Sets of general or foundational skills (competencies) have been<br />

identified and the need for discipline-specific competencies has been<br />

addressed. Voorhees (2001) proposed a list of 21st-century workplace<br />

skills. They fall into four major categories related to the general education<br />

and liberal arts portions of degree requirements and programs.<br />

They are summarized in Table 1.1.<br />

Most postsecondary school graduates need the skills proposed in<br />

Table 1.1 to survive and thrive in 21st-century workplaces. The busi-
