OCTOBER 2010 Saturday, November 20, 2010 The Annual Open Golf Classic The Saint Mary’s Scholarship & Benefit Board is a group of men and women committing their time and talent to help make the Saint Mary’s experience possible for those who need financial assistance. The Board also supports other school programs. The Annual Saint Mary’s Open Golf Classic is an enjoyable way to support the efforts of the Board and affords golfers the chance to play a round at one of the premier college golf courses in the United States. Where: Rose and Crown Pub (Heritage Square) Please join the Saint Mary's Scholarship and Benefit Fund's Board of Directors at this happy hour for our alumni. Join us during homecoming week to mingle with alumni of all ages, network, catch up, and meet new people. Located in Heritage Square, the Rose and Crown is locally owned by three Saint Mary's alumni (Chris Ceimo, Don Philipi and Javier Urias). Appetizers provided and drink specials, including the famous St. Mary’s Pale Ale. This Happy Hour will begin at 5:30pm and if the mood is right, has no set end. **You must be 21 to attend this event** Saint Mary’s High School and the Scholarship & Benefit Fund Board Announce New Development Team Separately incorporated, Saint Mary’s High School and the Scholarship and Benefit Board have joined together to bring new faces and new energy to our community’s development efforts. Pictured at left are Ms. Angie Bayless and Mr. Aaron Muth (Class of 2000), who arrived on campus toward the end of September. They will be assisted by Weijia Gao, who worked with Karen Mankoski before her resignation in mid-summer. Ms. Bayless holds a Bachelor of Arts in English from Georgetown University. For a number of years she served as a Special Assistant in the Office of the Governor, primarily engaged in policy initiatives affecting Arizona’s relationship with Mexico. Subsequently she started, developed and sold a successful small business while tending to her two small children. A skilled writer and speaker, she brings significant strategic planning and marketing experience and energy to our community. Mr. Muth is a Knight through and through, as can be seen by the color of the shirt he wears in the picture. He holds a Bachelors of Science in Organizational Leadership from Fort Hays State University in Kansas and an MBA in Global Business from the University of Dallas. Since 2005 he has been Sports Tourism & Development Manager for the Mesa Convention & Visitors Bureau. In that capacity he has established working relationships with numerous hospitality leaders, business leaders, and national sports directors and organizers. His love and respect for Saint Mary’s is evident and we welcome him back home.
OCTOBER 2010 REDIRECT YOUR ARIZONA INCOME TAX DOLLARS TO HELP SM FAMILIES WITH TUITION – AT NO COST TO YOU NEW DEADLINE: APRIL 15, 2011 Arizona taxpayers may redirect up to $1,000 of state income taxes to benefit a student at Saint Mary's. Married couples may claim a maximum income tax credit of $1,000 and single taxpayers may claim a maximum credit of $500. Payments to the Catholic Tuition Organization of the Diocese of Phoenix (CTODP) qualify for this special tax treatment. A change in the law now allows you to prepare your tax return before redirecting your taxes to CTODP. Simply write a check to CTODP prior to April 15, 2011. You can designate Saint Mary's by indicating on the memo line of your check "St. Mary's High School" and your funds will be allocated to families with students at Saint Mary's. Mail your check to: CTODP, 2025 North Third Street #165, Phoenix, AZ 85004. Taxpayers may also claim a federal and State charitable deduction for payments to CTODP. Payments before December 31 qualify for a 2010 deduction; payments between January 1 and April 15 qualify for a 2011 deduction. Therefore, contributions to CTODP will cost you nothing and may actually provide a net benefit to the taxpayer by claiming both a dollar-for-dollar income tax credit and a charitable deduction. You can actually make money through this program. CTODP is the largest single contributor to the Saint Mary's financial aid program. Through the generosity of individual and corporate donors, CTODP has awarded more than $1,070.000 to current SM families, helping more than 440 students. WHY CTODP IS IMPORTANT TO YOU CTODP is helping more than 440 of our students pay tuition. For this year CTODP has awarded more than $1,070,000 dollars to our families. CTODP depends on public support to raise needed funds. Payments to CTODP qualify for a dollar-for-dollar Arizona Income Tax Credit. Payments to CTODP also qualify for a Federal income tax deduction. Payments to CTODP can actually put money in your pocket. Either you pay CTODP or you pay the Arizona Department of Revenue. We thank everyone who has supported CTODP, especially those who have designated Saint Mary's as the school to benefit from your generosity. FALL BLOOD DRIVE -- NOVEMBER 2 NHS RECEIVES HIGH HONOR The Blood Drive Committee of the National Honor Society was awarded the Gold Award (the second highest level) for their blood drives during the 2009/2010 school year at the 26th Annual High School Challenge Awards and Training luncheon held at Chase Field on September 15. The National Honor Society is once again sponsoring its Fall Blood Drive. It is scheduled for Tuesday, November 2 from 8:00 am to 1:00 pm in the school’s Gym. Any member of the Saint Mary's family, including parents, students, graduates, faculty and staff members, over the age of 16, are welcome to participate.
