memorable events and activities. Thank-you once again to everyone in our school community for making<br />

these special times possible ☺!<br />

SAFE ARRIVAL<br />

Please contact our <strong>of</strong>fice at 250-770-7<strong>67</strong>8 to advise if your child is going to be away or<br />

late for school for any reason. Please feel free to leave a message on our answering<br />

machine before or after school hours. We also ask that you do not send your child prior<br />

to 8:30 in the morning, when outside supervision begins. All students are expected to<br />

leave the school grounds promptly by 3:00 pm unless they are accompanied by a parent<br />

or guardian.<br />

PLANNING FOR NEXT YEAR<br />

• Let us know if you are planning to move before September 2012.<br />

• If you know people who have moved into our area, but have kept their children at another<br />

school for the rest <strong>of</strong> this school year, have them register at Uplands now for September<br />

2012.<br />

• If you know people with kindergarten aged children, encourage them to register now for<br />

September 2012. Our kindergarten classes are filling up!!

CROSS COUNTRY RUNNING<br />

Our dedicated cross country running team made Uplands very proud at the Kaleden Run (grades<br />

3, 4 & 5). Congratulations to all <strong>of</strong> our runners! The following students placed in the top 10 in their<br />

category: Riley Hilton 3 rd and Matthew Thornton 6 th in Grade 5 Boys, Annabella Nordlund 2 nd , Allyn<br />

Deakin 4 th and Jennifer Hayman 10 th in Grade 5 Girls, Linden Sproule 3 rd in Grade 4 Boys, Kjera<br />

FUN DAY<br />

Uplands’ Fun Day will be on Fri<strong>day</strong>, <strong>June</strong> 22 nd from 9:00 am – 12:15 pm. Many fun and exciting stations will<br />

be set up for our students to enjoy and it looks like PAC is setting up an awesome concession. Once again<br />

thank-you to everyone in our school community!!<br />

BBQ<br />

Our year end family PAC BBQ fundraiser is Thurs<strong>day</strong>, <strong>June</strong> 14 th 5:00-7:00. If you haven’t received your<br />

information sheet and order forms yet and are interested in coming, please contact the school for more<br />

information as soon as possible.<br />

Fun Day<br />

PAC will be running the concession for the school Fun Day on <strong>June</strong> 22, 2012! More information will be<br />

coming.<br />

PAC Meetings<br />

The last meeting <strong>of</strong> the year will take place Tues<strong>day</strong>, <strong>June</strong> 19 th @ 6:30 pm in the Library. Hope to see you<br />

VOLUNTEER TEA<br />

Uplands’ Volunteer Tea was held May 31 at 1:30 pm. It was an opportunity for us to show our gratitude to<br />

all <strong>of</strong> our dedicated volunteers for everything they do. Volunteers play a vital role in helping to make school<br />

events, activities and programs possible. Many thanks go out to all <strong>of</strong> our volunteers,<br />

for supporting Uplands <strong>School</strong> and our students’ learning! We also congratulate and<br />

thank our talented students, who performed for the Tea.<br />

KIDS CONNECTION<br />

SUMMER CAMP AT KIDS CONNECTION!<br />

Kids Connection would like to invite all children at Uplands <strong>School</strong> to come to our Summer<br />

Camp being <strong>of</strong>fered from July 3 rd to August 3 rd right here at Uplands! You can sign up by the<br />

week for many exciting and fun theme ideas…such as Sports Week, Creepy Crawlers, Music<br />

and Movie Making and Photography Week! Many outside water play and beach visits too!<br />

You can attend either mornings or from 8:00 to 5:00. For more information drop in to our<br />

KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION<br />

KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION<br />

Children born in 2007 are eligible to enter kindergarten in September 2012. Parents, who feel their child<br />

is not yet ready for kindergarten, may defer enrollment for one year. Please contact Wendy Hyer (250-<br />

770-7700) at the <strong>School</strong> Board Office for information on this.<br />

Placement in your neighborhood school kindergarten is based on your address and registration date.<br />

The earlier you register, the more likely your child will attend a school close to your home.<br />

Register at your neighborhood school during regular school hours. A birth certificate, care card and<br />

pro<strong>of</strong> <strong>of</strong> address will be required.<br />

PENTICTON MINOR HOCKEY REGISTRATION<br />

Hockey registration is from May1 st to <strong>June</strong> 30 th . After <strong>June</strong> 30 th late fees will apply.<br />

LOST AND FOUND<br />

Please take some time to stop by our school and check the lost and found bin located by the gymnasium<br />

doors. The bin is currently over flowing. Items remaining at the end <strong>of</strong> <strong>June</strong> will be donated to one <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Service Organizations in town for distribution.


LIBRARY BOOKS AND HOME READING BOOKS<br />

Please be sure to check your home (under beds and other hiding places) for any overdue<br />

library books and home reading books. Please send them back to school as soon as possible.<br />

GRADE 5 PARENTS<br />

If your child has not had the opportunity to make course selections for their grade 6 school year please<br />

contact their designated school immediately to make the necessary arrangements for next year.<br />

BUS STUDENTS<br />

The early bus will depart Uplands at 11:50 am on our last <strong>day</strong> <strong>of</strong> school, Thurs<strong>day</strong> <strong>June</strong><br />

<strong>28</strong> th . The late bus (Naramata Rd ) will depart approximately 30 minutes later.<br />

LAST DAY OF SCHOOL REMINDER<br />

Just a reminder: students only attend school for the morning on our last <strong>day</strong> <strong>of</strong> school,<br />

Thurs<strong>day</strong>, <strong>June</strong> <strong>28</strong> th . We will be dismissing students at 11:45 am, as early buses will be<br />

arriving just after this time. Students are expected to leave the school grounds by 12:15<br />

pm.<br />

WELCOME TO SUMMER SCHOOL!<br />

As you make plans for your summer, please remember that summer school is a fantastic opportunity for<br />

students to strengthen the learning that has occurred over the past 10 months. Courses that are <strong>of</strong>fered<br />

during Summer <strong>School</strong> focus on reinforcing concepts and skills through games and fun hands-on activities.<br />

Students who have participated in Summer <strong>School</strong> in the past have enjoyed the time they have spent and felt<br />

good about what they have learned.<br />

Summer <strong>School</strong> courses will be funded by the Ministry <strong>of</strong> Education and <strong>School</strong> <strong>District</strong> #<strong>67</strong>. Elementary<br />

school programs will run July 3 rd to 13 th from 8:30am until 12:30 pm at Parkway Elementary <strong>School</strong>.<br />

* Please note: Registration into remedial programs (reading, math) will now require a teacher referral as<br />

well as teacher/principal signature confirmation.<br />

PENTICTON LIBRARY SUMMER READING PROGRAM<br />

The Summer Reading Club is a program <strong>of</strong>fered in July and August <strong>of</strong> each year, and designed to help kids maintain<br />

the reading gains <strong>of</strong> the school year through the summer holi<strong>day</strong>s. Participants keep track <strong>of</strong> their reading on a<br />

"reading record", setting their own reading goals and collecting stickers as an incentive to achieve them. Book displays<br />

on reading club themes <strong>of</strong>fer kids many suggestions for great summer books. Weekly programs are also held at the<br />

PNE<br />

2012 Fair at the PNE to continue with free admission for children 13 and under due to the<br />

overwhelming success <strong>of</strong> the inaugural year <strong>of</strong> the expanded program. The Fair at the PNE is thrilled to<br />

once again <strong>of</strong>fer FREE gate admission for all children 13 and under* during the Fair’s run from<br />

Satur<strong>day</strong>, August 18 to Mon<strong>day</strong>, September 3, 2012.<br />

For the second year since the 1940’s the PNE won’t be sending a free entrance ticket home in<br />

elementary school report cards across the province. Instead, children 13 and under will be admitted<br />

free with an adult throughout each <strong>day</strong> <strong>of</strong> the Fair at the PNE.<br />

”The expansion <strong>of</strong> this historic program was an incredible success, allowing families with elementary<br />

school aged children to visit the Fair on multiple <strong>day</strong>s and take advantage <strong>of</strong> the many programs we<br />

<strong>of</strong>fer for our youngest Fair fans,” says Michael McDaniel, President & CEO.<br />

The annual Fair at the PNE is BC’s premier summer time event <strong>of</strong>fering a wide range <strong>of</strong> new and classic<br />

family entertainment.<br />

HOMESTAY FAMILIES FOR THE 2012-2013 SCHOOL YEAR<br />

<strong>School</strong> <strong>District</strong> No. <strong>67</strong> is looking for prospective homestay families in Penticton and Summerland to host<br />

international students for one year, one semester, or on a short term (respite) basis. Placements are needed for<br />

both male and female students from Germany and Japan, who will be attending our local secondary schools.<br />

Host families must be English-speaking and have a desire to welcome the student into their home as part <strong>of</strong> the<br />

family. Close proximity to a secondary school is an asset.<br />

Host families are expected to provide:<br />

o a fully furnished private bedroom;<br />

o a clean, safe, caring environment conducive to student studies;<br />

o meals;<br />

o the opportunity to participate in Canadian family life; and<br />

o a completed criminal record search for all adult members residing in the home.<br />

<strong>School</strong> <strong>District</strong> No. <strong>67</strong> will provide:<br />

o support and guidance by a homestay coordinator who will monitor the student/homestay experience;<br />

o monthly compensation <strong>of</strong> $<strong>67</strong>5; and<br />

o temporary placement/respite homes for host families, if required, for holi<strong>day</strong>s and emergencies.<br />
