Savings Banks in Germany
Savings Banks
The German savings banks are legally
independent credit institutions, firmly
rooted in their local communities and
closely aligned to citizens‘ needs.
The savings banks do more than extend
loans and offer current accounts - they
are committed to social involvement and
the development of their local business
areas.

Characteristics
a business model and a legal form which ensures the supply of
banking services to the wider public
focus on the so-called “regional principle”
strong cooperation within the Group, sustained by a common
trademark and the Joint Liability Scheme
a decentralised structure, Group-wide division of labour and the
generation of economies of scope
“S-CountryDesk” network provides international support to business
Savings Banks in Germany
Regional Principle
• According to German law savings banks are not allowed to open up
subsidiaries abroad, i.e. each savings bank restricts its business activities to
the regions of the respective municipality(ies)!
• Savings banks are decentralised institutions: Each savings bank is working
independently in its defined business region.
• Each savings bank decides locally on its respective business policy, product
range and prices.
Think globally, act locally!
