St. Aldhelm’s talent makes an Album
When I was 15 I was really determined to
get singed to a label so I was searching on
the internet. I saw this label called Downtown
Artists, they were looking for
artists, I was interested so we called them.
I had to go to London and sing to them. When I
sang to them they said they really wanted to sign
me... so they did and I have been with them for 6
months now.
We had to have a meeting with producers to see which
one best fitted me and also to get myself a manager.
They are all really welcoming and I have worked hard
to get where I am. Now i am singed to a record label.
I didn't tell the Academy straight away as I wanted
to sort it out, but now I am ready and proud to share
my success with you all and also to help the Academy raise money or whatever
I can do; putting shows on etc. as this new Academy is a fresh start like my
music is for me.
I am currently working on my album and it will be out soon. The album is
called Seeking Revenge. It’s basically about people who have put me down
and also made me fee like I was worth nothing, saying I will get revenge
showing them what I do and they cannot bring me down at all. Its a strong
message to bullies as I have been bullied before and I know what it’s like.
The album also has good dance songs that will make you move.
They are promoting me in London and I am doing my first music video soon, I
can’t wait! I also have interviews and shows coming up so this year will be
busy for me. It was my dream and now its
starting to unfold and become real.
I have (fingers crossed!) a chance to do a
song with Misha B and this will also be on my
album. My label work so hard to help me and
get what I need to give you good music. I
really want to inspire kids and show that you
can do what you want to do, I am on the first
step to achieving my goals.
RAISING THE PROFILE OF POETRY
her peers, having demonstrated an understanding of
the language and meaning of their chosen poems. The
winner went forward to take part in the next stage,
which was the County Final.
A few weeks ago some of our young people participated
in a challenge to take part in the ‘Poetry By Heart’
competition, hosted by the Dorset County Council
Library Service in Dorchester. Young people had to
choose two poems from a list, supplied by the
organisers, which they had to be able to recite from
memory.
‘Poetry By Heart’ is an educational initiative of the
Poetry Archive, which is an online collection of
recordings of poets reading their own work, and is
supported by the Department for Education. Over
4,500 schools and colleges registered to take part in 50
towns and cities. Although this competition is a new
initiative in England (this academic year being the first),
it is, in fact, an international event which takes place in
America, Canada and Ireland.
When these poems had been committed to memory,
the competitors had to recite them in class, in front of
their peers, followed by a performance in front of the
whole school. The winner was then nominated, by his/
With the support of young people and staff, the
Academy went through this process and nominated
Christian Howarth as its representative. Annie Freud,
Poet and Master of Ceremonies at the County Final,
described Christian’s performance as “edgy” and his
use of language “evocative”. Christian, along with the
other competitors, received a Certificate of Achievement
and a voucher.
Poetry is a wonderful way
of giving young people
the tools and techniques
to develop their skills,
especially speaking and
listening. In addition,
poetry gives the writer
freedom to express
thoughts and feelings
openly, while at the same
time inspiring the writer to explore and extend their
knowledge, understanding and use of language.
Year 8 Enrichment class
As part of the Year 8
enrichment tasters some of
the girls did hair styling,
doing each others hair.
‘This is the group practising hair styling for their
themed hair competition that was held at the end of
term.
Bullying campaign winner!
Rebecca Hawtin (Year 9)
attended the Mayors
Parlour last term where
she was awarded for her
poetry. She had written a
poem for the Mayors
anti bullying Campaign
following the anti
bullying conference last
month.
Congratulations Rebecca,
Well done!
Wanted! Wanted! Wanted!
We are looking for any good quality, second
hand uniform that you would like to donate
back to the Academy. Many families would benefit from
your generosity, so if you have any that you would like to
donate then simply bring it in to the main reception.
Many thanks
Last term the Year 9 Child Development class visited a local organic farm, Ceder
Organic in Rempstone, they were to find out, first-hand how this environment
could provide a stimulating learning situation for young children. We were also
lucky enough to have the only day of sunshine we have had for ages! The young
people were, without exception, a fantastic credit to the Academy and themselves,
with their engagement in the day and their general attitude. Below are
some extracts from the letters we have written to Claire and Andrew Head
at the farm to say a massive thank you for making us so welcome...
The thing I mostly enjoyed was catching the chickens because it was funny and
it was a great laugh. I only managed to get a couple as my other friends caught
loads L…. I got a bit muddy and managed to scream a couple of times. All the
chickens just kept running away and not letting me catch them but finally they
got tired and caught some. There were other amazing things that I enjoyed but
the chickens were 100% the best part of the day. Victoria Messenger
Thank you for letting us visit your amazing farm on Wednesday 20 March it was
so fun and a great experience also it got me thinking about how animals live and
how important it is for them to have a good life. My favourite part was the
alpacas (or lamas as I kept on calling them) also the chickens were amazing I
loved getting to see how they live and how the food that we buy has lived.
I understand how getting free range can help all thanks to you; you were so kind
and helpful. I would recommend you to anyone it’s a truly amazing farm!!!
Thank you so much for giving me and my classmates an amazing experience it wont be
forgotten any time soon (or if they are like me NEVER J) Jess Burnes
I learned loads on that trip to the farm like that if a little lamb struggles to get out of its
mother then it can be helped out manually by a person (aka. You). I found the entire trip
very useful and fun and as I enjoyed it so much, I know for a fact that if I had the chance to
go again, I would jump at it because you made it the most phenomenal day ever!
I would definitely recommend Cedar Organic Farm to everyone I know for a visit as I know
they would enjoy it and learn so much like I did. I would recommend the farm because I
want people to see how good this farm is at:
Producing animals.
How much fun you can have at the farm.
And how good this farm is whether you are just visiting
or not.
I think that this has been the most fun, exciting and
very useful learning farm that I have ever been to.
Thank you very much for giving us such a fun, entertaining
and interesting experience… Hopefully we can
come again and see all the little lambs that we saw
giving birth, bigger and older. And too see you all again
too. Courtney Sherman
Cobham Visit
On Tuesday 19 th March 5 engineers from Cobham visited the Academy to deliver a presentation on the
technologies they develop for the Aviation Industry. James Kemmit, Chief Engineer, gave an overview of the Air
to Air Refuelling systems which are used across the globe in both commercial and military aviation. In addition
to this, two Graduate Trainee’s gave a short talk on their experiences in the industry and their career paths to
employment. The young people were all fascinated by the topics, and had the opportunity to get hands on with
some of the real life props which the Cobham team brought in with them. We are now planning a follow up
event and will be taking a group of selected Engineers to the Cobham factory to learn more about the industry.
Levi Jackson “ I found it really interesting seeing the technology in action, then having
the chance to get hands on with actual props”
Carl Shiers “ I’m really looking forward to visiting the factory and seeing the
technology in production”
Auschwitz project
“6 th Form life at St Aldhelm’s Academy: as part of the
Lessons from Auschwitz project, Lauren Gale and Kieran
Smith had the privilege to familiarise themselves with the
History of the Holocaust.
The project consisted in four steps: 1)Orientation seminar
where the Young People met with an Aushwitz survivor, 2)
The visit to Aushwitz-Brikenau concentration and death
camps where students came face to face with the Holocaust
tragedy, 3) A follow-up seminar where Young People shared
their experience as a group and decided how to share the
History of the Holocaust within their community. Finally, the
on-going final step requires Lauren and Kieran to work with
their community and within the Academy to share their own
Lessons From Auschwitz and what they learnt from their experience.”
