Warriors, Pioneers take cuts at Cohasse Country Club
BY NICK ETHIER
SPORTS STAFF WRITER
SOUTHBRIDGE — Although the
Southbridge and Tantasqua golf
teams may be heading in the opposite
direction as far as wins and
losses are concerned, both the
Pioneers (0-10) and Warriors (7-3)
spent a beautiful afternoon Sept. 23
at Cohasse Country Club fine-tuning
their game as the season rolls
on.
Tantasqua defeated Southbridge
9-0 in the match play format.
Olivia Brooks of the Warriors
won medalist honors, as she carded
a 37 on the par-36 layout for ladies.
The Pioneers’ low round went to
Matt LaBonte, as he shot a 5-over
40, as Cohasse’s par for men is 35.
Both Brooks and LaBonte were
expected to have good rounds at
Southbridge’s home course; the
entire Brooks family has a membership
at the club, while LaBonte
has been the Pioneers’ top golfer all
season, typically breaking or
shooting around 40.
Other top scores for the Warriors
included a 42 from Ken Bowen and
a 44 from Kyle Libiszewski. Jake
Power’s 48 was the second best
round for Southbridge, although
Power typically cards rounds a few
shots lower.
The other Tantasqua golfers
included Brandon Trafford,
Andrew Serrenho, and Tucker
France, while Angel Aviles and
Eric Walsh rounded out the fourman
Pioneer unit.
Typically the Warriors would
have had Nick Champeau and Kyle
Soper in the six-man rotation, but
Champeau was at a college visit
and Soper was ill.
On the Southbridge side, Roberto
Palmerino, Xavier Miranda, and
Dalton Corbett also play, but sickness
and school requirements
forced the three to miss the match.
Tantasqua’s seventh win has put
them at a good place record-wise in
the Southern Worcester County
League, and their three losses
came from tough foes.
“We had three kind of expected
losses,” Warriors coach Aaron
Berthiaume said. “East
Longmeadow was really strong,
probably one of the stronger teams
that they’ve had. Even if we played
our best we probably wouldn’t have
kept up with them this year.”
Tantasqua then lost to league
rivals Auburn and Grafton, both
away.
“We hung tight, the kids played
well, and they grinded it out,”
Berthiaume said of the 6 1/2-2 1/2
loss to the Rockets. “Grafton was
the same point spread and that was
at Highfields. That has a big home
course advantage because there’s a
lot of trouble and our guys found it
all.”
Members of the Southbridge and Tantasqua golf teams stretch and focus at the first
tee box before the match begins.
Berthiaume is looking forward
to the Warriors’ upcoming home
matches with Auburn, Shepherd
Hill, and David Prouty, three of the
top teams in the league.
“At home those should be good
matches,” he said. “We should be
competitive with those guys.”
Berthiaume is also proud of the
commitment his team has put forth
thus far.
“They’re playing at least nine
holes everyday,” he said.
“Tomorrow we’re going to look at
swings [on the] videotape. It’s a
huge time commitment too.”
Despite the 0-10 record,
Southbridge coach Peter Frey also
has been impressed with his team’s
commitment to the game.
“Their hearts are in it and
they’re dedicated,” he said. “They
all have good attitudes.”
At first, Frey only had three or
four golfers signed up to play on
the team. But after some work from
many parties, the Pioneers have
been able to field seven golfers.
“We were just trying to keep the
team alive,” Frey explained. “We
actually fielded seven kids, and
half of the kids had never played
before Aug. 26. We put the ad in the
paper, the athletic director [Brian
Davis], and the kids worked really
hard on finding kids to play.”
And now that a full team has
been established, Frey has noticed
that his players are striving to
become better players.
“I told them we weren’t going to
have practice on Saturday and we
had four or five of the kids show up
on Saturday just to play anyway,”
Frey cited as an example of the
commitment.
Frey also realizes that golf can
be more than just a leisure high
school sport.
“They’re learning the game and
the etiquette,” he said. “Maybe in
business someday they’ll need to
play with customers, and this gives
them the opportunity to help them
out in the future.”
