SUMMER THEATRE CAMP AT SAC
July 8-17, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. – The San Antonio College Department of Theatre and Speech
Communication hosts a nine-day Summer Theatre Camp, which includes classes on acting,
improvisation and movement taught by professionals. Classes and rehearsals will
culminate in a public performance of a one-act play. San Antonio area students entering
grades 9 thought 12 are asked to apply by JUNE 30. This event will take place at the
McAllister Fine Arts Center located on 1300 San Pedro Ave., 78212 and the cost is $100

TERRA INCOGNITA
Through August 29 – Acquired in 2006, this suite of eight masterful color lithographs by
little-known French Symbolist Charles Dulac with working proofs for each print will be
shown for the first time at the McNay. The suite is a great example of French color lithography
at the end of the 19th century. The complete suite is quite rare – only a few are
known. General admission is FREE on Thursday nights and the first Sunday of the month.

La vida con Cristina
A little goes a long way

What if there was something
simple you could do every
day that would burn calories?
You’d do it, right? Researchers
and doctors say walking
has tons of benefits and cuts
breast cancer risk, protects
your bones, helps you sleep,
cuts down on aches and pains,
keeps you slimmer, helps ward
off senior moments, protects
your bones, and the list goes
on!
In fact, did you know that to
burn 100 calories it takes 20
minutes of brisk walking at 4
mph? That’s about the same
amount of calories contained
in two cookies, ½ cup of pudding
or ¼ cup of ice cream.
That’s some effort for just
those little extras!
I think we sometimes feel
that just a little bit of extra
food is not going to hurt. We
pass by our co-workers desks
and pick up candy, we still
think that we have to clean our
plates, and in fact, we might
even have a second helping
when we know we’re already
full. Remember that a little
goes a long way, that could be
used in a positive or negative
way.
The real secret to losing
weight is to learn to say NO to
a lot of the foods that we don’t
really account for in our day
–all of those little extra bites!
Whether you say NO (thank
you) out loud to your coworker
or you just say NO to
yourself when you’re tempted
to clean that plate; that may be
the 100 calories that you would
have to do an extra 20 minutes
of brisk walking to burn up!
Just ask yourself when you
are about to “pop” it in your
mouth. Am I really hungry, or
am I doing this out of habit?
Try writing down each “extra”
bite that you might eat for a
day and see if that could be the
reason you’re not losing those
pounds and inches.
There are only two “common
sense” ways to lose weight:
1. Consume fewer calories
than you burn… or
2. Burn more calories than
you take in.
Americans are strong believers
in #1 above. And best of
all, we like to do it without
ever being hungry. We do this
most often by getting our brain
to trick our tummy into feeling
full on less food.
Here are a few “secrets” to
accomplish this, or a combination
of the following:
1. One key to weight loss is
to drink a lot of water to help
your body feel satisfied so
you won’t over eat. If you add
apple cider vinegar and honey
to the water, you will have a
safe, natural fat-blasting tonic.
Mix a tablespoon of apple cider
vinegar with a teaspoon of
honey in an eight ounce glass
of water. Drink it 20 to 30
minutes before you sit down
each meal.
2. Drink a glass of Green
Tea about 20 minutes before
each meal.
3. When you sit down to
eat, place a small pillow in
the small of your back. Sit
back against the pillow and
your chair. The pillow helps to
make sure you sit up straight.
Eat slowly and your food will
travel to your lower stomach
much faster than usual and
send those “I’m full” signals
to your brain in record time
resulting in you eating fewer
calories.

SAN ANTONIO - From May
22 until August 1, a bilingual
exhibit at the Museo Alameda
at 101 S. Santa Rosa St., explores
the long-forgotten story
of the largest guest-worker
program in U.S. history.
On August 4, 1942, the U.S.
and Mexican governments instituted
the Bracero Program,
also known as the Mexican
Agricultural Labor Program,
to address labor shortages in
the United States during World
War II. More than 4 million
Mexican men came to work
the fields of the United States,
many of them experienced
farm workers.
The Bracero experience is
a bittersweet tale of exploitation
and opportunity. The
exhibition, which includes
photos from the famous photojournalist
Leonard Nadel
and audio clips of the braceros
and their families, is organized
into three main sections: their
expectations for the journey
north, the actual work they did
and the effects the program
had on family and communities
in Mexico and the United
States.
The exhibition hails from
the Smithsonian National Museum
of American History, and
documents the controversial
program, as well as the fact
that the braceros’ hard work
in the fields was one of the
most significant contributions
to the growth of America’s
agriculture economy.
Museo Alameda is the nation’s
largest Latino museum
and the first formal Smithsonian
affiliate. The exhibit will
be open Tues through Sunday,
from noon to 6 p.m. Admission
is $4 for adults $2 for
seniors, students, educators
and military.

Picks of the Week
“Spartacus: 50th Anniversary
Edition” (PG-13)
Kirk Douglas stars in this Stanley
Kubrick-directed Sword & Sandal
epic about a Roman gladiator who
leads a failed slave revolt against the
Roman Empire. “Spartacus” sports
a stellar supporting cast: Laurence
Olivier, Peter Ustinov (who won an
Oscar for his performance), Tony
Curtis, Jean Simmons and Charles
Laughton. The battle scenes, although
a half century old, are just
as thrilling as anything you saw in
Russell Crowe’s “Gladiator.” This
release is the restored director’s cut,
which includes the infamous bath
house scene between Olivier and
Curtis that was removed because of
its overt bisexual content.
“The Road” (R)
In the aftermath of an unspecified
global apocalyptic event, a father
and son (Viggo Mortensen, Kodi
Smit-McPhee) struggle to survive
in a savage world where most of
humanity has been wiped out,
cold-blooded cannibalistic fiends
lurk around every corner and the
inevitability of cruel death hangs
like a shroud over every waking
moment. So yeah. Feel Good Movie
of 2009, for sure.
“Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame:
Legends” (Unrated)
This 3-DVD set contains 46 performances
from the Rock and Roll
Hall of Fame induction ceremonies
including performances by Jimmy
Page, Jeff Beck, Paul McCartney,
Bruce Springsteen, Wilson Pickett,
The Doors & Eddie Vedder, Aretha
Franklin, Little Richard and, well,
just about everybody who had a
hit record between 1955 and 1995.
There’s also more than four hours of
bonus footage, including rehearsal
performances, interviews and induction
speeches.
“Stagecoach” (The Criterion
Collection) (Unrated)
John Wayne got his first big role
as The Ringo Kid in John Ford’s
epic Western about a perilous
Kirk Douglas in “Spartacus”
stagecoach journey from Arizona
to New Mexico. Some critics have
called this film the “Citizen Kane”
of Westerns, and I agree. “Stagecoach”
rewrote the genre and
created a template for the modern
Western film. John Wayne, in
the uncommon role of an outlaw,
delivers an absolutely riveting and
timeless performance; and John
Ford’s breathless cinematography
makes the film a feast for the eyes.
Truth be told, I am not a big fan
of Westerns, but there are a few
cowboy movies that are so well
done, I can’t help but love them.
“Stagecoach” is one of them. The
others (in case you were wondering):
“The Shootist” (also starring
The Duke), “Tombstone” (starring
Kurt Russell) and “The Man Who
Shot Liberty Valance” (Wayne
again, with Jimmy Stewart).

HOUSTON- El cantante Joan
Sebastian se ha convertido en
una leyenda del pueblo, logrando
mantenerse como uno
de los artistas más populares
dentro y fuera de México. Su
éxito sigue imparable y Texas
se preparara para recibirlo en
sus próximas presentaciones
junto a Marco Antonio Solís y
Alejandro Fernández.
Serán las ciudades de Houston

Fighting Championships, es
la primera promoción de artes
marciales mixtas, MMA (por
sus siglas en inglés) en su tipo
con estilo torneo. Bellator hará
su segunda parada de 2010 en
el estado de Texas, visitando la
ciudad de San Antonio, dicho
evento se llevará a cabo en el
Majestic Theatre este jueves a
partir de las 6 p.m.
El evento – que será transmitido
“en vivo” durante el
horario estelar, a través de todo
el país por FOX Sports Net y en
programas especiales con lo más
destacado el fin de semana por
NBC, Telemundo y mun2 – tendrá
lugar en el histórico teatro,
ubicado en 224 E. Houston
Street, en el corazón del centro
por eso creo que tiene que ser un
show diferente y mejor”, dijo.
Joan Sebastian, “El Poeta del
Pueblo”, ha logrado llegar a la
popularidad internacional gracias
a sus canciones, las cuales
nacen de su inspiración, basadas
en situaciones de su vida. Siempre
se ha identificado por ser un
ser humano honesto que no le da
miedo expresar sus sentimientos
y pensamientos.
“A veces es malo decir todo lo
que uno piensa, al cantar las canciones
tantas veces se puede llegar
a sentir un sentimiento raro
al cantar alguna pero no todas.
Me disculpo por que no pensé
ofender a nadie, si me preguntas
lo voy a decir. Te voy a dar
un ejemplo de una canción que
se llama “Veinticinco Rosas”,
que ha sido un gran éxito en mi
carrera deje de cantarla, pero
después de un tiempo empecé a
disfrutar de cantarla otra vez”,
dijo acerca de unas declaraciones
hechas en el pasado.
No sabría decir cuantas canciones
han sido escritas por
este talentoso hombre, pero al
preguntarle si hubiera deseado
escribir una canción que fue
obra de otro compositor, dijo.
“Hay muchas canciones que han
sido escritas que me gustan y
de San Antonio.
Este próximo jueves se efectuarán
las peleas semifinales de
peso medio 185 lbs. Figurando
el subcampeón del año pasado
Jared Hess contra el tremendo
peleador siberiano Alexander
Shlemenko y la esperada revancha
entre Bryan Baker y Eric
Schambari. Además de una pelea
especial de pesos pesados entre el

entrevista nos dimos cuenta de
una exclusiva, probablemente
Don Vicente Fernández cante
una vez más los temas de Joan,
como pasó en el disco “Para
Siempre”, que fue producido por
Joan y con el cual el “Charro de
Huentitlan” sumó muchos éxitos
a su carrera.
“Tengo canciones que estoy
escribiendo y que estoy produciendo
de la forma que yo
lo hago. Cuando le ofrecí canciones
a Vicente para el primer
álbum que le hice él ya estaba
listo. Tengo varias canciones ya
escritas pero necesito reunirme
con Vicente para ver si le gustan
y que vea la visión diferente que
tengo. Esa es la idea”, puntualizó
Sebastian.

tanta sensación en la familia
que pensé seria bueno grabarla
y la grabé no me esperaba esa

San Antonio – get ready to jazz
things up! The one and only San
Antonio Summer Art & Jazz Festival,
also known as SAS Fest, will
be hosting the eighth annual threeday
extravaganza starting June 4,
at the Crockett Park, 1300 North
Main Avenue at Cypress Street.
Free events include ten outstanding
jazz concerts and an arts and crafts
fair as well. Be sure to arrive on an
empty stomach to enjoy the delicious
Texas cuisine.
“It’s a great event,” said Anthony
Tobias, Executive Director,
Event Coordinator and Founder.
“It features Latin jazz, traditional
jazz and smooth jazz. Those who
have not been exposed to this
type of music not only find it to
be a relaxing venue, but an educational
venue where they can learn
and have a good time with their
families.”
SAS Fest will also feature two
free jazz workshops developed
for young musicians in middle
school and high school. Although
the workshops are aimed at underprivileged
school districts in San
Antonio, they are open to anyone
who wants to learn more about
jazz instruments, jazz music and
the music industry itself.
“We usually focus on two different
instruments each day,” stated
Tobias. “Anybody who’s anybody
is welcome to join in.”
A portion of the proceeds from
SAS Fest benefits Any Baby Can
(ABC), a nonprofit organization
that provides free services to
families with children through 12
years of age and who have serious
illnesses, disabilities and/or special
needs.
“I lost my brother to cancer so
my heart feels out to any organization
itself that helps or spends time
helping people that have cancer,”
confessed Tobias. “But the fact that
they help children has a double
impact, so I like being affiliated
with them – they need to be known
out there so I’m glad we can help
them in that aspect.”
SAS Fest will host about 50
children: 25 from the Methodist
Children’s Home and 25 from St.
Peter-St. Joseph Children’s Home,
two great non-profit organizations
that provide temporary care and
housing for children who have

more for the community and it
would not have been possible
without the help and support of

The party kicks off on Friday,
June 4 from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m., and
Saturday and Sunday from noon
to 10 p.m. SAS Fest also puts on
two great events for its volunteers,
a pre-event party one week before
SAS Fest and a volunteer appreciation
party, about one month after
SAS Fest.
Every year, SAS Fest honors an
individual who has given to the
community to promote the art or
music industry. This year’s nominee
for the Lifetime Achievement
Award is La Prensa Newspaper
Publisher/CEO Tino Duran, who
has been a faithful supporter since
2004.
“He’s a great person,” said Tobias.
“He’s given so much of his
time and money to the city of San
Antonio and it’s time we give him
the recognition he deserves.”

SAN ANTONIO- A.B. Quintanilla’s
All Starz is no understatement
because an all-star ensemble participated
in “La Vida de Un Genio,” his
latest musical production.
His own All Starz are Jason “DJ
Kane” Cano, and Lee “JR” Gomez,
vocalists; Chris Perez, guitar; Gilbert
“Gipper El Animal” Nieto, accordion;
Robert “Bobbo” Gómez, keyboards;
Nick Banda, keyboards; Liz,
congas; and Joey Jiménez, drums.
However, the class-A list of international
all-stars which appeared
on different tunes in the most recent
compact disc includes José Feliciano,
Jon Secada, Gilberto Santa
Rosa, Marciano Cantero of Enanitos
Verdes, Shaila Dúrcal, Julio Ramos,
artistically known as Voltio, Jorge
Celedón, Alex Lora of El Tri, Albita,
Luis Enrique, Reyli Barba and other
surprise artists.
The coup d’état was made possible
by Luigi Gilrado, the group’s musical
arranger. Last but not least are the
remaining Dinos, Suzette Michelle

Quintanilla, Pete Astudillo, Ricky
Vela and Joe Ojeda, who are recording
and performing together for the
first time since 1995.
The All Starz arrived in San Antonio
straight from Chiapas, Mexico.
Before this trip, they performed in
Bogota, Bolivia and Medellin, Columbia.
But jet-lagged as they must
have felt during the sound check at
Sea World, they were still energetic
and in great spirits.
Backstage, AB, who wrote the
entire compact disc, explained, “I
dedicated this CD (“The Life of a Genius”)
to my dad, because my father
is a genius, and at the beginning, we
sometimes experienced hunger, but
he pulled us through this and many
other obstacles by pushing us to the
limit. And I’m glad Ricky (Vela) was
able to pull everyone together for this
project.”
When they appeared on the Cristina
Show on May 10th, Cristina
looked over at his father and said,

Discover the True Meaning of “Puro Gallo” at Gallista Gallery

SAN ANTONIO –The Gallista
Gallery, a staple in the Westside
community, is more than just a haven
for artists. Joe Lopez, artist, pioneer
and founder of the gallery on South
Flores, has created a symphony of
sights, sounds and color.
Gallista Gallery is not your typical
gallery. Even the name has significance
and a history. Lopez originally
wanted to use the name “Puro Gallo”,
but Gallo Wines sued. Ever a fighter,
Lopez trademarked “Gallista,” an
original moniker he created, while
fighting to use “Puro Gallo.” Lopez
won the knock-down drag-out fight
and now sports two trademarks: Puro
Gallo and Gallista Gallery.
The gallery itself is a space full
of little surprises. Several smaller
rooms off the main hall are used as
studio space, and some even as “minigalleries.”
From depictions of superheroes
to philosophical renderings,
the smaller rooms almost always
reflect the unique styles of the artists.
Most of the pieces in the front
room are created by Lopez and come
from things he relates to or simply
enjoys painting, such as gallos (or
roosters), street vendors, and pieces
that celebrate El Dia de Los Muertos
(Day of the Dead).
Although Lopez learned to paint
with only one hand, he never considered
it to be a handicap. His persistence
and strong will may have its
roots in the influence of his muses.
And Lopez had many muses. One
of his first sources of inspiration was
his Uncle Basillo, a house painter
and artist who made wooden folk
art carvings. Nationally acclaimed
artist, Jesse Trevino, who overcame
disability and learned to paint well
with just one hand, also played a very
important role in his life.
As a child, Lopez got a chance to
study art at the Witte Museum thanks
to an observant teacher, a nun who
spotted his talent. Lopez found his
passion, and later trained with Warren
Hunter and other well-known Texas
artists, such as Jesus “Chista” Cantu,
who introduced Lopez to Chicano art.
One of his prized paintings is
“El Corazon del Gallo,” or “Heart
of the Rooster.” The painting was
completed in about three days, but

the beauty that it emulates makes
an observer think that it took him
months to complete. That painting
is now for sale for $8,000.00.
Lopez runs a coffee shop in the
same space, and some changes are on
the way. A new intimate café called
Café Citlali will open June 12, along
with a new shop that sells prints, cards
featuring his art, and other “Gallo”
merchandise (T-shirts, and caps).
Lopez has been running the Gallista
Gallery for about 12 years
now, and hopes to spend more time
working on his art. He’s looking for
someone that would assume his role
and continue to mentor local artist
just starting out. He will sell Gallista
Gallery to the right candidate.
Gallista Gallery is open 9 a.m. to
5 p.m, Wednesday thru Friday., and
8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday.

“Abraham, it’s hard to see if you are
happy or proud because you always
have the same stern face.” But off
camera, around family and close
friends, Abraham smiles, laughs and
his face glows with love and pride for
his kids and grandchildren.
AB’s pride in his family and his
love for his late sister, Selena, is overt
because it is tattooed all over his
body. His right forearm alone bears a
beautiful tattoo of Selena surrounded
by roses and the song title, “Cómo
La Flor.”
From the opening notes, “Hipnótika”
mesmerizes the listener with a
James Bond-like intro, followed by
a creative mix of vocals by DJ Kane,
Marciano and Voltio’s rap. During
live performances, AB and JR fill in
for the two guest artists.
The same applies to “Naci Para
Sufrir,” a haunting international ballad
with a taste of mariachi featuring
Feliciano and Astudillo. Again, JR
fills for Feliciano at each gig.
While the Capitol Latin CD is
being described conceptually to be
similar to Santana’s “Supernatural”
album because of the number of guest
artists, A.B. told Billboard’s Ayala
Ben-Yehuda, “It’s cumbia villera, but
on steroids.” By this he was referring
to a mid-tempo, synth-heavy street
style with a nearly reggae beat.
“I was able to take what they’re doing
with scratchy, raw loops and put
electrónica on top of it and layer that
with tropical brass and the A.B. Quintanilla
flavor. And just went to town
on the singers alone . . . it’s eclectic,
weird, down to Jorge Celedón singing
with El Tri on ‘Dia de Los Muertos’
with the harmonica playing on a
cumbia -- it’s the weirdest, coolest
thing you’ll ever hear,” said A.B.
The album is scheduled to go on
sale, here and in Mexico, May 18th.
However, fans heard a preview of
some tunes during the All Starz’
Sea World concert. AB stayed at the
Hyatt Regency Hill Country Resort
in the Alamo City until Monday, in
order to do an exclusive early morning
interview with Jonny Ramírez at
KXTN, Tejano 107. That same night
everyone appeared on the Cristina
Show.
Following the initial release, Capitol
Latin is considering an August release
in Columbia, Argentina, Chile,
Spain and even Japan. Meanwhile,
the record label will have AB on an
extensive, grueling, promotional tour
of radio stations, television programs,
meet-and-greets and acoustic sets at
Wal Marts all over the United States.

The American
Dream
Webster defines The American Dream as, “prosperity achieved through
hard work, courage, and determination.” Although this holds true, as the
economy continues to change, The American Dream is revised on a daily
basis by our society.
At one point in time, The American Dream used to be a level that was
achieved through self-sacrifice and dedication. Any monies that were
earned were deserved. Nowadays, even those that don’t work hard can earn
The American Dream.
Since get-rich-quick schemes and the lottery have made their presence
in the United States, people assume that they can earn money with little
to no effort.
The 19th and 20th century have brought about a dramatic change in the
way our dreams come true. Success, fame, and wealth could all become real,
without work ethic, whereas before, work ethic brought your dreams to life.
It is important to understand that The American Dream can differ from
person to person.
For John Winthrop, The American Dream was achieving a “religious
utopia,” a place called the City on the Hill where all citizens could live and
peacefully share the same beliefs.
For Martin Luther King, Jr., The American Dream was achieving racial
equality. It was being able to get on a bus or drink water and shop as every
other person, regardless of the color of your skin.
For someone who comes from a low-income family, their American
Dream may be attaining a college education, while someone who resides
in wealth may want to build an empire as their American Dream.
Although we can attempt to define this goal, we will never be able to. It
is constantly changing and always perceived differently by each individual.
If one had to pinpoint a constant throughout history, it would be the idea of
money. Everyone wants money. No one wants to live in poverty. Whereas
in centuries before, money was hard earned, money has now become a bit
easier to attain.
The American Dream (now) is having lots of money, a big house, and
money for family generations to come. Aside from that, The American
Dream is also comprised of loving your work. It is no longer accepted to
be in a workplace where you are not happy. If this is the case, you still are
on the outside of achieving the complete dream.
Education has also become a huge part of The American Dream. Back in
the day, women stayed at home and took care of the house and kids. That
was their place while the men were at work making money to support the
family.
Today, it is rare to see women at home. Today women are getting an
education and raising a family at the same time.
Many men are waiting until after high school before entering the workforce,
that way they can focus on achieving a degree. This would not have
been accepted some hundred years ago, but we are shaping and molding
The American Dream every day.
The American Dream is ever-changing. There is no real definition and
there will never be one.
To say that my American Dream is the same as the person standing next
to me would be wrong. Although we may be striving to attain the same
goals, there will always be something that sets our dreams a part.

Lo que pasa es que no te has hecho respetar, mi amor. ¿Cómo permites
que te eche de su departamento? Que juegue con tus sentimientos, ¿Qué
haces ahí? Deja que te busque, pero no le des importancia. Hazte valer. Tu
eres una persona que no mereces un hombre así, aléjate, cambia el rumbo
de tu vida. Si el muchacho sabe que estas a su disposición cuando él quiere,
seguirá chantajeándote.

Estoy en medio de una relación muy desgastante, soy pareja de mi
novio desde hace 2 años, y al principio todo era color de rosa, el se
portaba divino, caballeroso, yo pensé que me había sacado la lotería
con él, pero al pasar el tiempo me di cuenta que tenía dos caras, que
todo lo que aparentaba y decía ser, era mentira. Ha llegado al grado
que ya no puedo ser yo, sé que es increíble, que es absurdo pensar que
una persona debe decirte cómo actuar, que gustos tener, que pensar,
sin embargo no sé como permití que el provocara estos cambios en mi.

Cuando una persona te ama, jamás pretende que seas otra persona, es decir,
el te conoció como tú eres, y no se vale que quiera cambiarte a su forma de
ser y de pensar. Recupera tu identidad. Sé que estas dentro de una relación
en la que tal vez ya te acostumbraste, pero tienes que ver qué es lo mejor
para ti, lo que te haga feliz. Una relación sentimental es para compartir tus
ideas, tus gustos, si estas con alguien es por que deseas complementarte con
esa persona, contrario a lo que está pasando en tu relación. Supongo que ya
lo hablaste con él y que tal vez el siga en su postura de querer controlarte
y lo que es peor, tu individualidad. Sal de esa relación sin pensarlo, tienes
una vida por delante, seguro encontraras a alguien afín a tu personalidad,
y que respete tu forma de ser. No es fácil encontrar a alguien compatible,
pero si existe, ponte alerta en tu próxima relación. Y recuerda cualquiera
que pretenda cambiar tu esencia como persona, no merece siquiera que le
prestes atención. Suerte y que Dios te bendiga.
