March Madness: put on your dancing shoes

March is a basketball fans 

dream. The NBA is coming 

down the stretch and March 

Madness is in full effect. It’s 

arguably the most exciting 

time of the year for the college 

students and fans across the 

country. 

Moreover, many key questions 

arise this time of year 

when it comes to the NCAA 

tournament, like how many 

teams from the Big East will 

get a bid to the big dance? 

Currently the Big East has 10 

teams ranked in the top 25 and 

two more with 20 wins already. 

How many of these are legitimate 

title contenders? You can 

count at least four who’ll get 

in; Pittsburgh, Notre Dame, St. 

Johns and UConn. 

On the other end of the 

NCAA bracket, which potential 

lower seeded team has 

the capability to make a deep 

tournament run? 

A team like Oakland Golden 

Grizzlies who were 25-9 in 

the regular season and that 

includes a win at then #7 Tennessee. 

They rank third in field 

goal percentage (49%) and second 

in scoring offense at 85.6 

per game. This team has what 

it takes to at least make a run 

to the Sweet 16. 

Players to watch 

First, Jared Sullinger is a stud 

now and will be at the next level, 

it won’t take long for him to 

get acclimated to the NBA. At 

Ohio State this year, Sullinger 

is averaging 17 points and 10 

rebounds while shooting 56% 

from the field. He’s driving the 

Buckeyes to be the #1 team in 

the country and poised to make 

a run at the title. 

Kemba Walker of Connecticut 

is fifth in the country in 

scoring with 23 per game to 

go with along 5 rebounds and 

4 assists. He has helped the 

Huskies to the Big East finals, 

and you can’t help but to think 

there’s a bright future for him 

in the NBA. 

Lastly, Nolan Smith out of 

Duke averages 21 points per 

game and shoots 47% from 

the field. He also is leading a 

Duke team that is looking at 

winning their second consecutive 

national title. He reminds 

me a lot of Toney Douglas who 

plays for the Knicks because 

he isn’t the biggest point guard 

in the country, but at the same 

time he can score when asked 

to do so. However he is the 

team’s leader and takes care 

of the ball. 

Altogether it will be a great 

tournament as always, there 

will be hearts broken early and 

late, but at the end only one 

team can be called a champion.

S.A. restaurants unite in attempt 

to make 1.5 ton enchilada

For the first time ever, San 

Antonio is attempting a Guinness 

World Record for the 

World’s Largest Enchilada. The 

Rey Feo Consejo Educational 

Foundation, in combination 

with over 20 local restaurants, 

has been working together since 

November 2010 to choreograph 

the production of this recordbreaking 

feat that will nearly 

span the length of a football 

field. 

The presentation will take 

place at 4 p.m. on April 9, in 

the heart of Market Square. This 

event will be in conjunction 

with Fiesta de los Reyes, the 

Rey Feo Consejo Educational 

Foundation’s newest official 

Fiesta event. 

The team is currently in discussions 

with the Guinness 

World Records as there are certain 

requirements that must be 

met. For example, the enchilada 

must weigh over 3,122 pounds 

(roughly over 1.5 tons), and 

include key ingredients such as 

meat, cheese, sauce, onions and 

of course, tortillas. 

Every detail of the production 

must be carefully documented, 

including precise measurements 

on the weight of each ingredient 

before and after being cooked. 

Additionally, the team will need 

to ensure that the construction 

of the enchilada meet all 

health codes requirements, be 

completely edible, and be distributed 

amongst the community 

for consumption, keeping with 

the spirit and essence of Fiesta 

de los Reyes, which is free and 

open to the public. 

“It’s so exciting to see all 

these local San Antonio restaurants 

come together for this attempt,” 

said Nick Garza, former 

Rey Feo XLI and Chairman of 

the event who has spear-headed 

the effort to rally support from 

many restaurants and sponsors. 

“San Antonio is definitely the 

home of Tex-Mex cuisine, and 

when I learned about this record, 

I felt in my heart that San Antonio 

is the place where this record 

should be and Fiesta is when it 

should take place.” 

With passion, dedication, and 

a strong sense of collaboration 

among the restaurant community, 

the team has been busy practicing 

the assembly of the 300 

foot long enchilada by creating 

several smaller versions, the 

most recent of which measuring 

8 feet in length. “Everyone 

involved has worked tirelessly 

to make this event a reality and 

we’re very grateful for all the 

support we’ve received from 

the restaurant community and 

the city,” said Brian Weiner, 

Chair of the Rey Feo Consejo 

Educational Foundation.

Fiesta store prepares for early-bird ticket sales

Want tickets for Cornyation, 

Oyster Bake, Night in Old San 

Antonio and many other Fiesta 

events? 

Get them at The Fiesta Store, 

2611 Broadway, starting March 

18. 

Fiesta organizations will have 

volunteers selling tickets from 10 

a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through 

Friday and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays. 

Fiesta goers from around the 

city, eager for prize seats, will start 

lining up in front of the store well 

before it opens-in fact, last year 

the first customers arrived Tuesday 

afternoon-three days before 

the Friday opening day. 

Last year, lines were long, but 

spirits were festive, said Chuck 

Blische, executive director of the 

Fiesta Commission. Tickets for 

some events are limited, so it’s 

first-come, first served. 

March 17 early birds will have 

a chance to lounge in eight seats 

provided by Santikos Theatres, 

the official Fiesta movie theatre. 

Those in line the morning of 

March 18 can enjoy Kiolbassa 

sausages and coffee served by 

volunteers. 

While at the store, a central 

location for tickets and Fiesta information, 

Fiesta lovers can shop 

for 2011 merchandise including 

t-shirts, posters, pins and medals. 

Not all Fiesta organizations sell 

tickets at the store. Many offer 

advance sales by phone or charge 

admission at the gate. Sixty of 

Fiesta’s 100-plus events have 

free admission, including “Fiesta 

Fiesta at the Alamo,” the April 7 

Fiesta kickoff party.

Adultos mayores no reciben 

servicios médicos preventivos 

(EFE).- Los adultos mayores, en 

especial los de grupos minoritarios 

como los hispanos, no reciben los 

servicios preventivos recomendados, 

de acuerdo con un estudio 

de los Centros de Control y Prevención 

de Enfermedades (CDC) 

divulgado el martes. 

Según el informe, en el que 

colaboraron otras agencias gubernamentales, 

existe una brecha significativa 

entre los adultos mayores 

que reciben servicios clínicos preventivos 

y los que no los reciben. 

Entre los servicios analizados en 

el reporte se encuentra la inmunización 

contra enfermedades como 

la gripe o infecciones del flujo 

sanguíneo, meningitis y neumonía, 

o pruebas para detectar el cáncer de 

seno, la diabetes o la osteoporosis. 

“Millones de estadounidenses 

no están recibiendo los servicios 

clínicos preventivos que sabemos 

pueden prevenir enfermedades y 

mejorar la calidad de vida”, declaró 

Lynda Anderson, directora del Programa 

de Envejecimiento saludable 

de los CDC con sede en Atlanta. 

El informe subraya la necesidad 

de promover los servicios clínicos 

preventivos entre los adultos mayores 

de 65 años, en especial entre 

las minorías. 

El estudió halló que un 47 por 

ciento de los hispanos de 65 años o 

más reportó no haber sido sometido 

a una revisión para detectar cáncer 

colorrectal, comparado con un 34 

% entre los blancos. 

Asimismo, más del 50 por ciento 

de los hispanos, el 47 por ciento 

de los afroamericanos y asiáticos 

nunca han recibido una vacuna 

neumocóccica, en comparación con 

un 36 por ciento entre los adultos 

mayores blancos. 

El informe señala los “complejos” 

retos que enfrentan las autoridades 

sanitarias enfrentan para 

disminuir o eliminar estas disparidades, 

entre los que se encuentra 

la falta de información sobre estos 

servicios. 

De acuerdo con el reporte, estas 

poblaciones pueden no estar al 

tanto del tipo de servicios preventivos 

recomendados según su edad 

o también puede que no sepan que 

éstos están cubiertos por Medicare. 

“Al poner en práctica estrategias 

clínicas y comunitarias efectivas 

podemos reducir dramáticamente 

las brechas destacadas en este 

reporte”, aseveró Wayne Giles, 

director de la División de Salud 

Comunitaria de los CDC. 

El informe destaca la necesidad 

de promover políticas que 

aumenten y faciliten el acceso a 

servicios comunitarios preventivos, 

como proveer vacunaciones contra 

la influenza en centros de votación 

en días de elecciones. 

Tanto las autoridades como 

organizaciones sin fines de lucro 

que participaron en la investigación 

concuerdan en la importancia de 

los servicios de salud preventiva 

comunitarios para mejorar la calidad 

de vida y salud de los adultos 

mayores. 

“Si podemos ayudar a los pacientes 

de 65 años y más a recibir 

las inmunizaciones y pruebas de 

detección recomendadas, podríamos 

reducir significativamente enfermedades 

innecesarias”, indicó 

Edward Langston, representante 

de la Asociación Médica Americana, 

organización que participó 

en la investigación. 

En el estudio participaron 

además organizaciones civiles y 

sin fines de lucro que atienden a 

esta población como AARP, la Sociedad 

Gerontológica de Estados 

Unidos y la Asociación Nacional 

de Estados Unidos por el Envejecimiento 

y las Discapacidades, 

entre otras. 

De acuerdo con cifras de los 

CDC, unos 10 mil estadounidenses 

cumplen 65 años cada día y 1 de 

cada 5 tendrá 65 o más en el 2030.

Muevete USA targets obesity in San Antonio

There are nine million U.S. 

children who are overweight and 

obese, and Hispanic communities 

have higher than average rates of 

obesity with some neighborhoods 

exhibiting epidemic rates. This 

problem causes great concern in 

the community and Dr. Norma 

Martinez Rogers, Ph.D., RN, 

professor of family and community 

health systems in the UT 

Health Science Center School of 

Nursing, wants to find a solution. 

Dr. Rogers, who is also the 

Muevete (Move) USA project 

director, developed the project to 

train Hispanic student nurses and 

will also work with Adelita G. 

Cantu, Ph.D., RN, assistant professor 

of family and community 

health systems, who will direct 

the community service learning 

portion of the program. Together 

they will work with their local 

communities as well as through 

promotoras and Parent Teacher 

Associations. The hands-on training 

sessions will teach students to 

deliver positive messages of sustainable 

healthy lifestyle eating

“Each one of these little children 

is a time bomb waiting to 

explode prematurely with unprecedented 

chronic disease. Hispanic 

communities have higher than 

average rates of obesity with 

some neighborhoods exhibiting 

epidemic rates. These communities 

are poorer than the national 

average, and many Hispanics 

make food choices based on economic 

costs. Healthier foods are 

often more expensive. Hispanic 

communities need obesity prevention 

education from Hispanic 

nurses of which understand the 

culture as well as typical foods 

and life styles of the population,” 

said Dr. Rogers. 

The project is made possible 

by a $150,000 grant for from 

the National Association of Hispanic 

Nurses (NAHN) Fund 

and a $150,000 grant from The 

Coca-Cola Foundation and will 

target five U.S. cities including 

Chicago, Phoenix, San Antonio, 

Edinburg and Brownsville. Out of 

the 35 student nurses, 11 are from 

the UT Health Science Center San 

Antonio School of Nursing. 

“We are impressed with this 

hands-on program. This project 

will help eliminate obesity, which 

is one of the major health disparities 

in the Hispanic community. 

The NAHN has over ten years 

of experience in working with 

profit and nonprofit organizations 

to promote health and wellness 

programs in the Hispanic community. 

They have the expertise and 

relationships in the local community 

which are needed to help 

programs translate into significant 

tools that benefit individuals and 

families,” said Frank P. Ros, Vice 

President of Hispanic Strategies 

at The Coca-Cola Company. 

According to Dr. Rogers, studies 

have shown those who engage 

in healthy lifestyles are more 

likely to make healthy decisions 

when it comes to food, people that 

recycle tend to buy more fruits 

and vegetables and children who 

are provided with the proper education 

on health and wellness will 

share this information with their 

friends and family resulting in 

mothers making healthier choices 

when purchasing products. 

“The consistency and repetitiveness 

of the positive messaging 

is necessary. Hispanic communities 

have a need for empowerment, 

where they are provided 

the tools to make the right choices 

for their health,” said Dr. Rogers. 

The program hopes to lower 

the risk for chronic diseases such 

as type 2 diabetes. The program 

will target Hispanic children in 

grades one to six, Hispanic adolescents 

ages 13-17, and Hispanic 

adults. Target areas will be zip 

codes of lower-income families. 

Student nurses will utilize their 

new knowledge about obesity 

and culture obtained through this 

program along with their professional 

nursing skills to target 

obesity in their communities.

San Antonio election primer 

It’s that time again, when residents 

of the city of San Antonio 

decide who should be at the helm 

of our fair city. Earlier this week, 

the window to apply for candidacy 

in this year’s races closed. 

There are at least two candidates 

for every city council district, 

four open seats on City Council, 

and four challengers running 

against Mayor Julian Castro to 

lead the city.

The Mayor and all ten City 

Council offices are up for election 

every odd year in May. The 

next General Election is scheduled 

for Saturday, May 14. 

However, not all Members of 

the City Council are eligible for 

re-election as the City of San Antonio 

has term limits. According 

to Section 5 of the City Charter, 

the term of office for all Members 

of the City Council elected at a 

General Election is two years. 

And as of December 1, 2008, 

those elected are limited to four 

full terms of office. Previously, 

elected City Council members 

were limited to just two full 

terms. 

So for the 2009-2011 Council, 

Councilmember Mary Alice 

Cisneros from District 1; Councilmember 

Philip Cortez from 

District 4; Councilmember Justin 

Rodriguez from District 7; and 

Councilmember John Clamp 

from District 10 are completing 

second terms in office. As such, 

they cannot seek re-election for 

that office. 

City Council Districts are 

determined once every 10 years 

based on the United States Census. 

Each Council District is 

equal in population. 

Once elected, the mayor and 

members of City Council take 

office June 1 following the May 

General Election. In the event of 

a run-off election, the winning 

candidate takes office as soon as 

possible. 

Each council member gets paid 

$20 per meeting attended. The 

mayor is compensated the same 

amount as a council member and 

receives an additional $3,000 

annually. 

Anyone who meets the criteria 

can run for office by filing an 

application for a place on the 

ballot with the city clerk. The 

requirements are basic: candidates 

should be at least 18 years 

old, felony-free, U.S. citizen and 

resident of Texas for at least a 

year. Candidates should have resided 

in San Antonio for at least 

a year and in the district where 

they seek election for at least 6 

months. 

In addition, candidates must 

pay a $100 filing fee or submit 

a certain number of valid petition 

signatures. The number of 

signatures required varies with 

each district. 

Finally, officeholders and 

candidates for municipal office 

are required to submit personal 

financial statements, personal 

financial statement addendums 

and monthly bank statements 

within five business days of 

receipt of the statement from the 

financial institution to the elections 

manager in the Office of the 

City Clerk. 

For the May 2011 General 

Election, the application period 

for candidates was a month long, 

from February 14 to the close of 

business on Monday, March 14. 

And the candidates are:

Lauro A. Bustamante, 60, is 

a lawyer in San Antonio with 31 

years experience. 

Chris Forbrich, 27, is a technology 

consultant and owner of 

Storage Ark. He garnered 40 

percent of the vote in the race 

against Mary Alice Cisneros in 

the last election. 

Diego Bernal, 34, is an attorney 

and education advocate who 

grew up on the south side of SA. 

Ralph Medina, 55, retired San 

Antonio Fire Department district 

chief and long-time resident of 

District 1, Medina believes he 

truly understands the needs of 

his district. 

Carolyn Kelley, 53, nonprofit 

manager at the Hodge Group, also 

cofounded the Tobin Hill Community 

Association (THCA), 

which she currently leads as 

president. She has received many 

awards for civic work. 

DISTRICT 2 

Darrell “The Voice” Boyce, 

32, organized the first march “No 

More” to stop violence in the district 

and also an HIV prevention 

coordinator with San Antonio 

Fighting Back. 

Ivy R. Taylor, 40, public administration 

lecturer at the University 

of Texas-SA (incumbent). 

She has worked for Housing and 

Community Development Department 

and for Neighborhood 

Action. 

DISTRICT 3 

Elizabeth “Liz” Campos, 41, 

is an administrator at MAPCO 

Inc., who also worked with Senator 

Carlos Uresti. 

Jennifer V. Ramos, 34, selfemployed, 

(incumbent) is a 

member of the Audit Committee, 

y and the Committee for Intergovernmental 

Relation (IGR). 

She is also a member of the Metropolitan 

Planning Organization 

(MPO) and on the advisory board 

of the Alamo Area Council of 

Governments (AACOG). 

Ernest Zamora, Jr., 28, is 

shop foreman at Ernest Auto 

Repair on Roosevelt and video 

producer. Zamora has his own 

public access show and believes 

it’s important to get involved.

Leticia Cantu, 36, a regional 

sales and community affairs director 

at UAG, who has worked 

with Mayor Castro and in city 

government since 2004. 

Kathy Luna, 68, is a retired 

civil servant, Kelly AFB and 

president of the Rainbow Hills 

Area Neighborhood Association, 

member of the Department 

of Parks and Recreation, and 

coordinator of events of National 

Night Out Against Crime. 

Rey Saldaña, 24, adjunct professor, 

Trinity University, organized 

“Books in the District”, and 

worked to maintain a bookstore 

in the south of San Antonio

Lourdes Galvan, 64, worked

Patti Radle, and is a former

protect the water source. 

David Medina 25, a construction

student, is also San Antonio’s 

youngest councilmembers. 

Andro Mendoza, 42, is a marketing 

instructor at Northwest 

Vista College.

Pete Galaviz, 67, is a business 

owner and engineering consultant, 

this is the fourth time he is 

running for the seat. 

Ray Lopez, 61, retired from 

AT&T, (incumbent), has 34 years 

of corporate experience.

DISTRICT 7 

Gloria Rodriguez, 62, founder 

and former president and CEO 

of Avance, she has won several 

awards including “El Orgullo 

Award” and one form the “The 

National Council of Teachers 

of English.” She is particularly 

interested in making sure the 

roadways are safe and in repair. 

Cris Medina, 31, business 

owner, Diligent Specialty Mechanical, 

is also an officer in the 

US Naval Reserve and worked 

with Councilmember Justin Rodriguez. 

Fred A. Rangel, 56, business 

owner, ADCO Inc., is a local 

business leader who hopes to instill 

confidence and improve pay 

for the police force. Rangel also 

wants to solve the water shortage 

issues and protect the aquifer.

mil partidos jugados en la NBA

El alero y central Antonio 

McDyess estuvo fuera de acción 

por seis semanas recuperándose 

de lesión en su talón izquierdo. 

Posteriormente a su recuperación 

McDyess de nueva cuenta sufrió 

lesión en partido contra Spurs 

resultó con nariz quebrada, en esa 

ocasión no dejo de jugar, ya que 

fue forzado a usar una máscara 

de plástico protectora, la cual 

estuvo usando por el resto de la 

temporada. 

Antonio, nunca se imaginó 

que algún día tendría que vestir 

los colores de la franquicia negro 

plateada, sino que después 

de haber jugado para los clubes 

Denver Nuggets (1995-1997), 

Phoenix Suns (1887-1998). 

Nuggets de 1998 al 2002, New 

York Knicks del 2002 al 2004. 

Suns en el 2004. Detroit Pistons 

(2004-2009). Detroit se coronó 

campeón en la temporada 2003- 

04, derrotando a los Lakers de Los 

Angeles en el quinto partido de su 

serie a siete, temporada en la que 

no tuvo acción McDyess, ya que 

fue firmado posteriormente comenzando 

la temporada 2004-05. 

El 10 de julio del 2009, 

McDyess en calidad de agente 

libre, firmó contrato por tres años 

con los Spurs, equipo al que llego 

con la suma de 865 partidos jugados 

en la NBA. El miércoles 9 de 

marzo del 2011, se convirtió en 

fecha memorable para el orgullo 

de Quitman, Mississipi, ya que 

recibió la sorpresa de su brillante 

carrera en el baloncesto de paga. 

El entrenador en jefe de los Spurs, 

Gregg Popovich y sus asistentes 

Mike Budenholzer, Don Newman, 

Brett Brown, Chipa Engelland, 

Chad Forcier y Jacque Vaughn, 

antes de comenzar el partido Spurs 

vs. Pistons jugado en el AT&T 

Center, tomaron la decisión de 

honrar a McDyess, alineándolo 

en la quinteta estelar. 

Con esta excelente medida 

McDyess entró al dorado libro de 

récords de la National Basketball 

Association, ya que sumó su partido 

número 1,000 jugado en un 

lapso de 15 temporadas. 

Spurs salió airoso con la victoria 

ante Detroit (108-103), la 

cual no fue fácil de conseguir ya 

que los Pistons cerraron fuerte el 

cuarto tiempo superando a Spurs 

con marcador de 29-23 unidades. 

Posteriormente McDyess, rebasó 

los mil partidos, jugando en casa 

contra Sacramento Kings, y de 

visitantes contra Rockets de Houston 

y el Heat de Miami. 

Al historial de Antonio 

McDyess, se le atribuyen los 

honores de haber militado en el 

seleccionado nacional (U.S, Basketball 

Team), con el que logró 

colaborar durante la Olimpiada 

de Sydney, Australia 2000. En 

la NBA se le ha negado obtener 

anillo de campeón mundial, sin 

embargo a cómo han estado jugando 

los Spurs, es probable que 

tenga la fortuna de alzar el trofeo 

Larry O’Brien. 

“Me siento bendecido y contento 

por los éxitos logrados a lo 

largo de mi carrera. He superado 

lesiones, y siempre trato de mejorar 

mi estilo de juego. El cansancio 

es lógico sentirlo ya que son 

varios años sobre la duela. Espero 

que este año con Spurs gané mi 

primer campeonato de la NBA”, 

dijo McDyess. 

“ McDyess, para los Spurs siempre 

fue un rival duro de vencer. Él 

fue consistente en sus encestes, 

jugando para otros equipos y cuando 

jugó para Detroit, ya que nos 

daba bastante pelea. Qué bueno 

que hoy lo tenemos con nosotros.

compañero de la calidad humana de

Autora chilena, Isabel Allende, compartirá 

experiencias con las mujeres de San Antonio

Women & Girls Development Fund 

de San Antonio Area Foundation, 

se unirá con una de las mujeres más 

influenciables de Latinoamérica, la 

autora Isabel Allende. Allende será la 

oradora principal del evento “Women, 

Wisdom…Wine Poetry Slam Luncheon”, 

que tendrá lugar a las 11:30 

a.m., el sábado 26 de marzo en el hotel 

Grand Hyatt. 

Compartiendo una visión con aquellas 

mujeres que tienen un gran potencial, 

y que desean cumplir sus más 

deseadas metas, Woman & Girls 

Development Fund se enfocará en 

los puntos más importantes para que 

las mujeres aprovechen de escuchar 

experiencias excepcionales que serán 

de gran ayuda para cumplir sus metas 

a corto y largo plazo. 

“Sin duda alguna, ayudar a los 

demás nos da la oportunidad de apoyar 

un cambio positivo en la sociedad, y 

crear un mejor mundo”, dijo Terry 

Brechtel, directora ejecutiva de Alamo 

Regional Mobility Authority y copresidente 

de Women & Girls Development 

Fund. “Qué mejor causa que apoyar 

un fondo especialmente diseñado para 

mejorar y cambiar la vida de las mujeres 

y niñas de San Antonio”. 

Dentro de los enfoques especiales se 

encuentra el grupo de poesía, en el cual 

participarán las mujeres más destacadas 

y voluntarias en la comunidad de 

San Antonio, quienes irán de la mano 

con jovencitas de Boys & Girls Club 

para formar parte de una competencia 

de escritura creativa y de una presentación 

artística. 

Los participantes son, Juez Toni 

Arteaga, de la Corte de Distrito 57; 

Dya Campos, directora de programas 

públicos de H-E-B; Trish DeBerry, 

presidente de DeBerry Coody; y 

Michelle Thomas, asistente vicepresidente 

de asuntos externos. 

La presencia de Allende, considerada 

como una de las autoras con 

libros más leídos en español, servirá 

de gran experiencia para los invitados. 

Allende es una novelista que ha ganado 

premios por su vívida narración 

de cuentos en homenaje a las mujeres. 

Entrelazando los elementos del mito 

y el realismo, que con frecuencia son 

basados en su trabajo, y en sus propias 

experiencias personales, Allende ha 

logrado difundir sus conocimientos 

ante lectores en toda Latinoamérica, y 

en varios países del mundo. 

Sus libros han sido traducidos en 

más de 27 lenguajes, y son considerados 

dentro de los más vendidos 

internacionalmente. La novela de Allende 

de 1999, “Hija de la Fortuna”, 

fue seleccionada por la selección de 

libros, Oprah’s Book Club selection. 

La autora fue ganadora del prestigioso 

premio, Dorothy and Lillian Gish, 

concedido a escritores que contribuyen 

a la belleza del mundo. Allende, en 

el 2004 fue situada en American 

Academy of Arts and Letters, y no 

hace mucho tiempo recibió el Premio 

Nacional de Literatura de Chile 2010. 

Dentro de sus libros más destacados 

se encuentran, “De Amor y de Sombra”, 

“El Zorro”, “Inés del Alma Mía”, 

“La Casa de los Espíritus”, “Paula”, 

“Retrato en Sepia”, y la famosa novela 

que ahora se puede ver hasta en la tele, 

“Eva Luna”. 

En 1996, Allende fundó la Fundación 

Isabel Allende, en memoria 

de su hija. La fundación sirve como 

apoyo a organizaciones no lucrativas 

en San Francisco y Chile, y tiene como 

misión proporcionar a niñas y mujeres 

información y apoyo en temas como, 

educación, protección de violencia, 

explotación, discriminación y salud. 

Women & Girls Development Fund 

es una organización que tiene como 

misión formar una comunidad llena 

de nuevos líderes y programas que 

sirvan como apoyo a las mujeres y 

niñas a que logren conseguir sus metas, 

y con la ayuda de San Antonio Area 

Foundation, el servicio personalizado 

ha llegado a juntar donadores y organizaciones 

caritativas para el beneficio 

de las mismas.
