<strong>The</strong> underst<strong>and</strong>ing <strong>of</strong> food gardens as evolving agr<strong>of</strong>orestry systems (as opposed to<br />

routine annual crop operations) is important for explaining the trends observed in this practice.<br />

Because <strong>of</strong> the prominence <strong>of</strong> the perennial component <strong>of</strong> gardening, many l<strong>and</strong> use<br />

decisions are made not on an annual, but on a significantly longer-term basis. <strong>The</strong>refore,<br />

today’s changes in the cultivation <strong>and</strong> output <strong>of</strong> certain crops may be due not to the current<br />

economic conditions or shifts in growers’ preferences, but to the decisions made <strong>and</strong> actions<br />

undertaken a decade or longer ago. For example, Southworth (2006) observed a declining<br />
