10 SPENCER NEW LEADER • Friday, October 1, 2010 Attempted house break on Whittemore Street LEICESTER — At approximately 9:45 a.m. Monday, Sept. 27, according to police, a white clean-shaven male, approximately 20 years of age, operating a green four-door sedan attempted to break into a home on Whittemore Street in Leicester. The resident was home at the time and had all doors to the home locked. The man, police said, rang the bell. When the resident did not answer, as the resident was not expecting anyone, the suspect attempted to kick in the front door. The resident yelled they were calling the police, and the man jumped into the vehicle, which was backed into the driveway, and fled toward Bond Street. A search of the surrounding area by Leicester, Paxton and State Police failed to locate the vehicle. “Residents in and around the Whittemore Street and Marshall Street areas should be particularly alert, as there have been a number of house breaks in this area,” said Leicester Police Chief James Hurley. “Please report all suspicious activity in your neighborhood immediately to the Leicester Police Department by calling 911.” Residents urged not to leave valuables in cars LEICESTER — Leicester Police Chief James Hurley is reminding residents to lock their vehicles, even when they are parked outside their home, in the wake of several car break-ins last week. “Remove all GPS systems, laptops, iPods, wallets and other electronic devices from the vehicle when it is parked,” said Hurley. “The individuals who are committing these car breaks are targeting vehicles that have these items inside. We made a significant number of arrests of suspects who were committing car breaks over the past few months thanks to tips from alert neighbors.” Plenty of kids’ events are planned at library SPENCER — The following events are scheduled for next week at the Richard Sugden Library: • Monday, Oct. 4, 4-5 p.m.: Young Scientists program for kids from kindergarten from Grade 6. • Tuesday, Oct. 5, 10-11 a.m.: Pre-K story hour for children aged 3-5; 11 a.m. to noon: Toddler story hour for children 18 months to 3 years of age and their caregivers. Walk ‘n Wag comes back to Sturbridge JoAnnSoldMyHouse.com THOMPSON - $324,900 OPEN HOUSE SUN. 10/3 12-2 OPEN HOUSE SUN. 10/3 12-2 • Library •4BR • 3.5 Bath DUDLEY 46 Sawmill Rd • 2 Car Garage • HW Floors • Family Room • Sandy Beach • 125’ Frontage • Open FL Plan DUDLEY 29 Flaxfield Road • 28’ Deck on Upper Level (Screened In) STURBRIDGE — The 2010 Walk ‘n Wag is an event that is fun for both dog and human alike. It’s been labeled “the doggie version of a day at the carnival.” And what’s best, it all benefits the homeless pets that Second Chance Animal Shelter in East Brookfield helps. The free Walk ‘n Wag will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 3 at Hamilton Rod and Gun Club, 24 Hamilton Road, Sturbridge. Registration begins at 10:30, and the walk begins at 12:15 p.m. A special reunion photograph for Second Chance adoptees will be taken at 11:45 a.m. Animal lovers come to enjoy the canine demonstrations, educational booths, compete in the doggie contests, auction/raffles, food, the “doggie boutique” loaded with lots of great stuff for both pet and human alike, wonderful vegan food, a fabulous chicken barbecue (advance tickets required) — and more food, fun and entertainment. You don’t need a pet to enjoy the fun. Enjoy a wonderful walk on the trails through the grounds, or sit by the private pond and relax. Get a chance to chat with other animal lovers and at the same time raise needed funds for the shelter. And most importantly, walk to help homeless pets. Enjoy a wonderful leisurely walk on the trail. Your walking will help those that can’t speak for themselves, a chance to stand up for those that need us the most — our homeless pets. You can walk with, or without, a pet. Wellbehaved dogs are welcome to come enjoy the day. Get pledges for your walk and you can even earn prizes. The more you raise, the more thank you prizes for you, too. This is the 10th annual event sponsored by Second Chance Animal Shelter. All proceeds from the event go directly to help Second Chance provide a second chance for homeless pets. Get started right now by going to www.secondchanceanimals.org and registering — it’s free. You can even create your own webpage, add your favorite pictures and raise funds through your webpage. In Bay State, October is Archaeology Month BOSTON — Secretary of the Commonwealth William F. Galvin has announced that October is Massachusetts Archaeology Month 2010. Organized by the Massachusetts Historical Commission and the state archaeologist, this is the 19th annual celebration of archaeology in Massachusetts. Archaeology Month features more than 75 events across the Commonwealth that promote awareness of the Commonwealth’s rich archaeological past through fun and engaging programs. This year’s theme is “Unlocking the Past.” “During Archaeology Month, there is something for everyone who has a curiosity about the past. I urge everyone to take part in these events to gain a deeper knowledge of Massachusetts and its archaeological past,” said Galvin, chairman of the Massachusetts Historical Commission. Archaeology Month offers a variety of programs for adults, children, parents, and teachers. Programs highlight local history, as well as archaeology around the world. Events include lectures, tours, storytelling, exhibits, walks and demonstrations, and will be held in the following communities: Acton, Amesbury, Arlington, Billerica, Boston, Brewster, Cambridge, Dartmouth, Dedham, Deerfield, Dennis, East Brookfield, Greenfield, Harvard, Harwich, Haverhill, Hudson, Lakeville, Lexington, Littleton, Lowell, Middleborough, Monterey, Nantucket, Newton, North Adams, North Reading, Norwell, Palmer, Pittsfield, Plymouth, Quincy, Saugus, Sheffield, Shrewsbury, Springfield, Sturbridge, Waltham, Wayland and Wellfleet. Highlights include exciting programs at the Robbins Museum of Archaeology in Middleborough, an Archaeology Laboratory Open House in Brewster, and several Family Archaeology Events in Boston, Cambridge, Haverhill, Middleborough, Newton, Norwell, and Plymouth. The Calendar of Events and Poster for Massachusetts Archaeology Month are available for immediate download at the Historical Commission website (www.sec.state.ma.us/mhc). Printed posters and calendars are also available; call the commission at (617) 727-8470 to receive a mailed copy. In addition to the event listings, the calendar includes information about Massachusetts museums with archaeology programs and archaeological websites. Special resources for teachers including archaeology related lesson plans are available at the Historical Commission website. The poster features a castiron door key, 6 inches long, found at the Tremont Street Housing Site in Roxbury, and part of the archaeological collections of the Commonwealth, which are curated at the Historical Commission’s Archaeological Curation Center. The Massachusetts Historical Commission is the office of the State Historic Preservation Officer and the State Archaeologist.
