WIMBLEDON LIVE ON AND The era of waiting up until late at night for delayed coverage of the world’s oldest and most venerated tennis tournament is over. BEGINNING on Monday June 20, Seven will broadcast The 125th Championships, Wimbledon 2011, live throughout Australia. The broadcast will be hosted by Todd Woodbridge with expert commentary from John Newcombe on the 40th anniversary of his third and final singles’ victory at the All England Club. The team also includes Rennae Stubbs and Sam Smith. In addition, Seven will be taking commentary from a clutch of the biggest names in tennis via the host broadcaster BBC, among them John McEnroe, Boris Becker, Lindsay Davenport and Tim Henman. During the first week the live broadcast kicks off at 9pm (AEST) on 7TWO, and from 10pm on 7TWO during the second week. The coverage will then be on Channel 7 from 11pm each night. All singles and doubles finals, as well as the singles semi-finals, will also be exclusively live on Channel 7, while starting on 7TWO in some states. COMMENTARY TEAM Todd Woodbridge Host AFTER six years in the commentary box at the Australian Open, Todd takes over the hosting chair for The 125 th Championships, Wimbledon. He is an engaging and insightful performer on air and has fast become a favourite with viewers. His post-match interview with Kim Clijsters at The Australian Open this year, in which he speculated about her being pregnant, was one of the light-hearted moments of the tournament. As a player Todd’s record at Wimbledon is remarkable. He won the doubles’ title nine times and achieved his career high singles ranking of 19 after reaching the semi-finals of Wimbledon in 1997. In all he claimed 83 ATP tournament doubles titles, an all-time record. “It’s a great honour to host our coverage,” Todd says. “I can't wait to give the viewers at home an intricate perspective of the Championships. Our commentary team has so much experience and success at the Championships, that inner knowledge of the pressures, traditions and expertise of playing on grass will make great viewing.” John Newcombe Expert commentary FORMER World No.1 John Newcombe joins Seven’s commentary team on the 40th anniversary of his back-toback Wimbledon victories. Newcombe’s history at Wimbledon stretches back to 1965 when he won the doubles title with fellow Australian Tony Roche. He and Roche would secure another four doubles titles at the All England Club, and 12 Grand Slam titles in all, more than any other men’s team in tennis history. But it was his three singles victories at Wimbledon in 1967, 1970 and 1971 that made him a household name. With his attacking serve-and-volley game he was also a dual winner of both the Australian and US Opens. Overall, he won 26 Grand Slam major titles in all forms of the games. “I think this is my 50th Wimbledon either as a player or doing television, so for me Wimbledon is like a second home,” Newcombe says. “It’s a very exciting time of year and a great chance to catch up with old friends. It’s always a fascinating tournament over the two weeks.”
