San Antonio author returns to his roots

John Phillip Santos, 52, absent 

from San Antonio for more than 21 

years, has returned to share a wealth 

of knowledge, a tale of long-forgotten 

beginnings, in his latest tome, “The 

Farthest Home is in an Empire of 

Fire: A Tejano Elegy.” 

“I was always rooted in San Antonio,” 

he told La Prensa. 

His first book, “Places Left Unfinished 

at the Time of Creation,” is 

about his father and explores the family 

history in the context of an entire 

culture, including passages about 

growing up in San Antonio. It also 

investigates the mystery of his grandfather’s 

death and weaves it all into 

a fabric of the Mexican-American 

experience. The book was a finalist 

for the National Book Award in 1999. 

“Book one is about how Mexicans 

deal with mental illness, poverty, 

hunger, dislocation, dispossession,” 

Santos said. “The second is an epic 

of forgotten history.” 

“Empire of Fire” is an exploration 

of his mother’s lineage, indeed, an 

epic tale that required Santos to use 

every resource to overcome the daunting 

task of rediscovering history.

So you want to write a book? 

What you need to know about 

self-publishing

Just like everything in life, selfpublishing 

comes with a list of 

pros and cons that all need to be 

taken into consideration. While 

this choice may be smart, costeffective 

and lets you maintain 

full control over the publishing 

process, it comes with a list of 

drawbacks that need to be mulled 

over as well. 

Nowadays, with websites like 

lulu.com, self-publishing has 

gained popular recognition. Since 

it’s inexpensive and most writers 

have little to no budget, choosing 

this path brings the level 

of difficulty from “extreme” to 

“moderate.” 

There are several ways to selfpublish 

and no actual steps to 

follow. This process is different 

for every aspiring author, but 

there are a few things that will 

help when making your decision. 

Knowing the ups and downs of 

self-publishing and being able 

to weigh your options will guide 

you in your choice. 

Below is a list of UPS and 

DOWNS gathered from selfpublished 

authors, ehow.com, 

and other online sources to better 

prepare you for this long and 

windy road. 

UP: Print-on-demand – If you 

simply want to publish a book, 

there are several vanity houses 

that will print just a few copies 

for a few hundred dollars. 

Print-on-demand is ideal for runs 

between 25-500 copies. Instead 

of printing on traditional printing 

equipment, pages are printed 

using a high-end copier, giving 

your book a better look. They 

will also machine-bind your 

book. Take a look at luniverse. 

com or Trafford.com for more 

information on this option. 

DOWN: Preparation – The 

amount of time that goes into 

self-publishing in intense. Not 

only do you have to be prepared 

to sell yourself, your book, do 

all self-promotion and more, but 

you also have to be ready to do all 

your own proofing and editing, 

which can take a very long time. 

Since you are close to your work, 

catching mistakes can be tricky. 

You also have to be prepared 

to handle distribution or find a 

distributor which can be very 

time-consuming. On top of all 

the research that comes into play, 

self-publishing can easily take up 

80 hours in a week. Be prepared 

to take on an entire new life. 

UP: Format – Since you are 

the publisher, you get to decide 

the size of your book, the layout 

and the overall format. You can 

publish hardcover, softcover, ebook 

or a combination of the three. 

It’s important that you learn all 

the standard sizes, but what you 

do from there is all up to you. 

Having this kind of freedom can 

be liberating in self-publishing. 

DOWN: Shop around – You 

will aggressively have to shop 

around if you really want your 

book to be a success. As a writer 

and soon-to-be author, it’s important 

to know your competition 

in order to have successful sales. 

Typically a publisher or publicist 

will do this for you, but as a selfpublisher 

it’s 100 percent up to 

you. Don’t be shocked to see the 

amount of books that fall into 

your category, nor let it sway 

you from publishing your work. 

Take from them what you like 

and don’t like. By looking and 

researching other books, you 

will have a better hold on what 

your book should read, look and 

feel like. 

UP: Direct Printing – Instead 

of producing a different piece 

of film for each color of each 

page (especially with children’s 

books), files can be transferred 

directly to a printing plate with 

a directto-press printer. You will 

eliminate film costs and save 

time as well. 

Here are a few helpful tips 

in gathering your ideas and 

deciding whether or not to selfpublish. 

• Most publishing companies 

pay authors a royalty between 

8 and 10 percent of sales; selfpublishers 

can increase that to 

50 percent or more 

• Get mentally prepared for 

self-publishing. It truly takes a lot 

of drive, initiative and motivation 

• Make sure that your book is 

well-edited and proofread several 

times. Once your book is 

published there is no going back. 

• Make sure your book is 

complete with a cover, dedication, 

title page, copyright, ISBN 

and back cover. The little details 

have a tendency of getting lost 

in the mix. 

• Make a list of reasons why 

you want to self-publish. Is it 

to get rich? To simply get your 

thoughts out? This will help you 

determine your ultimate goal and 

how much time you are willing 

to dedicate. 

• Take time to think about your 

title. Titles sell. A great title can 

carry a book a long way. Don’t 

settle on the first one that comes 

to mind. Make sure it’s exactly 

what you want. 

• Get an ISBN number. This 

will allow your book to be placed 

in other book databases and on 

amazon.com. This will further 

help with sales. 

• Share your book with your 

family and friends. Have a mixer 

or another event where you can 

sign copies and sell your books. 

Most will show up and support 

your endeavors.

The beloved Dr. Seuss classic 

“Green Eggs and Ham” celebrates 

50th Anniversary.

Fifty years later, thanks to a 

$50 bet and a 50-word challenge, 

America celebrates one of its literary 

treasures, “Green Eggs and 

Ham” by Dr. Seuss. 

Perhaps you remember the joy 

of reading your first Dr. Seuss 

book. Maybe it was “The Cat 

in the Hat.” Do you remember 

imagining what “Green Eggs and 

Ham” might taste like? 

“Green Eggs and Ham,” which 

celebrates its 50th anniversary, 

consists of just fifty words. The 

whimsical book is a result of a bet 

Seuss made with his publisher that 

he could indeed write an entire 

book with just fifty words. He 

won the bet and in doing so created 

one of America’s best-loved 

children’s books. 

Dr. Seuss was the pseudonym 

for Theodor Seuss Geisel, who 

was born March 2, 1904, in 

Springfield, MA. He began his 

writing career with a doctorate 

in literature earned from Oxford

Seuss also formed lasting relationships 

there - he married Helen 

Palmer in 1927, whom he met at 

Oxford. 

His earliest literary work was 

writing funny stories and cartoons 

for a magazine called “Judge.” 

He also wrote for iconic magazines 

such as Life and Vanity 

Fair. The first book was “And to 

Think That I Saw It on Mulberry 

Street,” which he wrote while 

on a boat. The title almost went

from countless publishers. 

Lucky for us, Seuss was persistent 

and with the help of a friend in the 

publishing business got the book 

published and launched one of the 

most successful careers in writing. 

In 1954, Seuss’s publisher sent 

him a list of 400 words with a 

special task. He asked Seuss to 

cut the list to 250 words suitable 

for use in a children’s book. The 

idea was to see how many words 

a first grade child could learn. 

From that list came the classic, 

“The Cat in the Hat.” That title, 

of course, became an all time 

children’s favorite. 

Sometime after the success 

of “The Cat in the Hat,” Seuss 

received the now famous challenge 

to write a book using just 

fifty words. A simple but delightful 

read, the only word longer 

than one syllable in the book is 

“anywhere.” Seuss met the challenge 

handily, and the critically 

acclaimed “Green Eggs and Ham” 

was born. 

Seuss left a lasting legacy with 

more than 500 million of his books 

in circulation in at least eight different 

languages. It could be that 

Seuss has become the best-selling 

children’s book author of all time.

Who hasn’t heard the story of 

“How the Grinch Stole Christmas” 

or been enthralled with the party 

atop the tree in “Go Dog’s Go?” 

Many of Seuss’s books inspired 

people to create other works; some 

have even graced the silver screen. 

“Horton Hears a Who” directed by 

Jimmy Hayward and Steve Martino 

and “How the Grinch Stole 

Christmas” were both box office 

hits. The movie included big name 

actors such as Jim Carrey, Steve 

Carell and Carol Burnett. 

Throughout its 50-year tenure, 

“Green Eggs and Ham” has 

inspired a recipe on the Food 

Network, skits for Saturday Night 

Live, movies, cartoons and countless 

activities for children as well 

as adults. 

Seuss died September 24, 1991, 

leaving behind a treasure of stories 

that will delight children and 

adults for many years to come. 

So gather your loved one’s 

around the breakfast table and 

share a plate of Green eggs and 

Ham. Afterwards let the kids Hop 

on Pop, but if it’s raining outside, 

keep an eye out for cats in hats. 

Now, in honor of “Green Eggs 

and Ham,” my personal account 

of my own disdain for tomatoes. 

I do not like those darn tomatoes. 

I do not like them on my bread. 

I do not like them on my bed. 

I do not like them with my meat. 

It’s something I would never eat. 

I do not like them in my salsa. 

I do not like them with my pasta. 

Please keep them far away 

from me. 

I do despise them, can’t you see? 

Tomato soup or juice or paste 

Would nothing more than go 

to waste. 

Although I’ve smelled and tried 

and tasted 

There’s nothing more I’ve ever 

hated. 

Happy Birthday, “Green Eggs 

and Ham,” and thank you Dr.

Self-publishing may become new trend

Self-published titles topped 

764,000 in 2009 as traditionally 

published titles dipped to 288,355, 

according to Publishers Weekly. 

Together, the report says, the 

total number of books published 

was more than a million, an 87 

percent increase from 2008, and 

due exclusively to the explosion 

in self-publishing. 

Economics and opportunity are 

major forces behind the trend. Even 

a well-established author with access 

to advances from publishers 

and a built-in audience may be 

thinking twice about self-publishing 

because the numbers are simply 

better. Why accept 15 percent of 

sales when self-publishing can get 

an author up to 70 percent? 

There is something available for 

every taste in the self-published 

world of books, from self-help 

to non-fiction autobiographical 

treatises and pure art in the form of 

fiction and poetry. Most titles are 

available online from all the typical 

sources like Amazon, Barnes 

and Noble, and other well-known 

outlets. Others must be purchased 

directly from the publishing house 

or author. 

The list of self-published titles 

contributes to every genre – and 

like their respective authors, the 

various approaches are unique and 

surprising. Some represent a labor 

of love to honor someone, others 

set forth a fictional story the author 

was compelled to tell. All have one 

thing in common, the authors have 

a message to share and are willing 

to work very hard on the entire 

process – from creating the content 

to editing to publishing, packaging, 

promotion and publicity -- and 

most importantly, investing themselves 

and their cash completely. 

The result is mixed, in a sense, 

because there may be some tomes 

that perhaps should not have been 

published from a purely business 

perspective. But the fact that more 

than three quarters of a million 

unique titles were self-published 

in 2009 portends a significant trend 

and the democratization of the written 

word. The middleman losing 

ground and quickly losing control 

– and with technological advances, 

all are free to express themselves 

in published form, creating a new 

digital headache for traditional 

publishers and cracking the book 

market wide open. 

It may be for that very reason that 

companies like Apple and Barnes 

and Noble recently announced programs 

for self-publishing authors. 

Apple offers digital self-publishing 

for the Ipad that yields 70 percent 

of the revenue for self-publishers, 

and Barnes and Noble created 

PubIt! for authors to upload their 

works and sell them online. Amazon 

has been in the field much 

longer, but recently changed its 

formula, increasing its payout to 70 

percent from 35 percent depending 

on the price of the e-book. 

A LOOK AT LOCAL SELF- 

PUBLISHED AUTHORS 

“Things I Wish I Had Taught 

My Son - And Still Can” by Jesus 

Ramirez was published May 26, 

2010. The book, listed in the Families 

and Relationships category and 

published through outskirtspress. 

com, is a delightful read. 

Ramirez, father of eight, started 

writing daily e-mails to his son 

when he left for college. Each message 

is a jewel unto itself – packed 

with wisdom and sometimes even 

terrific practical knowledge. From 

how to change a tire to figuring out 

the names of all those gadgets in 

the toolbox to the importance of the 

concept of balance in life, Ramirez 

covers the gamut. 

The resulting volume, published 

with the permission of his son, is 

a collection of information worth 

reading for everyone. The book is 

well written and humorous – there 

were parts that made me laugh 

aloud, so that I had to explain myself 

to whoever was present. 

The first book contains 120 

lessons/e-mails and is well worth 

the time and investment. The physical 

book is nicely printed and available

In “No Greater Sacrifice” by 

Armando Garcia, the author 

pays homage to his mother, Dolores 

Garcia, who succeeded as 

young widow and mother of ten 

children. The autobiographical 

work describes the journey of the 

large Hispanic family anchored by 

Dolores, who worked two jobs not 

just to make ends meet, but to teach 

her children the power of determination 

and responsibility. 

Starting out in Laredo, TX, 

Dolores taught her children her 

personal formula for success: work 

hard, plan ahead, and never give 

up on your dreams. That mix of 

optimism and fortitude rings clear 

in Garcia’s book, which was clearly 

written with love and admiration 

for the woman who inspired him 

to achieve his goals. 

The touching story includes 

photos and passages wonderfully 

descriptive passages about his early 

life in Laredo. The selection is 

available in soft and hard cover at

Paul S. Levy, author of “Alison,” 

a fictional tale of fantasy 

and intrigue, has published several 

articles and poems and composed 

more than one hundred songs. He

LP: How old were you when 

you decided you wanted to become 

a writer? 

Híjole, I was so young that I 

thought that “I saw a bat who wore 

a hat” was a great poem! 

And by the time I was eight, I 

was already plotting out stories. 

Unfortunately, I thought that you 

couldn’t really BE a writer unless 

you wrote about the kind of things 

you saw in books-- things about 

New York, and about mainstream 

USA culture. I’d never seen ANY- 

THING in writing that reminded

my cultura. 

LP: How would you describe 

yourself? 

I’m one of fifty primos from a 

big family in the West-Side barrios 

of San Antonio. I come from 

a long line of San Antonians going 

back several nations, so I REALLY 

love this city, like so far back it’s 

imprinted on my genes! I’m adventurous, 

sencilla, imaginative and 

loving. I love garage sales and reusing 

items in new ways. (Pobreza 

taught me to re-cycle before it was 

even fashionable to be green!) I 

love human beings (especially 

kids), languages, cuentos, humor, 

junkyard antiques, books, old 

license plates, and big cenas with 

my familia. I’m creative, love to 

perform to large audiences, love 

to learn new things, and my house 

(“Casa del Angel”) is decorated 

in Antique Mexican Rancho, and 

frequently has racoons and tacuaches 

visit the backyard to eat the 

cat food!

His journey to the culmination of 

this work is its own story – and the 

book, like Santos himself, is the sum 

of his experiences. He travels across 

the globe in search of answers and 

tells of conquistadors and those who 

came to the New World in search of 

their own answers. 

“Ultimately, we are all mestizos,” 

he said. And his search through the 

past, studying his ancestors, bore this 

out. Everyone in America is part of 

that fabric, with ancestors who set out 

to new places, always mixing with 

others, Santos explained. 

As he writes in the book, the story 

is “It is an American story that began 

in la otra America, before Jamestown 

or Plymouth Rock, but it could have 

been anywhere in the world.” 

He tells about a place called “La 

Zona Perfecta,” which is the repository 

of our collective memories and 

experiences. 

For Santos, the story is more than 

his family’s memoirs - it is a universal 

tale. 

“It connects ourselves to our own 

deepest sources in the story of civilization 

– to the profound mysteries 

of the human experience,” Santos 

explains. 

His lifelong pursuit for the truth 

was not always on the forefront, in 

fact, he avoided it. Nevertheless, 

while he thought he was diverting 

his attention away from the search, he 

was actually learning and developing 

the tools he would need. 

His journey includes time as a poet, 

journalist, filmmaker, award-winning 

writer and producer of documentaries 

for CBS and PBS. Much of his work 

took him across the globe, ostensibly 

to film, but slowly, pieces of his past 

and ancient history came together 

and Santos was able to complete the 

memoir. 

Born and raised in San Antonio, 

the author moved to live and work in 

New York City during the late eighties, 

and finally returned to his home 

in 2005. A graduate of Churchill 

High School and University of Notre 

Dame, Santos is the first Mexican- 

American Rhodes Scholar selected to 

study at Oxford University and a recipient 

of several prestigious awards, 

including the Academy of American 

Poets’ Prize at Notre Dame and the 

Oxford Prize for fiction. 

“Studying at Oxford was the turning 

point that marked the rest of my 

life,” Santos said. “Oxford is the city 

of the world.” 

But he has a vision of San Antonio 

that brought him home, where 

he is now settled with his wife, 

Frances, who teaches at Jefferson 

High School. They live with their 

baby girl, Francesca de la Luz, born 

April 12. 

Santos says he is home. 

“I believe San Antonio is the 

cultural center in so many ways,” 

he said. “We are uniquely rooted in 

the epic of New Spain- Mexico and 

the American Republic asset in the 

Latino world.”

People! I think the whole human 

raza is amazing, strong, and 

beautiful. 

LP: Why did you decide to 

write children’s books? 

Children are the most open to 

learning, to imagining, and they 

have the biggest capacity for faith 

and vision. Sometimes, we get 

more set in our ways and closed 

off to the magic all around us as 

we age. Some wonderful people 

keep that openness to magic and 

learning all their life-- they are the 

most open to miracles, so miracles 

often happen to them. I’m lucky to 

know dozens of people in their 90s 

in San Antonio who are like that, 

and thousands of children like that! 

LP: Why did you return to San 

Antonio? 

Oh, that’s an easy answer. The 

tougher question is why did I ever 

leave? Yes, I’ve always been open 

to adventure and learning (and 

travel certainly provides that) but 

having San Antonio as my home is 

a spiritual feeding of my soul, it lets 

me “channel” the voices from my 

culture, my heritage, and the centuries 

that preceded me. As I write, 

I hear the voices of my ancestors 

whispering over my shoulder, guiding 

me. Yes, I still hear them when 

I travel elsewhere. But at their age, 

the travel gets a little hard on them, 

rattles their arthritic bones a bit! 

LP: How would you describe 

your “voice?” 

Oh it’s very street, very much “la 

voz de la gente”, somewhat rural

writing as a serious career 

choice? 

Write, write, and write some 

more. The more you do it, the better 

you get. Learn to edit yourself, 

to rewrite, polish, go at it again, 

perform surgery on your own creative 

beauties, then be their analyst, 

assess the total, and go at it again. 

Speak from your most inner voice, 

the one that escapes when you’re 

not thinking. 

LP: If you were to choose only 

ONE book to keep, which one 

would it be? 

Híjole, that’s TOUGH! Probably 

“One Hundred Years of Solitude,” 

by Gabriel García Márquez, be- 

cause in it, I recognized so many 

of my family members and cultural 

values. 

LP: What book are you reading 

right now? 

Jacqueline Woodson’s miracle’s 

boys. 

LP: What is your favorite thing 

to do? 

Create. 

LP:What are you the most 

proud of in your literary career? 

Well this year one of my children’s 

books, What Can You DO 

with a Paleta?, which re-paints our 

barrios, not as ugly, but as beautiful 

and loving and filled with heritage, 

won five major awards, including 

the Américas Award, for which 

I will be flown to the Library of 

Congress to accept this fall, but one 

of the things that struck me deepest 

was when I won the Art of Peace 

Award in the year 1999 for writing 

which contributed to peace, justice 

and human understanding. 

LP: Tell us something most 

people don’t know about you. 

My pronunciation in Russian is 

outstanding! My college instructor 

kept insisting I was Russian, till I 

informed him that my whole family 

for centuries back was Mexican! 

LP: What do you want for the 

future? 

I would like to see our children 

be given more positive values, more 

respect for the sanctity of being human, 

more faith in the miracles of 

life, less T.V. and videogame time, 

and less violence. If I can be a small 

part of making that happen through 

my books, my performances, and 

my speeches, I’ll feel very blessed. 

LP: How do you want future 

generations to remember you? 

As a good human being, and as 

a writer who captured the authentic 

beauty of a people and a culture. 

San Antonio is lucky to have 

such a literary gem as is Carmen 

Tafolla. She gives a voice to the 

community, many who are often 

ignored and unheard. 

The author ended the interview

“We have such treasures all 

around us in this city-- look and 

appreciate them-- your grandmother’s

sense of humor, your favorite tree

books, but the Alchemist is by far my favorite. 

This little book, which if my memory serves 

me well I read in two nights, both motivated 

and inspired me in ways I never imagined. The 

allegorical novel was first published in English 

in 1988 and since been translated into countless 

other languages. The book has made its 

way around the world because of its simple yet 

profound messages of love and truth. I distinctly 

recall reading the words “all people who 

are happy have God within them.” Oh how that 

sentence seemed to have lifted itself from the 

page! After reading this book, prepare yourself 

for an enlightening and uplifting experience. 

Readers will surely be launched into a journey 

of self discovery and transformation.

Dark Lover

From January 2009 through July 

2010 I’ve read a total of 91 books. 

Needless to say I heart books. So 

for me to pick my absolute favorite 

is difficult. As it is still summer I’ve 

chosen a great poolside read, the “Black 

Dagger Brotherhood Series,” by J.R. Ward. (I 

couldn’t pick just one.) Yes, a vampire series 

but it’s nothing like the popular PG-13 tween 

saga. Think “Underworld” but 10 times sexier. 

The Brotherhood is a militia group charged 

with protecting the vampire race against the 

Lessoning Society, a group of undead minions 

lead by the Omega. The action is brutal, the 

men are big, the women hot and the plot thick. 

Ward has even created a language for them 

and each book comes with a short glossary. 

Reading them in order is best. Book 1, “Dark 

Lover.”

Notes to Myself is by far my 

favorite read. It’s the only 

book that I can pick up anytime 

I’m feeling down that will lift my

numbers, it doesn’t matter where you start. 

Whether it’s the first page or the middle of 

the book, any place is a good starting point. 

When I read this book, I feel as though I 

am reading someone’s private journal. It’s a 

true testament that even good things happen 

late in life. Hugh Prather writes with clarity, 

honesty and simplicity. When it comes to 

reading, that’s all I can ask for.

The Bible as History

El libro que siempre recomiendo 

y que acostumbro regalar es “The 

Bible as History”, escrito hace más 

de medio siglo por Warner Keller 

y que a través del tiempo mantiene 

vigencia por lo ameno de su texto, su originalidad 

y obviamente por la fuerza espiritual 

del tema: su idea original es compaginar los 

textos bíblicos con los descubrimientos arqueológicos. 

Su estilo narrativo es ágil y la amenidad de 

su contenido permite al lector abrir cualquiera 

de sus páginas y encontrar ahí temas de gran 

interés, sin la necesidad de leer los capítulos 

de principio a fin para encontrar la esencia la 

historia. 

Si bien, es un libro relativo a la Biblia, puede 

ser de gran interés para los cristianos o para los 

lectores no creyentes, lo único que se requiere 

es curiosidad intelectual. Su edición en inglés 

es de fácil acceso en Amazon, por ejemplo 

con precios de 8 a 20 dólares, dependiendo la 

presentación. En español lleva el título de “La 

Biblia Tenía Razón” con la circunstancia de 

que es difícil conseguirlo.

King’s epic Dark Tower series.

when he creates the set of Tolkien-like novels 

that will keep you reading until you reached the 

very last word of the last novel. 

In the first book of the Dark Tower series, 

meet Roland of Gilead, the last gunslinger, and 

get immersed in the quest for the Dark Tower. 

Roland’s entire journey spans seven volumes. 

Be prepared to lose some sleep - King hurls 

the reader into a war of good versus evil complete 

with its own worlds, a fantasy intermingled 

with reality that you won’t be able to stop reading. 

For those of you who end up liking the series 

as much as I did – look for an eighth book tentatively 

titled The Wind through the Keyhole.

you thinking about it long after you’ve 

finished reading it. Well, for me this was 

one of those books. 

Anna Fitzgerald was designed to be the perfect 

biological donor for her sister Kate, who was 

diagnosed with leukemia at age 2. When Kate is 

16 and Anna is 13, Kate needs a kidney transplant 

and Anna refuses to give up one of hers. She hires 

a lawyer to petition for medical emancipation 

from her parents, so that she alone can make decisions 

about her body. It’s a decision that threatens 

to tear the family apart, from her mother who 

gave up a law practice to be a stay-at-home mom, 

an older brother who feels left out, and her father 

who wavers between choosing sides. 

I have never read a book and cried so hard. 

I have never hugged my sister so hard. A must 

read!

The Iliad

Mythology allows a person to go 

back in time and become a part of a 

world that we can only see in comic 

books or TV. Homer’s book “The 

Iliad” is among my favorites because it 

can engage a reader. Whether one is looking 

for a love story, a heroic tale, or even mystery, 

one can find it all in “The Iliad.” 

It is a story that will allow the mind to wonder 

about the possibilities and capabilities these historical 

heroes and gods held at their fingertips. 

The story takes place on the epic battle grounds 

of Greece, after the Trojan War had begun. It recounts 

one of the greatest fights, between Prince 

Hector of Troy and Achillies, a semi-god. Upon 

the fall of Hector, the city of Troy was destroyed, 

but Homer has more to tell in the book that leaves 

you to interpret and imagine the war, the gods, the 

love and the envy. Enjoy.

The Last Song

I have to say that “The Last 

Song” is an all-time favorite read 

of mine. This book is a combination 

of a coming of age novel about 

romance and the love shared amongst a 

family. 

The novel begins with the arrival of 17 year 

old Veronica “Ronnie” Miller and her ten year 

old brother Jonah to Wilmington, North Carolina 

from New York. Miller is there to visit her father 

three years after their parents’ divorce. 

At first Ronnie holds a lot of anger and resentment 

towards her father, she finds ways to avoid 

spending time with him. Eventually she makes a 

few friends throughout the summer, some more 

friendly than others and even falls in love along 

the way. 

“The Last Song teaches important life lessons 

that a reader might not expect to learn, it is not 

your stereotypical teen love drama. I recommend 

this book to anyone who enjoys reading 

about love, whether it is between lovers or 

within a family.

Sus batallas no fueron inútiles, sino todo 

lo contrario. 

Que hubiera sido de la Revolución Mexicana, 

sin Pancho Villa, ya fuese como “bandolero” ó 

como general de división. No todo fue guerra 

y violencia, a él también le apasionaban los 

deportes de esa época, entre ellos el béisbol de 

Ligas Mayores.

Ulises tardó 10 años en su retorno, muchos creían 

que había muerto y trataban de desposar a su la 

familia del trono. Al mismo tiempo gastaban los 

bienes como si fueran los herederos. La historia 

se trata de amor, pasión y tracciones. A través de 

Ulises, Homero transporta el lector a una aventura 

tras otra.

Of all the books I have read the one 

that stuck out for me, like a splatter 

of red paint to canvas was Lois Lowery’s 

“The Giver”. I loved the imagery 

it provoked while reading it. Often,

black and white movie- unless the author suggest 

otherwise. Which if you have read this book, one 

can see the irony. This book is a different spin on 

ethically questioning rules set in place to run a

Experimentación e inconformismo 

pueden ser dos de las palabras 

que mejor definen su labor poética, 

pero es un poeta difícil de encasillar. 

Ninguna de las etiquetas adjudicadas 

por los críticos encaja con su poesía: 

poeta neo modernista en sus comienzos; 

más tarde, poeta existencial y, 

en ocasiones, poeta con tintes de 

surrealismo. 

Ángeles Mastretta nació el 9 

de octubre de 1949, en Puebla, 

México, es una reconocida escritora 

y periodista. Es conocida por crear 

personajes femeninos sugerentes y 

ficciones que reflejan las realidades 

sociales y políticas de México. Sus 

principales novelas son: Arráncame 

la vida, y Mal de amores, entre otras. 

Arráncame la vida tuvo gran 

popularidad en México y en el 

extranjero. Como consecuencia, 

Mastretta fue capaz de dedicarse con 

mayor asiduidad a su pasión por la 

narrativa. En 1997 ganó el Premio 

Rómulo Gallegos por otra de sus más 

aclamadas novelas, Mal de amores 

(publicada en 1996). 

Jorge Francisco Isidoro Luis 

Borges nació el 24 de agosto de 

1899, en Buenos Aires, Argentina. 

Fue uno de los autores más destacados 

de la literatura del siglo 

XX en este país. Publicó ensayos 

breves, cuentos y poemas. Su obra, 

fundamental en la literatura y en el 

pensamiento humano, ha sido objeto 

de minuciosos análisis y de múltiples 

interpretaciones, trasciende 

cualquier clasificación y excluye 

cualquier tipo de dogmatismo. Se 

le conoce como uno de los eruditos 

más grandes del siglo XX, lo cual no 

impide que la lectura de sus escritos 

suscite momentos de viva emoción 

o de simple distracción. 

Isabel Allende Llona nació en 

Lima, Perú, el 2 de agosto de 1942, 

es una escritora superventas chilena. 

Ha vendido más de 51 millones 

de ejemplares y su trabajo ha sido 

traducido a más de 27 idiomas. 

También fue directora suplente de la 

revista Mampato. En 1981, teniendo 

su abuelo 99 años y estando él mismo 

a las puertas de la muerte, comenzó a 

escribirle una carta que se convirtió 

en un manuscrito: La casa de los espíritus 

(1982), su primera novela y su 

obra más conocida. Ésta suscitó un 

gran interés y más tarde fue adaptada 

al cine (por Bille August) y al teatro. 

El humor es parte integral de sus 

escritos, ya sean periodísticos u obras 

literarias. Confiesa que se acostumbró 

a escribir de esta manera cuando 

era periodista y ahora, gracias a eso, 

puede ver la historia “detrás” de cada 

asunto, una visión alternativa. 

El Zorro: Comienza la leyenda 

(2005) es una biografía ficticia y 

la primera historia de los orígenes 

del héroe El Zorro, es una precuela 

a los eventos de la historia original 

del Zorro, la novela La maldición 

de Capistrano, escrita por Johnston 

McCulley y publicada en 1919. 

Ricardo Eliécer Neftalí Reyes 

Basoalto, nació el 12 de julio de 

1904 en Parral, Chile. Es mejor 

conocido por su seudónimo y, 

más tarde (1946), el nombre legal 

de Pablo Neruda, fue un poeta y 

militante comunista, considerado 

entre los mejores y más influyentes 

de su siglo, siendo llamado por el 

novelista Gabriel García Márquez 

el más grande poeta del siglo XX en 

cualquier idioma. 

También fue un destacado activista 

político, siendo Senador de la 

República, integrante del Comité

Gabriel José de la Concordia 

García Márquez nació en Aracataca,

Es conocido familiarmente 

como Gabo o Gabito (hipocorístico 

guajiro para Gabriel), desde que su 

compañero del diario bogotano El 

Espectador, José Salgar, comenzara 

a llamarle así. 

El genio, la popularidad y el carisma 

de Gabriel García Márquez lo 

hacen incomparable y distinguido 

entre los autores de la lengua española

the book industry one click 

at a time. 

Thanks to the explosive popularity 

of the Amazon Kindle and the 

Sony Reader, more and more people 

are packing books away and they’re 

going digital. 

E-books are ultra-light portable 

digital or electronic versions of paper 

books. Instead of being printed 

onto paper and bound into books, 

the text is formatted into a digital file 

and read via a special e-book reader, 

computer or other electronic device. 

Some of these devices can hold up 

to 200 electronic versions of your 

favorite books –imagine having 

200 books stored on a device that 

is about the size and weight of one 

paperback book. 

There are literally thousands of 

titles to choose from and the list 

continues to grow every day. If 

there isn’t a digital version of your 

favorite book today, there probably 

will be tomorrow. Not only is the

$25. With e-books you can download 

a book instantly and it is often 

cheaper than the paper edition (about 

$9.99 or less). 

E-books are also revolutionizing 

the world of college students. No 

more headaches of getting course 

books on time, paying for shipping 

charges or even worrying about what 

to do with old textbook that are no 

longer needed. As an alternative, 

students can turn to e-books. College 

students just need to make sure 

that course books come in e-book 

format. 

E-books are also available for 

downloading at public libraries, 

like the San Antonio Public Library. 

Compatible devices include Sony 

e-book readers, the Barnes & Noble 

Nook and the Borders Kobo, and 

most desktop or laptop computers. 

E-books are not meant to replace 

paper books. Instead, they provide 

an alternate reading choice for 

lovers of technology. They offer a 

new dimension to the written word, 

allowing books to be distributed and 

enjoyed so much more easily.

primera persona en ganar el Premio 

Nobel de Literatura, el 10 de 

diciembre de 1945 con este galardón

el cual recibió de manos del Rey 

Gustavo V de Suecia. En dicho 

homenaje se le llamó Reina de la 

Literatura Latinoamericana. Años 

después, en 1951 obtuvo el Premio 

Nacional de Literatura, Chile. 

Carlos Fuentes Macías nació 

en Panamá el 11 de noviembre 

de 1928, es uno de los escritores 

mexicanos más conocidos de finales 

del siglo XX, autor de novelas 

y ensayos, entre los que destacan 

Aura, La muerte de Artemio Cruz, 

La región más transparente y Terra 

Nostra. Recibió el Premio Rómulo 

Gallegos en 1977, el Premio Cervantes 

en 1987 y en 2009 la “Gran 

Cruz de Isabel la Católica”. Fue 

nombrado miembro honorario de la 

Academia Mexicana de la Lengua 

en agosto de 2001. 

Gran aficionado al cine, ha escrito 

guiones para numerosas películas, 

como Las dos Elenas, Las dos 

cautivas, El gallo de oro (1964, 

junto con Gabriel García Márquez 

y el director de la película Roberto 

Gavaldón), Un alma pura (1965), 

Tiempo de morir (1966, junto con 

Gabriel García Márquez), Pedro 

Páramo, Ignacio.

Spurs Sports & Entertainment 

(SS&E), bajo la dirección de la 

entrenadora Sandy Brondello, la 

noche del viernes 13 de agosto, 

le respondió excelentemente a 

la comunidad y al público en el 

AT&T Center, el cual presenció 

el encuentro contra su rival en 

turno, el Shock de Tulsa. 

Silver Stars con victoria de 94- 

74 celebró el homenaje ofrecido 

a pacientes y sobrevivientes del 

cáncer de mama. Las locales 

durante el partido vistieron uniformes 

color de rosa, para ir de 

acuerdo con el programa denominado 

Breast Health Awareness. 

Al concluir el partido jugadoras 

estelares y reservas, donaron 

sus respectivos uniformes, los 

cuales fueron puestos al mejor 

postor durante la tradicional 

subasta anual. Se logró recaudar 

la cantidad de $42,000, suma que 

fue presentada a la unidad móvil 

CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Health 

Systems Mobile Mammography 

Unit (MMU), la cual presta 

servicios a precios módicos de 

acuerdo al presupuesto de mujeres 

residentes en el Condado de 

Bexar y sus alrededores. 

Las camisetas que vistieron 

las estelares jugadoras, Becky 

Hammon, Roneeka Hodges y 

Chamique Holdsclaw, cada una 

se subastó por más seis mil 

dólares. “Toda mujer debe examinarse 

continuamente, ya sea con 

su doctor particular o en clínicas 

de la comunidad. Así se estarán 

beneficiando y previniendo de 

problemas físicos. Gracias por 

su apoyo en esta noble causa”, 

enfatizó Hammon. 

Por otro lado, Silver Stars en

en Minnesota. Hammon contribuyó

“San Antonio has a very low 

literacy level and it’s primarily 

a Hispanic problem,” said Barrera. 

“I thought it was important 

to promote the Latino cultures to 

have Latino books, so all of these 

books are bilingual and most of 

them are from Texas and they tell 

the story of our culture.” 

If you’re familiar with the 

south side then you probably 

know that this area lacks bookstores. 

“San Antonio isn’t a rich 

city, so people shop in their own 

neighborhood,” explained Barrera. 

“So when you have an entire 

south side of the city that doesn’t 

have bookstores, you’re left with 

only going to a few places where 

they carry books like H-E-B, 

Target or Walmart.” 

The books provided at 3 Rebecas 

are not typically found in 

major retail bookstores –which in 

themselves do not provide a vast 

selection of Chicano literature, 

let alone foreign language texts. 

“Those are bookstores that order 

whatever their corporate suggest,” 

stated the owner. 

Barrera has worked with Mayor 

Julian Castro in tackling with 

the low-literacy rate in San Antonio, 

encouraging families to 

read with their children at home. 

“It starts when you’re little,” she 

said. “It’s a lot harder to teach 

an adult how to read, than it is 

to teach a kid.” 

“A lot of our families didn’t 

finish school and children started 

working early,” she continued. 

“The need to support families 

became an issue and the language 

barrier became a huge problem 

for our community. What ends 

up happening is you have a very 

high drop-out rate and a low 

literacy rate in our city, and that 

prevents us from becoming economically 

successful.” 

All in all, the bookstore is 

an inspirational pillar to the 

community that spreads artistic 

growth and social involvement, 

building the cultural gap in San 

Antonio’s literary market by offering 

the community promising 

educational and fictional literature 

that is sure to satisfy readers
