As You Read This, Pray for A Cure
Few of us have been spared knowing a loved one or close friend who has battled breast cancer.
These battles are intense and, while remission is increasingly a welcome outcome, the disease claims the
lives of many women each year. Many of us have felt utterly helpless when a loved one informs us of the
diagnosis, but each of us has the opportunity to join with millions of others, men and women, in raising the
funds necessary to end this scourge among us. If you have an opportunity to participate in any of the many,
many events occurring in October that are designed to help defeat breast cancer, whether by prevention or
treatment, please do so.
The pink ribbon has become the symbol for breast cancer awareness. The pink ribbon first made its appearance as an item
worn by every participant in a fund raising event in New York City in 1991. Now, almost twenty years later, the pink ribbon has
become a part of our culture, delivering a message summarized by Pink Ribbon Inc. as follows:
The brightness of pink stands for hope and strength of each individual to fight its personal fight. It stands for the
community making this personal fight a community responsibility. It stands for all the efforts of people - fundraisers,
medical staff, researchers, students, and volunteers worldwide - working together to find the cure. It stands for the
industry proving its mature responsibility towards manufacturing processes, ingredients, and products. It stands for equal
fundamental rights for all breast cancer survivors whether born in richness or in poverty anywhere on mother earth.
Perhaps you might join ranks with your neighbors by wearing a pink ribbon at some point during October. Perhaps you might
join the thousands of women each year who take positive steps to screen for the disease through a trained health professional; early
detection is a significant factor in successful treatment. Perhaps you begin each day with a prayer of intercession, praying for all those
suffering from breast cancer, both the victim and her family and friends, and praying for inspiration for all those seeking a cure.

Saint Mary’s High School and the Scholarship & Benefit
Fund Board Announce New Development Team
Separately incorporated, Saint Mary’s High School and the Scholarship
and Benefit Board have joined together to bring new faces and new energy to our
community’s development efforts. Pictured at left are Ms. Angie Bayless and
Mr. Aaron Muth (Class of 2000), who arrived on campus toward the end of
September. They will be assisted by Weijia Gao, who worked with Karen
Mankoski before her resignation in mid-summer.
Ms. Bayless holds a Bachelor of Arts in English from Georgetown
University. For a number of years she served as a Special Assistant in the Office
of the Governor, primarily engaged in policy initiatives affecting Arizona’s
relationship with Mexico. Subsequently she started, developed and sold a
successful small business while tending to her two small children. A skilled
writer and speaker, she brings significant strategic planning and marketing experience and energy to our community.
Mr. Muth is a Knight through and through, as can be seen by the color of the shirt he wears in the picture. He holds a
Bachelors of Science in Organizational Leadership from Fort Hays State University in Kansas and an MBA in Global Business from
the University of Dallas. Since 2005 he has been Sports Tourism & Development Manager for the Mesa Convention & Visitors
Bureau. In that capacity he has established working relationships with numerous hospitality leaders, business leaders, and national
sports directors and organizers. His love and respect for Saint Mary’s is evident and we welcome him back home.

OCTOBER 2010
REDIRECT YOUR ARIZONA INCOME TAX
DOLLARS TO HELP SM FAMILIES WITH
TUITION – AT NO COST TO YOU
NEW DEADLINE: APRIL 15, 2011
Arizona taxpayers may redirect up to $1,000 of state income taxes
to benefit a student at Saint Mary's. Married couples may claim a
maximum income tax credit of $1,000 and single taxpayers may claim a
maximum credit of $500. Payments to the Catholic Tuition Organization of
the Diocese of Phoenix (CTODP) qualify for this special tax treatment.
A change in the law now allows you to prepare your tax return
before redirecting your taxes to CTODP. Simply write a check to CTODP
prior to April 15, 2011. You can designate Saint Mary's by indicating on
the memo line of your check "St. Mary's High School" and your funds will
be allocated to families with students at Saint Mary's. Mail your check to:
CTODP, 2025 North Third Street #165, Phoenix, AZ 85004.
Taxpayers may also claim a federal and State charitable deduction
for payments to CTODP. Payments before December 31 qualify for a
2010 deduction; payments between January 1 and April 15 qualify for a
2011 deduction. Therefore, contributions to CTODP will cost you nothing
and may actually provide a net benefit to the taxpayer by claiming both a
dollar-for-dollar income tax credit and a charitable deduction. You can
actually make money through this program.
CTODP is the largest single contributor to the Saint Mary's
financial aid program. Through the generosity of individual and corporate
donors, CTODP has awarded more than $1,070.000 to current SM
families, helping more than 440 students.
WHY CTODP IS IMPORTANT TO YOU
CTODP is helping more than 440 of our students pay tuition.
For this year CTODP has awarded more than $1,070,000 dollars to our families.
CTODP depends on public support to raise needed funds.
Payments to CTODP qualify for a dollar-for-dollar Arizona Income Tax Credit.
Payments to CTODP also qualify for a Federal income tax deduction.
Payments to CTODP can actually put money in your pocket.
Either you pay CTODP or you pay the Arizona Department of Revenue.
We thank everyone who has supported CTODP, especially those who have
designated Saint Mary's as the school to benefit from your generosity.
Never Too Late To Get Involved
Saint Mary’s offers students many different ways to
become involved. We have clubs of all kinds – some are quite
large and some are quite small. Some are focused on spiritual
endeavors. Some concentrate on service to the broader
community. Some foster greater understanding of different
cultures. Some pursue the world of arts and literature. If we
don’t have a club that meets your child’s interests, we are
more than willing to explore creating one. Involvement in
school activities is a key factor in healthy and positive
development for teenagers, and it enhances academic
performance. We ask parents to encourage their children to get
involved with their classmates in some school-based activity.
These clubs are open to new members:
Saint Mary’s Honor Band
Has It’s Eye On New York City
Big News!! The Saint Mary's Honor
Band is planning an educational trip to
New York City in April. Although in the
planning stage, the trip will include
exposure to the musical life in New York
and the City itself. We will be working
hard all fall and early spring to raise the
$20,000 needed to make this trip a
reality. We are counting on the support of the Saint
Mary's community and we hope many people will participate
in the fundraisers we will sponsor. We are also asking for
monetary donations, in any amount, to help us reach our goal.
OCTOBER 2010
Incredible India!
By Dr. Katrina Lace
This summer I had the incredible opportunity to spend five weeks teaching in India as part of the Fulbright Teacher Exchange
program to New Delhi, India. A total of eight American teachers were awarded this prestigious grant, which enabled us to experience
the vibrant culture and educational system in New Delhi, India. Each of the American teachers was assigned to a Kendriya Vidyalaya
(KV) Secondary School in the capital city. Kendriya Vidyalaya schools are government educational facilities, which primarily enroll
the children of government employees throughout the vast country of India. I was assigned to Kendriya Vidyalaya Tagore Garden, a
beautiful primary through secondary school in Tagore Garden, New Delhi. I was welcomed with open arms at the daily school
assembly on my first day at the school. I was immensely impressed with how disciplined the 1,200 students were as they stood
quietly in rows, outside, in the hot sun, for more than 45 minutes during the assembly.
I was assigned to teach English in 9 th and 11 th grade classes, with class sizes averaging 40-50 students per class. Despite the
large class sizes and the lack of air-conditioning, I was stunned by how respectful and eager the students were to meet me and learn
about my life in America and about St. Mary’s High School. My Indian students were thrilled to look at the 2009-2010 St. Mary’s
yearbook and they had hundreds of questions about our school and the students here at St. Mary’s. The students at KV Tagore Garden
were also impressed to see me wearing a Salwar Kameez (traditional Indian clothing). As an American teacher, I believe that I was
able to share many positive examples of American teaching styles and techniques, as well as aspects of American culture with both
students and faculty at KV Tagore Garden. I also benefitted greatly from my experience in India and learned many exciting things
about Indian culture as well. It was very inspiring to see, first-hand, how similar many of the values that we hold here at St. Mary’s
High School, are also shared by the students and faculty at KV Tagore Garden. At KV Tagore Garden, they also begin each day with
school-wide prayer (some days in Hindi, other days in English). Discipline and respect were also fundamental aspects of the
curriculum at KV Tagore Garden, as it also is at St. Mary’s.
My Indian students were forced to converse with me exclusively in English because the only two words in Hindi that I was
able to retain were Namaste and Namaskar (Hindi salutations or greetings). The students and faculty at the school expressed to me
that they felt their conversational English improved during their five weeks of interaction with me, in and outside of the classroom.
Despite my wonderful experiences at KV Tagore Garden, the most exciting and enjoyable aspect of my experience in India this
summer was the delicious food. I relished in eating the delectable and savory dishes that were offered to me at every turn. I quickly
learned that food plays a major role in Indian hospitality and I daily enjoyed an afternoon snack of Chai tea and samosas brought to
me by one of the canteen workers at school. Lunch time at my school was a major event and provided a valuable opportunity for me
to socialize with the Indian teachers, all of whom equally shared their vibrant stories and vibrant food with me daily.
By far, the most breathtaking part of my journey was my visit to the Taj Mahal in Agra. I was blessed with the opportunity
to participate in a rare full moon viewing of this historic World Heritage site followed by an early morning tour. The Taj Mahal is a
majestic monument to love, which truly reveals the ingenuity and perseverance of Indian culture and history.
I have been greatly inspired by my participation in the Fulbright Teacher Exchange to India. I am more convinced than ever,
that in order to truly be a citizen of the world, you must travel outside of your community and experience other cultures. I
fundamentally believe that my experiences in India will provide ample educational opportunities for my American students here at St.
Mary’s and I have already begun a pen-pal letter writing exchange between my American students and my Indian students. India is an
immensely diverse and rich country and I was, and continue to be, blessed by having had such a rich and savory experience.
International Students Enrich Our Community
In recent years Saint Mary’s has enjoyed an increase in the number of foreign applicants for
admission. We have gained valuable experience in dealing with the issues peculiar to this process and
have received welcome support from the Diocesan Schools Office. The hospitality of our community
and the quality of our educational programs are now recognized beyond our borders. New applicants
come to us often because of the past experience of someone from their country of origin.
The world is now smaller than it has ever been and exposure to other cultures at early stages
of development is no longer a luxury but a necessity. Our international students are not the only
teenagers benefiting from their presence at Saint Mary’s. All of our students benefit from the
exchange of views and information provided by the students from different countries. The expansion
of our international student population is a continuation of our long tradition of diversity across all
lines. However, teens are teens and share many more common interests than differing ones.
This year we have sixteen guests from other countries here under federal student visas.
Although European teens are absent this year, last year we had three seniors from Italy and one from
England. We hope to maintain our international student group at or near this level in the future. In
some measure, this will depend on the willingness of local families to serve as a host family. If you
have an interest in doing so, please contact Assistant Principal Rob Rogers at 602-251-2515 or via
email at rrogers@smknights.org.
We gathered the group for a picture and ended up with two versions, one a formal image and
the other giving evidence of the spirited nature of the group. We’re glad they are here.
