1990s The Post-Cold War Challenge Credit: U.S. Department of Defense Credit: U.S. Department of Defense DIA also dispatched more than 100 employees into the Kuwaiti Theater to provide intelligence support, and deployed eleven National Intelligence Support Teams overseas. Intelligence they produced was key to the overwhelming coalition victory. Colin Powell, Chairman of the JCS during DESERT STORM, noted after hostilities that no combat commander had ever received more benefit from as full and complete a view of an adversary as U.S. and coalition commanders did prior to and during the conflict. This DIA-led effort remains a powerful example of the force multiplying effect that excellent intelligence support can offer operational units in theater. DIA’s restructuring early in the decade and the experience provided by Operation DESERT STORM prepared the agency for other challenges as well.
