Preferably, any management intervention should only be undertaken if it can be ensured that<br />

it does not result in an animal or a group of <strong>animals</strong> having insufficient opportunity <strong>to</strong><br />

respond appropriately <strong>to</strong> a potential <strong>welfare</strong> ‘challenge’ through adaptation by changes in its<br />

own behaviour. An intervention will cause <strong>welfare</strong> problems only in those situations where<br />

the animal as a result of that intervention cannot adapt appropriately by changes of its own<br />

behaviour (sufficient <strong>to</strong> bring about appropriate environmental adjustments required not only<br />
