Newsletter Cobham Visit On Tuesday 19 th March 5 engineers from Cobham visited the Academy to deliver a presentation on the technologies they develop for the Aviation Industry. James Kemmit, Chief Engineer, gave an overview of the Air to Air Refuelling systems which are used across the globe in both commercial and military aviation. In addition to this, two Graduate Trainee’s gave a short talk on their experiences in the industry and their career paths to employment. The young people were all fascinated by the topics, and had the opportunity to get hands on with some of the real life props which the Cobham team brought in with them. We are now planning a follow up event and will be taking a group of selected Engineers to the Cobham factory to learn more about the industry. Levi Jackson “ I found it really interesting seeing the technology in action, then having the chance to get hands on with actual props” Carl Shiers “ I’m really looking forward to visiting the factory and seeing the technology in production” Auschwitz project “6 th Form life at St Aldhelm’s Academy: as part of the Lessons from Auschwitz project, Lauren Gale and Kieran Smith had the privilege to familiarise themselves with the History of the Holocaust. The project consisted in four steps: 1)Orientation seminar where the Young People met with an Aushwitz survivor, 2) The visit to Aushwitz-Brikenau concentration and death camps where students came face to face with the Holocaust tragedy, 3) A follow-up seminar where Young People shared their experience as a group and decided how to share the History of the Holocaust within their community. Finally, the on-going final step requires Lauren and Kieran to work with their community and within the Academy to share their own Lessons From Auschwitz and what they learnt from their experience.”
S P O R T S Football SAA football goes from strength to strength, with 4 teams competing in the PEDSSA leagues, and results steadily improving. Well done to Year 10 boys on their recent success against Ashdown *photo+, the Year 11 boys on a recent win at Carter, and the Year 8 girls on some impressive results in their league. Sports Leaders At the recent Bournemouth Schools Games , we provided the young leaders to officiate the basketball tournament. They were Aaron Eyers, Lauren Gale, Joe Mann and Connor Glover. U19 National Boccia Finals in Sheffield Rowing At the recent Dorset Winter Games Finals, we had a team of Year 8 girls competing in indoor rowing. They all achieved personal best times but were beaten by some excellent performances. Fran , Millie, Poppy and Bea From over 400 young officials trained this year, SAA had two selected to officiate at the Nationals - Alison Lindfield as a referee and Connor Glover as a senior referee mentor. Both were a credit to the Academy with Alison refereeing a semi final and Connor mentoring young officials through the competition.
