JUDITH A. KINNAIRD (SEG 2002 F)
Judith was born and
brought up in Wales.
worked as a geologist
for three years for the
began work on a project on Nigeria,
which led to a move to the University
of St. Andrews in Scotland to join a team
researching the Mesozoic ring complexes
of central Nigeria. Judith’s role
in the team was to focus on the mineralization
of the granites. This research
led to the completion of both master’s
and Ph.D. degrees at St. Andrews and to
a lifelong interest in aspects of economic
geology.
Judith has spent most of her career
as a University lecturer and has taught
in University College Cork in Ireland,
as a distance tutor for the Open Univer -
sity in Scotland and Ireland, and, for
the last 13 years, she has been at the
University of the Witwatersrand in
Johannesburg, South Africa, where she
was promoted to associate professor in
2004. She is currently Deputy Director
Institute within the University.
Research interests cover a diverse
range of deposits that cover projects on
dimension stone, gem deposits, Li-Be,
Nb-Sn-W, REE-U, and Pb-Zn mineralization.
Currently, her interests include
platinum and chromium mineralization
of the Bushveld Complex, with a focus
on the northern limb; the link between
the Damaran orogen of Namibia and
the Katangan-Lufilian of Zambia; and
uranium deposits of southern Africa.
This research has taken her to many of
the countries of Africa.
Judith has served the SEG as Regional
VP Africa (2004–2008), as a member of
the Committee on Committees, as SEG
Newsletter contributor (2005–2011), as a
field trip co-ordinator for the SEG 2008
joint meeting with the GSSA at Misty
Hills in South Africa, and as Councilor
(2011 to date).
Vision Statement
The Society has a high reputation in
the world of economic geology for the
quality of its publications, its worldwide
membership of about 7,000 in 100
countries, and its strong support of the
student members. In view of the aging
academic fraternity, industry and
academia need to work together, now
more than ever, to support young
researchers and academic staff to ensure
the highest caliber geologists for the
future of both industry and academia.
Such capacity-building needs to incorporate
fieldwork skills, human resource
development, and technological training.
The Society is taking a lead in promoting
student development. In recent
years, international student field trips
have been initiated to give selected international
students the opportunity to see
deposits of different styles in various
parts of the world in order to broaden
their experience. In addition, in 2011 an
Education and Training Committee was
established and new training courses
have been designed and integrated with
preexisting courses. The program has 13
short courses, 6 week-long workshops
