Bringing Back The Brighton Belle.
The wonderful Brighton Belle, the only electric all-Pullman train in the world, succeeded the steam
service between London and Brighton in 1933 and became the world's first electric inter-city train. A
much loved railway icon, the three five-car train sets were withdrawn by BR in 1972. Now we have a
wonderful idea - an amazing feat of restoration, to bring together a complete train set and return the
Belle to the mainline! To follow progress with the restoration and help.
THE BRIGHTON BELLE PROJECT - Bringing the Brighton Belle back to the mainline!
We have been on public display! The Bluebell Railway most kindly placed Car Doris and Car 88 on
display at Horsted Keynes, in a place where we could be seen clearly. Our debut was met with a
wave of people visiting over the three days we were there, with both cars manned.
The interest was really great, with people reminiscing about the train and saying how much they
looked forward to seeing it in service once more, and having a ride.
Progress with the restoration
There was a meeting in Derby to make the plan of everything needed to be done, so that a critical
path can be mapped out for the restoration. That way we can keep tags on what’s next, how much it
costs and when we will get it done for. The current position for each car is shown below:
Car 91 - motor brake third: This vehicle is at Barrow Hill to have the heavy engineering performed on
it to be able to attain main line certification. The work being done includes the fitment of new bogies
for main line running, new traction motors and control gear, new control and electrical systems, new
brakes. The vehicle is a stripped out shell and following this work, it will go to derby to have the
interior refitted in the style required for its new career.
Car 88 - motor brake third: This vehicle is at the Bluebell Railway on show. It has its old interior
fitments restored to it complete with BR seat fabric. Even so, it still looks good. When ready, it will go
to Barrow Hill to have the heavy engineering work done to it to attain main line certification.
Car 85 – parlour third: This vehicle is at Southall, but is earmarked to move soon to Ramparts at
Derby for its thorough bodywork overhaul. Currently planning is going on to specify the kitchen to be
put in the vehicle to enable it to handle meals, plus the new interior fit that it will receive, as its
decor has suffered from its time out of use. After body overhaul the car will go to Barrow Hill for the
fitting of new bogies, brake gear etc.
Car 87 – parlour third: This vehicle is at the Keith and Dufftown railway. As soon as there is space for
it at Southall, it will be going there to await body overhaul at Ramparts at Derby. Thereafter it will go
to
Barrow Hill for fitting of new bogies, brake gear etc.
Car Doris – kitchen first: This vehicle, on the Bluebell railway, is not owned by the 5BEL Trust.
No arrangements may be made until it can be acquired by the Trust. The interior of Doris is in good
condition. After acquisition the interior will be removed for restoration ‘as was’, whilst the
engineering works for main line running are completed, and then the car will be refitted in its former
glory. The kitchen will be overhauled and modernised for today’s requirements.
01/10 - Richard Jones - Pullman Race Specials – Roof Boards?
A query for the experts out there....
Does anyone know what wording roof boards on Race Specials carried – in particular those for
Goodwood Races (if they carried them).
Two books have photographs within, these being: -
1. E J Bedford photographed Race Specials in 1935 (plates 123 & 124 of “E J Bedford of Lewes...... “
Wild Swan ISBN 0 906867 75 4.
This shows 2 Pullman Race Specials near Lewes.
2. Rodger Kidner’s book “Pullman Trains in Britain” Oakwood Press ISBN 0 85361 531 4.
I can’t determine whether the two photos are carrying roof boards or not.
Any assistance or other details of these trains in the’30s would be appreciated for modelling
purposes.
03/10 - David Batstone - MK1 Pullman Formation in BR Grey & Blue Livery.
I am hoping the readership can help me with a query.
I have recently purchased a rake of 8 x Bachmann Grey & Blue liveried Pullman cars for my model
railway. I am planning to run the rake of cars with a Blue liveried Class 55 Deltic and standard Blue &
Grey liveried gangwayed Brake (BG).
I would very much like to know if any Pullman services on the East Coast Main Line operated with
just the Grey & Blue liveried cars within the formation, and on which on which service.
? It seems likely as there are both first and second class versions. Having trawled the 'inter-net' for
photographic evidence, I can only find photographs of complete formations of the umber & cream
liveried with a Maroon liveried (BG), or a mixture of the two or a mixture with conventional stock!
Any response will be most helpful.
THE RESTORATION IN CHEYENE OF CAR No.57 – Mike Pannell.
©M.Pannell.
July 2010 - CAR No.57 at 15th street in the heart of downtown Cheyenne next to the UP tracks.
We now know the following information on our cars history….
Our car was ordered in 1887 by Gen Grenville .M. Dodge. This is the same man that engineered the
Union Pacific through Cheyenne for his current project, the construction of the Denver ,Texas and
Fort Worth Railroad. He as chief engineer placed orders for all the locomotives and rolling stock for
this new railroad, 12 engines, 1 baggage car, 75 stock cars, 38 box cars, 160 coal cars, 4 passenger
cars, 1 mail car, and 20 refrigerated cars.
Amongst the 4 passenger cars is ours. It was to be the first car built, DT&FW No 45 costing $6,000.
In 1890 it became Union Pacific Denver and Gulf number 371, then in 1899 became Colorado and
Southern 57.
Coupé News – No. 92 – October 2010 - Page 18 of 29

Renumbering again took place in January 1907 when it emerged from overhaul as C&S no 513. In
late 1927 it was retired from passenger service and converted to company service as a bunk car and
renumbered C&S 99924.
It was at this point that the windows were removed, all interior fittings scrapped and the interior
painted for the first of 9 or 10 times!
It was retired as a travelling bunk car in March 1943 and listed as scrapped at Denver.
The car somehow made a final journey to Cheyenne and was placed on the ground at the C&S
roundhouse here and used as crew layover facilities until 1954. Purchased from the C&S by Joseph
Tamayo an employee and moved to Carlin Avenue, it became a family home until 2008.
CAR No.57 undergoing Restoration prior to its move to 15th Street.
Restoration Progress Autumn (Fall) 2010.
WE HAVE ARRIVED…….
Yes we are now on 15th street in the heart of downtown Cheyenne next to the UP tracks that our car
travelled on 120 years ago.
Thanks to the assistance of the city of Cheyenne and the Cheyenne Depot Museum, Car 57 is in a
place befitting the history and importance of our rare Pullman car. A hastily arranged move in July
and rapid tireless work to ensure the car looked the part for its new location, ensured that our
project was ready for Frontier days down on 15th street next to Gunslingers Square.
CAR No.57 being ready for the move to 15th Street.
Thanks to Bruce from Mountain services who prepared and moved the car at no cost, we arrived at
6.30 am on Sunday 18th July. Several days of work to enable visitors to tour the car followed, and
the response has been an overwhelming YES to the car being there, in the right place, in the historic
heart of the city.
We are constantly surprised and amazed at what comes to light in the course of restoration, here are
a few gems from recent weeks
Found covered in soot in one of our top windows a ticket to the first ever Paris air show at the Grand
Palais in Paris in 1909.
This is truly amazing, at this show for the first time were the Wright bros and the Wright flyer, and
Louis Bleriot who had just crossed the English Channel for the first time. An astonishing find it still
requires more cleaning and conservation to reveal the signature and other details.
Found covered by 10 layers of paint it establishers beyond any doubt the builders of our car, in
beautiful gilt lettering ‘built by the Pullman Company Pullman, Ill’
We have spent many hours stripping the clerestory windows and revealing the cherry wood, now the
roof is stripped we have light coming in for the first time since 1954.
Coupé News – No. 92 – October 2010 - Page 23 of 29

In late August we took the unenviable plunge and stripped all 4 layers of rolled roofing off the car,
whilst the roof looks better for this it leaves us with a roof full of nail holes to fill, seal and paint
before winter sets in.
Donations towards the project can be
sent to…….
and for USA Citizens this may be tax
deductible
AQUILA – COLNE VALLEY RAILWAY – PAUL LEMON & ASHLEY ORROW.
©Paul Lemmon.
AQUILA.
The Colne Valley Railway’s Pullman Car AQUILA has re-entered traffic after the major rebuilding
work which has taken place over the last year.
As can be seen the final lettering and lining has yet to be completed, and this is the first use of
Williamson’s paint at this Railway (which shows the difference from the brown previously used on
the adjacent vehicles. This complete end has been completely rebuilt and the ugly wiring box on the
other side has been removed, with the electrics re-routed underneath.
The cars roof now overlaps over the end panel – previously it went inside causing water to get inside
the panels.
Originally covered within Coupé News May 2010 Issue No.87. Since then our very excellent
craftsman Syd Hales with assistance of Ashley Orrow have rebuilt the vestibule end from scratch
using handmade templates taken from the pieces of the end frame that had not completely rotted
away.
We found early on that trying to take dimensions from the other end would not work as the two
coach ends were not identical.
The rebuilt vestibule end of car AQUILA.
As already mentioned that the original roof ends were tucked under the steel end panels causing
water to run down between the inside panelling and the outside. This is what caused the rot.
This has been changed so that water will now run off the roof edge externally and sills have been
added to the windows to reduce water running down the lower panels.
New steel plates were made for the floor as these had also rusted to nothing.
The roof has been stripped and retreated with ‘Robex Proflex’ after a number of holes and rusty
areas had been filled. The sides have been heavily sanded and produced some interesting artwork
below the surface including the logo of a well known cider company (Bulmers). Both sides have now
been repainted but time had run out and the transfers or lining have yet to be applied.
Aquila is now in use for its busiest time of the year and she will be taken out of service again after
Christmas for the other end vestibule area to be similarly rebuilt and finishing of the body sides.
Significant work is also needed to the interior fabric but at present we are unable to fund this.
My thanks to both Paul Lemmon Operations Manager and Ashley Orrow of the Colne Valley Railway.
