This time it is cash-for-seat involving the MLA with former chief minister and Janata Dal Secular leader HD Kumaraswamy caught on tape uttering what he should not have said in public. However, for Kumaraswamy and his father former prime minister HD Deve Gowda, it has been nothing new. JDS has been alleged of corruption in the past still it has managed to stay put in state politics. Words of former chief minister of Karnataka "Each MLA (of JDS) is asking for one crore. They are saying you make anybody the MLC...this is my fate…" created a furore in Karnataka last week when private TV channels aired the audio CD of Kumaraswamy conversing with Vijugouda Patil , a JDS leader and an MLC aspirant. The incident once again exposed the ugly underbelly of the Upper house legislature politics that one sees very often being played out in different ways in different states. Perhaps Kumaraswamy knows well that 31 he is not the first and certainly not the last political leader who has traded the MLC or Rajyasabha MP post a reason why the JDS leader didn’t seem very disturbed by the controversy over the leak of the audio CD. Quick to react the JDS leader and Kumaraswamy was candid enough and accepted having had the conversation and defended himself saying it had been blown out of proportion as if he had "committed a sin". As he remained in the eye of a storm facing strong criticism over his remarks in the CD, Kumaraswamy said, "In this case I have explained internal party realities with my party workers. It has been blown out of proportion as though I have committed a sin. There is nothing that corroborates that someone has paid any money....." But when under attack Kumaraswamy's , counter attack that other parties in the state also indulged in similar moves that the Ex- CM drew flak from both the Congress and BJP. Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah reacted. "Whoever has done.. mistake is a mistake. Corruption is corruption. If he (Kumaraswamy) says other parties are also doing it, is not a defence at all". The opposition BJP sought a probe into the incident . Union Minister Ananth Kumar said the guilty should be punished. "Whoever is guilty, after a thorough probe, he should be punished," but many other state leaders of the BJP and the congress steered clear of making the issue bigger in the ongoing session of the state assembly. Different parties in the state including Congress and BJP have faced similar allegations in the past. Questions have been raised on elections of Business Tycoons like industrialist MAM Ramaswamy , Vijay Mallya of UB group, Rajeev Chandrasekhar of BPL group and several others who allegedly used the route of buying MLA votes to enter the Rajya sabha with JDS and BJP MLA’s support. While the state government and the opposition tried its best to avoid a debate not discuss the issue in Karnataka assembly ,it created a furore in the society forcing former Lokayukta Justice Santosh Hegde to comment "for the fear of more exposures coming to light they are not discussing it." However, brushing aside the attacks on him, Kumaraswamy said he enjoyed full confidence of his MLAs and other party leaders. "....they openly discuss all their difficulties with me. But with the Union Home ministry stepping in and seeking a report from the state government Kumaraswamy’s confidence that none may touch him seems misplaced even as a demand for cleaning up state politics and a thorough probe into all such suspect deals may open up an ugly can of worms involving all parties. The AAP Karnataka unit however is gearing up to launch an agitation and keep the issue alive .
