A Great Bunch of Gals Win State Softball Championship
Dallas Escobedo: Named
Player of the Year
On May 11, 2007, after seven innings of scoreless softball, the Lady Knights pushed across two runs in the eighth inning to
clinch the 5A-1 State Championship. Saint Mary's finished the season at 29-8. It was a great year, and a memorable one for our
students and our entire community. The girls played with spirit and sportsmanship. This is the first softball championship in the
school's history. The Lady Knights have played in the championship game in two out of the last three years.
Both the Arizona Republic and the East Valley Tribune named freshman pitcher Dallas Escobedo as the Big School Player of
the Year. She finished with a 27-8 record, a 0.73 ERA and 501 strikeouts in 260 innings. She pitched a perfect game, four no-hitters,
and nine one-hitters. She hit .357 with eight home runs and 33 RBIs. She also stole 14 bases. As dominating as Dallas was throughout
the year, her teammates fully share the team's triumph with timely hitting and strong play in the field.
The selection of Dallas as Big School Player of the Year is the second such honor awarded to a Saint Mary's athlete this year,
the first being garnered by senior basketball player Jerryd Bayless.
The Virginia G. Piper Education Center now has windows and weather sensitive interior
work is well underway. We expect the building to be completed early in the 2007/2008 school year
but not by the time school opens in August. We currently expect to occupy the new building in
September.
Our Capital Campaign continues and we urge our families to do whatever they can to help us
reduce the indebtedness we have incurred to complete this wonderful addition to our campus.
Editor’s Note: This issue marks the final issue of the Green Streak for the 2006/2007 school year. The goal is to inform people of
news affecting the school, including administrative matters, student and staff achievements, and planned events. The publication also
provides some food for thought and reflection. We hope you found the publication informative and helpful. Comments may be
The Reality of MySpace: a Socially and Spiritually
Demented World for Your Teen
Submitted By: April Yeager
On Behalf of the Spirituality Committee
About 1½ years ago, word quietly broke among some parents of a “new” world of teenage communication via the internet:
www.myspace.com. In a surprisingly timely manner, the media was also exposing the dangers of this fast growing world, one that
had taken on a life of its own.
By now, nearly every parent out there is somewhat aware of MySpace, which hosts literally millions of personal web pages that
targets teens and young adults. Still, many parents are unaware of the true dangers, both the secular and spiritual dangers that
MySpace promotes and makes available to your children.
Aside from the obvious danger that MySpace is a candy land for predators of all types, MySpace makes readily available to your child
a world that will deeply challenge the most upstanding of individuals. Choices are extreme, from searching safe group listings of
particular high schools and alumni, to sexual orientation groups, to religious and spiritual cult groups as demented as you can imagine.
Our children are merely three clicks away from viewing pornographic images, dark and obsessively evil occult images and a variety of
other items. You may say to yourself that this is readily available on the internet anyway. However, searching it out is much different
than clicking into a web page or group site by accident, on what appears to be a fun and hip place to be for your children.
If you question the severity of these claims, take into consideration the fact that Janet Napolitano just passed a law requiring sex
offenders to register as just that, before surfing the images of MySpace and the individuals they seek to contact. While this is an
admirable action, the true message may be that the severity of the freedom allowed on this site is no nonchalant or laughing matter.
And yes, murders have occurred directly linked to relationships developed on MySpace.
With regards to allowing oneself to be placed into the near occasion of sin, MySpace could be considered the top example for teens in
this era. The overall environment calls upon the teens to get as outrageous as they can, with their language and most especially with
their photos. Web pages are accessed through a thumbnail photo placed by the teen, usually one that best represents who they are.
Many girls and guys alike appear to be presenting themselves in a centerfold-like manner, girly magazine wanabees, with crude
positioning of hands and tongues. Poems and humorous analogies are passed from one “friend” to another, with continuous sexual
overtones. The best description of at least 80% of what you see on MySpace: crude, rude and lewd. And even if your teen has listed
Jesus Christ as his hero in his profile, you can be assured that he’s reading inappropriate conversations everyday that he visits
MySpace.
Last year, St. Mary’s presented a speaker on the dangers of MySpace. His advice, don’t let your teen on the site AT ALL. A
representative from the Attorney General’s office who has spoken at various other schools in the Valley gave the same advice. This
form of communication between tweens and teens is simply not worth the dangers attached.
From a Catholic and moral perspective, MySpace is a sure way to allow your child to be surrounded by the near occasion of sin, and
have the ability to lead a double life. Today they may be a budding star student ready to embark upon the world, unfortunately and
perhaps well-equipped with the demented knowledge of our darkest sides.
If you haven’t checked out MySpace, simply register with a free yahoo address, and an obscure name and surf around a bit. After you
are done there, check out the latest craze, www.facebook.com. This newest site is at least more security-conscious, and if you
discover unknowingly your child’s page, you won’t be able to access it without his or her permission. A moral dilemma for another
day…
JUNE 2007
"Mr. Cunningham Goes to Washington"
For those of you too young to remember, a classic movie
starring Jimmy Stewart was titled "Mr. Smith Goes to
Washington." Junior Tommy Cunningham is headed to
Georgetown University for its Junior Statesmen Summer School
where he will take AP US Government & Politics. The program
includes a wide variety of events that will allow him to meet and
question political leaders. We wish Tommy all good things on
his summer adventure.
Lane Gallett To Washington
Junior Lane Gallett will be attending the The National Young
Leaders Conference (NYLC) in Washington, DC. This program
is designed to instruct and enrich promising students in a handson,
experiential atmosphere while preparing them for a lifetime
of leadership. NYLC offers students the opportunity to discuss
current events and issues with top policy makers in Washington,
D.C., analyze concepts, and then put them immediately to work.
This dynamic program features creative decision-making
simulations that challenge young minds to solve problems and
lead their peers through role-playing exercises in an energycharged
environment far from the traditional classroom
experience.
MR. RIDEAU'S NEW RESTAURANT
Chris Rideau was on our staff for nine years, most
recently in the Business Office. He also served as a football and
baseball coach. He has left Saint Mary's to pursue a lifelong
dream – to own and operate his own restaurant, in the tradition
of his grandfather and his father – and so was born Town Talk
II, the home of Creole Style Barbeque. Together with his father,
Charlie, the Rideaus now hold court at 3509 North 19th Avenue,
just north of Osborn Road, near Saint Gregory's.
Burleigh Rideau, Sr. moved to Phoenix from the tiny
town of Rideau, Louisiana in 1923. In 1949, Burleigh opened
the original Town Talk Barbeque, near 12th Street and
Washington. The unique blend of meats, slow cooked over
mesquite wood, with a mixture of his own special sauce,
provided one of the most flavorful meals to be enjoyed
anywhere. That same great taste -- with a perfect blend of meats
and sauce – has been reborn and you can find it at Town Talk II.
Party catering available. Phone No: 602-234-4745
Lisa Mills Attends Health Program
Lisa Mills, a junior who just finished a year in Anatomy &
Physiology, has been accepted for a one week summer institute
on health careers at Midwestern University in Glendale. This is
a very competitive program and they take only 30 students from
greater Phoenix. Lisa will be attending health career related
programs and participating in labs and workshops with
professors and doctors.
