Welcome to the
Campus Community!
Seattle Pacific University
may soon be your new home.
Living on campus will provide you with new opportunities
to meet and live with a close community of
people and become involved in college life. You’ll soon
discover we’re more than just a place to live.
You probably have a lot of questions about what
it’s like to live at SPU. This booklet and the expanded
information at spu.edu/living will answer many of your
questions, plus provide essential information about
housing and meal-plan options.
Directions on applying for housing and submitting
your housing deposit are outlined on page 12 of this
booklet. Space is limited. Because of the high demand
for campus housing, please be aware that not all
students will receive their preferred assignment. If demand
for campus housing exceeds supply, priority will
be given to students who are required to live on campus.
The assignment process is outlined on page 14.
Keep your Campus Living booklet throughout the
process to help you make decisions along the way. And
while you’re getting ready to move, we’ll be busy preparing
your new home!
As part of the Office of Student Life, Residence Life oversees the residential community,
providing opportunities for social interaction and programs that emphasize
educational excellence and personal development. The Office of University Services,
which includes Campus Dining and Housing Services, manages room and roommate
assignments and meal plans. We work together to provide a living-learning
environment that offers physical comfort and safety while supporting personal and
academic growth.
residential
living requirement
Since it was founded in 1891, Seattle Pacific University has been committed to
the education of the whole person. For this reason, the residential experience is
considered an integral part of a student’s education. Research shows that students
who are engaged in a campus residential community have a more productive, and
ultimately more satisfying, college experience than those who live off campus.
A two-year guarantee of six consecutive academic quarters of housing is given to
first-time freshmen. SPU encourages students to live on campus subsequent quarters
as space is available. The Residential Living Requirement is evaluated yearly to support
the residential experience, as well as respond to housing demand.
For the 2013–14 academic year,
students are required to live on
campus unless:
• They are 20 years or older
prior to the first day of class
for the quarter for which
they are applying.
• They live at home with
parent(s), legal guardian(s),
spouse, or dependent children.
• They are a graduate student.
• They are enrolled for eight or
fewer credits.
emerson hall
Students say Emerson is a
great place to live, learn,
and build friendships to
last a lifetime. Features include a main
lounge with gas fireplace, underground parking, and
an exercise center.
Emerson Hall is centrally located, providing
easy access to many campus buildings. Popular
events include a quarterly Coffee House, the Emerson
Film Festival, the Born Identity Exhibit, and a hall ball
(which last year was held on an Argosy cruise).
Living in Emerson also provides a unique
opportunity for students to participate in programs
and conversations related to cross-cultural relationships
and social justice issues through the BRIDGES
program.
“Living in
Emerson
has been a
great part
of my college
experience!
Everyone is so welcoming, and it’s close
to everything on campus. Emerson is an
easy place to make friends.”
– Christine Rouner, Freshman
Emerson is SPU’s newest residence hall. Opened in
2001, it features suite-style living with private or
shared bathrooms.
Opened in 1965 and originally named Upper Residence
Hall, Ashton was renamed in honor of Dr. Philip F.
Ashton for his service as psychology professor at
Seattle Pacific University from 1929 to 1971.
“Ashton is
an energetic
place where
you can share
experiences
as a community while studying hard.
I couldn't imagine a greater experience
than living with your closest friends!”
– Jordan Wallace, Sophomore
ashton hall
The friendly atmosphere in
Ashton Hall makes all of its
residents feel at home. Ashton is
SPU’s largest residence hall, and its hilltop setting
offers a striking view of the campus and the Lake
Washington Ship Canal.
Annual events include the Ashton Cup (a lipsync
contest), Open Mic Nights, and a formal ball
(which was held at the Space Needle in 2012). Its
hall council is known for creative and thoughtprovoking
programming.
Ashton is an ideal place for both studying
and relaxing. It boasts a renovated lounge and
convenient exercise room. With more than 400
students, you’ll have many opportunities for
making new friends.
“Living in Hill
is like living
with one
huge family!
The guys on my floor are my best
friends, and I feel at home in Hill.
The traditions and relationships
make it hard not to feel welcomed.”
– Carl Sallee, Sophomore
Hill Hall opened in 1962 and was named
for the Reuben Hill family, who donated the
property for the school’s expansion.
hill hall
Hill Hall is known across
campus for its family
atmosphere. Its comfortable main
lounge is where students often gather for
study and conversation. Hill Hall “beach,” a
grassy area behind the hall, is a popular place
for outdoor recreation.
Hill Hall is also home of the REX Center,
which offers circuit training and aerobic
equipment. This residence hall is just a short
walk to both Gwinn Commons and the SPU
Library.
Annual events include a fall retreat,
a Halloween dance, Decade Skate, and a hall
ball (which has been held at venues such as
the Pacific Science Center and Experience
Music Project).
moyer hall
Moyer fosters a
close-knit community
where residents know
each other well. Located on the edge
of Tiffany Loop, Moyer is in the heart of central
campus and close to most classrooms, dining
locations, and recreational facilities.
In this fun and family-like hall, Moyer residents
enjoy activities such as a fall retreat, an
annual broomball tournament, and the Experience
Moyer Project. Last year Moyer and Hill Hall
councils collaborated to plan a joint-hall ball at
the Experience Music Project.
For rates, see inside back cover.
Layouts of typical rooms in Moyer are available at:
spu.edu/moyer
Opened in 1953 and remodeled in 1983, Moyer
was named in honor of Jacob Moyer for his years
of service from 1925 to 1946 as a professor and
dean of Seattle Pacific.
“Moyer is full of
fun, respectful,
and talented
people! At any point you can
count on music and laughter flowing out
the windows into Tiffany Loop. With a
hall as amazing as Moyer, why would
you live anywhere else?”
spu campus apartments
Our campus apartments offer an independent
living experience for transfer and continuing residential students (first-time
freshmen are not eligible). Campus apartments are furnished and accommodate two or more
residents, depending on the size. Kitchens are available for when you want to prepare your own
food, and meal plans may be purchased for when you don’t.
Conveniently located, these residences provide many opportunities for student involvement
in the larger campus community. Community activities are planned for students to interact with
neighbors, including dinner parties, study breaks, barbeques, and more.
“I have loved living
in the apartments.
I get to live with my best friends and set my own
schedule. The convenience allows me to relax so
I can do school well.”
making housing
assignments
Both your priority and your preferences influence
your housing assignment. First-time freshmen and
transfer students are prioritized separately by the
date their admissions applications are received —
the earlier your date, the higher your priority. Firsttime
freshmen are assigned to a residence hall and
transfers are assigned to an apartment according
to the preferences provided on the Campus Housing
Application (spu.edu/HousingApp).
matching
roommates
Your chances of getting into one of your
preferred housing locations will depend on its
availability and how many other students with
an earlier admissions application date have
requested that location. If your first choice is
unavailable, we will look to your second choice
and so on. Over half of first-time freshman will
be assigned to a triple room.
If demand for campus housing exceeds supply,
priority will be given to students who are required
to live on campus (see page 3 for residential living
requirements).
Roommate matching is guided by the preferences you mark on
the Campus Housing Application. We will seek to match you with
someone who has marked similar characteristics and interests, so
be honest and choose your answers carefully. Roommate assignments
are made without regard to disability, race, religion, creed,
or national origin.
If you want to room with a friend rather than be matched with
someone new, enter your friend’s SPU ID number in question #2 on
your application. As long as the request is mutual, we’ll do our best
to place you together; however, it will depend largely on whether
you and your requested roommate have similar priority.
Although you and your roommate may be matched because
you share some of the same qualities, you should not expect those
similarities to ensure a strong roommate relationship. Regardless
of how well you match on paper, or even if you choose your roommate,
characteristics such as cooperation, compassion, and communication
make roommate relationships work. Coming into your
new living situation with an open mind will contribute to developing
a friendship that will last long after you graduate.
Special
Accommodations
If you require special housing accommodations
due to a documented
disability, please answer “YES” to
question #3 on the Campus Housing
Application, and contact Disability
Support Services in the Center for
Learning at 206-281-2272. Incoming
students should submit their request
by June 1 for Autumn Quarter,
or six weeks before the beginning of
Winter and Spring quarters.
Special Dietary Needs
If you have a special diet or a food
allergy, the executive chef and food
service managers will discuss options
to meet your needs. Please answer
“YES” to question #4 on the Campus
Housing Application and contact
Campus Dining at 206-281-2356.
A selection of vegetarian and
unable to be met by Campus Dining
should consider living in the campus
apartments, where a meal plan is not
We recognize that student schedules and
dining preferences vary; therefore, we have developed meal
plans to provide flexibility and convenience. For complete plan details, please visit
Residence Halls. All students living in Ashton, Hill, Emerson, and Moyer halls are
required to choose a quarterly meal plan, either the Unlimited or a Weekly Block plan.
Each plan combines access to the main dining hall (Gwinn Commons) with SPU Points
to spend at any dining location (see “Understanding Points” below). The more access
you have to Gwinn, the fewer points you’ll need to supplement your meal plan.
pick up a Subway sandwich for a study group with friends. Your two entrances into
Gwinn would be taken off of your balance of 14, leaving you with 12 to use for the
remainder of the week. The cost of your Subway sandwich would be deducted from
Understanding Points
SPU Points. Unlimited and Weekly Block plans come with SPU Points, which are worth
a penny a point and save you sales tax. For example, let’s say you have an Unlimited
plan, which includes 7500 ($75). You want to purchase a latte at Academic Perks for
$2.55. The cashier will deduct 255 points from your balance, leaving you with 7245
($72.45) to use the remainder of the quarter. Unused SPU Points will roll from quarter
to quarter, but not year to year. If you deplete your SPU points before the end of the
quarter, you may purchase Advantage Points.
Advantage Points. These points are used in the same manner as SPU Points but are
not linked to a quarterly meal plan. Unused Advantage Points will roll from quarter to
quarter and year to year until no activity is recorded for three consecutive quarters.
Additional points may be purchased as needed.
Block 50
A combination of 50 entrances into Gwinn Commons and
meal exchange* swipes at Simply to Go retail locations.
Advantage Points A declining balance plan that saves sales tax on purchases 1500 ($15) min.
Note: Per-purchase plans do not automatically renew; you may purchase additional blocks and points
at your convenience. Balances roll from quarter to quarter and year to year until no activity is recorded
for three consecutive quarters.
*Meal Exchange
The meal exchange feature allows a Block plan patron to use one of their meals to get three items from
the Simply to Go case at retail locations: an entrée, a side dish or dessert, and a beverage. Simply to Go
options are available at the Corner Place Market, Academic Perks, and Common Grounds.
Answers to Frequently
Asked Housing Questions
When can I move in?
New students may check in according to the
following schedule:
Autumn Quarter 2013
Thursday, September 26, 9 a.m.–3:30 p.m.
Winter Quarter 2014
Sunday, January 5, 1–4 p.m.
Spring Quarter 2014
Tuesday, April 1, 1–4 p.m.
Staff will be unavailable outside of these times,
so please plan your arrival accordingly. Students
who arrive earlier than their scheduled checkin
time must find alternate arrangements
off-campus. Details about where to check in
will be sent with your assignment.
What can I bring with me?
We want you to be comfortable in your new home
away from home, but you may want to consider
prioritizing what you’ll really need. Space will be
limited. You may want to call your roommate(s) to
decide who will bring which items; you probably
won’t need or have room for two of everything.
A checklist of suggested items to bring is available
at spu.edu/WhatToBring.
What are the chances of getting
into my preferred building?
The popularity of certain buildings varies from
year to year. Your chances of getting into your
preferred building are dependent on the number
of available spaces in that building and how many
students with an earlier admission application
date have requested it.
What are my chances of getting
into a triple room?
There are more than 150 triple rooms in the
residence halls. Over half of first-time freshmen
will likely be assigned to a triple room.
What should I know about
connecting to the Internet?
There are wired ethernet connections to the
Internet in each residence hall room and apartment.
Wireless access is also available throughout
the majority of campus. For more information,
go to spu.edu/help.
What is my mailing address?
Residence hall students are assigned a mailstop
(the term used for your mailbox). Mailboxes are
located outside the Student Union Building. Campus
apartment residents either receive a mailstop
or, for specific buildings, have mail delivered
directly to a mailbox at their residence. Mailing
Services will provide mailing information to you by
September 15, 2013.
May I see my room before I move in?
Residence halls are used for conferences during
the summer and are closed during Christmas and
Spring breaks; therefore, rooms are not available
for viewing. Layouts of typical rooms in each hall
are available at spu.edu/HousingOptions.
May I have a car on campus?
Parking spaces on campus are limited, and there
is a quarterly fee. You may park your car on the
street, but SPU is located in a residential area and
those spaces are very limited. Safety and Security
manages campus parking and encourages you to
consider leaving your car at home and using Seattle
buses that stop near campus.
What about housing and food
service during holiday breaks?
Residence halls close during Christmas and Spring
breaks. Residents will need to vacate the hall,
but may leave personal property in their rooms.
Students occupying the campus apartments may
remain on campus during breaks. Food service is
not available in Gwinn Commons during Thanksgiving,
Christmas, or Spring breaks.
Residence halls close on the following schedule:
Autumn Quarter 2013
Thursday, December 12, 10 a.m.
Winter Quarter 2014
Thursday, March 20, 10 a.m.
Spring Quarter 2014
Friday, June 13, 4 p.m.
