<strong>South</strong> <strong>Carolina</strong>’s recycling rate <strong>of</strong> municipal solid waste increased 2.2% to 27.7% an alltime<br />
high. This may account for the fact that the number <strong>of</strong> recycling businesses now in<br />
the SC Recycling Directory have increased by 21%, from 175 to 211.<br />
7.4 GRANTS ADMINISTRATION<br />
Community Development Block Grant Program<br />
In 2011, the CDBG Program awarded $24.5 million for 72 projects in 59 different rural<br />
communities around the <strong>state</strong>, further improving <strong>South</strong> <strong>Carolina</strong>’s business climate and<br />
quality <strong>of</strong> life. Over 53,000 citizens will benefit from:<br />
Better living conditions for residents <strong>of</strong> 39 rural communities as a result <strong>of</strong> new or<br />
upgraded public infrastructure and facilities.<br />

Safer, more viable and sustainable neighborhoods as a result <strong>of</strong> revitalization<br />
projects or planning in 16 communities.<br />
Improved economic competitiveness for residents <strong>of</strong> 6 rural communities as a<br />
result <strong>of</strong> expansion <strong>of</strong> an existing industry that will create 15 new jobs,<br />
elimination <strong>of</strong> obstacles to economic competitiveness, revitalization <strong>of</strong><br />
commercial centers and new workforce resources as a result <strong>of</strong> new or expanded<br />
libraries.<br />
Residents <strong>of</strong> 44 counties will also benefit from increased <strong>state</strong>wide and local planning<br />
and coordination.<br />
