Can someone please, for the love of all things 

unholy and impure, sit me down and explain why 

folk have such difficulty accepting that fidelity and 

monogamy aren’t the same thing? I don’t get it, it’s 

hardly a mind-bending, complex nugget to digest. 

They are not interchangeable concepts, they aren’t 

the same. Being faithful in a relationship has zero 

inherent connection to how many sexual partners 

you have. The connection is self-imposed. 

It’s that simple. 

Yep, we’re talking about having sex with other 

people whilst in a relationship, boys and girls. Strap 

yourself in for a wild one*. (*[Homer Simpson 

voiceover] Mmm, delicious irony.) 

Why do you care if your significant other is 

having sex with other people? Why should they care 

if you do the same? Query me this: what exactly are 

you proving to each other by pretending that the rest 

of the universe’s inhabitants cease to be attractive 

post-commitment? That shit isn’t strengthening your 

relationship, all it seems to be doing is building 

resentment and mistrust. 

Whilst I’d never, ever assume for a second that 

I know what works for others (because unexamined 

romantic fundamentals might work for you, I 

genuinely don’t know), I just can’t fathom it a 

sensible choice in how I conduct that side of my life. 

Lust definitely isn’t love, flirting isn’t intimacy, and 

sex definitely isn’t passion. As long as you and your 

partner keep the love, intimacy and passion to 

yourselves, where’s the harm in having your cake 

and eating it too? This advice goes for all couples, 

gay or straight, in any combination of girl or guy. 

There is no double standard here. Fear-based 

monogamy is a terrible foundation for exclusivity in 

any romantic relationship. 

Coming to terms with petty jealousy and 

insecurity is a tough thing to do, I get that, because 

we’re all raised to become such fragile, fucked up 

little monsters by today’s societal standards, I get 

that, but there’s little to no benefit, again, in my 

opinion, to locking yourself in a self-made prison. 

Look, I’m not saying people should be giving 

each other free-for-all passes entirely (truth be told, 

even I’m human and can get a little insecure, but I 

deal with it like an adult, I mastermind it and take 

control, for my self-worth deserves a hell of a lot 

more respect), my argument is simply that there’s 

more to be had from two people sharing a life 

together when they step back and open up a 

dialogue about fidelity, and focus on being true to 

one another where it really matters. 

If more people were honest in their 

relationships, and strong enough to allow 

themselves and the other person to pursue 

happiness wherever it may be found, we’d all be a 

little more grown up and behaving a little more 

rationally.

FORCED MARRIAGE 

For many people, your wedding day 

should be one of the happiest days of your 

life - but that’s only if you want to be married 

in the first place. 

Sadly not all marriages are made 

through choice. Sometimes family members 

or partners use either emotional or physical 

pressure to force marriage on people and in 

some cases, this can be directly due to a 

person’s sexual orientation or selfidentification. 

In the first half of 2012, the UK Forced 

Marriage Unit was reported to have provided 

help in ten instances of forced marriage 

involving people from the lesbian, gay, 

bisexual or transgendered community. But 

for many support agencies, this figure is just 

the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the 

issue, with hundreds of enquiries in the last 

six months alone, from people from the 

LGBT community, worried about being at 

risk of forced marriage. 

While for some LGBT people it may be 

more convenient to choose to marry, this is 

not the same as a forced marriage. In 

choosing to marry, both partners enter freely 

into a marriage that is mutually beneficial 

Farhan’s Story, 24 

“My family were shocked and very 

angry when they found out I was gay. 

They were violent towards me and called 

me names. My mother tried to calm 

things but couldn’t. I felt guilty that I had 

caused them pain and let them down. 

They made me feel as if I owed them. 

They really believed that if I married who 

they wanted, I would stop being gay.” 

Farhan thought he could make 

things better by doing as his family 

wished. He travelled with them to the 

Middle East, where he was forced into a 

marriage. On his return to the UK, 

Farhan’s father would not let him go 

without a family member or talk to his 

friends. His father threatened to kill him if 

he ever heard anything about Farhan 

being gay again. 

Farhan ran away and later tried to 

commit suicide. Through support, Farhan 

has moved away from his hometown and 

is now going to university. 

but in a forced marriage, one or both of the 

couple involved are married without their 

consent or against their will. 

Both men and women can be forced 

into marriage and many are under great 

emotional duress to comply as they don’t 

want to upset their parents and bring 

‘dishonour’ on their family. While family and 

relationships are very important to 

communities, if you’re being threatened or 

blackmailed into marriage, this is wrong and 

help is available. 

In November 2011, new laws in 

Scotland introduced Forced Marriage 

Protection Orders, which can safeguard your 

rights. Support agencies and local 

authorities across the country can help you 

apply for a Protection Order. 

If you feel that you, a friend or relative is 

under the threat of forced marriage, or if you 

are currently in such a marriage, support is 

available to help you make the decision that 

is right for you.

What is the Roca W+W? Created by the 

Roca Innovation Lab. together with the 

designers Gabriele and Oscar Buratti, W+W 

is a truly exciting new product revelation. 

We spotted this fancy multi-tasking 

toilet/basin by Roca at Napier Bathrooms & 

Interiors in Canonmills, well known for their 

cutting edge bathrooms, kitchens and 

interiors. It’s obviously compact and perfect 

for any attic/loft space or small flat, and its 

sleek design houses a nifty self-contained 

greywater system that is capable of reducing 

water use by up to 25% compared to a 

standard 1½/¾ gallon dual flush toilet, 

although in Edinburgh some people are still 

flushing with a environmentally very 

unfriendly 2 gallon flush! It’s a much 

trendier and elegant solution to existing 

basin to toilet greywater systems, and we’re 

excited that high design has embraced waste 

water management. 

Combo sink/toilet systems such as this 

have been prevalent in Japan for years, but 

Roca’s W+W (washbasin + watercloset) 

looks much more practical and introduces 

some fresh features. 

The system uses Roca’s “water-reuse 

technology” and also features an automatic 

cleaning system that avoids flushing bacteria 

into the unit’s built-in cistern, cutting down 

on unpleasant odors. 

The basin in W+W has two wastes – the 

basin waste and one further down the waste 

pipe. 

Once the basin has been used and filled 

with water, the user has the option of either 

diverting it to the mains (e.g. if the basin is 

being used for shaving, or brushing teeth), 

or recycling it by storing it in the cistern 

ready for the next flush. 

Napier Bathrooms M.D. Johnny said, 

“We were so delighted with this new product 

and its unique and impressive features and 

functions that we decided to install one in 

our own staff and customer toilet here in the 

showroom. It is awful that we waste so 

much drinking water to flush our waste 

away. Even if environmental issues don’t 

interest you, the W+W is perfect for some 

home interior spaces that would otherwise 

not allow a product of such visual presence 

or sleek and minimal wall-mounted design.” 

Finally people are starting to realize that 

using our heavily (and expensively) treated 

drinking water to transport our waste to a 

facility for treatment (where the water is then 

dumped into our oceans and seas), might 

not make the most sense after all. Maybe 

someday all of those wasted nutrients will be 

recycled on site even in urban environments, 

but for now we’re happy to see baby steps 

towards better water efficiency with 

exceptional product design.

It’s that time again, and at ScotsGay 

Towers we are aghast at how quickly this 

year has gone by! Hallowe’en fever is upon 

us, which means that consumerism will be 

100% focussed on Xmas very shortly! We 

will try not to overdo it here of course, we 

know y’all just wanna hear about the good 

stuff! 

Over at Planet. their Happy Days 

promos are going down a storm - with 

reduced drinks Tue to Thu. The perfect 

accompaniment to karaoke with DJ Fredstar, 

who is entertaining every Mon from 9pm. 

And don’t forget their crazy selection of 

over-indulgent fishbowls, pitchers and 

shooters, a full bomb menu, and Cilla’s Fizz 

by the glass. Now who wouldn’t want to 

sample Cilla’s Fizz?? Get rid of your Mon 

blues tonight by cultivating a nice hangover 

for the morning. And the Thu night quizzes 

are ever popular, with pop trivia and 

questions that won’t tax your alcohol-addled

so don’t skimp on the creativity. They have 

the fabulous Lady Razzle Dazzle on stage at 

10pm, with her ghoulish show to keep us all 

entertained. There will also be an exclusive 

Hallowe’en pitcher menu too! Money will be 

raised for Waverly Care, with Diva Idol - so 

dig deep folks, it’s for a good cause! And as 

always, Sun Karaoke is proving popular at 

Habz. You can come and sing your heart out 

(or re-enact a cat being murdered, whatever 

the case may be! from 4pm on a Sun, and 

9pm Mon and Thu - you lucky lot! 

Also at Habana, the HotScots Quiz is 

held monthly on a Mon night from 8.30pm - 

support our local gay football team whilst 

testing the old grey matter! The next quiz is 

on Mon 5th Nov, and The HotScots always 

seem to win - so come down and beat them! 

Someone has to stop them! Free munchies 

too, what more can you ask for! 

Over at Elbow, they are taking bookings 

for Xmas with their festive menu out already. 

Just the ticket if you’re looking for a place 

for your work’s night out or some other 

festive gathering. Get in touch now for a

Elbow has quite a reputation for their 

excellence in food so this is a great deal. I’m 

putting this one forward for my work’s night 

out! 

Last month, we pushed the 

BearScotFest - and now we can report that 

this was the busiest and most successful 

BearScotFest ever, with over 600 guys from 

around the world attending the event! The 

feedback has been very positive, and 

highlights how friendly and well organised 

the weekend was. Graham, one of the 

organisers, said that he was ‘’very proud of 

the involvement of the Gay community in 

making the weekend possible from Mitch 

and the team at CC Blooms, Allan and Colin 

at Nom de Plume, Stephen and the team at 

the New Town Bar and Jason Clarkson and 

his team at Electric Circus. Also home grown 

talent which included comedian Scott Agnew 

and the popular Glasgow DJs of Mishka and 

Corky. It was great to promote safe sex with 

the Order of Perpetual Indulgence giving out 

condom packs on Fri and the guys from Gay 

Men’s Health handing out packs on the Sat.’’ 

Huge accolades, and it’s always lovely to 

hear of the community coming together 

for a common cause. The weekend also 

helped raise £1200 for Gay Men’s 

Health, a very worthy cause - and Jason 

Green was crowned this year’s Mr. 

BearScots. Plans are already afoot for 

next year’s event. 

And at GHQ, Wonderland Saturdays 

and Lollipop Tuesday have grown in 

popularity. DJ Rueben Lowenthall is 

spinning the tunes both days and their 

new regular DJ, Justin James, is in the 

dance bar every Sat. They are also 

sponsoring BLOGS. And the fun just 

continues, with a Rocky Horror 

Wonderland on Sat 27th Oct, and Dead 

Famous Lollipop on Tue 30th Nov. So go 

along dressed up and show off your freaky 

side! It’s then the launch of the new ‘bottle 

to table booth package’ and a new cocktail 

menu. 

Fri nights have kicked off big time, and 

have been renamed Fabulous, because every 

Fri should be! It promises to be a fabulous 

camp night, with DJ Shazza playing all the 

Diva Hits and Camp classics. And every last 

Fri of the month, beginning from Fri 30th 

Nov, there will be a tribute show on stage. 

Thu Nights kick off on Thu 1st Nov with 

XXX Factor, hosted by a well known and 

loved face - this is a singing competition 

which will span 6 weeks, with the winner 

voted on by 3 judges. The winner will win a 

fantastic prize that will enhance their music 

career. This competition is open to all! So 

keep an eye out on facebook and twitter. 

And as Xmas approaches, GHQ have 

exciting offers and packages being released 

including cocktail masterclasses, a private 

room hire for your parties and much 

much more to¡ get you in the festive 

spirit. So keep your eyes peeled! 

Over at CC Blooms, there’s a 

Hallowe’en special ELECTROsexual on Fri 

2nd Nov, with very special guest Stephen 

Zaccardelli. It’s basically a huge fancy 

dress party with prizes for best dressed, 

so get your best outfits sorted. With 

residents Lucky Luciano and James 

Deans playing back to back as well, it’s 

going to be a very special night! 

And over in the Kingdom, they had a 

pre Hallowe’en 

spectacular last week. 

Everyone put a huge 

effort into their 

costumes, getting 

prepared for the big 

night itself. The 

organisers pushed the 

boat out, with a 

magician entertaining 

the crowds, and also the 

night’s sponsors The 

Body Shop handing out 

lovely freebies. Next 

date for the Fife night at 

the Jam Jar in 

Dunfermline is Wed 14th 

Nov, and then another 

big night planned for 

Xmas with a comedian 

booked. These nights 

are drawing around 100 

people a time, and the 

organising committee 

are hoping to rope Fife 

favourite Craig Boyd into 

dressing up as Santa 

Claus for the Xmas bash. Also on the 

agenda, the Out in Fife crew are planning 

icebreaker sessions before the nights out, as 

lots of people are messaging saying they 

want to come along but feel too nervous or 

shy to come alone. It’s all go in the Kingdom 

- connecting people! For more info, check 

out OutinFife on facebook. The crew are 

going to do a bungee jump to help raise 

money for the group, so more info on that 

too - which will also be raising money for 

local charities THT and LGBT Youth 

Scotland. There are now 2 youth groups 

running in Fife, one in Dunfermline and one 

in Kirkcaldy - so people aged 13 to 25 can

And now for the community bit! Over at 

the LGBT Centre for Health and Wellbeing, 

they now have two projects working with 

older LGBT people. The general LGBT Age 

Project, run by Garry - befriending and 

running social events. There is now an LGBT 

Age Capacity Building Project too, which is 

looking to improve service provision and 

increasing visibility of this often overlooked 

group. They are now recruiting for a variety 

of volunteers, and if you’d like to get in 

touch and help with this great opportunity

Describe The Riding Room in a sentence 

for people who haven’t been 

Cosy, intimate, relaxing, riotous and 

raucous. 

What’s your favourite cocktail to make? 

Casablanca. Which is a good thing because 

Nancy drinks them by the tin-full. 

Punters can enjoy a whole week of 

entertainment, what’s the best night? 

A bit of a toss-up between a weekday 

evening with either Tom or Rufus 

(showtunes or swing)... or a weekend night 

with lots of burlesque, bands, magic and 

all sorts in-between. Every night and every 

week is different so it’s extremely hard to 

single out one over the others. 

What’s your best moment in the Riding 

Room thus far? 

Being called from behind the bar, onto the 

stage to show off my completely nonexistant 

hula skills in front of a packed 

room. Now I realise why stage lights are so 

bright - if I could have actually seen anyone 

I would have bricked it. 

What can we expect in the future? 

Some new performers from far afield 

(some coming from USA and Europe), 

more limited edition cocktails, themed 

nights, the odd charity event or two... a 

little more gratuitous audience

So another month goes by and we get 

closer to Xmas. Good news seems to be 

floating around the scene this month, a 

happy but slightly quieter month as people 

start to delve into the Xmas wish lists and 

stocking up the alcohol parlour. It’s easy 

enough for me to write about the usual 

suspects this month, I could write about 

Underground, The Waterloo, Delmonica’s, 

Polo, AXM, The Court Bar or Speakeasy but I 

thought this month I’d take a trip behind the 

scene and delve into gay culture – in a 

month where gay culture is celebrated with 

the wonderful Glasgay! Festival. 

This year, Glasgay! As its brochure 

describes is about finding out how we define 

ourselves as a gay community in the 21st 

Century. It’s an exciting time to be gay for 

many different reasons – whether you’re 

looking forward to getting married in 2015 

when the Scottish Government legalise gay 

marriage or whether you want to be part of 

the debate on whether Independence will 

progress the equalities agenda – and 

Glasgay! pokes all my buttons this year. 

Their extensive programme, in which 

credit should go to Producer Steven 

Thomson and all the team that put in so 

much work and effort developing such a 

vibrant month of fun and excitement in 

Glasgow, consists of plays, movie nights, 

club nights, art exhibitions, comedy and 

much more – and not just in Merchant City. 

I was inspired by the choice of venues 

for Glasgay! this year, noting the use of 

theatres, cafes, Universities and even venues 

tucked away in the heart of Glasgow. Query 

Queer-y Night, hosted in The Glue Factory in 

Maryhill looked to be an exciting venture in 

to discussion and ‘probing investigations’ of 

gay culture by artists who’ve been involved 

in putting together Glasgay! It’s 

heartwarming to see such an openly gay 

event happening in Maryhill, somewhere that 

the gay community may not feel as 

comfortable walking about in Shadows or a 

lace-front weave. 

The festival, of course, takes us to the 

wonderful space that is Luke & Jack and 

The Virginia Gallery – a sex shop above an 

art gallery – what more could you want, 

separated by only a set of stairs? I was 

delighted to pop in to the venue to interview 

the two top dogs, Ian and Drew, about being 

part of the gay scene which you can read 

elsewhere in this fine organ. 

This year, The Virginia Gallery hosts 

Unit-E as their Glasgay! Exhibition, ‘a multidiscipline 

show… exploring the theme of 

‘unions.’ A very different exhibition with 

rotating pods and units, it’s an amazing 

exhibition that encompasses the theme of 

the 21st Century gay community, curators 

Ian, Drew and Snookie should be very proud 

for putting the work together. 

Lady Munter is back with her annual 

Fierce Ruling Diva’s Ball, which takes place 

as the closing ceremony for an amazing 

festival. The past two years have done what 

it says on the time, been fierce and full of 

ruling Diva’s, so I’m sure this year the 

Muntress will have pulled out even more 

stops to make it bigger and better than 

before. 

Musicals make up such a big part of gay 

culture – or indeed, they do for me. Glasgow 

is so lucky to get the cream of the crop of 

musicals – professional, semi-professional 

or amateur – there is always something 

going on. Glasgow Music Theatre are 

getting ready to put on A Chorus Line, whilst 

the King’s Theatre have just spent two weeks 

with Susan Boyle and Elaine C Smith. There 

is so much in Glasgow for musical theatre 

buffs, with a Sun on the scene being the 

best. Darren in Underground plays all the 

videos and music from the best of Musical 

Theatre every Sun afternoon, whilst on the 

first Sun of every month Speakeasy hosts 

Nancy Clench’s Broadway Night! 

Gay male culture culminates in raunchy 

sex, let’s be honest, and there is nothing 

better than mixing lube, naked bodies and 

raising money for Glasgow’s favourite 

charity Gay Men’s Health. Well, that’s what 

Elaine Belledehelle Blakely brought us in 

Speakeasy for another version of Lube 

Wrestling which saw naked bodies and lube 

in a paddling pool all for the chance to win 

£150. It went down a treat and it’s good to 

have fun whilst learning to wear a condom 

and use lube! Another fundraiser for Gay 

Men’s Health was part of Glasgay! The 

Bearly Funny comedy night at the Stand 

Comedy Club was immense with a brilliant 

line up, including Glasgow’s very own Scott 

Agnew alongside one of the funniest and 

most intelligent comedians in the gay world, 

headliner Jonathon Mayor. Gay Men’s Health 

is such a vital organisation, giving out free 

condoms and lube, hosting a counselling 

service and educating the gays on the best

A new LGBT staff network for public 

sector employees in Highland was launched 

at Eden Court on 11th Oct. Network 

members Dee Ellen and Liz Mackay set the 

ball rolling with introductions and exercises 

to ascertain what staff may want from such 

a network. Speakers included Liz Scott 

(Equalities Manager, HIE), Nicola Swan 

(Workplace Officer, Stonewall Scotland) and 

Kirsty George (Aberdeen City Council). 

Information stalls were provided by the 

Equality Network, Highland LGBT Forum, 

Highland Council and UNISON Highland. 

The launch was welcomed by Ray Stewart 

(Employee Director, NHS Highland) and Cllr 

Drew Millar (Chair of the Community Safety,

The dreary autumn days are setting in 

now, with the weather giving its best shot at 

dampening proceedings on the scene but, as 

always, we have all made it through the rain 

and into the gay sunshine that is the warmth 

of our LGBT community. 

Over the past month we have had plenty 

of events: from the amazing to the down 

right quirky! In Out we had the X-Factor’s 

Kitty Brucknell, who gave an amazingly 

energetic and powerful performance. We 

also had the highly acclaimed diva of 

nationwide fame Vanity Von Glow with 

raving reviews of her performance heard all 

over the scene, in Klozet with its late licence 

giving everyone extra hours of fun and 

frolics! In the Salty Dog as usual it was 

eccentricity to the max with the second of 

their new theme nights “Rocky Horror 

Picture Show” with everyone getting very 

much into the spirit of things – stockings 

and suspenders and feather boas and all!

plenty of activity. For three years now the 

LGBT Youth Group Allsorts has built and 

fashioned a safe, friendly and informative 

place for 13-25 year olds of all orientations 

to meet like minded people of similar ages, 

with many activities, workshops and guests 

from the likes of Men Only Tayside as well as 

other organisations. In their own words: 

“You don’t have to come out to come in”. A 

very neat little message that can also be 

aptly applied to the gay scene in general!

Cheerz Bar & Club have unveiled Ryan 

Jagger (pictured right) and Hazell Dean as 

their main acts for Nov along with plenty 

other events afoot. Ryan is an international 

recording artist, critically acclaimed pop 

writer and performer having played live to 

over 200,000 people on his UK Pride tours 

which have seen him billed with The Wanted, 

Basshunter, Alexandra Burke and N-Dubz. 

Cheerz are really excited to be having Ryan 

and 80’s sensation Hazell Dean as part of the 

lineup which includes a Hallowe’en Party 

with a difference on 2nd Nov with a cannon 

firing out Monster Munch and Space 

Invaders crisps. Who says Cheerz doesn’t 

give you something different! Also don’t 

forget that Cheerz is open from 11am Mon- 

Sat where you can pop in and get something 

frothy and a couple of fingers from Natalie, if 

you’re lucky she might even give you table

What’s been the best thing about being Sex 

Shop Owners? 

Drew: We prefer “adult boutique” or 

“erotic emporium” as we aren’t actually 

selling sex! But the best thing, I suppose is 

that it is not like working in any other shop. 

Ian: We get many people who just come 

in and buy one or two items and the 

experience for them beyond (we hope) good 

customer service is probably like any other 

shop selling any other products, but on 

some occasions we get to know regulars 

who come in and chat... 

Drew:..In a way that used to exist for 

past generations, in small local shops of 

yesteryear. 

Ian: We get to know people in a way that 

some shops would not. Also helping people 

find, without judgement the products that

getting training from Strathclyde Police for 

Third Party Reporting of hate crimes, 

helping out at Gay Men’s Health, our stall at

The Virginia gallery brings a different 

market in to the shop, how do art types like 

it? 

Ian: Actually a lot of the people who 

come to the gallery probably really aren’t 

“arty-types”, but people who love art, but 

sometimes may get put off, or feel excluded 

by the unnecessary mystique that seems to 

surround art. We are trying to create a 

supportive and enjoyable space for art, 

artists and customers alike and not take 

ourselves too seriously. 

Drew: The gallery does bring a different 

dimension to the shop upstairs. It opened by 

accident, an artist approached us about 

having a pop-up gallery and it never closed. 

It is exciting to again get people into the

the chance for some new and emerging 

artists, both Scottish and from around the 

world, to get a new audience. And also a 

chance for established artists to have a 

chance to explore themes and produce work 

that is not constrained. 

Ian: We are an Over-18 premises, due to 

the shop, and this allows us to have erotic 

art, art that may have other challenges. We 

are not a “gay gallery” or “erotic gallery” per 

say, but it does allow artists to be able to 

produce some pieces without fear of 

censorship. 

Drew: At the moment we have an 

illustration of a male nude that a Glasgow 

printer refused to print. It’s a beautiful 

illustration by Garry McLaughlin, a self 

portrait that shows an erection. We do not 

think it controversial in the slightest. But 

clearly some venues would feel unable to 

show this. 

What’s on at the Virginia Gallery this 

month? 

Unit-E is on until 10th Nov and is our 

second year of being part of Glasgay! 

Festival. Artist taking part in this group show
