Alumni F O C U S class notes 66 Eve (Gomez) Martine retired in 2003 after a 24-year career in the Issaquah School District, where she served as a teacher, principal and executive director of middle and high schools. Currently, Martine is president of the Issaquah Schools Foundation, a nonprofit organization focused on funding the education gap in the district. She and her husband live near the middle fork of Washington’s Snoqualmie River. 67 Ann McKinstry Gerner recently retired from the Office of Counsel at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Seattle District. She lives in Mercer Island, Wash., and enjoys sailing and the company of her children and grandchildren. Dianne (Grimm) Lundquist is retiring after 41 years of service to the Social Security Administration. Currently, Lundquist is president of Beginning Experience Los Angeles, a peer ministry to serve those who are grieving a loss of a relationship due to death, divorce or separation. Lundquist is also president of the Ebell Club of Irvine, and secretary of her parish council. In addition to her volunteer work, she will spend time caring for elderly parents and babysitting her 3-year-old and 7-year-old grandchildren. 69 Jerilyn Felton is the author of Four-Footed Ministers: Their Theology of Presence, published by VDM Publishing in 2008. Four-Footed Ministers is a synthesis of Felton’s two theses concerning Canine-Assisted Ministry and Pastoral and Spiritual Care (CAM/PS). Eve (Rockstad) Shreck, ’04, married Rick Shreck on July 26, 2008. The couple wed in the same city where their romance began: Minneapolis. Members of the bridal party included maid of honor Stephanie Whaley, ’06. The Shrecks live outside of Charlotte, N.C. Friends of Steve Manos, ’04, honor his memory in a special way. Read about it at www.seattleu.edu/magazine/. Jane Philips recently received an award from Memorial Hospital in South Bend, Ind. Philips was recognized for her work with breast cancer patients and in the treatment of lymphedema. 73 Don Whedon was inducted into the Minor League Football Hall of Fame at a ceremony in Mesquite, Nev., on Dec. 5, 2008. Whedon was a football player at Olympic Junior College. For more than 20 years he has been involved in semipro football throughout the Northwest, working in various roles, including coaching for several teams. 77 Karleen Wolfe was named as the director of Early Childhood Development at the United Indians of All Tribes Foundation in Seattle. As director, Wolfe oversees the Head Start and Early Head Start programs. A graduate of the College of Education, Wolfe also teaches part-time at Seattle Central Community College in the Child and Family Studies program. 80 Harlen Springer, MBA, was recently appointed chief operating officer of Boing Designs, a gift products manufacturer in Wilsonville, Ore. He has relocated from the San Francisco area to Florence, Ore., for the job. 82 Sue Turina Bangasser illustrated the recently published children’s book Billy the Bouncing Bee. Proceeds from the book, written by Stephen Lamson, will benefit the Ronald McDonald House. Bangasser majored in fine arts at Seattle University and was an All-American basketball player. She is one of nine women in the university’s Athletic Hall of Fame. 34 | Alumni Focus
Filipino Alumni Come Together In honor of Filipino American History Month, the Seattle University Filipino Alumni Chapter held its second annual fall reunion in October. The event included a special alumni Mass at the chapel at Campion Hall, followed by a reunion in Casey Commons. More than 50 chapter members were in attendance. Bruce Walker, ‘66, is the 2008 recipient of the Manuel T. Pacheco Academic Leadership Award. Currently, Walker is the Landsford Professor of Leadership and dean of the Robert J. Trulaske, Sr. College of Business at the University of Missouri-Columbia. During his tenure as dean, the college developed an alumni engagement plan and raised more than $100 million in private support. Walker serves on the board of directors of the Boone County National Bank and the Missouri Innovation Center, and is an active participant in the Heart of Missouri United Way. Donald Warner, ‘03, and Charlotte Sim, ‘05, were married Oct. 11, 2008, on the windward side of Oahu, Hawaii, surrounded by family and friends. The couple married on Charlotte's family estate with an oceanfront ceremony just before sunset. Several alumni were part of the wedding party, including Nicholas Thurber, ‘03, David Scarsella, ‘03, Megan Cromley, ‘04, Kim Scott, ‘04, and Darren Ebisu, ‘05. The couple honeymooned on the island of Kauai, Hawaii, and currently reside in the Washington, D.C., area. SU Magazine Spring 2009 | 35
