In ancient Rome, March 1st
marked the first day of spring,
which coincided with the
beginning of the calendar
year and the start of the
military campaign season
– which may explain why
soldiers “march into battle.”
Recognition of Student/School Success
School District No. 67 (Okanagan Skaha) extends congratulations
to the following students/groups for these outstanding examples of
success for March:
Columbia Elementary
On St. Patrick's Day, Columbia Elementary
had their Irish Fun Day in the gym. The
primary students spent the morning playing
super fun themed games and of course
cheering wildly. In the afternoon it was the
intermediate students' turn. Everyone had
so much fun sharing their wonderful
Columbia school spirit. It was a great day!
Read for Ranks
This year Kaleden Elementary has
partnered with the Penticton RCMP
department to encourage their
students to read.
As students accrue minutes on
their home reading programs,
they move up the RCMP ranks.
For each rank they achieve they
get an official RCMP certificate.
As an added bonus Constable
Christine Derksen and Constable
Tom Buschen periodically visit
the school and read with the kids.
What an awesome way to connect
to the community!

Jump Rope for Heart
Cathy Cunningham was invited to the school to provide skipping
sessions during the students PE classes. What a hit! Students have
been jumping all over the school grounds!!!
Kaleden Elementary culminated their skipping unit with Jump Rope for Heart on Thursday
March 17 th . Mr. Mullin (principal) agreed to let the students dress him up if the school
reached their goal of raising $750. Based on the picture it is what happened - but the best
part of the story is that the students raised almost $5000. for the Heart and Stroke
foundation. We are SO PROUD of the students! Excellent Job!
Naramata held their first Science Themed Carnival held on March 16 th . Everyone thoroughly
enjoyed themselves as it was a great success and lots of fun for children and parents alike. The
carnival was held in celebration of our province's 'Year of Science" theme and included many of
engaging, hands-on learning activities such as:
- How many balloons can you stick to yourself in a minute using static electricity (wear lots of
polyester)?
- Who can throw their unique circular glider the furthest?
- Who can ride a tricycle around an obstacle course the quickest?
- Who can maneuver a ball around the "Gravitron" the quickest?
And probably the most popular event . . . DUCT TAPE A TEACHER TO THE WALL!
Students purchased strips of duct tape to place across the bodies of two teacher volunteers.
Then the chairs were removed and voila, the teachers stuck. There was lots of science related
fun stuff like pulling a giant bubble up around yourself using a hoola hoop, making slime,
chromatography crafts, and much more.
A huge thank you to Deb Linton, Miranda Halladay and their team of dedicated parent
volunteers for organizing this wonderful carnival.

The Library Book Fair ran for three days and was very successful.
School sing-a-long was a huge hit. The students sounded great!
Their student led monthly assembly took place in March and the performances and presentations were
fantastic! Thank you to everyone that attended and to Mrs. Brown's Kindergarten class for a great song
on Enthusiasm.
Twenty of Naramata’s grade 4 and 5 students took part in an Action Schools workshop and learned a
variety of outside playground games. They will be teaching these games to the rest of the school over
the next three months.
The school choir has been busy practicing again and the district choir also recently met.
Mrs. Silvius once again led a school sing-a-long during March. The participating classes had a
wonderful time!
Science Day & Night was a hit at Parkway! Mrs. Silvius set up many science stations in the gym and
the students had a great day trying the new science experiments. Many families returned in the
evening to participate.
The gym was set up for circuit training for all classes – everyone had a great time!

Congratulations Lindsey!
Junior Leadership Class:
A welcome letter from Principal, Paula Reay at Trout Creek Elementary to Vice-Principal, Donna Moroz at
Summerland Secondary thanking her for a presentation (from the Junior Leadership Class) that they put on
for Trout Creek and Summerland Middle School.
The Junior Leaders of SSS did a great job engaging the Trout Creek students in a range of activities to
develop their understanding of self-esteem. The Leaders were full of energy and established a strong
rapport with our kids. I was so impressed by the way they spoke to individual students and
encouraged/supported kids to participate. The Leaders were very well prepared and comfortable presenting
in front of both large and small groups.
I know the program took a lot of work by yourself in order for it to run smoothly and to be so worthwhile so
thank you for all you did. It was exciting to see the positive interaction and learning that occurred between
these varied age groups.

Upland’s Elementary
A feeling of Spring is in the air both outside and within Uplands school. Not only are the buds starting
to come out on trees, but learning and growth are so evident in their students. Term 2 report card time
provides the school with an opportunity to celebrate their learning, reflect on progress and make goals
for the last three months of the school year. They still have so much learning to look forward to!!
Basketball has finished up for the season. We once again congratulate all of Uplands’ team members for
their dedication!! Through many practices, games and hard work, the basketball players developed top
notch skills which will follow them into Middle and High School. Congratulations team!! Grade 5
students also enjoyed three terrific days of cross-country skiing in March. Many thanks to
parents/caregivers for helping out!! Gymnastics is now underway with instruction from Manuela
Stegmann (BC Gymnastics Association). This will be followed by tennis for grades 2 – 4 students with
Joanne Bettauer from Vanchen Sports (in conjunction with Tennis BC). Cross-country running has
started up, as well, and Track and Field will be around the corner.
During the annual Uplands’ Spellathon, students worked hard to achieve their goals and learn to spell
new words. Approximately $5800 was raised through the spell-a-thon. These funds help support learning
at Uplands by sending all students to the Children’s Festival, transportation costs for various field trips
and purchasing many items for the school. During the assembly on March 11 th , students were recognized
for their spelling, reading achievements and fundraising. Congratulations are further extended to
Nicki Bijvoet who placed fifth overall in the Canwest Regional Spelling Bee and first out of the Penticton
competitors!! Way to go, Nicki!!!
