International Students Enrich Our Community
In recent years Saint Mary’s has enjoyed an increase in the number of foreign applicants for
admission. We have gained valuable experience in dealing with the issues peculiar to this process and
have received welcome support from the Diocesan Schools Office. The hospitality of our community
and the quality of our educational programs are now recognized beyond our borders. New applicants
come to us often because of the past experience of someone from their country of origin.
The world is now smaller than it has ever been and exposure to other cultures at early stages
of development is no longer a luxury but a necessity. Our international students are not the only
teenagers benefiting from their presence at Saint Mary’s. All of our students benefit from the
exchange of views and information provided by the students from different countries. The expansion
of our international student population is a continuation of our long tradition of diversity across all
lines. However, teens are teens and share many more common interests than differing ones.
This year we have sixteen guests from other countries here under federal student visas.
Although European teens are absent this year, last year we had three seniors from Italy and one from
England. We hope to maintain our international student group at or near this level in the future. In
some measure, this will depend on the willingness of local families to serve as a host family. If you
have an interest in doing so, please contact Assistant Principal Rob Rogers at 602-251-2515 or via
email at rrogers@smknights.org.
We gathered the group for a picture and ended up with two versions, one a formal image and
the other giving evidence of the spirited nature of the group. We’re glad they are here.
