• Grade 5 students in Mr. Olsen's class have been studying a unit on Geometry this term. The unit is
from a new series called "Math Makes Sense," which all students in the district are using. In the activity
shown here, students were asked to develop a variety of prism and pyramid shapes/models using
toothpicks and plasticine. Judging by the expressions on the student faces below, as well their
products, they seem to have a fairly good understanding of the activity.
New Year with an exciting Student
Led Assembly. KVR’s assembly
was in fact a New Year’s Party.
The theme was “Well Being” which
had three components. The
students ran an obstacle course to promote physical well being. KVR’s John Johnson, Vince Timmerman,
and Jordan Findlay’s live band accompanied by staff members, provided the school with some great music
to promote mental health. The students then created the “You are what you Eat”, game show, which
promoted good nutrition. KVR’s School Climate Committee created, organized and planned this great
assembly and provided the entire school with some interactive learning activities.
McNICOLL PARK MIDDLE SCHOOL
Penticton student reigns supreme at spelling bee
By STEVE MACNAULL – Penticton Herald Newspaper
Sunday, February 25, 2007, 12:01 AM
“Hasten” proved to be the magic word Saturday for Leila Clark.
By spelling the word right, Clark, 12, a Grade 7 student at McNicoll Park Middle School in Penticton, won the regional finals of The
Daily Courier CanSpell Spelling Bee.
“I’ve got a blackboard in my head and I can just see the words written out,” explained Clark just after winning.
“I was nervous, but it was exciting nervous.”
As the winner, Clark received a $3,000 registered education savings plan from AIC Mutual Funds, a trip to Ottawa to compete in the
national spelling bee championships in April and a trip to Washington, D.C., for the Scripps National Spelling Bee in May.
It took 12 rounds of spelling for Clark to reign victorious over 42 other school winners aged nine to 13 from the Okanagan and
Kootenays. The word that gave her the most difficulty along the way was ‘vagabond.’
“But I just thought about it, saw it on the blackboard in my head and spelt it out slowly,” said Clark.
Clark is a straight-A student who won her school contest and the regional competition by studying words two hours a day.
“But I never studied ‘hasten,’” she said.
“I’ve heard it before, but I’ve never used it in a report or homework or anything like that.”
Proud mom Camille reported that her daughter has never gotten a word wrong on a spelling test all through elementary school”
“I’m so proud of her,” she said.
“I’m sweaty, nervous and shaky. She held up better than I did.”
Brennan Phillips, a home-schooled 12-year-old from Summerland, was runner-up.
“I spelt ‘ptarmigan’ and ‘reluctant’ right, but it all ended when I spelt ‘indebted’ wrong,” he said.
“I spelt it with an ‘e’ at the beginning instead of an ‘i.’ But I know how to spell it now and will remember it for the rest of my life,
especially when I get in debt,” he laughed.
Phillips also earns a trip to Ottawa to compete at the Canadian championships.
He also receives a $2,000 registered education savings plan from AIC.
“He studies as little as possible, actually,” said mom Danah.“But he loves to read.”
A total of 40 spellers — the winners and runners-up from 20 bees across the country — will vie for the title at the Canadian
championships. Co-ordinator Judie Dahl said the inaugural Okanagan-Kootenay regional finals went very well.
It will now become an annual event.
“It was a positive experience for all involved,” she said.
“And the kids had a lot of fun. That’s what it’s all about — making learning fun.”

SUMMERLAND MIDDLE SCHOOL
• You may have seen one of the many TV commercials for the nationwide CanSpell Spelling Bee. Did
you know that all SMS grade 6 students participated in this event? Students studied words from the
‘paideia’ (word list) which was made up of approximately 750 words, all originating from languages
other than standard English. A total of 15 students were successful in classroom Bees and competed in
the semi-finals. Winners of the semi-finals, Mikayla Hughes, Peter Park, Greg Nixon and Susan
Watkins, proceeded to the final round. The final round was a nail-biter! These sharp spellers had to
return for 2 additional sessions until Susan Watkins emerged as winner. Susan took part the regional
competition on February 24 th in Kelowna. She and 43 other participants, ages 9-14, spelled-off for 10
rounds. Susan lasted 9 rounds. She successfully spelled ‘zero’, ‘hoser’, ’falsetto’, ‘hippopotamus’; her
final word was ‘parallel’. She added a double r – oops! - and then the bell rang. The final round 10
went quickly. ‘Sustain’ and ‘indebted’ preceded ‘hasten’, which was spelled correctly by McNicoll Park
champ Leila Clark. Second place went to Brennan Philips (Home Learners School in Penticton). The
CanSpell Bee is a yearly event. According to Mrs. Haddow, who accompanied Susan in Kelowna, it
was an amazing, positive, and well-organized experience! SMS plan to extend their tradition, and will
be planning their third year in 2008!
CanSpell Spelling Bee
• Summerland Middle School PAC recently supported new technology with the purchase of a Smart Board. The
Smart Board is an interactive whiteboard, much like a big computer touch screen. The value is that the Smart
Board uses any software or sites on the computer ie: Inspirations software for webbing, Google Earth for
geography. Most recently Ms. Colquhoun has been team teaching in grade six classrooms using the Smart Board
in Math 6 classes. The problem solving unit used many interactive sites and students were highly motivated and
involved as they worked together to solve various math problems.
