow 

East by-electon in 2008 before 

thanking everyone for praying for him. 

In 2009, Glasgow North East’s SNP 

candidate, David Kerr was revealed to 

be a member of the controversial Opus 

Dei sect and most controversial of all 

the religionists; Osama Saeed. In 2008, 

amongst many handouts to religious 

groups, Salmond awarded £215,000 of 

public funds to the Scottish Islamic 

Foundation (SIF); a company the SNP 

helped set up; led by Osama Saeed, 

the SNP’s parliamentary candidate for 

the Glasgow Central constituency who 

was campaigning to secure the support 

of its large Muslim population. SIF 

included other SNP activists and 

members of Saeed’s family. Saeed had 

been heavily criticised for urging 

Dundee’s Muslim community not to cooperate 

with Tayside Police’s Special 

Branch community contact unit and for 

supporting the restoration of an Islamic 

Caliphate, which would absorb existing 

states around the world into a Shari’a 

‘superstate’. Saeed was also a strong 

supporter of separate Muslim schools. 

Most of the SNP’s funding was 

earmarked for an IslamFest in 

Glasgow. SIF later received a further 

£190,000 from the Race, Religion and 

Refugee Integration Fund (RRRI) which 

supported organisations assisting 

ethnic minority communities despite 

being the only one of 33 organisations 

that was neither a company nor charity 

at the time they applied for funding. 

Osama Saeed not only promoted the 

homophobic ex-gay Muslim group The 

StraightWay Foundation but posted on 

his blog a recommendation for an antigay 

blog: Eye on Gay Muslims. Against 

sound professional advice, the site 

claimed: “You cannot justify 

homosexual activity in the light of divine 

revelation, and no doubt it is all sinful. 

Understand Islam properly, realise that 

even the identity of being ‘gay’ is 

problematic and un-Islamic, and repent 

to Allah, who is Forgiving, Merciful”. 

The SNP went on to offer Saeed the 

opportunity to contest the Glasgow 

Central seat in the General Election. 

SIF was later forced to return the 

money. 

The Record printed “fury over sex 

swap Liz’s NHS boob job”, a 

transgender story alongside a fulllength 

picture of “sex-change 

dad-of-two Liz Rowe” in a short skirt. 

The tabloid found a 41 year old mum 

who declared how she “had to fight to 

win expensive treatment for her son 

Gavin, a cystic fibrosis sufferer” and 

“criticised Liz’s op”. Unsurprisingly, the 

same story interested The Scottish 

Daily Mail which advised: “In a country 

where patients can lie on hospital 

trolleys for 24 hours, people are denied 

cancer drugs because of where they 

live and others die awaiting heart 

surgery, the NHS has paid for this 6ft 

rugby player to have a sex-change 

operation, then a new 38d bust”. 

Exactly the same 41 year old mum who 

appeared in The Record now appeared 

in The Mail to reiterate her disgust. The 

issue of Liz’s transsexuality had been 

dealt with some years ago. She had 

spent 11 years on waiting lists; 

sometimes on waiting lists for waiting 

lists. She was treated as a woman 

without breasts. From Jarrow, a 

conservative, Labour politician was 

given a sound bite on breakfast show; 

GMTV to declare no transsexuals 

deserved help on the NHS. Reports of 

how greedy clerics were creaming £45 

million a year off the NHS for their 

services were still some years away. 

Pictures of ‘Keep the Clause’ 

announcing the result of their 

‘referendum’ was carried on the 

national television news. With Jack 

Irvine pictured at his side, Brian Souter 

stormed: “We plead with the 

Government to respect parents’ rights. 

We will not allow the politically correct 

minority to undermine the importance 

of marriage”. It was then he delivered 

his iconic moment, plonking himself 

down in his chair in a gesture that 

hovered between petulance and high 

camp, a red-faced Souter thumped the 

table roaring defiantly: “We didnae vote 

furrit, and we’re naw huvvin’ it!” 

Simon Pia wrote: “As for Soapy, 

when he cried ‘We didnae vote for it 

and we’re no havin’ it’, close your eyes 

and it was John Inman in a kilt And 

for Wendy who else but Snow 

White” 

OK, the maths The turnout of the 

‘referendum’ was 32% or 34% 

depending on whether you included in 

the total numbers polled (3,970,712) 

the eight per cent of envelopes 

returned by the post office undelivered. 

Out of 1,272,202 returns, there were 

11,356 spoilt ballots and 11,856 empty 

envelopes (each about one per cent). 

The ‘referendum’ suggested that 

166,406 voted for repeal (13%) and 

1,094,440 voted against repeal (86%). 

Overall, this could suggest 70% of 

Scots rejected the ‘Keep the Clause’ 

campaign, either by binning the ballot 

or by voting for repeal. In the last big 

postal ballot in Scotland, the ballot on 

privatisation of water services in 

Strathclyde, the turnout was as high as 

71.5%. In the nuclear waste repository 

postal ballot in the Highlands it was as 

much as 69%. Souter’s ballot showed a 

disappointing 34% despite a much 

larger advertising campaign to 

persuade people to vote. It was 

estimated that Brian Souter had spent 

£2m on the whole campaign with the 

vote for retaining Section 28 barely half 

the claimed readership of The Record. 

Wendy Alexander was defiant: “Two out 

of three Scots voters rejected, binned 

or simply ignored this glorified opinion 

poll. More and more Scots have come 

to see that this is not about schools. It 

never was about our schools. It’s about 

the character of our society and 

whether Scotland is tolerant”, she said. 

Soon after the result, The Herald 

reported the results of a System Three 

poll, which showed a 10 per cent lead 

for Labour over the SNP, its nearest 

rival on first ballot preferences. The 

results demonstrated a very hollow 

victory for Brian Souter. From “Media

‘Brigadier’ Brown reaffirmed his oldfashioned 

and homophobic stance 

when he went on to write about 

members of the Cabinet dressing 

casually: “When I started in national 

newspapers, we were expected to wear 

dark suits, white shirts and plain ties 

But are we really ready for Peter 

Mandelson straight from clubbing in his 

Julian Clary gear? When they start 

carrying handbags, I’m changing my 

vote”. 

The Scottish Sun was not intending 

to take defeat quietly either and laid its 

whole front page out like an optician’s 

chart, demanding of the Scottish 

Executive: -

Posing as a bastion of the nation’s 

morality, The Scottish Sun editorial 

begged: “Never in the field of human 

decency have so many been so badly 

served by so few We told THEM they 

were off their rockers. Again and again 

and again and again”. But, “they put us 

- by which we mean the Brian Souter 

campaign, The Scottish Sun, the vast 

majority of the people AND our children 

- through the inconvenience of a private 

referendum And if the figure of 87 per 

cent isn’t conclusive, then the moon’s 

made of cheese. Honestly, the sheer 

arrogance of the Scottish Executive 

beggars belief. And so we had 11 men 

and women good and true sticking two 

fingers at us AGAIN, as if nothing had 

happened. These were the same 

people who approached every right-on 

organisation with an axe to grind for 

their opinion, and got it by return of 

post As Corporal Jones in Dad’s 

Army would have been quick to say: 

They don’t like it up ‘em. Well, they’ve 

had it up ‘em - one million, ninety four 

thousand, four hundred and forty times. 

We, the simple voters, may not be as 

smart as them. We may not be as cool 

as they like to think they are. But we 

don’t want our kids taught gay lessons 

in schools. And we told ‘em”. Brian 

Souter told The Scottish Sun he had 

been subjected to a barrage of attacks 

and threats from “extremists”. He 

added that a “live BULLET” (their 

emphasis) had been sent with a ballot 

paper and claimed campaigners had 

tried to block him and his family from 

making their way to church. 

The Sun’s political reporter Andrew 

Nicoll wrote: “It’s just one symptom of 

the touchy-feely, everything is allowed, 

mustn’t offend anybody, multiculturalism 

that’s so fashionable in 

Government now. And it’s tripe”. 

The Scottish Daily Mail was 

incandescent with rage. “SHAMEFUL”, 

they boomed off the front page, taking 

the unusual step of devoting a whole 

page to their editorial over “an 

extremely serious situation” declaring: 

“Scotland’s parliament has broken its 

covenant with the Scottish people”. 

Referring to the Executive’s 

consultation process, The Mail accused 

the First Minister of being “economical 

with the truth”. (Rich indeed coming 

from a paper forced to issue yet 

another public apology for an 

inaccuracy that appeared in a new 

story only the day before)! Valerie 

Riches from the controversial, Family 

and Youth Concern was wheeled in to 

squeal: “If the politicians ignore a result 

like this it would seem we are living in a 

pseudo-fascist state”. A full-page 

interview with Brian Souter under the 

heading: “A million reasons to keep 

fighting” had him explaining: “Family is 

everything” while an “electoral expert”, 

John Curtice, professor of politics from 

Strathclyde University added “Mr 

Souter has got the headline he wants, 

that a million Scots are in favour of 

retaining Section 28. I would not like to 

be in Wendy Alexander’s shoes right 

now”. In The Scotsman, the words of 

Professor Curtice took on an altogether 

different tone: “Brian Souter got his 

headline But in truth he got little else 

for his money For if a million Scots 

voted for Clause 28, well over two 

million decided to ignore the ballot In 

short the referendum has produced a 

low turnout and an apparently biased 

result. It is doubtful whether the 

outcome has done much to strengthen 

the Keep the Clause’s campaign”.
