Millfield Prep Newsletter ● Issue 503 ● 25 April 2013 Page 6 CRICKET Tuesday 23 April The newly-formed Junior Development team played Somerset U10 to kick-off the Millfield Prep season and, in a tense and exciting match, the county team scraped home by just one run. Tom topscored with 20, while Jack Palmer had bowling figures of 2-9 in his 4 overs. Wednesday 24 April An U13A team achieved an honourable draw against a more than useful Millfield U14B team. Top scorer in our total of 143-7 was Jack with a hard-hitting 31 not out. In reply, Millfield reached 135-7, William and David each taking two wickets. The U13B team began their season well with an impressive nine wicket success against Millfield U14C. Ikey had a fine all-round match with 3-9 and an unbeaten 39, while Kynon scored 30. The U12A side entertained Cardiff & the Vale of Glamorgan U12 and won well by 31 runs. Sam was unbeaten on 47 while Kasey’s 19 and 4-14 was a fine all-round effort. Billy bowled his leg-spinners well to take 2-7. Mr Twort Our pupils have been enjoying their riding. See more on Page 7. SWIMMING ROUNDERS National Swimming League Club Final Sunday 21 April 2013, Cardiff Millfield Prep swimmers had a great day out at the 44th National League Final which for the first time was held in Cardiff. Millfield Prep, the only school team competing in the final, were up against large city based clubs. There were 10 teams competing which were selected off two local rounds and a regional final earlier in the year. The top teams from each region were selected to compete in the final. It is the swimming equivalent of the football FA Cup. Congratulations to Fenella for achieving her Cross Country Colours. Wednesday 24 April U11A 18½ - 8½ Perrott Hill U11B 14 - 11 Perrott Hill U13B 4½ - 10½ Perrott Hill U13C 12 - 11½ U13B Perrott Hill U12A 15½ - 5 Hazlegrove U12B 10 - 10½ Hazlegrove U13C 7½ - 7 Hazlegrove U13A v U13B Hazlegrove - won by an innings Millfield Prep swimmers were in fine form with some great personal best times. Well done to the team of: Alice Thomas Nastia Alex Alice Woody Hazza Santos Rosie Oliver Olivia Louis Kitty Joshua Charlie Dan Outstanding Achievements Santos: 1st 50m Freestyle, joint first on the 50m Butterfly. Santos won the top boy in the 11/U age group. National times achieved: Louis 100m Freestyle / Oliver 100m Backstroke 13/U Medley relay winners: Oliver, Joshua, Louis and Charlie School Records: Alice and Thomas in the 50m Backstroke. Zoe achieved her 2nd national qualifying time in the 100m Butterfly Rosie achieved her first National time in the 100m Backstroke In the end Millfield Prep managed to finish in 5th place overall which is a fantastic result for a small school team. Millfield Prep Newsletter ● Issue 503 ● 25 April 2013 Page 7 EQUESTRIAN NEWS Spring Term Round-Up Millfield Prep Stables is buzzing. Lots of exciting changes have been made to the existing facilities. The temporary stables have gone and been replaced by two smart new modern loose boxes in the hay barn. These are known as ‘Cowdray Park’ and are the new home for the Polo ponies. The field shelter beside the dressage arena has been transformed into two cosy pony loose boxes with their own little yard, ‘Gatcombe’. A smart new feed shed has tidied up a corner of the yard and enabled the field shed to become ‘Hickstead’ housing for two small ponies. A large pen has been made in the barn for the very important ‘fruit bowl’ of mini ponies, Mango, Apple, Plum and Blackberry. The Headquarters has become the place to be (possibly because of the crisps and biscuits!) A fantastic coffee machine has been very kindly donated by Mr and Mrs Davi. This has been well received by parents who come to watch their children ride and by the staff ! Riding numbers have increased. The biggest difference is in the numbers of full, half and the new three day liveries. This means that more children are able to ride more than once a week. This makes a huge difference to the speed of their progress and boosts their confidence with their ponies when mounted and when handling them on the ground. To encourage more stable management and improve all round horsemanship the stables have been approved as a Pony Club Centre. Welcome to the Millfield Prep Pony Club. This will enable riders to take internationally recognised Pony Club tests and achievement badges. Membership is growing slowly and the first rallies were held in this Easter holiday. Eloise on Sweep We had a busy competition schedule, starting with practice show jumping at Senior School and an in-house competition at Prep before we took riders to King’s Sedgemore. We won the first two classes! Then training began in earnest for the NSEA JWS (National Schools Equestrian Association Jumping with Style). Before the riders forum at the end of Riders during their two day Eventing Clinic under the Tor half term, we ran a clear round jumping competition over a JWS style course. A week of intensive training followed and was rewarded with some very encouraging performances in the NSEA competition on home ground. We had a 3rd placed team in the 75cm class and had individual 1st and 2nd in the 85cm class. Not bad out of 24 school teams! Our novice teams were not so successful at Taunton School show jumping but our more experienced riders were well placed in the bigger classes. We had a somewhat disappointing trip to Crispin but learnt a lot from the outing. We finished the term with another trip to Millfield Senior School to jump a well-built course away from home. Dressage has not been forgotten. We held an inhouse competition during the last week of term. Many beginner riders had their first attempt at riding a simple walk and trot test. More experienced riders rode a preliminary level test. A great afternoon, which could not have happened without the support of our parents and riding staff. Now the ground has dried up we have been busy building a mini cross country course so we can start cross country training this term ready for the eventing season. Miss Porter Millfield Prep will be at Badminton Visit Millfield Prep and Senior Schools on Stand 94 at Badminton Horse Trials 2-6 May 2013 Parents are welcome to join us for drinks at 3-4pm 2-5 May and 2-3pm 6 May.
