La vida con Cristina
When is fast too fast?
By Cristina Blackwell
cblackwell@laprensasa.com
So you’ve been dating for
several months and things seem
to be going better than expected.
In fact, you might even realize
that the relationship is moving
quickly, but there’s a part of you
that doesn’t want to slow down.
You love how you feel every time
you’re together and since the past
few months have been amazing,
the rest of your life will be perfect,
right?
Wrong! Although finding love
is based on each individual relationship
(and some move quicker
than others) when you move too
fast too soon, you become blinded
on what you think is true love.
“Moving too fast” is a relative
term. We’ve all heard of couples
who get married after knowing
each other a few days or weeks,
and have long, successful marriages.
But we also know many
that get too serious too quickly
and fail.
I’m a firm believer that when
it feels right, it’s just right. Then
again, what’s the rush? But wait
a sec, you don’t want go too slow
either!
Life123.com gives a few tips
on how to untangle this mess and
find your place in the relationship:
Physical relationships
If your partner doesn’t know
you well enough and things move
too fast in the physical aspect, you
might give off a bad impression.
Also, careful being too touchyfeely:
Your partner might react
differently to sudden intimacy and
feel smothered.
On the flip side, if you don’t
show physical affection, you
risk moving too slowly in your
relationship. You want the person
you’re dating to know you care.
If you’re physically distant, the
person might think you’re emotionally
distant as well.
Spending time together
It’s been three weeks and you’re
joined at the hip. If you haven’t
spoken/texted/called any of your
close friends or family --and, you
didn’t even realize it until it was
brought to your attention-- then
you might be falling too hard,
too fast.
Part of being in a relationship
is also feeling comfortable alone.
Not seeing anyone besides the
person you’re dating is a sign that
something is wrong and the relationship
might be moving too fast.
On the other hand, if you see
your loved one too little, you
might wonder if you’re even dating!
Seeing them once a month or
feeling as if you know little about
them is a sign that something has
to change.
Decision making
Can’t choose a brand of toothpaste
without your partner’s
advice? Get some independence!
If you’re making plans for the
weekend and don’t think of your
partner, you’re going slow and
are most likely with the wrong
person. Know the difference
between being independent and
being inconsiderate.
Think about how to spend
time with one another. Respect
each other’s interests and make
decisions together. However, if
one person is always making the
decision or if the two of you are
indecisive and stay in rather than
going out, this could be a sign
that the pace of your relationship
is off.
After some time dating, look at
the person you are now and the
person you were before you got
together. People tend to change
in relationships, sometimes for the
better, sometimes for the worse.
But, if it gets to the point where
you don’t recognize yourself, you
need to make adjustments.
The future
If you’re moving in together
after six weeks of dating, you’re
going too fast. Let things happen
naturally. If you force it, you
could permanently damage your
relationship.
Now if you’ve been dating for
years and years and the future
doesn’t come up, there’s a problem.
If marriage talk leads to a
fight, you may need to consider
some big changes.
‘Fishing for the right catch, it’s all
a State of Mind’
By Dennis M. Ayotte Jr.
dennisayottejr@gmail.com
Reeling in an ordinary catfish
with a Walmart fishing pole and ten
pound test line is easy. But, when
it comes to catching a prize marlin
you better have some skills.
I’ve been shot down more times
attempting to hit on a female considered
a”10” a.k.a. a “marlin,”
than Screech and Urkel combined.
My weak approach usually started
with me fumbling my words as my
insecurities ran rampant in my head
La Comisión 16 de Septiembre,
junto a otras organizaciones ha
organizado múltiples eventos para
conmemorar y celebrar las Fiestas
Patrias de México.
A lo largo de casi tres meses
habrá diversos eventos educativos,
de entretenimiento y culturales
gratuitos, para que chicos y grandes
de nuestra ciudad puedan celebrar el
bicentenario de la independencia de
México y el centenario de la revolución
mexicana al máximo.
La Oficina de Asuntos Culturales
Asociación de la Avenida Guadalupe,
El Consulado de México en
San Antonio, y el Instituto Cultural
de México se unieron a dicha celebración.
La cadena de eventos comenzó
este jueves con una conferencia
de prensa, donde se dieron cita
miembros de las distintas entidades
participantes. También se dieron a
conocer los variados eventos que
I have MAN[y] Issues
while I sweat like I just ran a 5K
race. When I’m hitting on “fives”
and “sixes” (catfish), it’s no sweat.
The fact that I don’t have the best
job or the nicest car doesn’t affect
my ability to be my witty self, and
my insecurities instantly vanish.
I automatically transform into the
most interesting man in the world.
It’s not because I’m double fisting
Dos XX’s. It’s because I’m not
as worried about them judging me.
The more attractive the woman the
more intimidated we become. We
put ‘10s’ on a pedestal and the
mere sight of them makes us choke
up worse than Roger Clemens in
front of Congress. Remember when
Urkel morphed into Stefan and
finally won Laura’s heart, Laura
was the same girl, yet Urkel’s fears
of rejection and insecurities didn’t
get the best of him because he had
confidence as Stefan.
It’s all a state of mind. When you
want to catch that marlin you must
treat it like any other fish and have
confidence. If you’re worried about
the fact you’re too short or older,
you don’t have the best physique
or a fat bank account, stop. Take
comfort in Shakespeare, “To thine
own self be true,” which in modern
3-E
lingo translates to “You don’t have
to lie to kick it.”
A woman ultimately will like you
for who you are. Sure, your looks
will play a role but don’t let insecurities
hold you back. Act as if you
have no worries and carry yourself
with a little swagger. Don’t ever
lie, just be you. I’ve been lucky to
date some amazing girls and grow
up around many incredible ladies in
my family. From them I’ve learned
women value security (physical and
emotional), honesty, a man with
ambition and someone who can
make them laugh.
I’m sure diamonds were on the
list too but don’t go out do some
steroids, get in touch with your
feminine side, confess all your
secrets, practice a comedy bit and
rob a jewelry store in order to impress
the next girl you take out. Be
yourself—an authentic man with
a sincere interest in a woman will
supersede any phony game you
could throw out there. Let your real
personality shine and the rest will
take care of itself.
Females have a sixth sense for
pretentiousness and there is a fine
line between confidence and arrogance,
so don’t be the latter or two.
Picks of the Week
“Tommy, the Movie” [Blu-ray] (PG)
Oliver Reed, Ann-Margret and
Roger Daltrey star in Ken Russell’s
trippy production of The Who’s
legendary rock opera about a boy
who becomes deaf, dumb and blind
after catching his mother having an
affair. Despite failed attempts by
doctors and drug dealers to cure him
and frequent episodes of physical
abuse, Tommy grows up to become
a Pinball Wizard and leader of a
religious cult. With over-the-top performances
from Tina Turner, Jack
Nicholson, Keith Moon and Elton
John, this 1975 rockstravaganza
(yeah, I said it!) shifts frantically between
high camp, low art and electric
mayhem. Fans of Ann-Margret
will also enjoy the musical number
where she wears a crocheted catsuit
and writhes seductively amongst
a tsunami of chocolate and baked
beans. Mee-ow!
“Playing For Time” (Unrated)
Based on the autobiography of
Fania Fénelon, this Arthur Millerpenned
1980 production about the
musicians of Auschwitz is possibly
the best Holocaust film made for
television. Vanessa Redgrave won
an Emmy for her portrayal of Fénelon,
a reknowned Jewish pianist
who is spared from hard labor and
placed in the death camp’s female
orchestra, where she and the other
musicians are forced to play for
their captors. “Playing For Time”
is a heart-wrenching and powerful
drama you simply must experience.
Peanuts
And last but not least, two classic
Peanuts TV specials are being
released on Blu-Ray this week:
“It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie
Brown” and “A Charlie Brown
Thanksgiving.”
DOG OF THE WEEK
“MacGruber” Unrated Edition
Comedy is subjective. One person’s
laugh-riot can be a dreadful,
tedious bore to another. So how
can you know if “MacGruber” is
the comedy film for you? Easy, just
take this simple quiz: 1. Are you a
boy between the ages of
10 and 10-and-a-half? 2. Do
Elton John
you have the IQ of a small sack of
soggy, dead field mice? 3. Are you
a resident of Idaho and are a potato
or some species of weevil? If you
answered “Yes” to any of the previous
questions, then “MacGruber”
is just your comedy speed. “Mac-
Gruber” is based on a series of tired,
one-gag “SNL” sketches parodying
the old “MacGyver” TV show,
and the latest in a 30-year parade
of horrible films based on “SNL”
sketches (“It’s Pat!” anyone?).
Will Forte stars as MacGruber, an
ex-special forces guy who comes
out of retirement to thwart the evil
machinations of Dieter Von Cunth
(Val Kilmer), a mercenary who has
stolen a nuclear bomb and is trying
to retrieve the launch codes. The fact
that the villain of the film is named
Cunth pretty much sums up the high
comedic standards of this film. Seriously,
it’s not even worth a rental.
Movie: “The American”
Rating: R (Violence / Sexual
Content)
Studio: Focus Features
Where I Saw It: Santikos
Bijou
The lights came up in the darkened
theater and I looked over at
Kiko, my fellow film critic. He
stared back and we just gave each
other that cynical grin that only another
critic can understand. I broke
the silence first, “Okay, I changed
my mind, you can say it sucks.”
Kiko laughed in agreement.
I had high hopes for “The American,”
I really did. After all, it stars
Academy Award winner, George
Clooney, and who doesn’t like
George Clooney?
I’m not lying when I tell you
that I truly wanted to like this film.
I mean, it’s my favorite genre, a
suspense thriller. In the first seconds
of the film, the credits were
bland, stuck to the bottom of the
screen. “Ah, artistic and simple,” I
thought to myself. The first scene
opened up to a majestic Swedish
countryside enveloped in tempting
crisp snow. “Yes, loving it,” I
said to myself. Then…it just went
downhill.
Clooney plays Jack, a mysterious
assassin who is always
alone. After, what we assume is
a personal vacation of sorts, goes
very wrong, Jack ends up on the
run. While hiding out in a small
Italian village, he receives another
assignment from his European
handler. All the while, he does his
best to keep his cover as a traveling
photographer.
Of course, other than using his
camera to spy on his new love
interest, he never once seems to
even try and pretend to take any
pictures at all. I really don’t want
to trash this film but there was so
much that annoyed me.
Look, I’m no 007 but I think this
assassin broke every major rule of
being a spy, including sitting by
wide-open windows, sitting with
his back to the street instead of to
a wall, and ignoring the fact that
there is a completely out-of-place
Swedish killer stalking him outside
of the bar he frequents. Seriously?
I understand that the film is an
adaptation of the 1990’s novel,
“A Very Private Gentleman” by
Martin Booth. So, in a sense, the
movie had to be relatively honest in
regards to the original story. I even
respect director Anton Corbijn (of
music video directing fame) for
trying to make the film as visually
enticing as he did.
What troubles me is that the
film just did not translate well to
the screen. That the name of the
movie, “The American,” turned out
to be an ironic twist because I just
don’t think the American audience
will get it. Unless, you’ve read and
liked the book, I doubt you will
enjoy this movie.
I’ll say this; it’s an artistic film
with great locations and scenery.
There are a couple of well-shot
romantic scenes with Clooney’s
love interest that help to ease the
boredom and a great cameo role by
a local priest that Jack befriends. In
fact, I think the priest manages to
steal the movie. Other than that, I
won’t be adding this movie to my
DVD collection and I definitely
won’t be recommending it to you.
So, is it good? Watch it and you
decide!
Machete proves to be
the whole enchilada
By Ramón Hernández
As hundreds of people exited
the Alamo Quarry theater, they
were asked by a Regal Cinema
representative how they rated the
movie. Comments ranged from
cartoonish and campy, to great
excellent and even awesome.
“I thought it was cheesy,” said
Nanci Ann Bastian about the
movie.
However, others were a bit
offended. “I personally found
it insensitive and disrespectful.
They purposefully turned it into
a hilariously funny movie instead
of addressing the real issues and
making it true to life,” commented
Tammy Huerta Mallini.
“All they did was make more fun
of us,” she added.
Nonetheless, I found it to be
filled with self effacing humor
some satire, irony and plenty of
tongue-in-cheek humor.
They say laughter is the best
medicine, and there was a theater
full of Latinos who laughed
wholeheartedly at ethnic jokes,
when in any other situation they
might have found them offensive.
As Senator McLaughlin, Robert
De Niro got away with calling
Chicanos and Mexicans cockroaches,
parasites and making
speeches that in real-life would
most likely get him killed.
Danny Trejo is a perfect fit for
the role of Machete, a ruthless
killing machine who demonstrates
his skill with the machete.
In the movie, Trejo proves
to be a Don Juan, surrounded
by beautiful women of all ages
such as San Antonio-born Mayte
Michelle Rodríguez, 29-year-old
Jessica Marie Alba, Galvestonnative
Alicia Rachel Marek and
24-year-old Lindsay Lohan.
El Paso-native and now San
Antonio’s own Ara Celi plays
the part of the classy television
anchor who confronts and puts
De Niro in his place.
Also featured in the film is
actor and longtime comedian
Cheech Marín, who plays the role
of a priest.
Steven Seagal is especially
hilarious in the role of Torrez.
Seagal mocks a drug lord who
uses Spanish-language curse
words that many would normally
find vulgar and lewd.
In summary, this movie has it
all, action, gory blood and guts
scenes, a low-rider invasion,
some sexy scenes and lots of
characters Mexican-Americans
will certainly relate to. Therefore,
I will highly recommend
the movie.
“El infame Juan Manuel”
septiembre 5, 2010
Por Bruno Estañol
-Soy el infame Juan Manuel,
dijo, y habito en el infierno. Es
el único lugar en el que quiero
estar. Al final le diré por qué.
Toda mi vida terrestre la ocupé
en la búsqueda de un tesoro.
Desde niño tuve esta idea fija.
Sabía todo de los bucaneros y
los grandes tesoros de todos los
países. El tesoro de Moctezuma,
el que abandonó Cortés en la
gran Tenochtitlán la noche triste,
era el que más consumía mi
imaginación, pero otros tesoros
también la consumían. Compré
mapas apócrifos y verdaderos,
mapas astrosos y amarillos, sobados
por innumerables dedos a
lo largo de los siglos, mapas con
arena de mar para dar fe de su
origen verdadero, mapas cifrados,
mapas que sólo se podían
ver a trasluz; mapas vendidos
hace muchos años en una tienda
de antigüedades del Cairo o de
Londres.
Escarbé en la campiña y en
los cementerios, en los cerros,
en los campos de trigo, de maíz
y de arroz. Destruí las paredes
de mi casa, exploré pozos profundos,
fatigué las playas donde
los bucaneros dejaron el oro en
El programa artístico comenzará a
las 6:45 p.m. seguido por la ceremonia
oficial, la entrada será gratuita.
De la misma manera se presentará
el vigesimonoveno Desfile 16
de Septiembre en la Avenida Plaza
Guadalupe. Ana María Canseco,
presentadora del programa Despierta
América, será la invitada
especial junto con la agrupación
Los Desperadoz. Éste desfile será
el sábado 18 de septiembre y se
acompañará de otros eventos, los
cuales comenzarán a partir de las
8:30 a.m. Además habrá una puesta
en escena y un concierto para
festejar la revolución en el mes de
octubre y noviembre.
doblones, lingotes, joyas quintadas,
en altares, en utensilios
para comer, en amuletos. Me
olvidé de mujeres, de hijos, de
hermanos, de padres, de fiestas,
de libros, de amigos, y pasé
penurias y hambres. Siempre
me imaginaba, sentado en mi
habitación, contando las doblas
y luises de oro, cuidadosamente
apiladas sobre la mesa, con el
pecho lleno de una inagotable y
dilatada felicidad; los años pasaban
y no encontraba el oro cantarín
y ya veía venir a la muerte
con apresurados pasos; iba a los
cementerios, a la llanura y a los
bosques, en noches de luna llena,
a invocar al diablo para que me
ayudara a encontrarlo, pero este
no se dignaba aparecer y ni siquiera
a darme alguna pista; comprendí
que el diablo no existía
y fui cayendo en una melancolía
profunda; me daba cuenta que
había malgastado mi vida, mi
salud, mi dinero.
Una noche, para tratar de
distraerme, fui al teatro; por
ratos dormitaba y mientras veía
la pieza pensaba en el tesoro
mientras observaba a los actores
moviéndose como sombras; en
la penumbra un hombre se sentó
a mi lado; de reojo percibí sus
ropas lujosas y un monóculo
16 de Septiembre ....... (viene de página 3-E)
sobre el ojo izquierdo; no parece
muy divertido, dijo en voz baja y
hablándome al oído, los actores
no están buscando ningún tesoro
ni haciendo ningún pacto con el
diablo, tal vez esto le divierta
más; acto seguido puso en mi
regazo dos largos sobres de papel
manila; inmediatamente los miré:
un sobre estaba rotulado con
letra gótica: Instrucciones para
encontrar el tesoro, el otro decía,
Instrucciones para después de
encontrar el tesoro, ¡importante!
Abrir inmediatamente después de
encontrar el tesoro, por ningún
motivo antes. Las letras eran
claras y visibles en la penumbra
del teatro. No sé por qué las palabras,
inmediatamente y antes,
esa materia. No encontré a nadie
afuera del teatro ni en la calle;
casi corriendo llegué a mi casa y
culturales y entretenidos.
La labor de los diversos programas
incluidos en el calendario
de eventos es conmemorar la celebración
de la independencia y
revolución de México en la ciudad
del Álamo. “San Antonio y México
siempre han estado unidos, hay
un gran ambiente de amistad y
fraternidad entre las dos entidades”,
comentó Gabriela Franco, directora
del Instituto Cultural de México.
En la madrugada del 16 de septiembre
de 1810 comenzó la batalla
de independencia motivada por el
Cura Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla en
la ciudad de Dolores Hidalgo, Guanajuato.
México fue colonizado por
España en agosto de 1521 y estuvo
bajo su régimen hasta que finalizó
la lucha de independencia el 27 de
septiembre de 1821.
Un siglo después, el 20 de
noviembre de 1910, el candidato a
la presidencia de México, Francisco
I. Madero, proclamó al pueblo a
levantarse en armas contra el gobierno
de Porfirio Díaz. El país estuvo
bajo el Porfiriato por más de 30 años
y durante todo este periodo México
creció política y económicamente,
de una bujía abrí el primer sobre;
sentía mi corazón trepidante; las
letras bailaron delante de mis
ojos: escarbe un metro debajo de
su cama. Era todo lo que decía.
Esa noche casi no dormí. Al otro
día temprano me armé de pico
y pala y de baldes y cubos en
donde iba echando la tierra y los
escombros.
apiladas. Las fui sacando una a
una y las apilé en montoncitos
de diez; cuando terminé de acomodarlas
sobre la mesa un rayo
del alba las iluminó; nunca fui tan
feliz en mi vida como en ese momento;
pensé que por ese instante
valía la pena todo el sufrimiento
que había tenido en la vida, todo
se industrializó y estimuló la inversión
extranjera. No obstante, la
clase trabajadora fue oprimida y
abusada.
Después de salir de la cárcel
Madero, huyó a San Antonio y
fue aquí donde escribió el Plan
de San Luís, donde estipuló la
proclamación revolucionaria. La
revolución terminó en 1920 con
la presidencia de Adolfo Huerta y
después de la proclamación de la
Constitución de México.
Los mexicanos primero lucharon
por independencia del injusto régimen
español y luego se levantaron
en armas revolucionarias contra el
Porfiriato opresivo y es por ese gran
el sacrificio de una existencia
entera; ojalá pudiera detener este
instante, pensé.
En un pequeño espacio de la
mesa vi el segundo sobre. Lo vi
con desinterés porque pensé que
realmente lo que yo deseaba ya lo
había obtenido y, al cabo, cómo
iba yo a invertir esa plata era
asunto mío. Sin embargo pensé
que ya que el primer sobre me
había dicho la verdad sobre el
único objetivo de mi paso por la
tierra, tal vez, me dijera algo más,
interesante y verdadero.
¡Acaso me dijera donde encontrar
otro tesoro! Rompí el sobre
lacrado, decía: en el momento
que usted lea estas palabras caerá
muerto, de bruces, sobre la mesa.
¡Estaba muerto y casi sin darme
cuenta!
festividades algo extremadamente
especial.
“San Antonio siempre ha tenido
lazos muy importantes con México,
y en su bicentenario y centenario es
obviamente natural que San Antonio
se vista de blanco para celebrarlo
junto con México” detalló Raúl
The newest late-night talk
show to hit the airwaves on
Saturday nights belongs to San
Antonio. The Raulito Show,
starring Raulito Navaira as host,
is a thirty-minute program that
follows a traditional format with
a very hip and Latin twist.
The new show, which airs
across the state on Fox, will bring
stars to live audiences for tapings
at Sam’s Music Hall, located
right next to Sam’s Burger Joint.
Little Joe graced Raulito’s stage
for the very first show in August.
Associate Producer Diana
Arevalo is thrilled about working
on the show. “The Latino
community needs a show like
this because it reflects the diversity
in our culture and style,
and showcases our great talent,”
Arevalo said.
She and Raulito share the same
vision for the show.
“Our vision is to have a great
show, where people can laugh,
learn, have a great time and get
away for a little bit,” she said.
The show, taped in front of a
live audience, takes about two
hours to tape, but so far the
audiences have had a great time
participating and even winning
prizes.
“People can come see the show
live during the tapings for free,”
Arevalo added. The schedule
for tapings is on the Web site at
www.theraulitoshow.com.
The next taping will be
Sept.15, and Arevalo hopes everyone
will turn out and enjoy
the fun. “Even though the show
is on late, the tapings are usually
on Wednesdays starting at 6 p.m.
All ages are welcome, The Raulito
Show is family-oriented,”
Arevalo said.
The show is also a family affair,
Raulito, 42, told La Prensa.
“After [his brother Emilio’s]
accident, I started performing
with the family – Emilio, IV,
Diego Navaira, Destiny and Rodrigo,”
he said.
“I was thinking I have to do
something – so I recorded the
CD “Simplemente Raulito – Por
Mientras” and it went really
well,” he explained.
The CD gave him some recognition,
and one day while at
H-E-B, something happened that
started the ball rolling, soon everything
started to fall into place.
“I met a rep from Barcel USA,
another major sponsor, and really
the people who made this all possible,”
Raulito explained.
Barcel USA asked the singer
if he would be willing to sign
autographs and help promote
their products. Together with
his manager, Orlando Salazar,
Raulito brainstormed. They came
up with the idea for the show,
pitched it to Barcel USA, and the
rest is history.
“Really it was Barcel and
Papas Toreadas that made this
possible,” Raulito said.
Each show features a special
guest, a segment called
Campeones Pequenos intended
to highlight the younger set’s
achievements, the Abuelita’s
Kitchen segment which introduces
special homemade recipes
for dips on every show, a musical
guest, and show regulars like the
“muy caliente Toreada girls” and
the 3 B’s Band.
The whole family really does
work on the show, Raulito explained.
“Destiny, 18, is the force
behind the scenes – she loves
working with the audience, Rodrigo,
14, plays bass guitar in the
band, and Lauren, 8, is already
participating and helping with
commercials,” he said.
Josie, who helps with everything,
has been married to
Raulito for 21 years. She always
tells the children school is first,
Raulito said.
“She always worries they’ll
get the performing bug,” he said.
But Destiny, a full-time college
student at University of
Texas-Austin, got her mother’s
message loud and clear. She attends
school on a full academic
scholarship. “She got a full-ride
at UT, we are very proud,” Raulito
said.
Nevertheless, right now, the
show is the center of Raulito’s
attention.
“I am so excited about this
show,” Raulito said. The house
band is the same band that tours
with him, including his14-yearold
son Rodrigo Navaira.
“We call them the “3 B’s
Band” on the show, which is
short for Best Buy Band, which
is one of our major sponsors,”
he said.
Raulito and Arevalo are working
hard on the line-up to make
sure every show is a great show.
“We have wonderful guests
coming. Sports stars, like Jesse
James Leija; actors like Ara Celi,
who appeared in the new Robert
Rodriguez film, Machete; and
more musical guests,” Raulito
said.
At the end of the day, Raulito
says the most important part of
the show is the audience.
“The show is taped in front of
a live audience, and we welcome
everyone to come and have a
good time, Raulito said. One of
the most popular segments is his
bit with audience, where he tries
to guess things.
“The audience participation
is always a comic moment – it’s
one of my favorite parts of the
7-E
Don Francisco meets Jay Leno: The new Raulito Show
Raulito Navaira. (Courtesy photo)
show,” he said.
Raulito is making new traditions
in our town with his new
show, which he always signs off
with his father’s song, “Contenta
Mi Alma.”
Support San Antonio’s bid on
late night TV and come out for
a taping (seating is first-come,
first-served). Arevalo also asks
viewers to nominate candidates
for the Campeones Pequeños
through the show’s Web site at
www.theRaulito show.

no one will complain.
Santikos Theatres and Eva’s
Heroes joined forces to create
Eva’s Heroes Special Presentations.
The program was created
to provide a welcoming
and comfortable movie going
experience in an environment
designed for families of specialneeds
children with autism or
other challenges who seldom
attend movies.
“We are thrilled to be able to
offer a movie going experience
to an audience that may not
have been able to enjoy going
to the movies in the past,” said
Alexis Smith, senior marketing
manager at Santikos Theatres.
Here’s the best part: it’s free
admission to guests with intellectual
special needs.
Eva’s Heroes Special Presentations
will feature family
friendly titles the first and third
Tuesday of every month. The
auditorium will be open for seating
at 5:30 p.m. and the special
presentation will begin at 6 p.m.
The idea for the films first
came about in 2007 when Marianne
Ross, of Elkridge, Maryland,
and her then seven-yearold
daughter Meaghan, who has
autism, were asked to leave the
theater because Meagan was a
distraction to the other patrons.
It’s relatively a new concept
that is getting great reviews.
Sensory-friendly films are not
about what films are chosen –it’s
about the atmosphere. Many
children, especially those with
autism, need to be in a “no
pressure environment” and now,
thanks to Santikos Theaters and
Eva’s Heroes, special needs
children can enjoy movies in
the theater.
Success is sweet: the sweeter if long delayed and
attained through manifold struggles and defeats.
Joey Montana flows con clase
Por Cristina Blackwell
Foto Domingo Banda
El tipo es fino, paciente y
atento. Edgardo Antonio Miranda
Beiro, mejor conocido como
Joey Montana, es una de las estrellas
más nuevas de la música
latina. Con tan sólo 24 años de
edad ha sabido ganarse el cariño
de sus fans en CentroAmérica,
Sudamérica, México, Estados
Unidos, y hasta en Europa.
Después de cinco años de
carrera junto a “La Factoría”,
abandonó el grupo para continuar
su carrera como solista.
Fue entonces cuando lanzó
su primer álbum titulado “Sin
Cadenas”, donde contó con la
colaboración del ex integrante
de Son by Four, Angel López
en la canción “Que Dios Te
Castigue”.
“Flow With Class” es el título
de su álbum más reciente que ha
colocado al artista panameño en
la mirilla musical con pegajosos
temas románticos y sociales.
Indudablemente lo que lo distingue
ante tantos artistas es
su mezcla única: reggaetonero
urbano con clase.
Para la grabación del Billboard
hit, “Tus ojos me ven”,
Joey se unió al cantante también
panameño, Víctor Delgado,
mejor conocido como “El Predikador”.
Asegura que su álbum es un
exitazo o les regresa su plata –
¡garantizado!
El cantante habló con La
Prensa sobre su vida, su éxito
musical y sus sueños para el
futuro.
LP: Formaste parte del grupo
“La Factoría”. Cuéntanos
esa experiencia.
JM: En ese tiempo yo lo
hacía como hobby. Me tocó la
suerte de cantar cualquier cosa
y de estar ahí con ellos. Escribí
canciones románticas para ellos
y llegó un tiempo en el que me
cansé. Y ya después estaba listo
para escribir yo solo.
LP: Tu nuevo álbum, “Flow
With Class”, sale el 28 de
septiembre. ¿Qué podemos
esperar?
JM: El disco contiene 14
temas –es muy completo, muy
variado. Tiene mucho flow, pero
mezclado con pop y electrónico
y encima con mucha clase. La
letra es romántica pero no lo
mismo de siempre. Muchas canciones
hoy en día son muy superficiales
y quería buscar cosas
que pasan en la vida real. Son
temas que tienen letra profunda.
LP: ¿Cuál es el mensaje que
quieres mandar?
JM: Quiero demostrar que
puede haber algo diferente. Que
lo mío es pop urbano pero con
mucha clase.
LP: ¿Te consideras un chico
romántico?
JM: ¡Claro!
LP: ¿Qué es lo más romántico
que has hecho para una
chica?
JM: Serenata –que no se
practica mucho en Panamá. En
México se hace mucho pero allá
no es tan común.
LP: ¿Cuál es la imagen que
quisieras proyectar?
JM: Quiero mantener mi
flow, pero con clase. Cantar,
escribir y rapear pero con mucha
clase. Desde los 15 años vestía
suit y me manejaba de otra
manera entonces a la gente le
empezó a gustar eso.
LP: ¿Quiénes son tus fans?
JM: Las jóvenes. En Panamá,
que es el lugar donde yo más
pegué, tengo desde niñas de
cinco años, pero la mayoría son
como de 17. ¡También he tenido
señoras de 40 años! Les gusta
mucho el contenido de la letra.
LP: Además de tener letra
bonita, mantienes el lírico
clean –algo que muchos artistas
hoy en día no practican.
¿Por qué es importante para
ti?
JM: Primero porque mi papá
y mi mamá siempre me educaron
muy bien. Estuve en un colegio
católico y siempre fui una persona
muy recta. No uso drogas,
no fumo. Desde México empecé
a tomar micheladas pero antes
de eso no tomaba nada.
Cuando estaba en La Factoría
tenía mucha letra con doble sentido.
Mi mamá me decía que no
cantara eso y pues no le hacía
caso pero después maduré y me
di cuenta de que eso no era yo.
LP: ¿Con qué artista te gustaría
cantar?
JM: Mira, yo tenía ese sueño
en Houston con Angel López,
el de Son by Four. Creo que
lo decía tanto que se me logró.
Sueño con trabajar con Drake,
me fascina Drake. Con los Latinos,
me gustaría mucho trabajar
con Belinda, Alejandra Guzmán,
Juan Luis Guerra… Pero yo sé
que todo tiene su tiempo.
LP: ¿Qué planes tienes ahora?
JM: Ahora voy a estar
promocionando el disco.
Después me regreso a
Panamá porque tengo
muchos proyectos
pendientes –la disquera
quiere que
me mude para Los
Ángeles a finales
de año.
LP: ¿Y cómo
te sientes de
dejar tu gente,
tu familia y
tus fans?
J M : L a
v e r d a d ,
s o y m u y
apegado a
mi familia.
Estuve dos
años fuera
y f u e r o n
fatales para
mí. Gracias
a Dios aquí
h a y L a -
tinos así
que te sientes
con
ese calor,
sin embarg
o , t e n g o
muchos años
en Panamá.
Pero también
quiero internacionalizarme
así
que no es mala idea.
LP: ¿Has grabado algún
video musical de “Flow With
Class”?
JM: Sí, sale en dos semanas.
Lo grabamos en el desierto
de Los Ángeles – ¡por
eso me veo medio
quemado!
LP: Antes
de ser artista
te graduaste
de
f i s i o t e -
r a p i a .
¿ P o r
qué escogiste
esa
carrera?
JM: Mi
papa sufría
mucho de la columna entonces
yo veía eso y veía que era
un fisicoterapeuta el que lo entendía,
decidí entonces estudiar
eso. Además yo era buenísimo
en química, anatomía, física
–pura “A”. El problema era la
práctica. Me tocó trabajar
con niños con parálisis
cerebral, autismo,
niños quemados
y me iba a mi
casa deprimido.
No tenía el
corazón para
ver a un niño
así. Ahora que
lo pienso creo
que me hubiera
gustado mucho
estudiar publicidad
o haber sido
chef.

Las películas con un mensaje
positivo son importantes para
los adolescentes, quienes la
mayoría de las veces se identifican
con los personajes. El filme
“Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam”,
es un claro ejemplo, ahí los protagonistas
logran el triunfo por
medio de la música.
En esta ocasión le toca a Chloe
Bridges entrar en la segunda
parte de esta película. Originaria
misma.
El gran estreno de la película
fue este viernes 3 de septiembre,
por el canal Disney Chanel, ahí
Chloe junto con el resto del
elenco que integra Demi Lovato
y los famosos Jonas Brothers,
entre otros, conquistaron una
vez a todos sus seguidores.
En entrevista vía telefónica,
desde Los Ángeles, la joven
actriz nos contó a detalle sobre
este trabajo en la pantalla
grande, el cual seguramente le
dará grandes niveles de popularidad.
L.P. Cuéntanos de la experiencia
que tuviste al participar
en una película tan popular
como lo es “Camp Rock 2: The
Final Jam”.
C.B.: Fue una experiencia
muy bonita, tan solo el trabajar
con la gente que trabajé, eso ya
es muy emocionante. Desde que
anunciaron que yo estaría en la
película pensé que sería fabuloso,
no imaginé en lo que me
estaba metiendo, por el hecho
de que “Camp Rock” es muy
exitoso.
L.P. Háblanos de tu personaje
en esta película.
C.B.: Soy “Dana” un personaje
muy importante, quiero que
la gente se identifique con ella,
es una chica muy sobresaliente,
es una líder. Conoce a “Nate”
(Nick Jonas) y de ahí se desarrolla
parte de la historia.
L.P. ¿Cómo era la rutina en
las grabaciones?
C.B.: En este caso grabábamos
mucho en la noche, durante
el día dormíamos tarde, luego
teníamos que ir a maquillaje y
peinados. Después ya entre toma
La Prensa de San Antonio
y toma pues nos reuníamos a jugar
algo para distraernos, hasta
que filmábamos la siguiente
toma, eso era la rutina.
L.P. Después de buscar el
éxito ahora estas logrando
mucho en tu carrera. ¿Qué
consejo le das a quienes luchan
por un sueño?
C.B.: Si tienes un sueño lucha
por él, especialmente en esta
industria aquí tienes que tener
pasión por esto. Uno trabaja
por años, para trabajar tenemos
que hacer audiciones durante
mucho tiempo para lograr algo.
No se den por vencidos, sigan
luchando por lo que quieren,
ese consejo les doy a los adolescentes.
L.P. ¿Qué es lo que más extrañas
de Louisiana ahora que
estas en Los Ángeles?
C.B.: La comida, definitivamente
extraño mucho la comida,
aquí en Los Ángeles no es la
misma, extraño el gumbo y los
poboys, también extraño a mis
amigos. Siempre que tengo la
oportunidad de regresar lo hago
y lo disfruto mucho.
L.P. ¿Qué es lo que más te
gusta de las películas que produce
Disney?
C.B.: Lo bonito de estas
películas es que todos nos divertimos
mucho, son para todos los
niños y para los adultos que las
quieran ver. No hay violencia y
no importa de qué país vienes,
son películas que muestran la
unidad. Yo soy mitad latina
y los demás miembros del
elenco tienen también raíces
de otros lados, así que las
películas son para todos.
L.P. ¿Qué te parece el
poder interactuar con
fanáticos en las redes
sociales?
C.B.: Es espectacular
tener la interacción
entre los artistas
y los fanáticos,
yo tengo una página
de twitter y es súper
padre poder hablar
con la gente, porque la
gente te dice lo bueno
y malo acerca de
ti, y viene de ellos
honestamente. Por
eso lo que más me
gusta es la interacción.
El nuevo reflejo de Gill Jiménez
By Ramón Hernández
It has been a long and winding
road, but Gill Jiménez now has his
own band and has recorded his first
compact disc.Gilbert Jaimé “Jay”
Jiménez, heard his first music notes
coming out of his grandfather’s accordion
and his father’s bajo sexto.
“As kids, my brother David and
I would sit there and watch them
playing on the porch,” Jiménez said
during an interview at his Westside
office. “I knew then that I wanted to
be like them.”
However, his grandfather, Santiago
Jiménez Sr. and his father,
Leonardo “Flaco” Jiménez spent so
much time performing, that Gill had
no choice but to learn on his own.
“I was eight when I started teaching
myself. I would wait until 3 or 4
a.m. for my dad to back up his Croft
trailer to the house and unload. The
accordion and the bajo sexto seemed
too difficult. So after he went to sleep,
I started practicing on the drums as I
put on the headphones and listened
to my dad’s cassette tapes. Later, I
taught David to play drums.”
As a student at Stafford and Gardendale
elementary schools, he sang
at festivals with El Mariachi Infantil
de Rick and Mario Mejia plus using
music soundtracks to belt out songs
such as John Cougar Mellencamp’s
“Hurt So Good.”
The most memorable experience
he recalls is when his mother, Adela,
attended one of those elementary
school functions and as he says, “She
never wanted me to be in the same
boat as my dad, but on seeing me
perform, she got teary-eyed because
people were enjoying my performance.”
Gill continued entering talent contests
and doing assemblies through
Eleuterio Escobar Junior High
School. He also said that after he
learned some of his father’s pasaditas,
he would crawl out his bedroom
window to sneak out and jam with
many of the local conjuntos.
“I didn’t make it to high school
because I got married at 15 and I now
had to work full-time in a nine-to-five
job as a construction worker,” the
44-year-old singer-songwriter said
with a hint of regret.
Still, his love for music never faded
and he freelanced as a drummer with
Leo Garza, Sandy Sánchez, Rubén
Naranjo, Crosswind Band and other
groups at The Other Place, the Latin
Corner and El Camaroncito to name
a few.
Whenever he and David, who
plays accordion, sat in with their father,
Flaco would always say, “Aqui
traigo mis pollitos” (“Here are my
little chicks.”)
Then came a long rocky period
in his life during which he rode an
emotional roller coaster that seemed
to have no end.
“I went through a period dealing
with issues from heading the
wrong way, making wrong decisions,
walking on the wild side, living an
undesirably lifestyle and not focusing
on what I could have done with my
music,” Gill admitted.
However, he later learned that
if a person is headed in the wrong
direction, God does allow U turns.
Although Gill says he wasted five
years of his life, it was during that
period that he achieved sobriety and
cleaned up his act.
His turnaround came during the
time he spent in a correctional facility.
“I had so much time on my
hands that I started reflecting on life,
on my past experiences and I would
jot down my thoughts in verse. The
name for my group came to me when
my room-mate, a guy from the Rio
Grande Valley, would see me sitting
there writing songs; and for some
unknown reason, he said, ‘Go to that
mirror, look at your face and tell me
who you see.’ I did as he suggested
and the new reflection was a new
person, a new image, hence the name
Nuevo Reflejo.
Gill may have been restricted and
restrained to four walls, but it turned
into a liberating experience.
“That’s when I realized what I really
could do. I didn’t want to waste
my time in negativity anymore. I
wanted to be different. So when I
came back home, I recruited musicians
that could adapt to the style
that I wanted. I didn’t want to go
conjunto, Tejano or international. I
wanted all three genres in one.
Last April, Gill formed Nuevo
Reflejo with Andy Cubarrubias, accordion;
Larry Gutiérrez, bajo sexto;
Signs, signs
everywhere
Recently I had the pleasure of visiting the beautiful Lan Su Chinese
Garden in Portland, OR, a spiritual place for locals and visitors
to escape the problems of everyday life. As I entered the gates, I was
prompted to turn off my cell phone and to refrain from talking to others.
This particular garden was designed to engage all your senses. As I
began to open my mind, I could feel the rocks beneath my feet, hear
the gentle waterfall and smell the blooming blossoms. This place truly
embraces inspiration.
I was walking over a bridge comprised of broken rocks when I passed
by a sign that read, “Please watch your step as surfaces are uneven.” I
couldn’t help but wonder if they were referring to this uneven bridge or
everyday life. I think we all agree that as time passes, we cross uneven
paths without warning. Sometimes we fall, sometimes we stumble and
hopefully we always make it across.
As soon as I left the garden, the rustle and bustle of Portland once
again stirred my calmness. I walked towards the MAX Rail when I realized
it was departing soon. I ran fast and managed to get on just in time.
I sat down and looked up only to see another sign, “Don’t hold doors
open. Doors must close for ramp to work.”
Then as always, my mind wondered. This sign too can apply to my
life. Sometimes one door has to close before another will open. Often
when we see a door closing, we don’t want it to. We try everything to
stop it and then soon understand that we cannot. Holding doors open
isn’t always a good thing in life. Sometimes they have to shut for the
better.
A few days went by without seeing another sign. Then at the Portland
Airport, one last sign made its presence. It read as follows, “It’s hard to
move on if you’re standing still.” I shook my head as I read this Southwest
Airlines sign. How many times do we hold on to the past? How
often do we find ourselves stuck in a rut, unable to move on with life?
Even though moving on may be difficult, sometimes it’s the only way
to get to where you need to be.
Next time you’re walking about, I encourage you to read signs and
take them for more than just warnings. Apply them to your daily life
and you just might see God talking to you in a way you never saw
before.
Querida Nina:
a mi madre Julia, y a mi abuela Doña Luz.
Estaba organizando unos documentos y me encontré
Patricia
Hace 30 años Dios llamó a mi madre, y desde hace 30 años mi madre has
tú me inculcaste.
Tal vez no
Gracias.
Duran, owner and publisher of
San Antonio’s premier bilingual
newspaper La Prensa, has been
honored many times over the
and Javier Portillo on drums.
Less than two months later, they went
to Robert Gutierrez’s The Media Resources
(TMR) studios and recorded
nine tunes that Gill wrote during his
five-year inspirational period.
The result is “Amor y Dolor”
(“Love and Pain”). They say that
behind every successful man is a
woman. In this case, her name is
Margarita “Margie” Cisneros, who
he met 25 years ago, is now his partner
in life and is also the inspiration
for the first two songs, “Rosa Tan
Hermosa” and “Eres Tu.”
“‘Mi Almuada’ is about a dream in
which I saw a face I had never seen
before in my life,” Gill said. “When
my roommate woke me up, I was
hugging my pillow and he says I had
a smile on my face.”
“Equivocado Estaba” is about an
ex-girlfriend who worked for Bexar
County, told him she would wait
for him, then she wrote him a Dear
John letter.
As for “Cicatrizes Inolvidadas”,
the TMR recording artist said,”
That’s my life.”
“Amor En Papel” is about writing
and mailing out your feelings to your
loved ones. “Tus Mentiras” needs no
explanation. “Dios Te Puso En Mi
Supreme Court.
The Supreme Court acted upon
a writ of certiorari and heard the
Camino” is the only tune on this CD
that Gill did not write.
“It’s a good song that was written
by David Escalante. When I heard
that song, I knew what I could do
with it and I decided to include it in
my CD,” he explained.
“Amor Inolvidable” is about
someone Gill will never forget and
“El Retrato” is about a picture that
has special meaning to Gill.
