Pre-college: Rising Star <strong>and</strong> <strong>SCAD</strong><br />

Summer Seminars Assistant<br />

Pre-college: Rising Star <strong>and</strong> <strong>SCAD</strong> Summer Seminars<br />

are summer programs for high school <strong>student</strong>s <strong>of</strong>fered<br />

through the admission department. Applicants may<br />

indicate their program <strong>of</strong> choice but will be considered<br />

for both. Summer Seminars assistants will also work the<br />

<strong>Art</strong> Educators' Forum: Summer Conference, a one-week<br />

residential program for educators.<br />

What is pre-college: Rising Star?<br />

This five-week residential program in <strong>Savannah</strong> <strong>of</strong>fers<br />

rising high school seniors a real college experience. Taught<br />

by <strong>SCAD</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essors, the courses are challenging. Students<br />

who successfully complete the Pre-college: Rising Star<br />

program earn college credit, which may be applied toward<br />

a bachelor's degree at <strong>SCAD</strong> or at other colleges or<br />

universities (course credits are applied to degree<br />

requirements at the discretion <strong>of</strong> the accepting<br />

institution). Pre-college: Rising Star <strong>student</strong>s have the<br />

opportunity to advance their knowledge <strong>and</strong> preparation<br />

toward a degree <strong>and</strong> career in the arts. Outside class,<br />

<strong>student</strong>s complete assignments, take field trips,<br />

socialize, <strong>and</strong> enjoy the parks <strong>and</strong> other local attractions.<br />

What are <strong>SCAD</strong> Summer Seminars?<br />

<strong>SCAD</strong> Summer Seminars are residential summer<br />

workshops designed for high school <strong>student</strong>s who have<br />

completed their freshman, sophomore or junior years.<br />

Students take two separate workshops over the course<br />

<strong>of</strong> the week. Outside <strong>of</strong> class times, <strong>student</strong>s participate<br />

in activities <strong>and</strong> social events on <strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong>f campus. SSAs<br />

will also work the one week <strong>SCAD</strong> Educator Essentials<br />

Conference (SEEC).<br />

Student Ambassador<br />

<strong>SCAD</strong> <strong>student</strong> ambassadors are a select group <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>student</strong>s who serve as representatives <strong>of</strong> the<br />

university. Acting through the admission department<br />

in tailored <strong>leadership</strong> roles, ambassadors forge<br />

connections with the community, prospective<br />

<strong>student</strong>s <strong>and</strong> titans <strong>of</strong> art <strong>and</strong> design. Ambassadors<br />

have visited more than 300 schools across the world<br />

<strong>and</strong> hosted more than 5,000 prospective <strong>student</strong>s in<br />

the last four years.<br />

Ambassadors enjoy perks such as early residence<br />

hall move-in, eligibility for <strong>student</strong> <strong>leadership</strong> awards,<br />

an extensive network <strong>of</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essional contacts,<br />

exclusive retreats, events <strong>and</strong> workshops, <strong>and</strong><br />

national conferences.<br />

The award-winning program’s alumni include <strong>SCAD</strong><br />

valedictorians <strong>and</strong> salutatorians, <strong>and</strong> many are<br />

working for companies like DreamWorks, Pixar <strong>and</strong><br />

Anthropologie. Ambassadors emerge with outst<strong>and</strong>ing<br />

networking <strong>and</strong> <strong>leadership</strong> skills <strong>and</strong> are poised to<br />

achieve success as creative pr<strong>of</strong>essionals.<br />

<strong>student</strong> <strong>leadership</strong><br />

Ambassadors are led by their adviser <strong>and</strong> a team<br />

<strong>of</strong> coordinators. Coordinator positions within the<br />

<strong>student</strong> ambassador program are designed to allow<br />

<strong>student</strong>s the opportunity to develop managerial skills<br />

with the emphasis on project completion while working<br />

in a pr<strong>of</strong>essional environment. Student ambassadors<br />

the buzz bus<br />

The Buzz Bus is a community outreach initiative that is<br />

organized <strong>and</strong> facilitated via the ambassador program.<br />

Local schools in need are targeted <strong>and</strong> are surprised<br />

by an ambush-style visit that typically includes the<br />

<strong>SCAD</strong> Drumline, performance ensemble <strong>and</strong> a large<br />

donation <strong>of</strong> art supplies, books <strong>and</strong> more.<br />

call-a-thons<br />

From time to time, <strong>student</strong> ambassadors meet for<br />

call-a-thons as a way <strong>of</strong> extending a friendly "hello" to<br />

prospective <strong>student</strong>s. Call-a-thons are usually in the<br />

evening, <strong>and</strong> there is always food. Ambassadors are<br />

trained on telephone etiquette <strong>and</strong> are provided a script.<br />

volunteers<br />

Ambassadors assist with college <strong>and</strong> community events,<br />

like <strong>SCAD</strong> Days <strong>and</strong> the Scholarship Gala; together, they<br />

volunteer more than 6,000 hours annually. Student<br />

ambassadors are afforded exclusive opportunities to<br />

network with VIPs, intern with top companies <strong>and</strong><br />

participate in <strong>SCAD</strong> signature events such as the Film<br />

Festival <strong>and</strong> Fashion Show. In this capacity, ambassadors<br />

<strong>of</strong>ten mingle with VIPs <strong>and</strong> special guests.<br />

Through this program, visiting prospective <strong>student</strong>s<br />

have opportunities to attend class, have lunch or<br />

correspond by email, phone or Skype with an ambassador.<br />

When prospective <strong>student</strong>s contact admission with a<br />

classroom visit request, the admission department makes<br />

arrangements for ambassadors to meet guests based<br />

on major areas <strong>of</strong> interest.<br />

educator weekends<br />

Throughout the year, admission hosts educators from<br />

high schools <strong>and</strong> colleges from around the nation <strong>and</strong><br />

the world for a weekend. These guests take tours,<br />

attend workshops <strong>and</strong> have meals in local restaurants.<br />

Ambassadors accompany them throughout the<br />

weekend events <strong>and</strong> give educators the opportunity<br />

to interact with <strong>SCAD</strong> <strong>student</strong>s.<br />

hometown heroes<br />

During academic breaks, <strong>student</strong>s are encouraged to<br />

visit their former high schools or colleges to represent<br />

<strong>SCAD</strong> for a day. Hometown Hero training takes place in<br />

October <strong>and</strong> November <strong>and</strong> includes presentation tips,<br />

materials <strong>and</strong> giveaways for visits. Ambassadors may<br />

also assist with admission information sessions in their<br />

hometown over breaks.<br />

The admission department hosts workshops for high<br />

school <strong>student</strong>s <strong>and</strong> other community members with<br />

which the ambassadors may be asked to help.<br />

Ambassadors participate in online chats allowing<br />

prospective <strong>student</strong>s to ask question about <strong>student</strong> life.<br />

<strong>SCAD</strong> Days, Grad Days <strong>and</strong> Accepted Student Days<br />

are examples <strong>of</strong> <strong>SCAD</strong>’s visitation days hosted by<br />

the admission department to welcome hundreds <strong>of</strong><br />

prospective <strong>student</strong>s <strong>and</strong> their families. During these<br />

events, ambassadors serve as tour guides, hosts <strong>and</strong><br />

panelists, escorts <strong>and</strong> share their own <strong>SCAD</strong> experiences.<br />

Every quarter the admission department hosts a<br />

reception for new <strong>student</strong>s who have transferred from<br />

another university or community college to <strong>SCAD</strong>.<br />

Ambassadors, especially those who were transfer<br />

<strong>student</strong>s themselves, are invited to attend these events<br />

to <strong>of</strong>fer the new <strong>student</strong>s a warm welcome.<br />

elementary <strong>and</strong> middle schools to share their work,<br />

CAPP Assistant<br />

The Cultural <strong>and</strong> Academic Preparation Program is a<br />

four week pre-orientation summer program for new<br />

international <strong>SCAD</strong> <strong>student</strong>s held during the month<br />

<strong>of</strong> August. CAPP <strong>of</strong>fers instruction in English as a<br />

second language <strong>and</strong> an introduction to life in the<br />

United States, <strong>Savannah</strong> <strong>and</strong> especially <strong>SCAD</strong>.<br />

CAPP assistants serve as an ambassador <strong>and</strong><br />

resource for the cultural component <strong>of</strong> the program.<br />

They assist with afternoon workshops <strong>and</strong> as well as<br />

evening <strong>and</strong> weekend activities <strong>and</strong> excursions as<br />

needed. They also assist with managing social media<br />

related to CAPP <strong>and</strong> the CAPP Buddy program which<br />

connects current <strong>SCAD</strong> <strong>student</strong>s with CAPP<br />

participants.<br />

Remuneration<br />
