An Annual Report of Our Stewardship
VOLUME12 NUMBER 2 JULY 2007
The occurrence of our Ninetieth Anniversary is an occasion for reflection on gratitude – gratitude to all
those people who, through the decades, have created and nurtured a place committed to the welfare of teenagers
and their growth spiritually, academically, socially, and physically. Throughout its history, Saint Mary's has
been blessed with dedicated teachers and visionary administrators, has attracted students from the broadest
segments of our community, and has benefited from an intensely loyal alumni group.
This issue seeks in some small way to express our gratitude for the many ways in which people have
lent their support to Saint Mary's in time, talent, and resources. We also seek to bring you up to date on some of
the events of the past year, which exemplify the continuing richness of the Saint Mary's experience. Finally, we
continue our efforts to serve our alumni with news and items of interest to our graduates.
Mandatory Drug Testing
A key component of stewardship is the proper balance between the protection of the core strengths of the school and the
expansion of the capabilities of the school at the margin. The back page of this issue describes one way in which Saint Mary's is
expanding its capabilities, by implementing a mandatory random drug testing program that we hope will deter use of drugs and
alcohol by our students. [We have also implemented a program that will lead to nutrition and wellness improvements for our students.]
We realize we cannot control the actions of our students but we can take steps that favorably influence their decision-making.
Financial Report
Financial health is an essential part of the school's mission and an important aspect of stewardship. This issue sets out for the
first time in many years a financial report on Saint Mary's. See page 2. Some of you may be surprised at the size of our enterprise.
Recent years have seen consistently sound results from operations, while at the same time making much needed improvements to our
physical plant, which is now nearly 20 years old.
Academic Communications
Academic life is always advanced by parent involvement in the education process and by student awareness of academic
progress. Last year saw the introduction of K-12 Planet, an internet service that allows parents to follow a child's progress in each
class on a "real time" basis, greatly expanding communications beyond the traditional progress reports. With parent approval, this
program is available to students, greatly reducing surprises. Again, protecting the core but expanding the margin.
Vibrant Student Life
This issue explores some of the ways our students experienced growth, whether academically, athletically, spiritually, or
socially. Within our community students are honored for their contribution to our liturgical life, our love of the arts, and service to
others. Student life remains vibrant. For a glimpse of many aspects of student life, see the Picture Gallery at www.smknights.org.
Invitation to Participate
Support from alumni, families, and friends are the lifeblood of any school. This issue serves to thank the many people who
have sustained Saint Mary's this year. We invite all of you to participate in future school events and recapture the spirit of Saint
Mary's. To our alumni, we want to emphasize that Saint Mary's remains your school and can benefit from your time and talent.
"Forward Saint Mary's"
The Virginia G. Piper Education Center is nearing completion and we hope to take occupancy in September, 2007. This is a
major step forward for Saint Mary's and is a fitting anchor around which we can move toward our Centennial Celebration in 2017.
Page 3 sets out a complete discussion of the current status of the project.
Personally, I want to thank all of you for allowing me to be of service to the Saint Mary's community for the past three years.
Every attempt has been made to create a complete and accurate list of contributors. Contributions
reported include those received between July 1, 2006 and May 31, 2007. If your name has been
inadvertently omitted on any of our lists, please accept our apologies and call Bridget Costello in the
Development Office at (602) 251-2508 or by email at bcostello@smknights.org
Editors Note: Please notify us of any change in address. Parents, please update the address of your children. We look forward to
receipt of more news on our graduates as well the various reunions. As always, we welcome news on weddings, births, and
accomplishments. The Knightline is published twice a year, in January and July. Submissions can be sent to the editor, Tom Reilly, at
treilly@smknights.org or via mail at the school address: 2525 North Third Street, Phoenix, AZ 85004.
SAINT MARY'S FINANCIAL REPORT
We present our financial position as a comparison of our operating budget for the past school year and the upcoming school year. Our
2006/2007 actual numbers will be very close to the budgeted numbers but are not yet finalized. We believe the comparison of budget
numbers is an appropriate measure of out financial performance. Revenues and expenditures relating to the Virginia G. Piper
Education Center are not included in these numbers. The following page has some commentary on these financial reports.
2
SAINT MARY'S FINANCIAL REPORT: A COMMENTARY
"Tuition & Fees" remain by far the largest source of revenues. This figure does NOT include financial aid to our families, which
is carried as a separate revenue item, "Scholarship Revenues." The combination of these two items remains between 84% and 85% of
total revenues. Our operations are heavily dependent on enrollment and our reliance on scholarship revenues is a critical factor in our
ability to grow enrollment.
In one sense, Saint Mary's is engaged in several lines of business. We expect our Food Services operation to be self-supporting
and our Bookstore operation to be nearly so. Our Athletic program is conducted within restraints that recognize the strong educational
component contained within this activity and the contribution it makes to enrollment.
"Instruction" is the dominate expense item. Although Instruction as a percentage of total expense is budgeted to decrease, in fact,
year over year, Instruction is budgeted to increase substantially in actual dollar amounts. The divergence is caused by the large
increase in "Maintenance and Plant Operations" and "Depreciation," caused by the inclusion of the Virginia G. Piper Education Center
in our operating budget for the first time.
Our salary scales are set by the Diocese and are uniform throughout the Diocesan school system. Payroll and payroll related items
account for 65% of our annual operating expense and are present in varying degrees in each budget category.
CAPITAL CAMPAIGN – PHASE 2
Status of the Project
In May, 2006, the Diocese authorized Saint Mary’s to begin construction of the Virginia G. Piper Education Center, with the
understanding that the project would remain a shell until additional funds had been raised or pledged. Firm bids were limited to this
scope of the project. In January, 2007, the Diocese authorized a loan to Saint Mary's that would allow the full completion of the
Education Center and we are now performing the additional work to bring the project to completion. We estimate that this new loan
will be in the range of $1.6 million, depending on final project bids and additional Capital Campaign receipts, and be repayable, both
principal and interest, over a 10-year period.
Why We Need Your Help
While the diocesan loan decision is very good news, assuring project completion, the additional debt service will negatively
impact the school's operating budget. The loan is an unplanned substitute for the funding that would have been provided by a timely
receipt of expected Capital Campaign contributions. Without additional equity contributions, our tuition rates will increase in a
manner that might place in jeopardy our historic mission to bring Catholic education to every segment of our community.
As we head toward our Centennial Celebration, we once again rely on our alums and benefactors to respond to this very real
need for more equity for our plant and facilities and reduce our reliance on loans. We also need help from outside our community from
people who respect our ability to create leadership among underrepresented community groups, with more than 90% of our very
diverse student body continuing with education after graduation from Saint Mary's.
Why Is It Always About Money?
Answer: It isn’t about money. It's about kids. Good kids. Ambitious kids. All kinds of kids. Some come from comfortable
families. Others come from struggling families. Many cultures are represented here. Christ is the reason for this school and all who
come here share in His love for His children. This Capital Campaign is all about our ability to continue to make a difference in the
lives of teenagers of all kinds. We have been there for generations of children, posting 90 years of service to God, Country and Home.
We hope to be there for future generations. Please be generous.
Some History
Saint Mary’s moved to its present location in 1988, to make way for the Arizona Center. Initially the school functioned
without a cafeteria, science labs, a library, a chapel, a gymnasium, or an auditorium. A capital drive (and increased debt) brought a
much-needed multi-purpose building to the campus in 1990, adding a cafeteria, basic science labs, additional classrooms, a library,
and a chapel. Still later, in 1992, in what can only be described as a “barn raising” exercise, Saint Mary’s added a gymnasium, using
volunteer labor and mostly recycled components, including the steel frame, the floor, the bleachers, and a host of accessories.
Despite these improvements, Saint Mary’s remains incomplete. The school lacks an auditorium for larger group meetings and
public performances. The school’s art rooms are two regular classrooms with few additional features. Both the drama and music
classes meet in basic classrooms carved out of one end of the cafeteria. Dance classes meet in the snack bar overlooking the gym
floor. The computer labs, once state of the art, now are in need of rejuvenation.
Saint Mary’s commenced a new Capital Campaign ("Forward Saint Mary's") to solve its facility deficiencies and move into
the 21st Century. The Virginia G. Piper Education Center will solve most of the deficiencies in our facilities. It will have more than
35,000 square feet of space, divided among a lower level and two above-ground levels. The lower level will be home to a fine arts
department, with an art studio, an art classroom, a music studio, a band studio, and the stage level for a 250-person auditorium. The
ground floor level will have three classrooms, a teacher’s lounge and workroom, and seating ramping down to the auditorium stage.
The second floor will house four classrooms and three computer classrooms.
Lady Knights -- 5A-1 Softball Champs
Note: For pictures of our softball team, visit "Picture Gallery" at www.smknights.org
On May 11, 2007, after seven innings of
scoreless softball, the Lady Knights pushed across two
runs in the eighth inning to clinch the 5A-1 State
Championship. Saint Mary's finished the season at 29-
8. It was a great year, and a memorable one for our
students and our entire community. The girls played
with spirit and sportsmanship. This is the first softball
championship in the school's history.
Both the Arizona Republic and the East
Valley Tribune named freshman pitcher Dallas
Escobedo as the Player of the Year. She finished with
a 27-8 record, a 0.73 ERA and 501 strikeouts in 260
innings. She pitched a perfect game, four no-hitters,
and nine one-hitters. She hit .357 with eight home runs
and 33 RBIs. She also stole 14 bases. As dominating
as Dallas was throughout the year, her teammates fully
share the team's triumph with timely hitting and strong
play in the field.
Basketball: Great Year for Saint Mary's, Great Career for Jerryd Bayless
Led by McDonald's All-American Jerryd Bayless, the Knights
enjoyed a story-book season, with extensive travel throughout the United
States and the chance to play some of the finest teams in the country.
Coach Lopez knew his young team was progressing, despite the won/loss
record in the earlier part of the season. His confidence was justified, as the
Knights caught fire after the Christmas Break, posting an 8-2 record
against Arizona foes and winning the Desert Region Tournament. The
Knights then continued their hot streak in the 5A-1 playoffs, defeating
Dobson and top-ranked Desert Vista before falling to a very strong
Mountain View team in the Championship game.
Although Saint Mary's prizes team play above individual
performance, we were blessed for the last four years with the opportunity
to watch a very gifted athlete perform at the highest level, game after
game. Articulate and soft-spoken in any interview, and composed and
disciplined on the court, Jerryd Bayless handled the burden of fame with
class and served as a terrific representative for his school. He left holding
the school record for points (2,828), the AIA Class 5A career scoring
record points per game (28.3), and was two-time Player of the Year.
Dallas Escobedo and Jerryd Bayless
"Our Town" Dazzles Audiences
Once again the Drama Club, under the direction of drama teacher Nick D'Arcangelo and with set support from stagecraft
teacher Cher Norville, produced a winning performance of Thorton Wilder's classic play about life in America. Our Town is the story
of each of us "in our growing up and in our marrying, and in our living, and in our dying." Because it reaches deep into the heart of
American life, it continues to stay alive among us despite the passage of almost 70 years. As New York critic Walter Kerr once said
about a 1969 revival, "You'll be surprised how much younger it is than you are." The cast and crew brought Wilder's characters to life
in a special way, to the great satisfaction of four audiences.
The Harmony Dance Troupe
Dance is alive and well at Saint Mary's. Our change to a sevenperiod
school day expanded elective offerings considerably. The
2006/2007 school year saw a master schedule with four sections
of dance at three different levels; these offering will be available
again this upcoming year. As a part of this enhancement to our
dance program, Saint Mary's has formed a dance troupe (the
Harmony Dancers) that performs at various school functions
throughout the year.
A Lenten Gift: Living Stations of the Cross
On Easter Tuesday, our entire community gathered in the
gymnasium for the Living Stations of the Cross. Students and
two faculty members portrayed participants in the Passion. In a
darkened gymnasium, each Station was presented, then each
actor froze in place, within a spotlight, while readings and music
expanded on the meaning of the Station. Directed by Campus
Minister Michael Garibaldi, the one-hour event kept the audience
"frozen in place" as well.
Student Council Easter Basket Drive
For the two months preceding Easter, Student Council was busy collecting items for the Easter Basket Drive coordinated by St. Vincent
de Paul. This project gives underprivileged kids a little bit of joy on Easter, and Student Council was very happy to participate. The
students and staff responded tremendously, producing approximately 650 Easter baskets, a huge increase over last year's 255 baskets.
Although most baskets were picked up by St. Vincent de Paul to be delivered to various schools and agencies in the Valley, a sizeable
number were delivered to Saint Matthew's Grade School as a part of an Easter Egg Hunt sponsored by Student Council. This
worthwhile cause seems destined to be a permanent feature of the school's Easter celebrations, combining service to others with the fun
aspects of bringing some joy to young people.
CLASS OF 2007
COLLEGE CHOICES
The 167 members of the Class of 2007 pursued a wide range of opportunities for “life after Saint Mary’s”. 80 seniors [48%]
applied to and were accepted to 24 Colleges and Universities. Forty-two have enrolled at Arizona State University at Main, East and
West campuses; fifteen at Northern Arizona University; eleven at the University of Arizona; and twelve at Colleges and Universities
outside of Arizona.
Seventy-eight seniors have enrolled in thirteen community colleges. Nine seniors will move to technical schools, the military
or the workforce.
The table below reflects the Colleges and Universities that accepted our seniors. The number after a school name indicates
the number of seniors intending to enroll at that school in the fall of 2007.
allows funds for scholarships and support of the Saint Mary’s golf teams. This year, three seniors received a $2,000 scholarship to assist them in
Saint Marys 2007 “Knights of the Roundtable” Dinner and Auction
Saint Mary’s High School honored over 25 Outstanding Knights from over 10 different categories and inducted three new
Honorees into their Hall of Fame on April 28. Those honored were Jim Sanford - Outstanding Administrator ('61), David Mitchell -
Outstanding Athlete ('76), and NBA Hall of Fame Official, Tommy Nuñez, Sr. (Attended 1952-54) - Outstanding Humanitarian.
Roger Downey, presided as Master of Ceremonies for over 465 guests at the Wyndham Phoenix Hotel. Tickets ranged from
$100 to $500. Ryan Kealy (‘98) was the top sponsor of the event donating $10,000 in sponsorships. D.L. Withers also sponsored
$5,000 to the night’s proceeds. This year’s event was co-chaired by parents Roberta Owens and Cyndi Field Durkee (‘73).
Irish band “Meadowlark” performed during the silent auction while people bid on trips to Hawaii and California. Other prizes
included a Muhammad Ali autographed boxing glove, jewelry, jet skis, Yamaha Rhino 4 x 4 and $500 cash, all in celebration of Saint
Mary’s 90th year. Several flautists played during the private cocktail reception held exclusively for the honorees hosted by Inter-tech
Orthopedics.
The grand ballroom at the Wyndham Phoenix was packed and was elegantly set for the alumni, faculty, and corporate
sponsors. Dressed in their finest tux, St. Mary’s Junior and Senior student athletes were very involved as they hosted each table as
captains for the evening. Kevin Finley and Amy Povinelli, St. Mary’s Co-Student Body Presidents, graced the stage in prom attire as
they made personal pleas to the guests to make pledges to the Fr. Blaise Scholarship Fund. ”Honor our Hall of Fame and Fr. Blaise by
helping a financially struggling student.” they asked. The award presentation was very touching. “When the inductees spoke, you
could hear a pin drop – it was very moving, said Michelle McShane, the wife of Scholarship and Benefit Board President, Barney
McShane.
Saint Marys Fourth Annual Fashion Show - Great Success
Many Alumni Classes Represented At Event
On February 10th, at the Wyndham Phoenix Hotel, Saint Mary’s hosted its Fourth Annual Fashion Show, “Knights of the
Future”. The event was co-chaired by Helen Condit and Agnes Lawson. The afternoon was a tremendous success with over 150
models participating and 565 guests in attendance. Leonilla Johnston, graduate of 1925, was one of the honored guests in attendance.
The models included current Saint Mary’s students and alumni representing multi-generational alumni families such as the
Rideau family, (that boast over 50 SM graduates spanning four generations), the Fahrendorf family, the Mitchell/Richey family, the
Trujillo family, the Uribe family, the Losada family, the Jordan family, the Speier family, the Nunez family, the Cunningham &
Hurley families, the Bolley family, the Wischer family and the Sweeney family.
Messrs. William Herman, Lou LaScala and Bill Lehman, former principals of Saint Mary’s, modeled Resort and Leisure
wear from Dillard’s.
In addition to current students and alumni, over 40 “Future Knights”, siblings and family members of current students and
alumni families, also participated in the show.
The show featured fashions from Dillard’s, Azteca Bridal Plaza, Nikki Nice, Brides by Demetrios, Hush Hush & Junky
Trunk. The fashions were stunning and beautifully modeled by the SM community. Stylists from Uzuri Salon, Molli Cody – The Hair
Studio and Leidan Mitchell Salon created exquisite hair and make up designs.
The afternoon also featured a silent auction and live auction that helped to raise over $35,000. In addition, the afternoon
featured a gourmet luncheon and performances from the Saint Mary’s Band, Choir, Harmony Dance team, Boys Hip Hop Dance team
and the Saint Mary’s Drum Line.
A fabulous time was had by all. Plans are underway for the Fifth Annual Fashion Show that will be held on February 9, 2008
at the Wyndham Phoenix Hotel.
THE NEW CORPORATE TAX CREDIT: A NEW COST-FREE WAY TO HELP
The Arizona Legislature has enacted into law a provision that grants a tax
credit to corporations for contributions to organizations like the Catholic Tuition
Organization of the Diocese of Phoenix (CTODP). This is a credit, not simply a
deduction. There is no maximum amount that a corporation can contribute, but the
state program was capped at $10 million for fiscal year 2006-2007. Each year, for the
five years of the program, the cap will increase by 20% until fiscal year 2010-2011,
when it will reach nearly $21 million! A corporation may carry any unused tax credit
forward for five years.
If you, or someone you know, is a decision maker at a corporation
willing to help families desiring a choice in education for their children,
contact the school's Development Office at 602-251-2508.
"A corporation may obtain
a dollar-for-dollar tax
credit for its contribution
up to the amount of its
Arizona state income tax
liability."
The 2007/2008 school year is the first year funding from this source was available to people filing CTODP
financial aid applications. Under the corporate tax credit law, CTODP may make grants from corporate
contributions only to students transferring to a Catholic school from a public school. CTODP has allocated more
than $137,000 to our families from this new source of financial aid.
CTODP GREATLY BENEFITS SAINT MARY'S – PLEASE SUPPORT CTODP
CTODP is the largest single support for the Saint Mary's financial aid program. For the 2007/2008 school
year, through the generosity of individual donors, CTODP has made more than one million dollars available to our
families, helping more than 400 students. This is an increase of more than $150,000 from the prior year. We thank
everyone who has supported CTODP, especially those who have designated Saint Mary's as the school to benefit
from your generosity.
For the 2007 calendar year, the maximum credit for married couples will be $1,000, and for single
taxpayers the maximum credit will be $500. A contribution to CTODP is one of the best “investments” you can
make. You can receive a dollar for dollar tax credit when you file your Arizona income tax return and also claim a
deduction on your federal income tax return. So, it costs you nothing to participate. You can actually make money
through this program.
SCHOLARSHIP & BENEFITS BOARD
The Saint Mary’s Scholarship and Benefits Board was founded in 1984 to provide a foundation to assist Saint Mary’s High School.
The role of the Scholarship and Benefits Board is to acquire and raise funds to provide tuition assistance to students with a
demonstrated financial need, to provide funding for capital improvements, and to assist the faculty and staff while maintaining the
school’s rich tradition and history. The following programs are maintained by the Saint Mary’s Scholarship & Benefits Board to help
provide tuition assistance for the students of Saint Mary’s.
THE POSSE PROGRAM 2006-2007
A Partnership of Students, Sponsors & Educators Helping Those With Most Need
Started in 1995, this program recognized that students with the greatest need required special help to make the Saint Mary’s
experience a reality. POSSE sponsors help provide financial assistance to such a student for a 3 or 4-year period and have the
opportunity to provide encouragement and inspiration throughout the year. Recipients are selected as a part of the school’s overall
financial aid program. POSSE sponsors can choose from among a number of different annual gift levels, ranging from $500 to full
tuition amounts; several sponsors fund multiple POSSE students. Thanks to our POSSE sponsors for the 2006/2007 school year.
Notable Notes
Tiffany Nagel ('97) was a contestant on Fox Network's "Hell's Kitchen"
reality TV show. Early in the show, two contestants are asked to rate
Tiffany for cooking the seafood perfectly. Melissa is asked to nominate
two contestants for elimination and she chooses Joanna and Tiffany.
Tiffany tells Chef Ramsay that she is capable of doing better than what
occurred during service. The network's website: "Joanna sells Tiffany
down the river." Chef Ramsay eliminates Tiffany. Tiffany's parting
line: “I had no idea it would be this intense." [Editor's Note: Since the
contest is for $1 million, eliminating the strongest contestants is a part
of the game.]
New Knight Bar-B-Que Restaurant
The Rideau family has been a part of Saint Mary's for
four generations. More than 50 Rideaus have graduated from
Saint Mary's. Charlie Rideau ('56) and his son Chris Rideau
('79) have opened a new restaurant – TOWN TALK II. The
Rideaus now hold court at 3509 North 19th Avenue, just north
of Osborn Road. Party catering available. (602-234-4745)
Burleigh Rideau, Sr., moved to Phoenix from the tiny
town of Rideau, Louisiana in 1923. In 1949, Burleigh opened
the original Town Talk Barbeque, near 12th Street and
Washington. The unique blend of meats, slow cooked over
mesquite wood, with his own special sauce, provided flavorful
meals with a special taste. That same great taste -- with a perfect
blend of meats and sauce – has been reborn and you can find it
at Town Talk II.
Our Random Drug Testing Program (2007/2008)
Saint Mary’s is committed to the health, safety, and welfare of its students and to creation of an environment in which its
students can grow in mind, body, and spirit. Our Catholic identity, embodied in our mission statement, requires us to promote a
healthy, drug-free lifestyle. Drug and alcohol abuse among teens can have devastating consequences. The broader community beyond
our campus and outside our homes is full of false promises to our youth, most obviously with respect to alcohol and to a lesser, but
notable, extent with respect to drugs.
Teenagers tend to think that life’s great tragedies cannot possibly apply to them, and they are susceptible to experimentation.
Despite our country’s best efforts, the educational component in fighting substance abuse has revealed its limitations. We have
decided to carry the fight in a different manner.
Saint Mary’s has developed a mandatory random drug testing program as a means of deterring drug and alcohol use by its
students, effective for the 2007/2008 school year. This program was not implemented in response to any widespread substance abuse
problem on our campus, nor is it intended to focus on any particular student or student group. We are not the only Diocesan high
school with such a policy. Our aim is prevention, not punishment.
Students will be chosen randomly using a random selection numbering system. If a student tests positive, the student, with
parent assistance, will need to set-up an evaluation appointment with a trained adolescent alcohol and drugs counselor. The SMHS
Personal Counselor will be granted permission to communicate with the counselors. The student and his/her parents/guardians must be
willing to abide by the recommendations in the evaluation. The student will be required to submit to testing at the discretion of the
SMHS administration for the remainder of his/her tenure at Saint Mary’s.
Saint Marys Announces Changes In Office of Development Director
S
Pat Farrell, former Development Director, has elected to return to a more student-oriented role with the school. Pat will
continue to be involved with the Virginia G. Piper Education Center until that project is brought to a completion. “In agreeing to
tackle the job of Development Director, Pat once again stepped forward to serve the community that has benefited so greatly from his
talents and skills,” said Principal Mark Mauro.
AA Chance To Be a Part of History . . . Saint Marys Commemorative Brick Project
Alumni and friends will soon be given the opportunity to reserve a permanent place in the history of Saint Mary's by buying
a personalized brick to be placed in the entrance of The Virginia G. Piper Education Center. The first phase of this project is well
underway. We have offered commemorative bricks to donors that already have made a donation or pledge of $1,000 or more to the
Capital Campaign. In the future we hope to expand this project to future donors who donate or pledge $1,000 to the Capital Campaign.
This project will allow a person to purchase a commemorative brick personally or as a gift for a child, a friend, a company, or perhaps
just someone you’ve always admired for whom you wish to do something special. Keep an eye out for information on this unique
opportunity to be a permanent part of the history of Saint Mary’s.
