Welcome to the 2009 Swaledale Festival!
The Swaledale Festival is a feast of classical, folk, choral, brass
band, jazz and world music, visual art, poetry, drama, comedy,
talks, guided walks, workshops and masterclasses. For two weeks
in the beautiful northern Dales you can listen to the BBC’s Young
Musician of the Year, remember Humphrey Lyttelton, laugh out
loud at Ian McMillan and The Mandolinquents, marvel at Gwilym
Simcock’s piano playing and Tasmin Little’s violin virtuosity, and
enjoy a late-night dialogue between a composer and the bats in
Grinton churchyard.
As always, we feature
superb local artists and a host
of talented youngsters. There
are more solo recitals and
choirs this year, and some
sensational folk and chamber
groups. We introduce The
Reeth Lecture, in Reeth (where
else?) with inaugural lecturer
Sir Roy Strong. And following
John Bly’s popular 2008 visit,
we welcome his Antiques
Roadshow colleague,
Eric Knowles.
Richmond Day is back,
with a Caribbean steel band, a celebration of the historic visit to
Richmond 168 years ago by the great pianist Franz Liszt, and the
superb Choir of York Minster. The lovely poem on page 23, How to
make Richmond, is reproduced by permission of Ian McMillan and
the Academy of Urbanism, which awarded Richmond the title of
Best Town in Britain 2009.
We have another large-scale community event this year, an
opportunity for local people of all ages to perform alongside top
professionals. And for the first time it’s a brand new work
commissioned especially for the people who’ll perform it - a
Musical Play entitled Semmerwater. Its creators are the Reethbased
author Ann Pilling and composer David Gordon.
We remain extremely grateful to our generous sponsors
(listed on page 21), Festival Angels, Friends and volunteers, and all
the local people who make the Festival special.
Many of you told us in a recent audience survey that you
like being surprised. I’m sure you’ll find a wealth of surprises in
this year’s programme! We look forward to seeing you.
Swaledale Festival Friends
The Friends scheme plays a significant role in funding the
Festival, particularly in times of economic difficulty when our
corporate sponsors may have major concerns of their own.
Friends receive a range of benefits, most significantly the
opportunity to book popular events before they go on general
sale and, potentially, sell out. Friends are also invited to
exclusive receptions during the Festival, when they can renew
old acquaintances and meet the evening’s performers informally.
Become a Friend before 13th April, using the Order Form
on page 34, and your ticket order will receive priority treatment!
Please become a Friend anyway, because we need you… If you’d
like details first, contact Harriet Smithson at 01748 880018 or at
The Reeth Lecture, by Sir Roy Strong ~
Saving the English Country Church
E8 | 5.00pm | Reeth Methodist Church | U
A fascinating talk by an immensely characterful writer, church
historian, broadcaster, diarist, formal gardener and all-round man
of the arts. Three elements of our treasured heritage which many
people feel need protecting are the country house, fine gardens,
and the country parish church. The first two, thanks in part to Sir
Roy’s early work at the V&A, have become popular attractions,
visited by thousands. But country churches are in crisis, and all
16,000 are at risk. Sir Roy argues passionately that the real
challenge is to give churches a reason to survive, and that their
role as purely sacred spaces with all other activities relocated to
the village hall is suicidal. So what is the answer? There will
doubtless be some lively discussion!
Pure fun from Britain’s first modern mandolin quartet. They play
music ranging across many genres with a big helping of witty
banter. The quartet is led by ace mandolinist, fiddle player and
guitarist Simon Mayor, whose jokes are a match for any stand-up
comic. With him are Hilary James (“One of Britain’s finest voices” -
BBC Radio 4), Gerald Garcia, and Richard Collins, the three-time UK
Echolocation, with Robert Jarvis
________
WORLD
PREMIÈRE
________
10.00pm or after | St Andrew’s Church, Grinton (churchyard) | U
A unique performance which draws from the natural environment
of Grinton Churchyard and its nocturnal
wildlife. Composer Robert Jarvis uses the
ultrasonic calls of bats searching for food to
create a piece of music that celebrates this
often unheard wonder of nature. The highfrequency
sounds produced by the bats are
picked up by a series of bat detectors and then
fed into the composition. The result is a
surround-sound experience with the music
moving around the space as the bats themselves fly about.
Mulled wine and soft drinks will be available and we
recommend warm outdoor clothing. Come and enjoy this
extraordinary performance as night falls in Grinton.
Note that the exact starting time will depend on the time
The Mandolinquents finish.
E11 | 7.00pm | St Agatha’s Church, Easby, near Richmond
If you listen carefully, can you hear the echoes of time? Does a
place capture the emotions of those who have lived within it?
The talented drama students of Richmond School are
creating some superb original work. Having explored
the area round the ancient church at Easby, the players,
directed by Amy Southworth, perform a new piece
created from whispers and secrets of the past, adding
their own secrets to those which came before.
Preludes and Interludes ~
Graham Caskie, piano
E16 | 8.00pm | St Andrew’s Church, Aysgarth | U
A unique collaboration between the pianist Graham Caskie, the
artist Brian Dunce and the composer Stephen Goss.
In 2006 Brian Dunce was commissioned by the Guildford
International Music Festival to paint twelve large works, each a
direct and personal response to one of the twelve Debussy
Préludes, Book 1, as performed and interpreted by the superb
pianist Graham Caskie. As a development of the project, Stephen
Goss was commissioned by Riverhouse Barn in Surrey to write a
number of musical reflections on both the Préludes and the
paintings. Entitled Interludes, these short pieces are interspersed
with the Préludes to form a full evening recital programme. Brian
Dunce will give a short introductory talk, and during the
performance his paintings will be displayed on stage. The music
will be introduced by composer Stephen Goss.
is able to, perhaps because they are elderly, ill or disabled. So
every year, as part of our outreach programme, we take a bit of
of the Tetra Classical Guitar Quartet will be heading off around
Richmondshire to give solo recitals at care homes and day
Tuesday 2nd June
How to make Richmond
You need a river; preferably one that can hold the light
Of the setting sun in Autumn; you need a castle,
A nice big dominant one that holds half the sky,
That percolates your thinking if you live here.
You need a theatre, one where the performers on stage
Are almost sitting in the audience, where the words you speak
Seem to hang in the air like lights. You need a history
That doesn’t poke you in the eye, but rather walks beside you,
A companion, a guide pointing and explaining. Cobbles are good,
And a range of museums. And the language has to be local,
Has to sound like it’s made of things like cobbles, and the river,
And the shadow of the castle, and the impossibly beautiful
Skies of North Yorkshire with just the odd cloud sailing...
Ian McMillan, 2008
Ian McMillan: voice • Luke Carver Goss: accordion, guitar, vocals
Dylan Fowler: guitar, mandocello, vocals • Clare Salaman:
nyckelharpa, hurdy-gurdy, violin • Nathan Thomson: double bass,
flutes, kalimba • Oliver Wilson Dickson: violin, percussion, vocals
A scintillating night of poetry, music, improvisation and comedy.
Yorkshire poet, broadcaster and comedian Ian McMillan, star of
Any Questions, Just A Minute and Have I Got News For You, is back
at the Swaledale Festival, this time with composer and
accordionist Luke Carver Goss and the mighty Orchestra.
McMillan's familiar Barnsley accent brings a unique charm
to songs such as Memories Of A Russian Heatwave, The Shanty
Attacker and Song Of The Quarryman, accompanied by fiddles,
whistles, accordions and hurdy-gurdy. There’ll probably be a
rendering of It's Goodnight From Him - Ian’s personal tribute to
Ronnie Barker. And sometime during the evening a group of local
students will perform a short musical which they will have
conceived, written and rehearsed during a three-hour workshop
with Ian and Luke in the afternoon!
“You could call him daft as a brush but he’s as switched on
as a power station” Yorkshire Evening Press
“One of my all-time heroes - he’s such a talented bloke, I
could kill him” Mike Harding
Liszt in Swaledale ~ a celebration
E37 | 5.00pm | The King’s Head Hotel, Richmond
On 27th January 1841 the great
Hungarian pianist and composer Franz
Liszt played a concert in the ballroom of
the King’s Head Hotel in Richmond. In
celebration of this historic event, the
prodigious young pianist Simon
Passmore will give an hour-long recital
of Liszt’s compositions and other
popular music of the time – in the same,
recently-restored ballroom.
Broadcaster, writer and music
scholar Dr Kenneth Birkin will start the proceedings with a short
talk on the great composer and his music, and after the concert
there will be a chance to meet our modern-day ‘Liszt’ and enjoy a
glass of wine and a finger buffet in the restaurant. There will even
be some students from Richmond School serving food in elegant
1841-style dress. Come and enjoy the party!
Inspired by William Watson’s popular poem The Ballad of
Semmerwater (now spelt Semerwater), renowned author, poet
and Reeth resident Ann Pilling and composer David Gordon have
created a brand new musical play for the Swaledale Festival. A
large cast of schoolchildren and familiar local characters will be
joined by leading chamber group London Concertante and some
top vocal soloists to première a work written especially for them.
array of stars over the years. This concert features eight of the
school’s current crop of talented students, many of whom will be
destined for great careers in music. The string players will
perform Beethoven’s Quartet, Op.18 No.1, and the brass group will
play music by Gabrieli, Koetsier and others. You’ll probably
