The 5 Bel Unit 2053 c1932 - ©Pamlin Prints M579. THE BRIGHTON BELLE PROJECT - Bringing the Brighton Belle back to the mainline! We have been on public display! The Bluebell Railway most kindly placed Car Doris and Car 88 on display at Horsted Keynes, in a place where we could be seen clearly. Our debut was met with a wave of people visiting over the three days we were there, with both cars manned. The interest was really great, with people reminiscing about the train and saying how much they looked forward to seeing it in service once more, and having a ride. Progress with the restoration There was a meeting in Derby to make the plan of everything needed to be done, so that a critical path can be mapped out for the restoration. That way we can keep tags on what’s next, how much it costs and when we will get it done for. The current position for each car is shown below: Car 91 - motor brake third: This vehicle is at Barrow Hill to have the heavy engineering performed on it to be able to attain main line certification. The work being done includes the fitment of new bogies for main line running, new traction motors and control gear, new control and electrical systems, new brakes. The vehicle is a stripped out shell and following this work, it will go to derby to have the interior refitted in the style required for its new career. Car 88 - motor brake third: This vehicle is at the Bluebell Railway on show. It has its old interior fitments restored to it complete with BR seat fabric. Even so, it still looks good. When ready, it will go to Barrow Hill to have the heavy engineering work done to it to attain main line certification. Car 85 – parlour third: This vehicle is at Southall, but is earmarked to move soon to Ramparts at Derby for its thorough bodywork overhaul. Currently planning is going on to specify the kitchen to be put in the vehicle to enable it to handle meals, plus the new interior fit that it will receive, as its decor has suffered from its time out of use. After body overhaul the car will go to Barrow Hill for the fitting of new bogies, brake gear etc. Car 87 – parlour third: This vehicle is at the Keith and Dufftown railway. As soon as there is space for it at Southall, it will be going there to await body overhaul at Ramparts at Derby. Thereafter it will go to Barrow Hill for fitting of new bogies, brake gear etc. Car Doris – kitchen first: This vehicle, on the Bluebell railway, is not owned by the 5BEL Trust. No arrangements may be made until it can be acquired by the Trust. The interior of Doris is in good condition. After acquisition the interior will be removed for restoration ‘as was’, whilst the engineering works for main line running are completed, and then the car will be refitted in its former glory.
