Subject to the approval of the THI scheme, a project will be
developed to promote good practice in basic maintenance
of buildings in the THI area. If successful, consideration
should be given to expanding the project to all parts of Ayr
Central Conservation Area.
The THI Training Plan will provide the basis for training
activities in the THI area and the broader conservation area.
It will be reviewed and updated as necessary.
Further work will be undertaken to establish appropriate
interpretation and awareness initiatives to raise the public’s
awareness and understanding of Ayr’s history and heritage
and to contribute to a greater appreciation of Ayr’s historic
environment.
South Ayrshire Council will continue to promote the
establishment of a Townscape Heritage Initiative focusing
on the repair of historic buildings in New Bridge Street and
South Harbour Street.

A review of the measures for the protection of the
mediaeval rigs in Ayr will be undertaken as part of future
Local Development Plan processes.
South Ayrshire Council will undertake a detailed tree survey
of Ayr Central Conservation Area. On the basis of this
survey, the Council will bring forward proposals to protect
individual trees or groups of trees with Tree Preservation
Orders.
South Ayrshire Council will revise and consolidate the
existing series of Supplementary Planning Policy Guidance
where appropriate, and include additional advice on stone
repair, the painting of façades, and the reinstatement of iron
boundary railings.
Site-specific development briefs will be prepared for
development opportunities at South Harbour Street, the
corner of the High Street and New Bridge Street, and the
Affleck’s site behind the Sandgate.
Subject to available resources, South Ayrshire Council will
bring forward proposals for improvements to the public
realm in South Harbour Street.
Consideration will be given to public realm improvements to
the riverside walk where it passes through the conservation
area.
