CONTEXT FOR ACTION
The river and its floodplain are inextricably linked to and affected by land use
management in upland areas.
The ecological, cultural, economic and social value of the river and floodplain should be
identified, quantified and the impact of human activity on these values determined as far as
practical before decisions are made (in accordance with the precautionary principle).
River and floodplain functions and values should be conserved within the context of
integrated natural resource management.
The rehabilitation of degraded rivers, creeks and floodplains is important and should be
undertaken where necessary.

A coordinated and cooperative catchment approach to river and floodplain management is
essential and must involve all stakeholders.
Ongoing research into floodplain processes and management, and the dissemination of this
knowledge to the community is important for their ecologically sustainable use.
TEGIES TO ACHIEVE OBJECTIVE
Support the development and implementation of coordinated ecological and cultural
assessment, monitoring and reporting programs for floodplains.
Support research that increases knowledge and understanding of ecological processes,
hydrological cycles and aquatic biota, and improves practices for integrated management
of river, floodplain and production systems.
Support processes for developing equitable sharing and integrated management of river,
floodplain and overland flows.

Foster investigation and development of effective techniques including; communication,
education and awareness and 'better practise' guidelines for conservation, rehabilitation
and management of the river and its floodplain.
