NOTICE: At some time
during Wednesday (probably
between 1-3.45pm) a Volvo
XC90 was damaged in the
bottom car park. The brake
lights were smashed and the
car sustained scratches that
would be consistent with
another 4x4, or other large
vehicle, having driven into
it. All evidence of the broken
lights had been removed
from the area which
someone must have picked
up. However, no note of
explanation was left on the
vehicle. If anyone witnessed
this or has any information
please contact the school
office. A reward is being
offered for information.
Years 7 & 8 Italy Trip
There will be a presentation for parents about the trip on Saturday 11 May at 12 noon in the Dining Hall
Judging from their blog, the sun-tanned and happy group above had a
wonderful time discovering and exploring fascinating ancient sites during
their trip to Italy during the Easter holidays.
Their stay included trips to San Callisto Catacombs, Pompeii, the Naples
Museum, Herculaneum and Rome. Their visit to the volcano, Vesuvius
proved popular (not to mention the authentic Italian gelato and delicious
fresh pizzas!)
“It was really interesting to know that the volcano is active and could erupt.
We also went to Pompeii and we saw the houses they used to live in and the
places they worked. We also saw the plaster moulds of the people who died
in the eruption in 79AD. At the end of the day we went to the beach. The
water was freezing but it was still really fun!” Sian
Miffy’s Travels
The Sapient Spot
It would appear that
broadband coverage in
Somerset does not
extend beyond the
household! Once again
it was only Katie who
came up with answers
to the bumper issue of
three questions which
were offered at Easter. Remember – chocolate is at
issue here!
1. In terms of the way maps are now drawn, why
does the phrase – ‘to orientate oneself’ not really
make sense? – Orient means East and early maps
had east at the top!
2. Given a clock face with the numbers in their usual
positions, draw a line so that the numbers on one
side of the line sum to a total which is twice the total
of the numbers on the other side of the line.- Draw a
line between 10 and 11 to between 2 and 3. One
side of the line sums to 26, the other to 52.
3. Think of three words which are pronounced
differently when the first letter is capitalized?- job,
reading, nice and polish would all have fitted the bill.
Keeping the numbers 1 to 9 in order and
interspersing them with mathematical signs can you
create an expression which totals 100? (Hint –
things like 34 and 89 are acceptable!)
Answers to Mr Wynn in person or by email
(sjw@millfieldprep.com) will be very welcome and
may precipitate even more chocolate than is at stake
on the result of the forthcoming Stoke City v Norwich
football match!
TENNIS
We had a very entertaining Save the Children Doubles Tournament at school during the Pre-
Season day, featuring a couple of very well dressed Clowns. Thank you to everyone who took
part and all the proceeds will be sent to Save the Children.
Could you be going to Wimbledon?
As a result of signing up the
whole school to be British
Tennis Members last
September, Millfield Prep has
been very fortunate to be
allocated 25 pairs of
Wimbledon tickets for this
years’ Championships from 24 June - 7 July. The
tickets are randomly allocated by the LTA, so please
check your emails and if you are lucky, you have to
accept and pay for the tickets within 10 days of the
email. Otherwise the tickets will be allocated to
someone else within the school. Good luck!
As a result of a very busy round of competitions,
Finn is now:
1. No. 1 13 year old in GB LTA ranking
2. No. 3 14 year old in GB LTA ranking
3. Top 25 in Tennis Europe ranking
4. In the Top Ten seasonal ranking for 15 year olds
Incredible achievements for Finn, well done!
U10A Hockey Boys
Mrs Thomas
HOCKEY
The U11 boys were at the Regional Finals on
Tuesday representing Somerset. The boys had
prepared over the break on a very strict diet of
chocolate and resting. Some of the boys had
helped their hockey by playing cricket and
rugby!
The plan was to build up through the day and
peak for the knockout part of the Tournament.
This Our plan U9A got and off B to teams a good celebrate start with a
convincing gold and silver win against their first opponents. We
suffered a break-away goal in the second game
and moved to plan b which was to now go
through the rest of the games without a loss.
This really upped the pressure and the boys
cannot be faulted for their commitment. The
back line was solid and Finlay, Ollie and Jamie
“enjoyed” the responsibility of stopping the
opposition from scoring. Harvey was on great
form and was only partially distracted by his
own reflection a few times!
Max and Max were able to come on in a variety
of positions and helped strengthen the attack
and shore up the defence. (Both boys had not
played hockey before this season and have
worked exceptionally hard to get to the level
they are now at.)
The games were only ten minutes long so it was
always about scoring goals. Our front line did
not disappoint and whilst they were a little rusty
they dug deep and carried on scoring. Will
played more minutes than he has all season and
ran until his ankle gave up (sorry to Mr Beal)
Rory provided great ball for Joe and Scott who
were both deadly.
The boys gave everything they had to reach the
semi-final and had nothing left to give against a
good side from Richard Pate. They therefore
came up short in the semi-final and went out.
Richard Pate were beaten by Dean Close who
had beaten us during the group phase.
The boys drank 15 litres of fluid between them
and two boxes of food! They rested in the shade
between games and were professional
throughout the tournament. The boys are now
easy to spot around campus as the sun was
deceptively strong! (Sun cream for next year.)
Their determination and sporting play was noted
by opponents and the boys can be very proud of
how they represented Millfield Prep.
All the excuses that we lined up about “it was
too close to the holiday” etc, etc, have been
ruined by the U11 girls who went on to win their
tournament.
It is therefore official that girls are better than
boys!
Thanks to the parents who supported during the
season and on the day.
Squad: Harvey, Finlay, Max, Ollie, Will, Jamie,
CRICKET
Tuesday 23 April
The newly-formed Junior
Development team played Somerset
U10 to kick-off the Millfield Prep
season and, in a tense and exciting
match, the county team scraped
home by just one run. Tom topscored
with 20, while Jack Palmer
had bowling figures of 2-9 in his 4
overs.
Wednesday 24 April
An U13A team achieved an
honourable draw against a more
than useful Millfield U14B team. Top
scorer in our total of 143-7 was Jack
with a hard-hitting 31 not out. In
reply, Millfield reached 135-7,
William and David each taking two
wickets.
The U13B team began their season
well with an impressive nine wicket
success against Millfield U14C. Ikey
had a fine all-round match with 3-9
and an unbeaten 39, while Kynon
scored 30.
The U12A side entertained Cardiff &
the Vale of Glamorgan U12 and won
well by 31 runs. Sam was unbeaten
on 47 while Kasey’s 19 and 4-14 was
a fine all-round effort. Billy bowled
his leg-spinners well to take 2-7.
were 10 teams competing which were selected off two
local rounds and a regional final earlier in the year. The
top teams from each region were selected to compete in
the final. It is the swimming equivalent of the football FA
A smart new feed shed has tidied up a corner of
the yard and enabled the field shed to become
‘Hickstead’ housing for two small ponies.
A large pen has been made in the barn for the
very important ‘fruit bowl’ of mini ponies, Mango,
Apple, Plum and Blackberry.
The Headquarters has become the place to be
(possibly because of the crisps and biscuits!) A
fantastic coffee machine has been very kindly
donated by Mr and Mrs Davi. This has been well
received by parents who come to watch their
children ride and by the staff !
Riding numbers have increased. The biggest
difference is in the numbers of full, half and the
new three day liveries. This means that more
children are able to ride more
than once a week. This makes a
huge difference to the speed of
their progress and boosts their
confidence with their ponies
when mounted and when
handling them on the ground.
To encourage more stable
management and improve all
round horsemanship the
stables have been approved as
a Pony Club Centre. Welcome
to the Millfield Prep Pony Club.
This will enable riders to take
internationally recognised Pony
Club tests and achievement
badges. Membership is growing
slowly and the first rallies were
held in this Easter holiday.
Eloise on Sweep
We had a busy competition schedule, starting
with practice show jumping at Senior School and
an in-house competition at Prep before we took
riders to King’s Sedgemore. We won the first two
classes!
Then training began in earnest for the NSEA JWS
(National Schools Equestrian Association Jumping
with Style). Before the riders forum at the end of
Riders during their two day Eventing Clinic under the Tor
half term, we ran a clear round jumping
competition over a JWS style course. A week of
intensive training followed and was rewarded
with some very encouraging performances in the
NSEA competition on home ground. We had a 3rd
placed team in the 75cm class and had individual
1st and 2nd in the 85cm class. Not bad out of 24
school teams! Our novice teams were not so
successful at Taunton School show jumping but
our more experienced riders were well placed in
the bigger classes. We had a somewhat
disappointing trip to Crispin but learnt a lot from
the outing. We finished the term with another
trip to Millfield Senior School to jump a well-built
course away from home.
Dressage has not been forgotten. We held an inhouse
competition during the last week of term.
Many beginner riders had their first attempt at
riding a simple walk and trot test. More
experienced riders rode a preliminary level test.
A great afternoon, which could not have
happened without the support of our parents and
riding staff.
Now the ground has dried up we have been busy
building a mini cross country course so we can
start cross country training this term ready for the
eventing season.
Welcome back Minis, its lovely to see you
all after the Easter holidays!
This week the Minis had a nice time playing
with toys and old pals… Each child also made
a ‘Mini Me’ photo board using photographs
taken from last term – a nice keepsake to
hang on the wall at home!
We had a delicious snack of cheese and
crackers followed by a play outdoors in the
sunshine and of course the children enjoyed
seeing the much loved ‘Booglie Bunny’ for
story time to end our session!
A warm welcome to our
new Mini members:
Winnie, Florence,
Charlie and Finlay (photo
to come!). See you for
Mini Sensory next week.
Welcome back
Minis!
