Scholarships Shore Up Students’ Prospects of Higher Ed
Let’s be honest: Seattle University is an exciting place to
be right now. Alumni, friends, businesses and foundations
have helped SU tremendously through their participation
in our capital campaign. Thanks to their generous support,
the university has unprecedented opportunities to develop
new buildings, bring top-notch faculty to campus, grow
athletics and elevate nationally recognized programs. As a
premier independent university in the Northwest, Seattle
University has become the school of choice for many
aspiring college students.
With the increase in demand comes a need for more
financial assistance, including scholarships. More than 90
percent of all incoming freshmen
receive non-loan financial aid, and
roughly 75 percent of all undergraduates
receive scholarships.
Many alumni and friends of SU
are helping meet this need through
their contributions to the Campaign
for Seattle University. More than
$40 million has been raised for
scholarships, including $19 million
for graduate student scholarships.
This level of generosity has enabled
the university to create 100 new
scholarship funds and continue to
support programs such as the School
of Law Academic Resource Center.
“I wouldn’t be at Seattle U if not
for the scholarships that I receive,”
says Enrico Martinez, a senior finance
major. “These scholarships have
allowed me to attend SU without
having my education be a burden on
my family.”
Synthia Gounder, a second-year
law student, is realizing her dream of
a college education because of the
Academic Resource Center and the
Access Admission Program, nationally
known for its commitment to providing access to the
legal profession. The primary purpose of the center is
to support diverse and nontraditional students admitted
through the Access Admission Program so they excel in
law school and beyond.
“Some might have said I wasn’t supposed to be here,”
says Gounder. “After all, as an immigrant and a daughter of
immigrants and a first-generation college student, no one
in my family would have dreamt of higher education. It is
the wonderful program at the School of Law that allowed
my dream to become a reality.”
