Plan of Action A message from Steve Lindell, the new assistant vice president of Alumni Relations What can more than 60,000 alumni achieve when they work together? Great things. Becoming the new assistant vice president of Alumni Relations is extremely exciting for me. With our move to Division I and the success of our $160 million capital campaign, this is a fantastic time to engage with the university. Let me tell you a little about myself and why I feel so fortunate to be part of Seattle University and the Alumni Relations community. Prior to my current position, I worked in the real estate industry and consulted for businesses in the areas of customer relationship management, database management and Internet applications. But what attracted me to this position was 30 | Alumni Focus
my desire to do more for Seattle U, and I’m thrilled to bring my diverse talents to campus. Additionally, as a graduate of this fine university—Class of 1990—I am excited about the possibilities to connect with alumni of all ages. Seattle University has alumni in all corners of the world, and I want to make all of you feel valued and a part of your university. I want to meet with alumni and hear from you. One way Alumni Relations will encourage communication is through an alumni survey, produced via a collaborative effort on campus; you’ll find more details online at www.seattleu.edu/alumnisurvey and in this issue (see right). We will also seek to grow our alumni chapters across the country. If you’d like to participate or start a chapter in your area, send me an e-mail at lindells@seattleu.edu. I am planning several other initiatives that will enhance the sense of what it means to be an SU alum. We have the opportunity to mobilize a large contingency and demonstrate the Jesuit traditions of outreach, teamwork and community. We will increase our reach with our new Alumni Chaplain, David Anderson, S.J. Another goal is to foster more involvement in our communities and forge partnerships with our valuable campus colleagues. To this end, Alumni Relations is working with Career Services on ways to connect to more alumni. Recent events have included a Career Day and a networking and etiquette dinner. We will be teaming with Admissions to explore ways to further engage with current students so they know SU is there for them after they graduate. Because technology is integral to the way we communicate, we will be reviewing and leveraging forms of communication that our alumni will respond to. While there is much to be done and no shortage of great ideas, I am confident we can achieve these goals together. The task ahead is not an easy one. I would not be here if it were. My goals and objectives are lofty. Alumni Relations intends to be a leader, not a follower, in best practices. We will take risks. Any challenges along the way will only make us stronger and more driven to succeed. I am asking all of our alumni to communicate to me your needs and let me know what will motivate you to join me on this mission. Your ideas and input are essential to our success. Other universities may prepare their students for life, but Seattle University prepares us to do even more.
