St. Aldhelm’s talent makes an Album When I was 15 I was really determined to get singed to a label so I was searching on the internet. I saw this label called Downtown Artists, they were looking for artists, I was interested so we called them. I had to go to London and sing to them. When I sang to them they said they really wanted to sign me... so they did and I have been with them for 6 months now. We had to have a meeting with producers to see which one best fitted me and also to get myself a manager. They are all really welcoming and I have worked hard to get where I am. Now i am singed to a record label. I didn't tell the Academy straight away as I wanted to sort it out, but now I am ready and proud to share my success with you all and also to help the Academy raise money or whatever I can do; putting shows on etc. as this new Academy is a fresh start like my music is for me. I am currently working on my album and it will be out soon. The album is called Seeking Revenge. It’s basically about people who have put me down and also made me fee like I was worth nothing, saying I will get revenge showing them what I do and they cannot bring me down at all. Its a strong message to bullies as I have been bullied before and I know what it’s like. The album also has good dance songs that will make you move. They are promoting me in London and I am doing my first music video soon, I can’t wait! I also have interviews and shows coming up so this year will be busy for me. It was my dream and now its starting to unfold and become real. I have (fingers crossed!) a chance to do a song with Misha B and this will also be on my album. My label work so hard to help me and get what I need to give you good music. I really want to inspire kids and show that you can do what you want to do, I am on the first step to achieving my goals. Newsletter RAISING THE PROFILE OF POETRY her peers, having demonstrated an understanding of the language and meaning of their chosen poems. The winner went forward to take part in the next stage, which was the County Final. A few weeks ago some of our young people participated in a challenge to take part in the ‘Poetry By Heart’ competition, hosted by the Dorset County Council Library Service in Dorchester. Young people had to choose two poems from a list, supplied by the organisers, which they had to be able to recite from memory. ‘Poetry By Heart’ is an educational initiative of the Poetry Archive, which is an online collection of recordings of poets reading their own work, and is supported by the Department for Education. Over 4,500 schools and colleges registered to take part in 50 towns and cities. Although this competition is a new initiative in England (this academic year being the first), it is, in fact, an international event which takes place in America, Canada and Ireland. When these poems had been committed to memory, the competitors had to recite them in class, in front of their peers, followed by a performance in front of the whole school. The winner was then nominated, by his/ With the support of young people and staff, the Academy went through this process and nominated Christian Howarth as its representative. Annie Freud, Poet and Master of Ceremonies at the County Final, described Christian’s performance as “edgy” and his use of language “evocative”. Christian, along with the other competitors, received a Certificate of Achievement and a voucher. Poetry is a wonderful way of giving young people the tools and techniques to develop their skills, especially speaking and listening. In addition, poetry gives the writer freedom to express thoughts and feelings openly, while at the same time inspiring the writer to explore and extend their knowledge, understanding and use of language. Year 8 Enrichment class As part of the Year 8 enrichment tasters some of the girls did hair styling, doing each others hair. ‘This is the group practising hair styling for their themed hair competition that was held at the end of term.
