EDRD 3529 CHILD LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT AND THE<br />
READING PROCESS (3) Registration Approval: School of Education.<br />
Prerequisite: LIN 2100. Examines the nature of language,<br />
children’s stages of language growth, cognitive processes related<br />
to language development and growth, and the implications of<br />
natural language development for early reading/writing instruction.<br />

EDRD 4231 READING AND LANGUAGE ARTS METHODS (3)<br />
Registration Approval: School of Education. Prerequisites: EDRD<br />
3529, LIN 2100 and admission to the School of Education. Incorporates<br />
a variety of instructional strategies, formats and media to<br />
present a variety of methods and strategies for teaching, integrating<br />
and assessing the processes of reading, writing and oral<br />
language in the elementary classroom; and analysis and uses of<br />
language arts materials. Corequisites: EDU 4230, EDU 4233 and<br />

EDRD 4516 CHILDREN’S LITERATURE (3) Prerequisite: ENG<br />
1110 or equivalent. Examines the variety and richness of literature<br />
available for children in preschool through eighth grade; presents<br />
major genres and notable authors and illustrators; and develops<br />
familiarity with varied responses to literature adaptable for classroom<br />
use. Attribute: Upper Division. Class not open to freshmen.<br />
EDRD 4517 YOUNG ADULT LITERATURE (3) A study of young<br />
adult literature, including intensive reading in the best of this<br />
literature and application of both critical and pedagogical strategies<br />
to the reading. Attribute: Upper Division.<br />
EDRD 4530 READING AND WRITING ACROSS THE CUR-<br />
RICULUM (2) Prerequisite: Completion of Professional Quarter 1<br />
and 2. Provides a functional approach to content-centered instruction<br />
that will prepare pre-service teachers to teach content, reading<br />
and writing skills simultaneously. Emphasis is placed on the<br />
application of skills that middle, junior and senior high school<br />
readers must make to learn content from a variety of sources and<br />
materials. Attribute: Upper Division. Class not open to freshmen<br />

Science Education<br />
EDSC 3359 TEACHING SECONDARY SCIENCE (3) Prerequisite:<br />
Admission to School of Education. Designed to assist students<br />
in relating their understanding in various science<br />
disciplines to the practical problems of planning and implementing<br />
learning experiences for secondary students. The emphasis is<br />
on the use of inquiry/problem-solving approaches to science<br />
learning. Corequisite: EDU 3559. Attribute: Upper Division. Class<br />

EDSC 4234 SCIENCE METHODS: ELEMENTARY EMPHASIS<br />
(3) Registration Approval: School of Education. Prerequisite: Admission<br />
to School of Education. Briefly surveys current elementary<br />
science programs and examines techniques and materials<br />
using a discovery approach to teach some basic principles of<br />
science. Corequisite: EDU 3542. Attribute: Upper Division. Class<br />

EDSC 4527 NATURE OF ELEMENTARY SCHOOL SCIENCE (3)<br />
Introduces science teaching strategies and processes of science<br />
(hypothesizing, designing experiments, etc.) using class activities<br />
from modern elementary science curricula. Attribute: Upper Division.<br />
EDSC 4566 ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION FOR TEACHERS -<br />
OCEANOGRAPHY AND METEOROLOGY (5) Prerequisites:<br />
CHM 1110 or PHY 1110, BIO 1100 or higher, and PHY 1150 or<br />
permission of instructor. Gives ideas for outdoor activities, classroom<br />
activities, field trips, regional environmental resources,<br />
readings, teaching strategies and discussions. Attribute: Upper<br />

Special Education<br />
EDSP 3107 EXCEPTIONALITY IN THE CLASSROOM (2-3)<br />
Registration Approval: School of Education. Prerequisite: Professional<br />
Quarter 1. Examines the concept of difference, including influences of<br />
exceptionality on social and psychological roles. Presents strategies<br />
for inclusion of exceptional students in classrooms. Corequisites:<br />
EDU 3102, EDU 3104 and EDU 3105. Attribute: Upper Division. Class<br />
not open to freshmen and sophomores.<br />
EDSP 4642 INDIVIDUAL EDUCATION PROGRAMS (3) Registration<br />
Approval: School of Education. Prerequisite: EDSP 3107.<br />
Classroom presentation centers around the interaction of the<br />
disabled child with the school. Topics include federal and state<br />
regulations for the education of the disabled; procedures for referral,<br />
diagnosis and placement; formation of individual education<br />
programs, service models, task analysis and sequencing of skills;<br />
formation and evaluation of behavioral objectives; selection of<br />
instructional materials and methodology; and classroom organization.<br />
(Pre-service emphasis.) Attribute: Upper Division. Class not<br />
open to freshmen and sophomores.<br />
EDSP 4645 PSYCHOLOGY OF THE GIFTED INDIVIDUAL (3)<br />

Introduces identification of gifted and creative individuals and development<br />
of educational programs and resources for the gifted. Attribute:<br />

EDSP 4646 SEVERE DISABILITIES (3) Registration Approval:<br />
School of Education. Prerequisite: EDSP 3107. Explores the issues<br />
surrounding the education of the developmentally disabled person.<br />
Includes definitions and classification systems, etiology,<br />
theoretical approaches, strategies for educational diagnosis and<br />
intervention, family problems and other issues. Attribute: Upper<br />
Division. Class not open to freshmen and sophomores.<br />
EDSP 4648 TEACHING STUDENTS WITH EMOTIONAL AND<br />
BEHAVIOR DISORDERS (3) Registration Approval: School of<br />
Education. Prerequisite: EDSP 3107. Provides special educators<br />
with knowledge related to characteristics and inclusion strategies<br />
for children and youth with behavior disorders or emotional<br />

EDSP 4651 SPECIAL EDUCATION ASSESSMENT (3) Registration<br />

Teaches diagnostic and evaluative procedures commonly used<br />
with exceptional children. Includes construction of criterion referenced<br />
tests and curriculum based assessment; use and interpretation<br />
of formal and informal tests, and procedures and related<br />

EDSP 4653 TEACHING READING TO EXCEPTIONAL STU-<br />

Focuses on diagnosis of reading strengths and weaknesses;<br />
correlates of reading problems; and analysis and selection of<br />
methods and materials for reading instruction of special needs<br />
children, including children who speak English as their second<br />
language. Attributes: Upper Division and Writing Course. Class<br />
not open to freshmen and sophomores.<br />
EDSP 4657 BEHAVIOR MANAGEMENT (3) Registration Approval:<br />
School of Education. Prerequisite: EDSP 3107. Focuses on<br />
an in-depth explanation of applied behavior analysis and classroom<br />
management strategies useful in meeting the needs of<br />
children and youth with behavioral disabilities. Attribute: Upper<br />

EDSP 4658 ISSUES IN SPECIAL EDUCATION (3) Registration<br />

major trends and issues affecting special education, including the<br />
rights of the disabled, emerging trends in educational services<br />
and major issues surrounding the quality of life of disabled individuals.<br />
