ADMINISTRATORS’ MESSAGE
The months of January and February are often quiet times during which we see much growth and
maturity amongst our students after returning from winter holidays. It is so exciting to hear the
sweet small voice of a grade one student proclaiming, "I read this all by myself!", or to see our
older students quietly giving advice and helping our younger ones learn a new skill. This year
marks the first 'Family Day' for our province, taking place on Monday, February 11 th . Hopefully you
and your children will have a chance to celebrate this day together. With the cold weather still
upon us, there is no greater pleasure than sharing our stories or sitting by the fire, reading a book
together as a family. Enjoy these special family times!
Family Literacy Day – We love to Read!
Students and staff enjoyed dressing up as favourite book characters to celebrate Family Literacy
Day on January 25 th . We had a great turnout of parents, grandparents and friends to read with
our students in the morning, and it was wonderful to see so many come out to celebrate reading
with us. The halls were buzzing with the sounds of children reading!

REQUEST FOR TRANSFERS
School District #67 (Okanagan Skaha)
The window for students requesting transfers from their catchment area school to another school in School
District No. 67 for the September 2013/2014 school year is 8:00 am, February 1 st , 2013 to 4:00 pm, April
15, 2013. Transfer requests received prior to February 1 st will be date/time stamped as “February 1 st , 2013,
8:00 a.m.” and transfer requests received after April 15th may not be considered until September 2013.
Although a sibling’s attendance at a school will be given priority as per Choice and Flexibility Policy #305, it
should not be assumed that the transfer is approved. A transfer request still needs to be completed and
must go through the transfer process. If you are unsure, please check with your school secretary.
BULLYING STOPS HERE
Bullying can take many forms, and at Columbia we focus on creating a positive, caring environment, where
everyone feels safe. On Wednesday February 27th, 2013 we will be helping raise awareness of antibullying
strategies issues with promotion of PINK SHIRT DAY. We encourage everyone in our school to
wear something pink to symbolize that we as a society will not tolerate bullying anywhere. This idea comes
from two incredible Nova Scotia high school students who took a stand against bullying by wearing pink in
support of a younger student who had been bullied for wearing the color pink to school. If you don't own
some pink clothing, make a pink badge or ribbon!
Looking for a fun family activity? Join other Columbia families for a hockey night. This Friday, the Penticton
Vees Game will be a fundraiser for SD 67 Breakfast Clubs. Our school no longer has any vouchers
available for students, so if you are planning on attending the game, you will need to purchase your tickets
at the SOEC events centre. Cost is $2 for students and $10 for adults, with a foodbank donation. Please
make sure that you let them know that you are from Columbia School, so that we can all sit together (and
perhaps win a prize for being the biggest/loudest crowd!)

KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION
Children born in 2008 are eligible to enter kindergarten in September 2013. Parents, who feel their
child is not yet ready for kindergarten, may defer enrollment for one year. Please contact Wendy
Hyer (770-7700) at the School Board Office for information on this.
Placement in your neighborhood school kindergarten is based on your address and registration
date. The earlier you register, the more likely your child will attend a school close to your home.
Register at your neighborhood school during regular school hours. A birth certificate, care card
for student and care card for parent will be required as well as proof of address.
Ready Set Learn!
Columbia School’s recent Ready Set Learn! session was a busy time for families. Preschoolers
had a great deal of fun playing with play dough and blocks while their parents learned
about kindergarten readiness and activities that can be done at home to further
prepare children for school. The highlight was when the kindergarten students were
the ‘big buddies’ and were able to show the younger children around their classroom,
and lead them in station activities. A very special thanks to our kindergarten
teachers, Ann Delorme and Bonny-Lynn Donovan, and our presenters: public health nurse Adelle
Jones, dental health coordinator Carl Gunderson, 'HUB' coordinator Leah Spanier, and community
children's librarian, Julia Cox, for being a part of this worthwhile morning.
