Driving around the Westside
of San Antonio is stressful for
any animal lover. In a city where
animal welfare is well organized,
folks can turn in dogs without a
problem –but that’s not the case
here in San Antonio.
The problem of stray dogs is
indeed frustrating, and unfortunately
most people feel there is
little they can do to help.
It is estimated that as many as
100,000 stray dogs wander the
streets of San Antonio. Some
are pets, some are former pets
and some have never been pets
at all.
Animal control is a tricky
problem. The need to euthanize
animals due to overcrowding
in shelters is disheartening for
those who work in animal shelters.
It’s because of this that
the city plans to create a no-kill
policy in its shelters which will
take effect in 2012.
About six to eight million
dogs and cats are sent to animal
shelters each year –about half

“Nunca pensé que sería capaz
de realizar ciertas cosas en mi
vida, y una de ellas era separarme
de mi celular, y por ¡tres días!
Ser una big sister (gran hermana)
me cambió la vida y pensar que
era yo la que iba a compartir mi
conocimiento y experiencia con
Ruthie, mi little sister (pequeña
hermana), y ahora tengo grandes
experiencias a su lado”, expresó
Vanessa.
Ruthie y Vanessa han estado
“vinculadas” desde hace 14 meses,
tiempo durante el cual han experimentado
diversas actividades.
“Nuestro viaje de acampar con
BBBS (Big Brothers and Big Sisters)
me ha permitido hacer cosas
fuera de lo común, por ejemplo,
mi little sister me despertaba muy
temprano para disfrutar del día y
emprender una nueva aventura;
eso incluía desde tomar juntas el
desayuno, ir de excursión, hasta
saltar de un acantilado al río”,
comentó la big sister.
La inocencia de Ruthie, le
permitió darse cuenta de que
todavía hay “niños buenos” y su
fortaleza la ha impulsado a vivir
al máximo y alcanzar sus metas.
“Soy muy afortunada de tener una
little sister como Ruthie. Ella es
una niña de apenas diez años con
un corazón de oro. A menudo se
me derrite el corazón cuando la
escucho hablar de otros niños”,
manifestó Vanessa.
Al igual que Vanessa, existen
muchos big brothers y big sisters,
quienes la mayoría de las veces no
saben la importancia de su labor
con los niños, la huella que dejan
en el corazón de los littles queda
para siempre, la convivencia y
las enseñanzas, hacen una gran
diferencia en sus vidas.

Spectators watching the Battle
of Flowers Parade wind its way
through downtown San Antonio this
year will witness a new participate.
Traditionally, the end of the Battle
of Flowers was confirmed by street
sweepers collecting the nearly 20
tons of garbage left behind in the
parade’s wake. This year, however,
once the last float has passed a recycling
truck will make its way down
the parade route, stopping at 10 “eco
stations” along the way, picking up
recyclables such as bottles, plastic
and aluminum.
The parade will be one of dozens
of Fiesta events that will, for the
first time ever, provide clearly designated
recycling areas, according
to an announcement made by San
Antonio mayor Julian Castro earlier
this week.
“I’m excited that the time for
Green Fiesta has finally come,”
Castro told La Prensa Newspaper.
“From this point forward, recycling
and sustainability will be integrated

into the celebration of our city’s
traditions and history.”
Castro first spoke with Fiesta
planners last August, encouraging
them to “think green,” said Fiesta
San Antonio Commission’s public
relations manager Anne Cannon.
The committee originally discussed
more ambitious measures,
such as solar-powered stages, but
time restraints and funding challenges
led planners to choose a
more limited approach to reducing
Fiesta’s carbon footprint.
“We had to narrow our focus so
that we would have an impact,”
said Cannon. “Recycling would
have a real impact. It’s visible; it’s
a first step.”
While participation in Fiesta’s
recycling program or “Fiesta Verde”
was not mandatory this year, that
may change in the future. The city
passed an ordinance Thursday
requiring events with over 1000
participants to obtain “green event
certification.”
Using a “green event scorecard,”
organizers will be able to earn
points for environmentally friendly
measures like “providing recycling
opportunities and utilizing two-sided
printing for promotional items.” If
they fail to garner enough points
to meet minimum requirements,
organizers will have the option of
buying the points by contributing
to the city’s local environmental
activities funds.
In the meantime, revelers can look
forward to seeing recycling stations
at Fiesta mainstays like the Flambeaux
Parade, the King William’s
Fair, Fiesta Del Niños, Earth Day,
the All Veterans Memorial Service,
the Fiesta Arts Fair and Night in Old
San Antonio.
Fiesta planners stress that for
recyclables to avoid the landfill they
must be deposited in designated
recycling bins. Also, steer clear of
paper cups, because they will not
be recycled.
“The big objective is education,”
said Cannon. “We want people to
understand what is recyclable and
what is not, and that it’s easy. If a
big Fiesta event can recycle then we
want to show that anyone can do it
and you can do it at home.”

El ser un big brother o big
sister representa una amistad
con su hijo o hija que les ayuda
a alcanzar metas personales, así
como métodos de cómo resolver
problemas, ayuda a mejorar la
comunicación con otros y aporta
ideas positivas de cómo tomar
buenas decisiones en su vida.
BBBS exhorta a los voluntarios
a que vean a sus little brothers o
little sisters una vez por semana o
mínimo cada quince días.

just can’t afford their animals
anymore.”
McCoy added that every shelter
in San Antonio is trying to
come up with something that
can help people keep their animals.
“We want the community
to get educated by spaying and
neutering, microchipping them
and investing time and some
money into their animal to make
sure they stay healthy and they
don’t have to spend money medically.”
The San Antonio Humane So-

El mejor secreto
Fui a cenar con Isabel, una amiga
periodista a quien no veía hace
tiempo. Durante la cena hablamos
de hombres, moda, trabajo
y cuando llegamos al tema de las
metas, me dijo: “Te voy a revelar
el verdadero secreto para realizar
cualquier sueño. Te vas a acordar
de mí por el resto de tu vida”. A
lo que respondí: “¿Acaso me vas a
hablar de la ley de la atracción?”.
Y me explicó: “Se relaciona con
esta ley, pero va mucho más allá
porque es una práctica que tiene
que ver con sexo”. Lo que Isabel
reveló me impactó de tal forma
que ahora quiero compartirlo
contigo.
Antes de explicártelo, repasemos
el principio de la ley de la
atracción, la cual establece que

Marihuana es la hierba controversial
por la que algunos grupos
han logrado que sea legalizada
como medicamento en 13 estados
de la Nación, incluyendo a
California en donde la presión fue
más intensa.
Para obtenerla legalmente, el
Médico les da una tarjeta por el
tiempo que deben usarla, tres,
seis meses, o un año. La cuestión
aquí, es que no se menciona, que
yo recuerde, la forma en que la
marihuana sería aplicada como
medicamento.
Para mi el consumo de la marihuana
es un detrimento para la
salud y si no, que lo digan los
científicos del Departamento de
Salubridad Pública de los Estados
Unidos, que siguen considerando
ilegal el uso de la marihuana
aunque ya los hayan derrotado en
13 Estados.
La marihuana, señores, podrá
tener efectos medicinales, pero
es una droga adictiva, una vez
que alguien comienza a fumarla
jamás podrá librarse de ella. Recuerdo
que durante mi adolescencia
conocí a algunas personas que
eran respetuosos, considerados y
de buen carácter, pero cambiaba
totalmente su personalidad debido
al consumo de la marihuana.
La marihuana, digan lo que
digan sus promotores. No solo
afecta el carácter, también produce
efectos dañinos al cerebro y
produce un aroma bastante fuerte
e inconfundible. No se si vieron
ustedes unas tres películas cómicas
de Cheech and Chong que a pesar
de ser cómicas promovían el uso
de la marihuana.
La marihuana también produce
chispas muy volátiles que pueden
ocasionar incendios, quemar la
ropa o muebles y hasta ocasionar
accidentes mientras se fuma manejando.
Aún recuerdo cuando trabajaba
en la radio y la televisión, un
grupo juvenil de rock me pidió que
asistiera al Auditorio Municipal
de San Antonio para verlos actuar
en un concurso de bandas y luego
darles mi opinión.
Cuando llegué estaba aquello
a reventar, no cabía ni un alfiler,
la gran mayoría eran chamacos
y adolescentes, incluyendo a los
grupos que concursaban.
Había una tremenda algarabía
de parte de la concurrencia. Me
acomodé en donde se pudo, pero
al poco rato me levanté para buscar
otro asiento porque a mi alrededor
la mayoría de jóvenes, algunos
menores de edad, estaban fumando
marihuana.
No encontré ningún otro lugar
en el cual no estuvieran fumando
Fui hacia los pasillos de atrás para
llamar la atención de 4 o 5 policías
que ahí se encontraban para cuidar
el orden, pero sorpresivamente
anhelas. Esta declaración me dejó
boquiabierta. Pensé: “Hace mucho
sentido, pues lo que nos impide
conseguir lo que deseamos son
nuestras dudas y temores”.
Tal vez piensas que no es posible
imaginar tus sueños mientras
alcanzas el clímax. Pero según Isabel,
tienes que tratarlo para darte
cuenta que sí se puede porque en
el momento del orgasmo, el sexo
deja de ser físico y trasciende al
plano espiritual donde experimentamos
felicidad absoluta.

me dijeron que no podían hacer
nada porque se armaría una gran
revolución que no habrían podido
contener por falta de refuerzos.
El hecho es que tanto chamacos
como adolescentes, incluyendo
adultos, fuman la hierba y tienen
una adicción incontenible. Se
comienza con cigarrillos; yo lo
hice cuando niño, imitando a mis
compañeros de escuela, como
adulto, no tuve nunca fuerte adicción
puesto que una cajetilla me
duraba una semana y paré de
fumar cigarrillos cuando se me
vino en gana, mas nunca probé
marihuana.
El problema es que se comienza
con cigarrillos, se sigue con marihuana,
y luego continúan con
drogas. Tratemos de evitar que
nuestros niños caigan en las garras
del vicio vigilando o supervisando
la clase de amistades que tienen,
porque de niño, se tiene la tendencia
de imitar a los compañeros.
La marihuana, los gringos la h la
pronuncian como J, y la escriben
como marijuana.
Respeto la opinión de los médicos
que están de acuerdo en recetarla,
pero yo tengo mi propia
opinión, así que digan lo que digan,
aunque digan Misa, Marihuana
es una droga A-DIC-TIVA!!!

De clic a clic, el internet
resquebraja las dictaduras
Cada vez hay menos gente que
lee los diarios para saber qué está
pasando en el mundo. La mayoría
se ha mudado a la Internet. Es mala
noticia para los periódicos impresos.
La buena noticia es que la Red
de la Internet se ha convertido en
la mejor arma que hay contra las
dictaduras.
El 2008 fue el primer año en que
más personas utilizaron la Internet,
en lugar de los periódicos, para informarse
sobre noticias nacionales
e internacionales, según un estudio
del Pew Research Center. Un 40 por
ciento prefirió usar la Internet para
conseguir las noticias comparadas
con el 35 por ciento que prefirió
leer los diarios en papel. Y desde ahí
todo parece ser cuesta abajo.
Entre los jóvenes el asunto es
mucho más notable. El número de
menores de 29 años de edad que lee
las noticias en la Internet es más que
el doble que el que todavía lo hace
en periódicos. Y yo lo estoy viendo
en mi casa. Mi hija y yo leemos

mañanas; yo lo hago en papel y ella
en su computadora.
Me apena decirlo porque esta columna
se publica, primariamente, en
diarios que generosamente me han
abierto su espacio por años. Pero

Lo positivo de este cambio tan
espectacular en tan poco tiempo
es que la Internet está ayudando a
resquebrajar, de clic a clic, los gobiernos
más autoritarios y represivos
del mundo.
Dos dictaduras, China y Cuba,
están haciendo todo lo posible para
evitar que sus ciudadanos tengan acceso
libre a la Internet. El gobierno
chino lleva meses peleando con la
empresa Google porque quiere que
censure su contenido y prohíba
búsquedas de, por ejemplo, la
masacre de Tiananmen. Pero en
Hong Kong se puede leer todo sin
censura. Esa lucha la perderá, tarde
o temprano, el régimen chino.
En Cuba, la dictadura de los hermanos
Castro ha logrado limitar el
acceso de la población a la Internet.
Pero los cubanos son unos magos
para “resolver” las cosas. Uno me
contaba hace poco que escondía el
prohibido plato de satélite y la conexión
a la Internet en lo que parecía
ser, por fuera, un tinaco de agua. Y
así veía todo.
“La Internet va a ayudar muchísimo”
a cambiar a Cuba, me dijo hace
poco el actor cubano Andy García.
“Los disidentes por fin tienen una
posibilidad de contar su historia”.

starts before we are born. For an
infant to speak or walk, he first has
to learn by watching and listening to

for instance, may not be able to
communicate as well as others, but
if they are shown by example, they
are quick to learn.
A college education is a great
thing and in todays job market it
is essential in many fields of employment.
Unfortunately, there are
many college graduates that lose
jobs in their chosen professions
and for some reason, feel that they
cannot do anything else. They find
themselves collecting unemployment
until it runs out and in extreme
cases, wind up homeless, collecting
welfare.
Some would rather be in that situation
than settle for a job they feel is
beneath them.
For example, almost any ablebodied
man or woman can cut grass,
wash cars, wash dishes, deliver papers,
run errands or perform countless
other types of honest work.
There is honor in the sweat of
the brow and there is a classified
section in the newspaper full of job
openings. Even though it may not
be the job you had in mind or the
job you want, it beats standing on
a corner or a highway exit ramp
holding a small cardboard sign with
both hands.
I believe that any honest job is
better than unemployment and that
people should never think that an
honest job is beneath them.
I am a disabled person that hardly
anyone would consider hiring. I
could stand out somewhere asking
for money. Instead, every day I go
out in search of some honest work.
Since I am a notary public, I
advertise with a sign on my fence,
signs on the door panels of my car
and a sign across the front of my
walker—the one that goes with me
everywhere I go.
There is always something that

cada habitante del planeta. Y los
nuevos celulares son verdaderas
minicomputadoras con acceso a
la Internet, correo electrónico y
capaces de filmar, entre muchas
otras monerías.
Los recientes disturbios en Irán
fueron captados y transmitidos al
mundo por celulares de los opositores
al régimen iraní. Cuando un
avión de US Airways acuatizó en el
río Hudson a un lado de la ciudad de
Nueva York, las primeras imágenes
fueron enviadas por el celular de
Janus Krums, un joven que no era
periodista pero que se encontraba
cerca del lugar del accidente.
La desaparición paulatina de
los diarios tiene, al menos, un buen
consuelo. La libertad por la que los
diarios lucharon durante siglos en
papel es una realidad en los etéreos
medios que los reemplazan.
Viva la Internet. También el
celular. Representan la libertad.

Sometimes you have to take a
short course or retrain in order to
meet the changing requirements in
the job market. Be creative, expand
your horizons, and learn things outside
your chosen profession. You
never know when you may need to
use it to earn an honest living.
With Easter behind us, I think of
the greatest teacher that ever lived.
He taught by word, but more than
that, he also taught by example.

De acá de este lado… celebraremos en verde

Tengo que confesarles que después
de la primera vez que tuve la oportunidad
de estar en San Antonio durante
la semana de FIESTA, he tenido
los más encontrados sentimientos
en relación a dicha celebración. Por
un lado, la parte histórica…pero
no hablaré de eso en esta ocasión.
Permítanme esta vez compartirles
algunos otros pensamientos.
La primera vez (que fue la última)
que asistí a NIOSA, sentí estar a
punto de ahogarme entre la multitud,
hecho que considero un verdadero
record para alguien que vivió en la
ciudad mas poblada del mundo, y
que aún recuerda el ir ‘colgada’ en
algún autobús urbano, así como los
famosos ‘apachurrones’ del Metro.
Por otra parte, me fascina el ambiente
que se vive en San Antonio,
reflejado en su famoso desfile,
evento en el que prácticamente todos
los estratos de esta la comunidad,
tanto horizontal como verticalmente,
se dan cita. En el caso de las bandas
escolares, finalmente las numerosas
horas de práctica, tienen su momento
de gloria bajo los reflectores, que en
el caso de nuestra ciudad, es generalmente
un bello día soleado, aunque
a veces a dicho reflector ‘se le pasa
la mano’.
Y que me dicen del fenómeno
de la ‘realeza’ de San Antonio,
cuyo efímero reinado, no opaca el
entusiasmo e interés que genera año
con año. Supongo que es algo así
como las flores de primavera que
esperamos ansiosamente ver, y que
aunque rápidamente desaparezcan,
no las olvidamos.
En el caso de dichas reinas, princesas,
duquesas etc., que no solamente
son el resultado del clásico certamen
de belleza, pero también son las
portadoras de esas verdaderas obras
de arte que son los atavíos reales.
Aunque en los últimos años, dentro
de la pompa arcaica de la realeza,
algunas jóvenes combinan las vestiduras
de pedrería, con zapatos tenis
o flip-flops que orgullosamente,
y supongo que también, cómodamente,
muestran a la multitud.
De los contingentes que reciben
mas vítores y aplausos durante su
paso en el desfile, curiosamente,
es uno que ni viste pedrería, ni toca
instrumentos, y ni siquiera tiene un
bello uniforme; pero realiza una de
las actividades mas importantes en
un desfile; es el grupo que barre tras
el paso del cortejo.
Este año, nuestro nuevo alcalde,
Julián Castro, ha declarado que
San Antonio quiere una FIESTA
“VERDE”. Esto, desde luego no
tiene nada que ver con la pasada
celebración de San Patricio; ni tampoco
con el color como tal. Aunque
habiendo crecido con poesías a una
bandera que porta el color verde,
puedo recordar el verso de: “Es el
verde la esperanza…” Y ciertamente
que es el ‘verde’ la esperanza, y no
únicamente para esta celebración,
sino para toda nuestra comunidad;
para todo nuestro planeta; para
cualesquiera que sea nuestro futuro…
Es cierto que tratar de ser ‘verde’
no es fácil. Yo misma, quien frecuentemente
soy acusada de exagerada
en el terreno de conservar
y reciclar, tengo que confesar que
cuando fue mi turno escoger entre
usar panales desechables o no, decidí
justificarme pensando que los
panales también se reciclan. Efectivamente,
como habitantes de este
planeta, nuestra actitud ha dejado
mucho que desear.
Como se ha dicho; nosotros no
somos dueños de este mundo, únicamente
lo tenemos en préstamo, con
la condición de cuidarle, pues es el
legado de futuras generaciones.
Ojalá que el ejemplo de una FIES-
TA ‘VERDE’ persista en todos nosotros,
y nos permita seguir cuidando
el legado de nuevas generaciones
que probablemente contemplarán un
desfile (¿con carros espaciales?) y en
los numerosos puestos de antojitos y
otras cosas, no produciremos toneladas
de basura, y la que se produzca,
será reciclada en su mayoría y…
En fin, soñar no cuesta nada, y el
futuro nace de los sueños.

the United States in general,
but judging from what I’ve seen
and from what I know, there
is definitely a large number of
Maya from Totonicapán in the
United States. From my hamlet
alone, between 500 and 1,000
of our neighbors are currently
living in the United States, and
there are about 48 cantons in the
Department of Totonicapán. So
we’re talking about as many as
50,000 indigenous people, from
Totonicapán alone, who are
there in the United States: if not
in Houston, then spread out all
over the country.”
If José’s figures are correct,
then the Quiché-Mayan exile
community from the Department
of Totonicapán residing in the
United States equates to as much
as 15% of the entire population
of the region itself.
In 1999, José attempted to

Mexican nationality, and immigration
allowed him a temporary
respite with a court date
in Houston to make his case for
asylum. Once in Houston, his
ultimate destination, his lawyers
advised him not to apply for
asylum, since the standard of a
well-founded fear of persecution
or torture would be impossible
for him to satisfy.
Unlike the first generation of
Guatemalan-Mayan immigrants
to the United States, those who
came during the Guatemalan
Civil War, a prolonged conflict
between the national army and
guerilla insurrectionists—from
1960 until the U.N.-brokered
peace agreements of 1996—José’s
reasons for immigrating had
more to do with economics than
politics. “Make an honest living,
stay out of trouble, and go
back when you can,” his lawyers
told him.
José is presently 44 years old
and his wife, Susana, 34. He
has a 15 year-old-son from a
prior marriage, a little girl of
5 and a little boy of 4. He had
nothing in Guatemala when he
left his country: no house, no
land. He returned to Guatemala
in 2007, having not only provided
for the daily needs of his
family, but having financed the
construction of a humble home
on the outskirts of the City of
Totonicapán.
How did he accomplish this?
By working day and night
at odd jobs: landscaping, dishwashing,
warehousing: anything
to make a buck. While he saved
his money, paid his debt to the
“coyote,” sent his wife and children
remittances, sent money for
the purchase of a small lot and
a humble home, and paid for his
daily expenses, including canned
goods and the like, some of his
indigenous compatriots spent
their earnings on beer, cigarettes,
drugs and sex—drowning in
their sorrows.
Why had he gone to Houston?
For historical reasons—as
anthropologist Jacqueline María
Hagan describes in her book,
Deciding to be Legal: A Maya
Community in Houston:
“One cold winter in 1978,

to his wife and his two
children and walked alone down

thousand other Maya from his
hometown of San Pedro were to
follow in his footsteps into the
next decade.
“After three months in the
city, Juan met another Maya, a
man from El Quiché, a department
neighboring his native
Department of Totonicapán in
the Guatemalan highlands. Several
weeks later, his new friend
had found him a better-paying
job as a maintenance worker
in the retail supermarket chain
where he worked. Shortly after
landing this job, Juan moved in
with eight other undocumented
coworkers in a crowded, onebedroom
apartment located in
the southwest part of the city…
“…It was not long before
news of higher wages and economic
opportunity in Houston
reached San Pedro. Juan began
receiving letters from kin and
friends, asking him to find them
work in Houston. According
to Juan, it was not uncommon
for him to receive three of four
such letters in a day. The social
foundation for Maya migration
from San Pedro to Houston had
been laid.”

Sea turtles fill virtually
every niche
in the marine environment
– from the
beaches where they
nest to coral reefs,
sea grass beds and
the open ocean. Sea
turtles depend on
and enrich all these
habitats. By saving
them, we can protect
the ecosystems that
enable all life in the oceans to
survive.
“I think of sea turtles as the
ambassadors of the sea,” said
David Godfrey, executive director
of Caribbean Conservation
Corporation. “Whether sea
turtles vanish from the planet
or remain a wild and thriving
part of the natural world will
speak volumes about the health
of the planet and mankind’s
ability to coexist with the diversity
of life on Earth.”
Today, sea turtles face numerous
threats. Commercial
fishing activities kill thousands
each year. Beachfront development
permanently disturbs
their nesting habitat. Many
sea turtles die from eating or
becoming entangled in plastic
debris that litters the oceans.
Trash, particularly plastic
bags that end up in the sea, is
often mistaken as food by sea
turtles. Leatherbacks, the largest
of the world’s sea turtles,
are particularly susceptible to
confusing plastic bags with
jellyfish - the main component
of their diet.
The United States Environmental
Protection Agency
(EPA) reported in 2001 that
between 500 billion and one
trillion plastic bags are used
and discarded each year, millions
of which up in our environment.
How You Can Help:
Reduce your “plastic footprint”
by boycotting plastic
bags in grocery stores and shopping
outlets. For one month, try
using only cloth bags or reuse
old plastic bags.
Participate in or organize a
trash clean-up project. Find a
local clean-up event by looking
online at the EPA’s website. If
you live near the coast, beach
clean-ups are a great way to
help maintain clean, safe nesting
sites for sea turtles.

Authority (BDA) as
one of twenty-four economic
development organizations in the
United States, as an “Accredited
Economic Development Organization
(AEDO).”

The presentation took place at
the Library of Congress in Washington,
DC during the Greater San
Antonio and Hispanic Chamber
of Commerce’s Annual San
Antonio to DC trip. “The Brooks
Development Authority displays
the professionalism, commitment,
and technical expertise that is
deserving of this honor,” said

Conference spotlights UT
Health Science Center students

Hundreds of students from The
University of Texas Health Science
Center at San Antonio devote
thousands of hours to serving their
community each year.
They have worked in free clinics
for the homeless and recovering
drug addicts, offered diabetes
screenings at local stores and run
a summer program that encourages
kids to make healthier choices,
among many other projects.
Their efforts were on display
Thursday, April 8, during the third
annual Community Service Learning
Conference, “Best Practices for
Putting Ethics into Action.” The
conference was held at 8 a.m. in the
Health Science Center auditorium.
The keynote address, “Narrative
Medicine & Reflection,” was delivered
by Craig Irvine, Ph.D., director
of education for the Program in
Narrative Medicine at Columbia
University’s College of Physicians
and Surgeons.
Later, students held a panel discussion
on top community service
learning projects. Poster presentations
from all projects were on
display throughout the conference.
Afterwards, students held their
annual “Night of the Arts” fundraiser,
which benefited student-run
free clinics at SAMMinistries’
Transitional Living and Learning

Conference is organized by the
Center for Medical Humanities &
Ethics at the UT Health Science
Center, which spearheads many of
the service learning opportunities
available to students. The Center
stresses the importance of “ethics
in action” in nurturing empathy and
humanitarian values in future doctors
and health professionals.
The Center for Medical Humanities
& Ethics’ efforts in community
service learning led to the UT
Health Science Center being named
to the 2009 President’s Higher
Education Community Service
Honor Roll. This distinction from
the Corporation for National and
Community Service recognizes the
role universities play in addressing
pressing social problems.
The honor roll covers the prior
academic year. In that year, the
Center for Medical Humanities &
Ethics reports that nearly 600 students
spent more than 8,000 hours
serving the community.
“We are so proud of the faculty
mentors and dedicated students
whose efforts have earned us
national recognition on the 2009
President’s Higher Education Community
Service Honor Roll,” said
Ruth Berggren, M.D., director of
South San Antonio ISD voters
will decide on a bond that includes
establishing a South San Antonio
Academy of Health Sciences.
The Academy will provide high
school students with a curriculum
of medically related sciences,
mathematics and health-related
subjects.
These courses are specifically
designed to allow admission into
colleges that offer medical training
certifications to train students
to fill the needs of the health care
industry.
The health care industry accounts
for over 17% of our nation’s
economy which means that nearly
20% of all money spent by Americans
goes toward health care.
Health care occupations are the
fastest growing professions in the
United States and the American
Medical Association (AMA) predicts
an explosion of medical workforce
opportunities in the future.
Educational programs in the
allied health professions and the
allied health workforce itself experience
a lack of sufficient representation
of Hispanic American
students, just as in other health
professions of medicine, nursing,
and dentistry.
Data demonstrates that this underrepresentation
is due to three
problem areas: (1) Students, families,
and teachers are often unaware
of career options in health professions.
(2) Coordination in programming,
student and family advisement
in health related training
programs is missing. (3) Because
of the numerous steps involved in
the pathway from high school to a
professional certificate and degrees,
many Hispanic students abandon
their career aspirations in the health
professions.
The Academy of Health Sciences
would provide academic
preparation needed for admission
and certification into these health
career programs with a rigorous
curriculum of medical sciences
and mathematics, and health career
courses in Anatomy and Physiology,
Microbiology, Pathophysiology
and other health related subjects.
Counselors and teachers provide
guidance and mentorship to guide
the Center for Medical Humanities
& Ethics. “That’s a first for
our Health Science Center, and I
believe that this honor is a harbinger
of good things to come for the
communities of San Antonio and
South Texas.”
Some of the service projects students
have participated in are:
•Two student groups offer diabetes
screening and education at
HEB and Walmart stores around
San Antonio.
•The Health Choices for Kids
program helps medical, nursing
and pre-professional students to
design and implement a summer
program that teaches adolescents
to make healthier choices. The summer
program is held in partnership
with Good Samaritan Community
Services on San Antonio’s West
Side.
•The Breastfeeding Education
and Support for Teenage Mothers
(BEST) program educates pregnant
teenagers and teenage mothers at
the Seton Home residential facility
on the benefits of breastfeeding and
helps support those who choose to
breastfeed their babies.
•The student-run free clinics at
SAMMinistries, Alpha Home and
Seton Home give medical students
and residents experience in primary
care medicine and public health
while providing free, compassionate
health care to vulnerable
populations.

project requires renovation and
equipping the facility with science
classrooms, a bio-science lab where
a student can practice medical
procedures on medical simulation
equipment, and a medical resource
library for student career exploration
and research.
When asking the South San
community for consideration of
the Academy of Health Sciences,
district officials considered the
proximity to area’s medical facilities
combined with the current and
future high demand for health care
professionals in the job market.

Block parties, bike-a-thons,
picnics and crawfish boils were
all part of this weekend’s Census
March to The Mailbox.
Cities and local community
groups staged awareness events
in neighborhoods and communities
across the country to urge
households to mail back their
2010 Census questionnaires.
In San Antonio, Census workers
and community leaders
lead block walkers to visit two
areas that have historically had
low mail-back rates of Census
forms.
The block walkers accompanied
a caravan of vehicles
decorated with Census March
to the Mailbox messages and
give away t-shirts, caps, fliers
and yard signs.
At 10 a.m. Saturday, April
10, the east side group met at
the Barbara Jordan Community
Center, 2803 E. Commerce St.
Sponsors of the event included
the San Antonio/Bexar
County Complete Count Commiteee,
the Mexican American
Unity Council, Southwest
Workers Union, University
of Texas San Antonio and the
Mexican American Legal Defense
Fund.
The effort is a final appeal
to get residents to complete the
10-question Census form and
mail it back so that everyone is
counted and that each community
gets its fair share of political
representation and federal
funding. Texas, Louisiana and
Mississippi have had among the
lowest 2010 Census participation
rates in the nation.
To help out, awareness events
are planned for every corner of
every state to promote Census
2010 participation, the final
publicity push before Census
workers are dispatched to the
field to knock on doors and
gather the information in person.
The 2010 Census has used
a wide-ranging multi-pronged
campaign to raise awareness
and participation of the 2010
Census to reduce the expense
of door-to-door canvassing by
Census enumerators, a costly
and time consuming operation.
While a Census form can be
returned by mail for less than
50 cents, it costs an average of
$57 for each household to send
workers to retrieve the information
in person. If 100 percent of
all households mailed back their
forms, taxpayers would save
about $1.5 billion.

Long live El Rey Feo

He’s spotted every year wandering
through social events,
visiting schools and raising
money during Fiesta in his
grandiose suits covered in
gold medals, proudly wearing
a colorful crown that could not
be missed.
San Antonio Royalty is like
no other: King Antonio, the
Queen of Soul, Miss Fiesta,
Reina de la Feria de las Flores,
dozens of duchesses and the
list goes on.
However, there is one royal
personality that the Alamo city
could not have Fiesta without:
El Rey Feo, also known as The
People’s King.
During his reign, El Rey Feo
and his court spend weeks visiting
nursing homes, hospitals,
orphanages, and over 60 elementary
schools encouraging
thousands of young students
to stay in school, respect their
teachers and parents, be good
citizens and challenging them
to pursue a higher education.
El Rey Feo translates to “The
Ugly King.” He is selected by
the local San Antonio League of
United Latin American Citizens
(LULAC) council for raising
the most amount of money for
the LULAC scholarship fund.
“You have to raise $175,
000,” said this year’s El Rey
Feo, Walter Serna. “We raised
$200,000; I say we because I’m
Rey Feo, but there were a lot
of people that helped me raise
that money, and every penny
goes to scholarships for high
school seniors who are headed
to college.”
Serna, one of San Antonio’s
most respected attorneys, is a
passionate father of two with
a strong desire to give back to
his city.
“My campaign and the scholarship
money raised are for the
people of San Antonio, from
the people of San Antonio,”
said Serna. “Every kind of
donation made, of any dollar
amount, will take us all one step
further in educating the leaders
of tomorrow.”
Serna operates a thriving
general practice law office in
partnership with his brother,
Cesar Serna. The practice, now
in its twenty-first year, focuses
on civil and criminal litigation
and the representation of clients
before municipalities and governmental
bodies.
“I’m living proof of education,”
mentioned Serna. “I am
where I am because I went to
school –I’m a first generation
college graduate and come
from an average-middle income
family. My parents worked
very hard to get me where I am
today.”
El Rey Feo is the 62nd king;
therefore, their goal was to
visit 62 schools throughout the
region 20 community of San
Antonio. “It looks as though
we’re going to do 70 schools,”
said David Christian, an attorney
and executive minister for
El Rey Feo. “We need to tell
kids that education is golden,
it’s power –that’s why we wear
all the gold.”
While children wait anxiously
for his grand arrival,
El Rey Feo begins to prepare
for his royal entrance: Miley
Cyrus’ “Party in the U.S.A.”
plays in the background. Anxious
whispers quickly escalate
into screams of excitement, as
though they’re soon to be in the
actual presence of Miley Cyrus
herself.
“It makes a great impact on
these kids,” said Serna. “They
see me walking in with all these
medals and my crown –they’re
ready to hear whatever I have
to say.”
One of the court members
begins telling a story of the
lost golden coin. The children
soon realize that the coin can
be found in school by going to
class, studying and doing their
homework. At the end of the
story, each student is awarded
with a “golden” coin as a reminder
of the importance of
education.
Students are getting the message
loud and clear. “The feedback
is amazing,” added Serna.
“A few days ago a kid came
up to me and said, ‘I’m going
to college for you’ –that’s the
kind of impact you have on
these kids.”
El Rey Feo’s program has
become a non-profit organization,
raising over three million
dollars for scholarships given
to over 3,000 students with 100
students presently receiving
$1,500 for books and tuition.
To qualify, students must have
a 2.5 GPA, and if selected,
they’re awarded $1,500 a year
for every year that they stay in
college, up to four years and
$6,000.
The story of El Rey Feo
dates back to Spanish medieval
times. The King of Spain
decided he wanted to fill his
court with only the beautiful,
rich, and aristocratic –ordinary
citizens were never invited
to the palace and rarely saw
the monarch. The king was
resented for this, and one day
a rebellious crowd gathered in
the plaza and proclaimed one of
their own as “The Ugly King”
or “The People’s King.”
It was in Aguascalientes,
Mexico during La Feria De
San Marcos (The Festival of
St. Mark) when the first Rey
Feo was crowned in North
America.
In 1947, members of the
LULAC Council No. 2 in San
Antonio, Texas were looking
for a way to raise money to
provide scholarships for underprivileged
and deserving
San Antonio youth. With their
knowledge of La Feria de San
Marcos, The LULAC members
decided that sponsoring a Rey
Feo Competition of their own
would not only be fun, but
charitable as well.
El Rey Feo merits Royalty
status and is invited along
with the other Fiesta Royalty,
including the LULAC Feria
De Las Flores Queen who also
raises scholarship funds, to
ride in all of the four major
Fiesta parades as part of the
spectacular annual, 10-day Fiesta
festival held every year in
April, in honor of the the heroes
of the Alamo and the Battle of
San Jacinto.
This year AT&T is supporting
El Rey Feo more than ever.
“We’ve always been supportive,
but this year we’ve had a long
relationship and have known
Walter Serna,” explained Leo
Gomez, AT&T vice president
of communications and public
affairs. “We believe in what he
is trying to accomplish and the
message he is trying to spread,
and that’s why we’re supporting
him. We hope to be able to
continue that but Walter has
certainly brought us together.”
“The message is simple,
study, stay in school, go beyond
high school and get a degree,”
added Gomez. “That’s a message
we need to spread throughout
all our schools. It’s something
that the Spurs have been
praised for a long time –going
to schools where the message
needs to be heard is something
that we truly support.”
Fiesta is more than just sausages
on a stick, turkey legs
or running around having fun
collecting beer cups, it has a
deeper and greater meaning.
“It’s a proclamation, a celebration
of what’s been worked
on all year long and that’s scholarships
and getting the message
out that we want you to go to
college, encouraging students
to apply for those scholarships
and striving for a college education,”
said Gomez.
Show support this year by
wearing your river parade medal
and teaching your little ones
the value of an education.
“You might have fancy cars,
you might have nice clothes
but if you don’t have education,
you don’t have anything,”
concluded Serna. “Education is
the most precious thing you’ll
have.”

said McCoy. “We’re trying to do
everything we can to help solve
this problem to where people
don’t have to turn in their dog.”
Now there’s a different and
more forceful approach to persuade
people to adopt dogs from
shelters. It’s a website called
dogsindanger.com.
The site publicizes how many
times animals are euthanized if
they do not find a home. There
is also a counter in the corner
which states how many dogs
have been killed in the time visitors
have been on the website.
The people behind dogsindanger.com
believe their website is
the first to take this kind of more
direct approach. They hope that
focusing on the fact that many of
the dogs that don’t find homes
will be euthanized will influence
people to adopt them.
On the website, there is a
memorial with names, photos
and dates that euthanized dogs
died.
“This is happening in our
country, in our backyard,” said
Alex Aliksanyan of The Buddy
Fund, the group behind the website.
“It’s been kept underneath
a blanket of niceness and sweetness.
So we said, ‘Let’s put the
truth in front of the consumer
–either do something about
it, or at least realize you’re a
partner.’”
He also added that dogsindanger.com
is not a place that
parents should look for dogs
with their children. “It’s not a
happy site with puppies running
around. It’s not meant to be
that,” he stated. “We’re taking
it the other way around. We’re
saying these pets are going to
die. Look at their faces.”
In honor of these lonely fourlegged
creatures, the Guadalupe
Art Gallery hosted “Perros y
Palabras: Spoken Word Night,”
on Thursday evening. Students
of all ages shared poetry focusing
on the theme of pets and stray
animals in the Westside of San
Antonio.
The student poetry was inspired
by the exhibit currently
showing, “Operation Canis Familiaris.”
The exhibit, which features
the work of the Mas Rudas
Collective, a group of five local
artists, focuses on the issue of
stray animals in San Antonio.
“It’s really sad,” said Jeremiah
Valles, who recited a poem about
his late dog, Chicobibi. “San
Antonio is growing but so is the
stray dog population. We have
a lot of them on the Westside
and the people here just can’t
keep them.” For more information

insulin dependent because
the beta-cells, cells that
make insulin are destroyed

longer produce enough insulin
in combination with oral
medications to keep blood
glucose normal. Patients
do not become “addicted”
to insulin. Patients may be
able to stop insulin if new
medications are developed,

more signings by the reigning
Premier League champions this
summer.
United wasted no time in announcing
their newest recruit
following Wednesday night’s
shattering Champions League
exit against Bayern Munich,
confirming Mexico striker Javier
Hernandez will join them in
July, providing they can secure
a work permit for the 21-yearold.
Hernandez joins Fulham defender
Chris Smalling, whose
transfer was agreed in January
and will also become a member
of the Red Devils’ squad during
the summer. However, these are
not the marquee names United
fans are demanding.
There have been fresh rumours
of a bid for Karim Benzema,
who snubbed United
in favour of Real Madrid last
summer but has failed to settle
at the Bernabeu.
And whilst Gill is not giving
much away, it appears more
signings are in the pipeline. “We
are planning for next season,”
Gill told MUTV.
“We have already bought
Chris Smalling from Fulham
and we are very excited about
him joining us in July. “Let’s
see what happens. Watch this
space.”
Although Sir Alex Ferguson
has had something to smile
about, it was confined purely
to the racecourse after a quite
shocking week in which his
side’s hopes of glory in the
Champions League were extinguished
and their Premier
League title bid suffered a potentially
fatal blow. “We have
had to face this many times,”
said the Scot.
“But the nature of our club,
it is part of our history. It happens.
“We have five league
games to go and we need to win
them, starting at Blackburn on

Now that it is official that the
San Antonio Spurs and Manu
Ginobili have agreed on a $38.9
million contract extension
for three years, Spurs nation
could not be any more
excited.
The break down is as
follows:
2010-2011 -- $11, 854,
584.00
2011-2012 -- $12,
981, 038.00
2012-2013 -- $14,
107, 492.00
B u t w h a t
will be the
impact on
the Spurs in retaining Ginobili?
Is this a good or bad thing? Here
are some pros and cons for
you to look at now that the
deal is official. Oh and I
am not good at math so
forgive me.
Pros:
Ginobili retires
a Spur as
he should.

team picks him up. Imagine
him in a Dallas Mavericks or
Phoenix Suns uniform? The
horror!
The reported deal is short
term at three years.
Spurs will be retaining

The “Big Three” stay intact
at least through the 2010-2011

player at this stage of his career.
Do the Spurs risk the chance he
gets injured again?

$54,135,160.00 in guaranteed
contracts next season, not including
Ginobili’s deal. Add the
$11.8 million due to Manu next
season, that pushes the Spurs to
$65, 989, 744.00 in guaranteed
contracts. With the salary-cap
lowering to what is being speculated
to be around $50.4-$53.6
million dollars. That puts the
Spurs way over the cap.
If you take the lower speculated
figure of $50.4 million, that puts
the Spurs at $15, 589, 744.00 million
over the cap.
The NBA luxury tax is speculated
to be at $61.2 million dollars.
After the math is done the
Spurs will be paying $15.5 million
for being over the cap and an
additional $9.4 million in luxury
taxes. Spurs will be $4.7 million
over the luxury-tax and an NBA
team pays dollar-for-dollar over
the luxury-tax line.
Grand total for the Spurs will
be paying $24.9 million for being
over the salary-cap and into the
luxury-tax.
This will hamper the Spurs in
retaining key role players such
as Matt Bonner, or offer Tiago
Splitter more than just the midlevel
exception not to mention
attracting a quality free-agent
this summer to play for the team
next season.

Every-down backs becoming scarce in NFL

The NFL’s workhorse running
backs need their own version of
Farm Aid.
The instances of one player
handling a team’s rushing load
are increasingly rare. Statistics
and the 2010 draft show just how
antiquated the role is becoming.
“You can have a workhorse
running back and give him his
carries, but you can be a little
more successful if you have a
couple of guys,” said Chicago
coach Lovie Smith, whose team
added ex-Minnesota RB Chester
Taylor in free agency to complement
starter Matt Forte. “It’s a
hard, grueling season. That’s why
we got Chester.
“We want to be able to run the
football. You need two -- and
preferably three -- good guys to
do that.”
A growing number of teams believe
in Smith’s philosophy. Led
by Tennessee’s Chris Johnson,
only six running backs averaged
18-plus carries a game last season.
That is the lowest total since
1992 and a drop of more than 50
percent since 13 RBs hit the mark
in 2007.
A 20-plus carry average -- once
a reasonable expectation for a
starter -- is no longer the norm.
There were four players in each
of the past three seasons with
such production. In comparison,
an average of 11 running backs
broke the 20-plus barrier between
2003 and 2007.
The main reason for the shift
is an overall increase in pass attempts.
In another generation, a
running back as physically gifted
as Minnesota’s Adrian Peterson
would already be on pace to become
this generation’s version of
Earl Campbell. Peterson, though,
didn’t crack the 20-carry average
in 2009 and wasn’t overworked
during his first three NFL seasons.
“I have a great affinity for the
run,” Vikings coach Brad Childress
said. “I think at some point
you have to put your hands on
people and exert your will. But
with that said, we are passing the
ball more. You have to find different
ways to utilize (Peterson).
Is it always going to be 30 carries
a game? I don’t think so.”
The greater aerial emphasis
coincided with a 2004 offseason
NFL decree spearheaded by
Indianapolis president Bill Polian.

Masters galleries take Tiger to heart

In his wildest dreams, Tiger
Woods couldn’t have hoped for
a better return.
Emerging from five months
of tabloid hell, Woods recorded
his best-ever opening round at
the Masters on Thursday, a fourunder-par
68 which left him in a
tie for seventh, two shots off the
lead of the reborn Fred Couples.
At the end of an eventful day,
even Woods was surprised.
“A little bit, yeah,” he acknowledged.
But as good as his start to the
tournament was, the tone of the
Woods comeback wasn’t determined
by his three birdies or the
two eagles, but by the fans.
He was embraced, encouraged
and applauded. We saw Thursday
that forgiveness is possible; that
people are willing to give Tiger
Woods a second chance.
“The people, I haven’t heard
them cheer this loud in all my
years here,” he said.
“So it certainly helped keep my
spirits up because I was certainly
missing a bunch of putts out there.
It helps when you get the crowd
like that.
“I said thank you all the way.
I was saying thank you all day.
The people were just incredible,
incredible all day.”
And maybe that was the real
lesson of Thursday for Woods:
that redemption isn’t a one-way
street.
He has his part to do, too.
As Augusta National chairman
Billy Payne sternly said the day
before, “with fame and fortune
comes responsibility, not invisibility.”
Woods needed to know, Payne
said, that he wasn’t playing golf
just for himself and that “every
kid he passes on the course wants
his swing, but would settle for his
smile.”
Woods clearly took the message
to heart. I’ve never seen
him smile so much, tip his cap
to the galleries and generally
acknowledge the fans like he did
Thursday.
He was a man in search of acceptance.
Not that he’s anti-social by
nature, but it’s always suited
Woods to play the ice man on the
golf course.
Certainly, it adds to his aura of
intimidation.
Nick Faldo said at the Masters’
champions dinner this week he
noticed that the Woods aura,
which “used to be about 30 feet
around,” keeping people away,
had shrunk considerably. He

eliminating the flaw that made
him such an easy out with runners
in scoring position in 2009.

strategy, no concept of situational

Ever since Cano broke into the
big leagues in 2005, club officials
had been quietly predicting he’d
someday win a batting title. Yet,
Cano drove in just 21.2 percent of
the runners from scoring position,
the fourth lowest in the majors last
year among those with 150-plus
chances.
One look at Cano today, however,
and it’s obvious something
has changed. He walked out of
Fenway Park Wednesday night
with a cool .417 average, but tellingly,
every pitch Cano swung at
in the Yankees’ first two games
against the Red Sox was in the
strike zone.
So the question is: What (or
who) has gotten into Cano’s
head?

gets to 350-plus carries.”
That’s something most of today’s
rushers won’t have to worry
about as the workhorse running
back gets put further and further
out to pasture.

The often-maligned Lucas produced
one of his best displays for
the Reds, capped by a fine second

second baseman aside one day in
late March and spoke candidly, if
not brusquely, to his teammate.
“I told Robby he’s no kid anymore,
he’s closer to 30 than 20,”
Rodriguez said of the 27-year-old
second baseman. “At this point
in his career, with his talent, he
should have one MVP (award),
maybe two.
“The thing is, on any other team

career-best .342. That was the
year he also batted .306 with runners
in scoring position -- almost
100 points higher than in ’09.
No wonder the Yankees were
uncomfortable. Cano’s .136 average
during last year’s World
Series was the most damning stat
of all. Here was a veritable hitting
machine, somehow reduced to a
near-automatic out at the season’s
most critical moment.
It made no sense, unless you
believe, as some talent evaluators
suggest, that Cano’s success came
too quickly, too easily. It took
Cano the better part of six years to
learn a major league work ethic.
“The guy has so much talent, it
didn’t get through to him that it’s
hard work that makes a great career,
not just skill,” said the scout. “You
could see he was just coasting.”
Other members of the Yankee
organization wonder, too, if Cano
was somehow being held back by
his close friendship with Melky
Cabrera. Cano, who is single, led
a robust off-the-field social life.
While he never found himself
in trouble, being separated from
Cabrera -- who was traded to the
Braves for Javier Vazquez over
the winter -- apparently changed
his outlook this spring.
Cano was one of the first players
in camp on a daily basis,
finally admitting, “I’m older and
smarter” now. Indeed, he knows
goal. Benitez said: “We have
some very good players and the
value of the squad is much greater
than in the past.
“Torres has a big value because
he is a good player, still young
and I think he can improve. “Lucas
was very hard-working. I am
really pleased with him in terms
of effort in every game and today
he and (Javier) Mascherano were
key players.”
Liverpool turned the tie around
with goals from Dirk Kuyt and
Lucas inside the opening 33
minutes. Torres finished off a
sweeping counter-attack to add a
third just before the hour.
Oscar Cardozo, double goalscorer
last week, set up a potentially
nervy finish by pulling one
back from a free-kick but Torres
killed the tie with a delightful goal
on 82 minutes.
Benfica coach Jorge Jesus said:
“Liverpool have a very good
team.
“We had very good periods,
especially in the first few minutes,
but Liverpool are a very
experienced team at this level.
“In the first half we commanded
the game for certain short periods
but we had difficulties coping
with the counter-attack from

“At 2-0 we were in a very difficult
position. We tried to look for
one goal to make things level but
the speed of Liverpool’s counterattack

seriously.
“I love it, especially hitting
behind two guys who are on base
a lot like (Mark) Teixeira and A-
Rod,” Cano said. “I feel blessed
to be on a team like this, hitting
in this lineup.”
With the stars properly aligned,
Cano could conceivably hit .340
again, drive in those 120-plus
runs the Yankees keep projecting.
They think they’re on course to
score 900-1,000 runs this season,
which they consider a critical
response the Red Sox’ upgraded
rotation and defense.
Cano will literally be in the
middle of that calculus, although
the Yankees are waiting to see if
his newly discovered patience will
survive the first slump. “That’s
always the test,” said manager
Joe Girardi. If Cano reverts to
his swing-at-everything strategy,
Jorge Posada stands ready to replace
him in the No. 5 spot.
Somehow, though, Girardi
doesn’t think it’ll come to that.
“I always though Robby wanted
to be a great player,” is what
the manager said, watching as
Cano inches closer to that reality
every day.

And that’s how he played golf
on Thursday, often laughing and
joking with KJ Choi.
Banished was the club throwing
— though he had to catch
himself a couple of times after
errant shots — the swearing and,
also, gone was the conservative,
playing-not-to-lose style that I
believe cost him a chance at a
major last year.
Woods didn’t want to dig too
deeply after Thursday’s round
about the metaphysical elements
of his return — “I’m here to play a
golf tournament,” he reminded us
— but when I asked him whether
he felt more at peace, he agreed.
“Yeah, I did,” he said. “I felt
very much so.”
Maybe buoyed by the thunderous
applause he received on the
first tee, Woods hit a beautiful
cut drive into the left-center of
the fairway, then hit a nice iron
approach to 10 feet.
“I got into the flow of the round
early,” he said.
He left the birdie putt short and
in the heart, a familiar refrain
throughout the day.
Some have compared this
comeback with his nine-month
layoff after knee reconstruction
surgery last year, but it’s more
akin to returning after his father’s
passing in 2006. That, like
this, was more about emotional
wounds than physical ones.
Interestingly, Woods compared
Thursday’s round with the U.S.
Open at Winged Foot — where
he missed the cut for the first time
as a pro at a major -— which followed
Earl Woods’ death.
“At the U.S. Open, after my dad
died I didn’t get into the rhythm of
the round. It took probably three
four holes; by then I was probably
2 or 3 over par, and you can’t do
that at the U.S. Open. Today I was
1 under through three, and that’s
a positive start.”
It helped that the course was set
up to rain birdies.
“I expected to go out there
and shoot something under par
today,” he said.
“After looking at all the scores,
guys were just tearing this place
apart, and looking at the tee
setups, the pins were friendly,
especially on the par 5s, and most
of the tees were up.
“If you drove the ball well, you
could get it down there where you
could be pretty aggressive. Unfortunately
I didn’t putt very good
today, otherwise it could have
been a very special round.”
His round hit high gear with the
only eagle of the day on the par-5
eighth, followed by an audacious
birdie on the ninth, where Woods
hooked a 5-iron about 40 yards
from the left tree line with a strong
right-to-left wind.
He got lucky breaks on 10 and
11, his tee shots hitting trees and
kicking back into play, but missed
a short birdie putt on 12, then
lipped out for eagle on 13. After
a miscue at 14, Woods responded
with an eagle at the 15th, bringing
a huge roar from the galleries.
“Somebody loves him,” said
CBS analyst David Feherty.
Woods had very good looks at
16 and 18 but missed both.
Although he wanted to focus on
golf, Woods did address the controversial
Nike ad which shows
him staring at the camera while
the words of his late father are
heard in the background.
“I think it’s very apropos,” he
said, “I think that’s what my dad
would say. It’s amazing how my
dad can speak to me from different
ways, even when he’s long
gone. He’s still helping me.”
“I think any son who has lost
a father and who meant so much
in their life, I think they would
understand the spot.”
Woods also said that he and
Payne had spoken, though he
didn‘t seek to defend himself.
“I was disappointed in myself,
too,” he said.
Woods seemed happiest,
though, that finally the conversation
was back on golf.
He’s even thinking about winning
a fifth green jacket.
“Why enter the event if you
don’t think you can win? If I don’t
feel like I can win, then I won’t
enter the event,“ he said.
“I felt, this is what I can do. For
the most part, I’ve been pretty efficient
at it most of my life.”

About 2,700 children will be
abused today. It’s time to end the
cycle of abuse.
Children and adults whose
lives have been turned around by
having a CASA volunteer in their
lives will speak out at a rally being
held Monday April 12 at the
Bexar County Courthouse during
Child Abuse Prevention Month.
Chadwick Sapenter is an example
of how a CASA volunteer
can change a child’s life. Chadwick’s
drug addicted father died,
his mom had mental problems
and drug addictions. He spent his
childhood trying to raise his two
younger brothers in an unimaginable
environment of neglect and
abuse. Sapenter ended up in foster
care. CASA volunteer, Les Foster,
saved his life by speaking up
for him in court, mentoring him,
caring about him and insisting
that he could achieve anything in
life he wanted.
Sapenter’s message is motivational
for other children with
less-than-perfect lives and advocates
who devote their careers
and volunteer hours to help them.
“It’s not about what happens to
you, it’s about how you catch it

CEO of Texas CASA. “We urge
Texans to step forward and become
a CASA volunteer. CASA
volunteers are special. They provide
essential one-on-one love,
guidance and hope for a safe,
permanent home to the children
they advocate for. No child should
have to navigate the child welfare
system without a CASA volunteer
by their side,” said Gagen. “However,
less than half of the children
in state protective custody have
the benefit of assistance and support
from a CASA volunteer or
CASA program. Our vision is
to provide a CASA volunteer to
EVERY child who needs one.”

can really get to know the child
or sibling group and what their
current and future needs are.
The CASA volunteer visits
the child regularly, monitors the
child’s progress and the progress
of the CPS case in general. The
CASA volunteer interviews everyone
involved in the child’s life
and reviews all relevant medical,
educational and legal records,
and reports his or her findings
to the court and other parties.
CASA volunteers make recommendations
to judges about the
children’s best interests now and
in the future.
In FY 2009, 5,648 CASA
volunteers advocated for 19,818
children in CPS custody, helping
to guide these children through
the overburdened foster care
system to safe, permanent homes.
But, this number represents less
than HALF of the children in CPS
custody last year.
We want to be able to provide
a CASA volunteer for every child
who needs one,” said Gagen. “To
do this, we must support the volunteer
recruitment efforts of our
local CASA programs, especially
in our urban areas – Houston, Dallas,
San Antonio -- with increased
public awareness about CASA,
our mission, and the need for
more volunteer advocates. Our
short-term goal is a 30 percent
increase in volunteers, or 7300
volunteers, by the end of FY 2
011.”

judge may appoint a committed
volunteer called a CASA or
Court Appointed Special Advocate®.

Health celebró la Semana Nacional
de Salud Pública (que se lleva
a cabo del 5-11 de abril) con una
feria comunitaria gratuita en Main
Plaza. Con múltiples sesiones
de acondicionamiento físico,
medidas de estatura y de peso,
además de una vasta cantidad
de presentaciones interactivas,
folletos informativos y regalos,
los residentes y visitantes de la
ciudad participaron en la feria
comunitaria del bienestar.
Metro Health otorgó programas
claves donde se informó a los residentes

pública y la importancia de la salvaguardia

Most notably, he has studied
with medical pioneer Dr. Ralph
Cloward, who designed several of
the best operations for the spine.
Over time, Dr. Parra has improved
upon those techniques with his own
modifications. For these reasons,
neurosurgeons from all over the
world routinely follow Dr. Parra in an
effort to learn from his expertise. He
was Board Certified by the American
Board of Neurological Surgeons in
1978 and by the newer American
Board of Spine Surgery in 1998. Dr.
Parra is a member of the Congress of
Neurological Surgery, the American

dotación de pizza a 250 personas
destituidas en el comedor de
Salvation Army en el 226 Nolan
Streety y el miércoles sirvió a un
número igual de comensales en el
St. Vincent De Paul Dining Room
en el 928 West Commerce.
La entrega de pizza fue manejada
discretamente sin previo aviso
a los clientes que asisten a estos
dos centros, a fin de que quienes
necesiten ayuda sean quienes la
reciban. La entrega se hizo de
acuerdo a las listas de clientes
habituales registrados.
Little Caesars Love Kitchen
fue creada para proveer alimentos
de calidad entre gente necesitada,
dijo Jason Hotchkiss, concesionario
local de esta empresa. Lo
cual beneficia a más de dos millones
de personas en un plan de

de vida. El accidente había sido
horrible. En las carreteras de
Alemania se corre a velocidades
exorbitantes y, cuando hay algún
choque, es siempre desastroso.
Así había sido éste en la cercanías
del pueblo de Altdorft,
Alemania.
De tres personas que venían en
el automóvil, Marion Ploch fue
la única que sobrevivió. Su situación
era crítica porque además
de haber quedado toda mutilada,
traía en el vientre una criatura
de tres meses de gestación. Los
médicos hicieron todo lo posible
por salvarla, pero su cuerpo no

Lágrimas sinceras
El juez Robert Cassin, de San
José, California, tenía una difícil
tarea que realizar. La señora
Florine O’Shea había muerto a
los ochenta y un años de edad,
y lo había designado a él como
su testamentario. Lo extraño
del caso era que ella, en su testamento,
había estipulado que
se repartiera su herencia de 625
mil dólares dándole 62 dólares
con 50 centavos a cada persona
que por su propia iniciativa asistiera
al funeral, y 625 dólares a
cada persona que llorara sinceramente
por ella. Y para lograrlo,
ella había especificado que fuera
él mismo, el juez Cassin, quien
determinara, usando su propio
criterio, quién lloraba con toda
sinceridad y quién no. De modo
que para la señora O’Shea, llorar
la pérdida de alguien valía diez
veces más que simplemente asistir
a su funeral... con tal de que
no fueran “lágrimas de cocodrilo”.
¡Qué difícil es distinguir entre
lágrimas sinceras y lágrimas que

UTSA takes a look at the
“Generation of Exclusion”

In our column, “Let’s talk
about health” we always try to
share with you, the concept that
health is the state of wellbeing,
physically, mentally and socially
and not only the absence of illness.
We also try to reiterate the importance
of understanding who
we are, as that is one of the first
steps to better understand ourselves
and then take the steps to
improve ourselves.
Recently, the President of
UTSA, Dr. Ricardo Romo and
the Director of the Mexico Center,
Dr. Harriett Romo, welcomed
the renowned scholar
Edward Telles, from Princeton
University.
He discussed the content of his
most recent book, “Generation
of Exclusion” to a group of academicians
from UTSA and other
institutions, Hispanic students
and community advocates.
As the educational level goes
down, so is the expectation of
economic and social improvement.
We all hope that we will
be able to understand the causes
of this problem (that Dr. Telles
properly addressed as a “Black
box”) in order to solve them.
For the time being, I appreciate
the enormous contribution
that UTSA has been doing, not
only as a forum of the discussion
of the problems, but as a grass
roots and everyday participant
on the efforts towards the progress
of this community.
Dr. Harriett Romo joins us as
a guest and described that meeting.
UTSA students benefitted
from having Dr. Edward Telles,
Professor at Princeton University,
on campus February 25th
to talk about his recent book
Generations of Exclusion. In the
1960s a study done at UCLA resulted
in the book The Mexican
American People, which was
the first major study of Mexican
Americans. At that time, Mexican
Americans were the nation’s
second largest minority group
after African Americans.
Dr. Telles and his co-author
Dr. Vilma Ortiz found contact
information for the persons interviewed
in the 1960s and decided
to try to track down those subjects
to see what had happened to
them, their children and grandchildren
some 40 years later.
Mexican Americans are now
the nation’s largest ethnic majority
and the findings from the new
study are eye-opening. Telles
and Ortiz found that there was
very little assimilation and upward
mobility for the Mexican
Americans interviewed in the
1960s, especially in education.
The important issue is that
higher levels of education is
key to economic success, and if
Mexican Americans are not doing
well in the area of education
they are not likely to have professional
or high paying jobs.
Both the 1960 study and the
recent follow-up focused on
Mexican Americans in San Antonio
and Los Angeles. Telles
emphasized that the context of
the cities was important, with
L.A. having more manufacturing
jobs; however, the same lack of
mobility in education was found
in both cities.
The majority of fourth generation
Mexican Americans continue
to live in largely Hispanic
neighborhoods, marry other Hispanics
and think of themselves
as Mexican.
Mexican Americans made
strides from the first to the second
generation, but economic
progress largely halted at the
second generation.
Their findings show that even
though Mexican Americans learn
English rapidly, poverty rates remain
high for later generations.
Telles and Ortiz have won
numerous prizes for their work
on this project, and having Dr.
Telles visit UTSA gave undergraduate
and graduate students
the opportunity to ask questions
and think about these important
findings and issues.
Telles commented that he was
impressed with the insightful
questions and comments of the
UTSA students and he urged
them to take on research projects
to determine why there has been
so little progress in education
and what can be done about it.
CTRC study is testing viral
therapy for lung cancer

A virus that destroys cancer
cells but leaves normal cells unharmed
may offer hope to those
affected by one of the most
deadly forms of lung cancer,
according to investigators from
the Cancer Therapy & Research
Center (CTRC) at The University
of Texas Health Science Center
at San Antonio.
The CTRC has started patient
enrollment in a clinical research
study using the viral treatment
Reolysin, in combination with
two conventional chemotherapy
drugs, to treat patients with
squamous non-small cell lung
cancer.
For most patients, current treatments
do not cure the disease.
“The study offers new hope
for this group of patients with
lung cancer,” said Alain C. Mita,
M.D., a medical oncologist and
assistant professor of medicine
at the CTRC.
Reolysin is an experimental
treatment derived from a common
virus called the reovirus.
It directly kills many types of
cancer cells and works synergistically
with many approved chemotherapies
and radiation.
When the reovirus enters a
cancer cell, it produces thousands
of copies of itself, causing
the cell to burst. But the reovirus
can replicate only in cancer cells
with mutations along a signaling
pathway in the cell called the Ras
pathway, while leaving normal

cells unharmed. Approximately
two-thirds of all human cancers
express this particular mutation
and are therefore a potential target
for Reolysin treatment.
As many as 55 patients are expected
to be treated in the trial
(REO 021). They will receive

April recognized as Parkinson’s
Awareness month

On April 6, the Alamo Area
Parkinson’s Support Group
(AAPSG) declared the month
of April as Parkinson’s Disease
Awareness Month to bring attention
to a sickness that affects
more than 1.5 million Americans
and 5,000 in San Antonio, according
to a Mayoral Proclamation.
AAPSG provides information
and support groups for Parkinson’s
patients and caregivers in
San Antonio and surrounding
areas. They offer free support
group meetings each month to
anyone in need.
Parkinson’s disease is a progressive
disorder of the central
nervous system. Clinically, the
disease is characterized by a
decrease in spontaneous movement,
gait difficulty, postural
instability, rigidity and tremor. It
primarily affects people 60 years
old and older, but increasingly
is affecting people in their 20s
through 50s.
“It does not discriminate,” said
Diane Johnson, from the American
Parkinson’s Disease Association
(ADPA) Health Science
Center. “There is treatment to
ease the symptoms, but there is
no cure.”
According to the Mayo Foundation
for Medical Education
and Research (MFMER), Parkinson’s
disease develops gradually
–often starting with a barely
noticeable tremor in just one
hand. However, while tremors
are the most well-known sign of
Parkinson’s disease, the disorder
also causes a slowing or freezing
of movement.
Early detection is difficult.
Some symptoms to look for include
little or no facial expressions,
and stiffness in arms when
walking. Speech often becomes
soft and mumbling. Parkinson’s
symptoms tend to worsen as the
disease progresses.
“In the United States there is
an estimated 1.5 million Americans
living with Parkinson’s today,”
said Donald Robin Ph.D.,
president of the AAPSG. “In San
Antonio there are approximately
5,000 people living with Parkinson’s.
Ninety percent of all those
living with Parkinson’s disease
develop a form of speech disorder.”

Stimulation (DBS) has made
remarkable strikes in the care
of Parkinson’s patients. DBS
evolved out of surgeries in which
doctors use heat probes to burn
and permanently damage small
regions of the brain –in the case
of Parkinson’s, regions where
patients’ tremors and quakes are
known to arise. These same brain
areas are targeted with DBS, but
instead of destroying tissue, doctors
implant slender electrodes
that pump steady pulses of electricity
–think of it as a sort of
pacemaker for the brain.
However, DBS is not a cure
for Parkinson’s. Though the surgery
can help improve patients’
movement, it does nothing for
non-motor symptoms of the disease,
such as depression, anxiety,
balance problems, cognitive
decline and memory loss.
In some cases, the procedure
can make these issues worse;
in others, it can cause problems
where there were none. In all
cases, patients need constant
medical care after surgery, as
their disease continues to progress.
“Parkinson’s is a chronic,
neurological disease,” said Dr.
Robin, “so that means you still
have to manage it over the long
term.”
April 11 marks the 235th
birthday of Dr. James Parkinson,
who first recognized the disease
now named after him –this date
has also been declared as Parkinson’s
Awareness Day.
AAPSG also announced that
APDA has launched a Parkinson’s
Rehab Resource Center
based at Boston University’s
Sargent College of Health and
Rehabilitation Sciences. The
center has licensed physical therapists
that can answer questions
regarding exercise programs,
free educational materials and
the benefits of exercise for people
with Parkinson’s disease.
In addition to the proclamation
campaign in April, individuals
can join The APDA Alamo Area
PDSG/San Antonio Chapter’s
annual 5k walk/run-a-thon, a national
fundraising effort supporting
scientific research to find a
cure for Parkinson’s disease.
Everyone can join in the quest as
participants, cheering sections,
sponsors and contributors.
The walk/run-a-thon will begin
May 22 and take place at the
OP Schnabel Park, located at
9606 Bandera Rd., at 8 a.m. and
will end at noon. Check in time
is at 7:30 a.m.

a difference in the lives of those
living with Parkinson’s disease.

en 2009 el mayor núcleo
de inmigrantes latinoamericanos
que recibieron la residencia legal en
Estados Unidos, informó el Departamento
de Seguridad Nacional.
Un comunicado de esa dependencia
del Gobierno federal
indicó que en 2009, 1.130.818
personas legalizaron su permanencia
en el país.
De ese total, un 15 por ciento
era mexicano (164.920), un 6 por
ciento chino (64.238) y un 5 por
ciento filipino (60.029).
El comunicado indicó que un
59 por ciento de los beneficiados
por el estatus de residente legal
ya vivían en el país en el momento
de ser notificados.
Añadió que casi dos tercios
consiguieron la residencia legal
en base a su relación familiar con
un ciudadano estadounidense o
con un residente permanente en
el país.
Otros inmigrantes de origen
latinoamericano que recibieron
la residencia legal en el país fueron
los dominicanos (49.414),
cubanos (38.954), colombianos
(27.849), haitianos (24.280), salvadoreños
(19.909) y peruanos
(16.957).
De acuerdo con la legislación,
un residente legal puede vivir de
forma permanente en cualquier
lugar de Estados Unidos, ser
dueño de propiedades y asistir a
escuelas y universidades públicas.
También puede ingresar en
ciertas ramas de las Fuerzas
Armadas del país y solicitar su
naturalización estadounidense
tras cumplir ciertos requisitos y
haber contado con la residencia
legal un mínimo de cinco años.
En 2008 el número de residencias
legales concedidas fue levemente
menor (1.107.126).

La Presidencia dijo en un comunicado

Organización impulsa iniciativas para
ayudar a estudiantes hispanos
(EFE)- La Liga de Ciudadanos
Latinoamericanos Unidos (LU-
LAC) busca ayudar a disminuir
los índices de deserción escolar
entre estudiantes latinos y prepararles
para tener un futuro laboral
exitoso a través de dos iniciativas.
El nuevo programa de la organización
tiene el objetivo de
trabajar directamente con las
comunidades a través de programas
que asistan a los jóvenes a
terminar con éxito sus estudios.
“Es un programa muy importante
porque sólo un 45 por ciento
de los estudiantes se gradúa,
aunque la mayoría tiene deseos
de terminar sus estudios”, dijo a
Efe Lizette Jenness Olmos, vocera
de LULAC.
De acuerdo con cifras de la organización,
sólo el 45 por ciento
de los estudiantes latinos a nivel
nacional se gradúa de la escuela
secundaria cada año.
El programa, que será patrocinado
con fondos de “Ford Motor
Company”, designará diez
“consejos” en todo el país, que
durante un período de dos años
desarrollarán la iniciativa.
Olmos señaló que una vez que
LULAC seleccione los consejos
a nivel nacional, diez en total,
éstos serán los encargados de
trabajar directamente con las escuelas
y las comunidades.
LULAC forma parte de la
coalición que impulsa la Campaña
por la Equidad de Escuelas Secundarias
(CHSE, por sus siglas
en inglés), que busca mejoras al
sistema educativo que ayuden a

Study reveals legalization won’t improve
migrants’ economic prospects
(EFE)- Legalization of undocumented
immigrants would
bring no short term improvement
in their job opportunities
or higher incomes, according to
a new study by the Public Policy
Institute of California.
The report, entitled “Immigrant
Legalization: Assessing
the Labor Market Effects,” was
released Tuesday April 6, by
PPIC, which describes itself as
a provider of “independent, objective,
nonpartisan research on
major economic, social, and political
issues.”
“A legalization program is unlikely
to lead to dramatic changes
in the labor market,” PPIC research
fellow Laura Hill, one of
the study’s authors, said.
“We wouldn’t expect it to
significantly affect the job prospects
of low-skilled workers in
the short run, whether immigrant
or native-born,” she said.
The report analyzed the results
of the New Immigrant Survey
conducted among roughly 4,500
immigrants who became legal
permanent residents in 2003.
PPIC also cites follow-up
studies of the roughly 3 million
immigrants whose status was legalized
as part of an amnesty in

improvements to greater training
and better command of English,
among other things, and not to
the immediate effect of the immigrants’
new legal status.
The PPIC authors said they
also found very little evidence
supporting the view that legalization
will have significant effects
on the economy in general,
such as boosting tax revenue or
increasing demand for public assistance.
Because the majority of “unauthorized”
workers - PPIC prefers
that term as more accurate and
less politicized than “illegal” or
“undocumented” - already pay
taxes, it is not expected that legalization
would produce a notable
increase in tax revenues.
The lack of job advancement
among unauthorized workers
with little training suggests that
legalization will lead to very little
increase in competition in the
labor market with their nativeborn
counterparts.
The study also found that legalization
would not produce any
notable increase in the demand
for social assistance programs.
However, the report mentions
one exception: the Earned
Income Tax, which can be reclaimed
from federal taxes by
low-income workers with a valid
Social Security number, since
many new legalized immigrants
qualify for that benefit.
Also, if the ability to use English
well comes to be a requirement
in any new legalization
program, the costs of offering
those language courses will certainly
be significant, Hill said.
“We suggest that California
lobby vigorously for any future
impact grants to offset any related
expenditures,” the report
says.
The PPIC analysis also says
that the economic costs and benefits
are not the only considerations
in implementing a legalization
program.
“Legalization would have farreaching
implications,” PPIC
says. “For example, it may prevent
deportations that separate
families, including those with
U.S.-born children, and encourage
immigrants to fully participate
in civic life.”

The pungent hickory smoked flavor of the turkey contrasts well
with the sweet and sour tastes of honey and vinegar and orange
juice and dried cranberries. Pecans complement with their
smooth taste.
Dressing:
1 teaspoon grape seed or canola oil
2 teaspoons honey
1/4 cup orange juice
2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar
2 teaspoons cracked black pepper
Salad:
1 cup spring mix lettuce
1 large radish, sliced paper thin
4 ounces (1/4 inch thick julienne slices) Boar’s Head
Hickory Smoked Black Forest Turkey Breast
4 to 6 whole pecans
Dried cranberries for garnish, optional
In small bowl, whisk oil with honey. Whisk in orange juice and
then vinegar. Add pepper and set aside. Add a little more honey
for desired thickness.
Build the salad beginning with lettuce and radish slices. Toss.
Add turkey and pecans. Toss again and add dressing. Top with
cranberries if desired. Add more dressing to taste.
