Celebrating Your Stampin’ Up! Accomplishments from january through march 2008 Volume 9 Issue 1

every evening when I brush my teeth, I pick up my toothbrush
and notice two different-colored ribbons (one Bashful Blue, the other
Pretty in Pink) tied to the handle. I chose these two colors because
they clash with the color of my toothbrush, and because I pay such
close attention to colors, they catch my attention every single evening.
You may be wondering why in the world I’d want to interrupt my
tooth-brushing routine with a moment of color disharmony. Well, the
ribbons are subtle reminders of two goals I’ve made and am working
toward achieving. I’m a spiritual person and have prayed and read my
scriptures almost daily for much of my life. However, recently I’ve
been less than vigilant about these two personal priorities, and so
I wanted to rededicate myself. The Pretty in Pink ribbon represents
prayer; the Bashful Blue ribbon reminds me of the Bible and other
scriptures. And if I haven’t prayed or read the scriptures yet that
day, the ribbons move me to action!
I hope I haven’t offended anyone by sharing these personal goals;
I am certainly sensitive to the fact that we all have different beliefs.
However, goals are an important part of improving ourselves, which
is a recurring theme throughout this issue of On Stage. Several of
our Stampin’ Up!® principles tie into this topic, including personal
development, change, and efficiency. Goals help us accomplish all
of these and help us become better in various aspects of our lives.
As I thought about the goals I’m currently working on, the ones that
came to mind first were the more personal ones. Of course, I’d love
to clean out my office and get my stamp room organized, but those
are pretty much always on my to-do list! I’m also consistently working
on goals related to Stampin’ Up!, but those are ones we are working
on more as a team at the home office. For this message, I wanted to
share goals of a more personal nature.
Throughout this issue, you’ll read about many demonstrators who
share their own goals. As we learn about others’ goals—and especially
how they’ve achieved those goals—we are often inspired. That’s one of
the most valuable things we can gain from our relationships with each
other—sharing ideas that help us each grow and improve.
I have grown so much from my association with you; you have such a
tremendous impact on me! Thank you for taking the time to share
with me—and with all of us—your goals, dreams, successes, and even
failures, not just in our publications, but at events and other forums
that encourage personal interaction. Together, we can become better
people and work toward our common goal of making a difference in
the lives of those around us!
Antioch, Tennessee
Tailoring Tips
If you’re aiming to increase
your number of recruits this
year, Beckie offers the following
advice. “Don’t exclude
anyone. You never know who
needs Stampin’ Up! You may
look at someone and think,
‘She wouldn’t want to be a
demonstrator; I won’t even
bother asking.’ Ask anyway! You
may find that she has already
been considering it and just
needs some extra motivation. It
doesn’t matter if she joins as a
hobbyist or a businesswoman,
either way you’ve helped her
start something new. You never
know what people need, so
explore all your recruiting
options and achieve your
goals this year!”
Beckie Kareck had never heard
of rubber stamps before she
started receiving hand-stamped
cards from a friend each month
of her first pregnancy. She loved
the images and colors, and soon,
her fascination led her to find a
demonstrator in her area. After
attending a workshop and
putting rubber to paper for the
first time, Beckie stayed up all
night looking through the
catalog. After that one night,
Beckie knew she wanted to join
the Stampin’ Up! family.
As a new mother, being a
demonstrator first appealed to
Beckie because she was able to
stay home with her son while
earning a little extra money for
her family. But mostly she wanted
to be a part of something. As a
demonstrator she had a reason to
get out of the house, to meet new
people, and to do something fun.
Beckie never expected her new
hobby to grow into such a
successful business.
Now, eight years later, with an
average of five workshops a
month, Beckie says, “I eat, sleep,
breathe, and shower Stampin’
Up!” Being a demonstrator has
become much more than a hobby,
and Beckie’s family is very
supportive of her business goals.
“Even the boys love to help when
they can,” she says proudly.
Family: Husband John; sons Josiah (7) and Colton (3)
At the beginning of every year,
Beckie sets new goals for her
business. She believes in her work
and knows she can achieve
anything she puts her mind to.
Whether her goal is to recruit
twenty new demonstrators or to
help her downline achieve
promotions, Beckie always has
something to strive for. “Stampin’
Up! is flexible but not optional,”
she says. “Even if it’s only ten or
fifteen minutes, you have to work
every single day if you want to
reach your goals.” And that is
exactly what she does.
Last July, Beckie decided to
increase sales and take her
business to the next level. By
January, she had already tripled
her customer base and sold as
much in six months as she had
the entire previous year. “I set
my goals, and then I go out and
meet them,” she says. Every
time she looks at her family, her
motivation to achieve those goals
is strengthened. Her desires to
put her children through college
and to help her husband retire
early inspire Beckie to attain each
goal she sets.
If you want to achieve your
goals, you must be honest with
your customers, your downline,
and especially yourself. While
her husband was serving in Iraq
for a year, Beckie realized her
family was going to need more
attention. She took the time to let
her customers know that she was
still there for them, but while her
husband was gone, she needed to
focus solely on her children. It was
a challenge for her business and
her family, but because she was
honest with her customers, they
were loyal. Many even brought
meals and offered to watch her
two children if she ever needed a
break. “My business didn’t grow a
lot that year,” she says, “but I felt
very blessed by the relationships
that were strengthened.”
Setting goals and having the
confidence to go forward and
meet them can be difficult,
but it is also one of the most
important responsibilities of
every business owner. Start small
if you feel you’re not ready to
meet your larger goals. Take a
close look at your business, and
decide what areas need the most
improvement. Then get started! ■
changing lives
one stamp at a time
When manager Megan
Wheeler, from Conway,
Arkansas, noticed that Stampin’
Up! didn’t have a team at her
local Ronald McDonald House,
she didn’t wait for someone else
to take action. “I noticed that
our house was not listed on the
Stampin’ Up! Web Site, so I
contacted the home office to see
what I could do to help get this
off the ground in Arkansas,”
says Megan. Thanks to Megan’s
initiative, Stampin’ Up! now has
an active volunteer program at
the Arkansas House.
The Arkansas Ronald McDonald
House provides a refuge—
financial and emotional—for
families who are facing the
stress of medical treatments for
their children. Megan and her
small but dedicated team work
to make the stay a little more
pleasant for House guests. “We
visit the House once a month,
taking meals, which are much
needed,” says Megan. “We also
prepare stamping projects to
make with the House guests.”
Megan notes that initially,
guests are sometimes unsure
of what to expect from the
volunteer stampers. “We have a
different group of people each
time we go,” she says. “They
don’t know who we are or quite
understand what we’re doing
there; they are just focused on
their circumstances at hand,
and who can blame them?
Inevitably though, after we
visit the House, the families
are smiling, chatting, having
fun, and discussing who will
receive what they just created!
I love that because we have
made a difference!”
Megan also makes time to
volunteer at the Bethlehem
House, a shelter that serves
homeless men, women, and
families. “One of my downline
members and I go to share the
joy of stamping with the
residents, to give them a creative
outlet, to make projects to give
to others, and just to let them
know that someone cares.”
Volunteering on a regular
basis with two charitable
organizations would be enough
to stretch anyone, but Megan
is also a busy Army wife and
actively involved in her church.
How does she find the time for
everything? Planning is key. “It
has to be planned, first of all,”
says Megan. “At each of these
organizations, I plan to go on a
particular day of each month or
quarter. This helps me give to
others, yet still leaves time for
other activities.”
Megan sets goals to help her
focus on what she wants to
achieve, both for herself and
for the people she serves.
“First of all, my personal goal
is to give cheerfully—not
stressed out, not with a feeling
of obligation,” she says. And
since the Ronald McDonald
Family: Husband Deke; dog Dusty
House and Bethlehem House
each have a different purpose,
she sets different goals for her
volunteer work. “For the Ronald
McDonald House, my goal is
to bring joy in the midst of the
families’ struggles and sorrow,”
she says. And for the Bethlehem
House, “I want those stamping
with us to know that they can
create something with their
hands and with their lives. I
want them to be proud of what
they create and to not give up!”
Like most activities,
volunteering is easier—and
more fun—when you do it
with someone else. Megan
is very appreciative of the
demonstrators who volunteer
with her. “I can’t do any of
these service activities without
the work of other giving
demonstrators,” she states.
“The more who give, the less
work there really is, as each
person shares the load.” Megan
and her friends strive to boost
the spirits of those who need
some cheer and relaxation. “I
know I can’t help but be happy
when I make something pretty,”
explains Megan. “And I want
anyone I come in contact with
to know the joy that comes
from creating something with
your own two hands!” ■
megan wheeler
manager
Conway, Arkansas
Megan believes that
you don’t have to
spend a lot of time
or money to make
a difference in the
lives of others.
“You don’t have to give a lot—just
give what you can!” she says. “My
motto from the very beginning of
my demonstratorship has been
‘Changing Lives One Stamp at a
Time!’ I had no idea then how true
that would become.”
cheryl flynn
senior manager | Bradenton, Florida
glenda travelstead
senior executive | Bartlett, Illinois
Family: Husband Casey; daughters Pam and Kelsie (15);
son Jeff; son-in-law Jeff; grandsons Braden (5) and
Parker (6 months)
Q: What do you consider keys to improving yourself?
A : Keys to improving myself are having a positive attitude and
never giving up. I have plenty of disappointments in my
business, just like everyone (like a workshop with $0 in sales!),
but I look for ways to pull myself up and move on. I look for
weak areas and try to come up with something clever to
strengthen them.
Q: How do you accomplish your goals?
A : I identify what I want, and then I figure out what I need to do
to get there. I have a big chart on the door in my stamping room
with all the charts for volume rebates, Great Rewards, incentive
trip, promoting, etc. I give this to new recruits to track their
progress. I encourage them to have monthly events, so they
don’t have to meet their minimum on the last day of a quarter.
Q: Why do you think goals are important?
A : Goals give us something to work toward. For example, with
no set goals, I might be content with $3,000 per month in
sales. I’d have $36,000 in sales that year and be $4,000 short
of earning the incentive trip on Option A. But by setting my
goal at $3,333 per month, I’d earn the trip by holding just
one more event each month. Otherwise, $4,000 at the end
of the year is a big amount to try to sell at the last minute.
Q: What accomplishment are you most proud of at Stampin’ Up!?
A : I’m most proud of the successful business I’ve built. This helps
me provide fun extras for my family, such as new furniture,
carpeting, a pool heater, a flute for my daughter, and vacations,
not to mention groceries! I feel fortunate that I can do this all
from my home and set a schedule that works for my family. All I
can say is set your goals, track your progress, don’t give up, and
continue to reach for the stars. You’re only limited by your own
ability to dream! ■
Family: Husband John; daughters Katy and Sarah
Q: When you first joined Stampin’ Up!, what were your initial goals?
A :Like many of us, I didn’t have a goal when I joined—I just
wanted the discount to shop for myself! That changed quickly
when I saw the potential. My first real goal was to make enough
money to stay home and get my grandson out of public daycare. I
was able to do this almost immediately by holding 8–12
workshops a month and recruiting right from the start.
Q: How have your goals changed through the years?
A:At some point, I shifted from just being in business for myself
and doing everything based on what I wanted, to recruiting more
and helping others get what they want. And in doing that, we all
win! My downline group size has increased each of the seven
years I’ve been a Stampin’ Up! demonstrator. Although my
primary focus has changed to supporting and training my
downline, I also have personal sales and recruiting goals that I
meet each year. Having a balanced business of selling, recruiting,
and training has always been my focus, and it works!
Q: What do you think are the keys to accomplishing a goal?
A : Write it down! And then write how you plan to accomplish that
goal. It’s easy to say you have a goal of selling $1,000 a month,
but if you don’t write that down, then make a plan on how you
will do it, it’s really only a wish. When you write down that you
will schedule a workshop every Thursday evening, and in order to
do that, you will get on the phone and book workshops for the
next four Thursdays, you have an action plan, and your wish has
become a goal. ■
Family: Husband Bruce; daughters Emily (5) and Eliza (3)
Q: What’s the greatest goal you’ve achieved as a demonstrator?
A : Several years into my business, I went through an unexpected
divorce. At that point, I had to either give up my “hobby,” put
my girls in daycare, and get a “real” job, or turn my hobby into a
full-fledged business. Even my divorce attorney told me I’d
make more money slinging burgers than I’d ever make selling
stamps to women. I looked her right in the face and said,
“Watch me.” For the past eight years, I’ve supported my family
100 percent with my Stampin’ Up! business!
Q: What would you tell a new recruit is the key to
accomplishing her goals?
A : The number one key to achieving your goals is to make sure
they’re your goals. Too often we tend to compare ourselves to
others or let others decide what our goals should be. For a
goal to have meaning, it must fulfill a purpose in our lives.
Sometimes knowing what you want is not easy, but once you
define it, setting the goal to achieve it becomes easier.
Q: Why do you feel goals are important?
A : I’ve always felt that goals are similar to road maps. Without
a map, we can still take a journey, perhaps even enjoy it,
but it will take a lot more effort to reach our final
destination. Our lives have purpose, and to fulfill that
purpose, we must have a vision, a plan, a “why.”
Q: Any additional thoughts on goals you’d like to share?
A : It’s easy to be influenced by the negative, but to reach a
goal you have to believe that you can. You have to believe
that in the long run, the achievement of your goal will be
worth it because it matters to you. And just as importantly,
you must partner with those who share your vision and
goals. I truly believe that what we do as demonstrators can
change lives. I’m living proof of that. But that never could
have happened if I hadn’t partnered with a company that
shared that belief. ■
Q: What are some of the ways you help your downline set and
achieve goals?
A :I loved that the convention theme last year was “Dream Big!”
Wow! We all deserve to dream big, don’t we? Goal setting is so
important in reaching those dreams that take you out of your
comfort zone! To encourage my group, I have been putting a
focus on goals that individuals can work toward, such as holding
that first workshop, signing a new recruit, or achieving the
incentive trip to Hawaii. I then help them break down the details
and make resources available to make those goals achievable.
Q: We often refer to “the Stampin’ Up! family.” In your
experience, how is your group like a family?
A : When I think of family, I think of a group of people who are
united unconditionally by something they share. In our group,
that shared characteristic is definitely our love of stamping.
Regardless of our Stampin’ Up! goals, we all love to stamp and
the excitement that filters through the room over a new stamp
set, technique, business promotion, or success is why I
continue to love what I do! I really enjoy watching our group
embrace a new demonstrator in the mix and listening to the
chatter as people share things that work in their businesses.
The Stampin’ Up! family applies in the literal sense as well
because my mom is my upline and continues to be a constant
source of support!
Q: How do you help members of your group when they are going
through a rough time?
A :My goal, not only as an upline, but as a friend, is to be able to
offer encouragement, understanding, and support in tough
situations. The thing that makes Stampin’ Up! so exceptional
is the emphasis on relationships. I am thankful the line
between business and friendships is blurry, as I am a very
open person and really like to know my demonstrators and
customers on a personal level. By truly knowing someone, it
helps to create understanding in difficult times. ■
When the Alaskan Cruise
was announced at convention several
years ago, Beckie was determined to earn
it. By doing so, she moved from hobbyist to
business builder. “Once you’ve built your
business up to earn cruise once,” says Beckie, “it’s a lot easier to
earn again because you already have customers in place.” She
also advises, “Anyone can earn it. You just have to work a little
on your business each day—and it is so worth it!”
Christie loves the unique opportunity of
going on cruise. “If you are working to earn
cruise for the first time,” says Christie, “don’t
stop believing you can do it. Push yourself
a little harder.” Christie has done just that.
A couple of years ago, she decided to increase her sales by
adding clubs to her business, and she earned her first cruise on
sales alone. She earned her next cruise through a combination
of sales and downline leadership.
savoring
every moment
kristi stoughton
executive
Hudson, New Hampshire
Monthly Events: 10–12
Average Monthly Sales: $3,251
Kristi’s advice for
new demonstrators:
“Be wise about how you spend your
time,” she says. “Pacing yourself
is the key to longevity. Don’t aim
to be a shooting star, burning hot
and bright for a short period of
time—aim to be a real star, burning
steadily for years and years. Step
back for a moment and ask yourself,
‘Will this activity help me grow my
business?’ Make goals and to-do
lists that you follow faithfully. Don’t
look at the big picture and say, ‘I
can’t.’ Break it into steps and say, ‘I
can do this one thing, and then I
can do this next thing.’ Those little
actions build upon themselves.”
Maintaining a healthy balance
between business and family
allows Kristi Stoughton, an
executive from Hudson, New
Hampshire, to live life to its
fullest and enjoy every moment
she spends with her family.
That’s not to say that finding
and maintaining that balance
doesn’t take work. “Life is busy
and there are so many demands
that it’s easy to lose sight of
what’s valuable,” Kristi says.
“Sometimes I start spending
my time on whatever need
is the ‘loudest,’ not the most
important.” But finding the
right balance is worth the effort
and the discipline it takes to
maintain. “My sons were just
babies when I became a Stampin’
Up! demonstrator,” Kristi
comments, “and now my oldest
is a sophomore in high school.
The time goes so fast, and I
want to savor every moment. I
definitely don’t want to miss my
children’s growing-up years by
spending all my time working
on swaps!”
To avoid wasting valuable time,
Kristi diligently manages her
business schedule. “I evaluate
each activity to make sure it is
something that will actually
grow my business and not just
busywork,” says Kristi. Adding
that to the advice of her upline,
Family: Husband Brian; sons Cameron (15) and Colby (12)
Amy Johnson, Kristi has
employed a couple of “stampin’
angels” who cut and sort for
camps and classes, pack her
workshop folders, and make
door prizes, along with “a
million other duties.” “Having
stampin’ angels has allowed me
to focus on the businessgrowing
aspects of my business,
so I have more time to spend
with my family.”
Kristi credits her husband and
two sons for helping her
maintain a healthy balance
between work and home. “My
husband, Brian, is my biggest
cheerleader and supporter. We
talk about what direction my
business should take, and he
has the best insight on how to
balance work and family. He is
truly my partner in this
business, just as he is my
partner in everything. My sons,
Cam and Colby, help me find
balance and perspective by just
being who they are. They are so
hysterically funny, and they
keep me from taking myself too
seriously. They help me laugh
and enjoy life, which is a very
important part of balance.”
Goal setting has also played a
large role in Kristi’s success and
in her ability to find and
maintain balance in her life.
Kristi admits she has a “lovehate
relationship with goal
setting, but I can tell you one
thing—it works!” Goal setting
allows Kristi to “pace myself
instead of just working like a
crazy woman all the time. It also
gives me specific actions to take
instead of just wondering what I
need to do next. There’s real
freedom in being able to say, ‘I’ve
finished all of the goal steps on
my to-do list today. I think I’m
going to go play a game with my
kids, and then I’m going to take
a bubble bath.’”
For Kristi, a balanced life is
“putting first things first—using
my time and energy on the
most important things in life.
In my case, that means putting
God and family first. I find that
if I keep the correct priorities,
the rest falls into place.” ■
ehindthescenes
and
avoiding a ride on the demonstrator business roller coaster
For Debra Valder,
an executive from Ballston Spa,
New York, the word consistency
is more than just a buzzword;
it’s the modus operandi that has
driven her success as a
demonstrator. Her emphasis on
developing this trait along with
her unwavering optimism and
energy has helped pave a path of
success for her downline too.
Many demonstrators, Deb
discovered, suffer from what she
terms the roller-coaster effect.
“Demonstrators will often
experience a month or two of
high sales followed by a month
or two of few or no sales,” Deb
explains. She soon realized that
such a cycle can quickly
discourage any demonstrator
and especially a newer one. To
develop the consistency so vital
to combat this problem, Deb
teaches a two-pronged attack.
First, Deb advocates a unique
goal-setting program. She
encourages each member of her
downline to establish two sets
of goals.
She encourages her downline to
set minimum goals in sales,
recruiting, etc. These minimums
are established based on the
demonstrator’s lowest sales and
recruiting months from the
previous year or those levels
necessary to maintain her title.
“Shoot low so that you can
achieve them and feel like you’ve
accomplished something,” says
Deb. She tells each downline
member to post these goals
somewhere visible on the left
side of her computer.
Then, she encourages each
member of her downline to
establish the second set of goals
based on how they think they
could improve with a little more
effort, training, and support.
These goals are often based on
their best selling and recruiting
months from the previous year.
These goals are posted on the
right side of the computer. The
great thing about this goalsetting
technique is that even if a
downline member fails to meet
her maximum goals, she can still
aim to beat the minimum ones.
“Ideally,” Deb explains, “she
should be consistently
somewhere in between the high
and the low goal each month.”
The second part to leveling out
the dreaded roller-coaster effect
is to plan events, workshops, and
meetings months in advance.
Deb encourages her downline to
plan and write down events at
least three months in advance.
“I’ve discovered that if
something’s written down and
posted online, you’re obligated to
do it. It makes you accountable,”
says Deb. “I’ve seen my downline
members grow. It motivates
them to hold the event when it’s
on their calendar.”
Deb’s example has certainly
helped drive this point home to
Family: Husband Kevin
her downline. She hosts monthly
meetings with her first-level
downline and meetings every
other month with her downline
levels two through five. The
meetings are held regularly and
Deb posts all of the meeting
dates, times, and swap themes
each January for the upcoming
year on her personal web site. In
these meetings, she not only
shares new creative techniques,
projects, and products with her
downline, she also follows up on
each downline member’s goals
and provides support and
encouragement. She even tells
those demonstrators in her
indirect downline who feel
unsupported because of the lack
of a direct upline or an inactive
upline, “You have me.”
Finally, Deb, a self-proclaimed
data junkie, pores over the
downline reports, looking for any
tidbit of information she can use
to motivate and encourage each
member of her downline to help
them achieve their goals. If a new
demonstrator is just short of a
minimum or a more experienced
demonstrator is just short of a
milestone, Deb sends a quick
e-mail to encourage them and to
provide advice. ■
debra valder
executive
Ballston Spa, New York
Dazzling Diamonds
Debra’s also adept at identifying and
cultivating business builders in her
downline. She has created a program
for her most business-oriented
demonstrators called Dazzling
Diamonds. During each monthly
meeting, she challenges these
demonstrators to achieve higher
sales, recruiting, and organizational
goals to help them build their
business. For example, she might
encourage them to schedule three
months of classes in advance on their
Demonstrator Business Web Site
calendar. While they don’t have to
plan the classes that far in advance,
scheduling a date makes them
accountable to the customers who
register for the event. Or, she might
push them to hold workshops early in
the month—which in turn allows them
to review their monthly totals and
helps them determine how much
they still need to do to achieve their
monthly goals.
love
your job
Can you really make money and have
this much fun? Meet Tamie Ackerson.
tamie ackerson
manager
Corunna, Michigan
Monthly Events: 8—12
Average Monthly Sales: $5,357
Tamie has two
different types of
stamp camps each
month—
a “regular” camp and a “product”
camp. She told us about one
“product” camp she held recently.
It was a punch camp, with three
punches included in the $40
registration fee. Customers
made eight cards in 2-1/2 hours
and got to try several punches.
Sounds easy enough, and what a
great way to get your customers’
hands on different punches! Her
“regular” camps are set up like
an open house. At one camp, for
example, customers paid $10 to
make eight quick and cute cards,
or they could place a $25 order
and come to the camp for free.
She had 25–35 people show up
between 2:00 and 6:00 PM!
If you ask Tamie Ackerson,
a manager from Corunna,
Michigan, what her business is
all about, she can sum it up in a
single word: “Fun!” But there’s
more to learn from Tamie than
just how to have fun stamping
(though she could offer some
great ideas in that area). Her
quarterly sales figures are jawdropping:
she’s had over
$12,000 in sales every quarter
for the past several years. How
does she do it? We set out to
find the answer.
We started by asking about her
events. Tamie plans two stamp
camps a month (see sidebar),
and typically holds six to ten
workshops. “A lot of the
workshops are hosted by repeat
customers,” she explains. “And I
meet new people at those.”
Tamie’s strong customer base
regularly attends her events and
holds workshops . . . but her
secret lies in the word-of-mouth
marketing these loyal customers
provide for her! At a recent
event, Tamie overheard two
ladies talking while they
stamped. “They said they liked
coming to my camps because I
spoil them. They liked that I had
everything already cut out for
them.” It seems like such a
simple thing, but customers
appreciate it. And they tell their
friends. “I’m always getting
Family: Husband Steve; daughters Heather and
Ashley (17)
called out of the blue by people
who have heard about my
events,” says Tamie.
Then Tamie laughs. “I really do
spoil my customers.” And she
loves doing it, whether she’s
cutting out card stock for
customers or providing them
with a smorgasbord of creative
ideas. “I’m a speed stamper, and
I demonstrate seven projects,
which I give to the workshop
hostess. Plus, I always give the
hostess cards outside of the
workshop. I send her a card two
weeks before her workshop with
a reminder to send out her
invites and a card one week
before reminding her to follow
up with her guests for RSVPs.
Then I send her a thank-you card
after the workshop.” Hostesses
love all the cards and projects
they get for hosting a workshop
with Tamie! And they tell their
friends to book workshops too.
Customers relate to Tamie
because she’s such an enthusiast
for the product and for stamping
in general. They pick up on her
cheerful, gung-ho attitude. “Any
time a new product comes out,
and I see it used on a sample I
love, I think ‘I gotta have it!’”
she admits happily. “My
customers do the same thing.
It’s all about the samples.” And
with all the fun projects Tamie
demonstrates at her workshops,
customers have a lot of
opportunity to fall in love with
stamp sets and accessories. “It
makes my night when customers
say ‘Oh! Now I have to add to my
order!’ It makes me think, ‘Yes! I
did my job.’”
But even so, Tamie confesses
that her workshops don’t feel
like a job to her. “I’m just having
fun!” she says. “I just be myself. I
make fun of myself when I screw
up, and it makes people feel
comfortable around me.”
After our conversation, it’s easy
to see why Tamie’s definition of
her business is “Fun!” It’s that
sense of fun that shapes her
business. It translates into an
ease with herself, an enthusiasm
for the products, and the way
she spoils her customers. It
keeps Tamie’s sales high and her
customers coming back to her
again and again. ■
specialguestartist
an inspiring life
As you can see from her
Welcome Little One scrapbook
page, Stasia Sloma is an excellent
aunt. When Stampin’ Up! asked
Stasia to make a scrapbook page
and card for us as a special guest
artist for this issue of On Stage,
she made sure she didn’t leave
her nephew out of the fun. She
explains, “Michael was born after
this picture of our family was
taken, and I wanted to include
him somehow so years from now
he wouldn’t see this article and
say, ‘Hey, where am I?’ So, I chose
him as the subject of my
scrapbook page.”
Scrapbook pages are Stasia’s
favorite type of project to make.
“I love how the photos combined
with stories make everything
come to life.” Stasia finds
inspiration for her projects just
about everywhere, including on
the Demonstrator Web Site and
in Stampin’ Success. “I’ll see
something I like and think, ‘I
could do that on this project or
on that project,’ and every time a
new product comes out, like Diecut
Blooms, I’ll think of all kinds
of new things I can do using
them.” In addition, when Stasia
sees things she likes or that
inspire her, she saves them
and often refers back to them
for ideas.
Stasia describes her project
designs as simple and neat. “A
friend of mine put it this way,”
explains Stasia, “‘they’re not
overdone and not underdone.’ I
usually use two to three colors
and a couple of embellishments.
When it looks like the project
needs something more, I’ll go the
simple route—pop up something
with a Stampin’ Dimensional,
paper pierce, or use Dazzling
Diamonds.” Stasia claims she
loves Stampin’ Dimensionals so
much she should own stock
in them!
Inspiration combined with her
amazing talents has definitely
propelled Stasia to great
accomplishments. A card she
created recently won in the
Hello/Thinking of You category
of PaperCrafts magazine’s World
Card Making Day contest.
Coincidentally, we selected the
same fantastic card as an
honorable mention for On Stage
Volume 8, Issue 4. You may also
remember seeing Stasia’s
handiwork as the inspiration for
the cover of On Stage Volume 7,
Issue 4. These successes have
inspired Stasia to continue
learning new things and to
challenge her skills by submitting
projects for more contests. We’re
sure to see more wonderful
creations from her! ■
one of Amy’s
projects, check out
this issue’s Online
Extras.
amy’s tips for
basic scrapbooking:
• Start simply with basic layering
and colors. Use a few basic
accessories, such as ribbon
or brads.
• Copy something from the
catalog or a class—as you
practice you’ll be able to branch
out on your own
Amy Barnes, a senior
associate from Firestone,
Colorado, doesn’t usually
scrapbook. With two lively boys
and an active life, she usually
doesn’t have the time to devote to
completing a scrapbook. However,
when she does scrapbook,
enjoyable things happen. Amy
loves a challenge, and stretches
herself artistically by using color
combinations she sees others
use to step out of her comfort
zone. She recently stretched
herself even more by entering a
scrapbook page in one of Stampin’
Up!’s contests. “Entering the
contest was one way I challenged
myself,” Amy says. “I had never
entered a contest before, and I
thought I should try.”
Even though Amy doesn’t
scrapbook frequently, she feels
that cards and scrapbook pages
aren’t that different. For
example, you look at color
combinations the same way on
both project types, use the same
tools, and create a balanced
layout. The purpose is just
different. In the case of her
Lookin’ Good page, she sat down
with the goal of using the Jumbo
eyelets so she could enter the
What Big Eyes You Have contest.
“I usually have to clear away the
disaster from the last project first
though!” Amy chuckles.
For this page, Amy lined up lots
of Jumbo eyelets at first, but
didn’t really like it. She then
noticed that two eyelets together
Family: Husband Scott; sons Grant (5) and Logan (3)
looked like a pair of eyes. The
page really started taking shape
after this connection. “The eyes
reminded me of binoculars, and
the photos we had just taken in
the mountains with my boys
looking through binoculars,” Amy
remembers. “I had just printed
the photos, and they were sitting
on my desk. So I used them.”
Since the eyelets and binocular
lenses were round, Amy decided
the photos should be round as
well. She used the Coluzzle
Cutting System, cans, and (of
course) Circle punches for the
various circles. Her page colors
came from the photos—the boys’
shirts and the mountains behind
them in particular. “It turned out
cute!” Amy says.
“Having a theme
definitely helped.”
Amy says that her
projects frequently
change between
conception and the
finished product,
and she finds it
rewarding when a
page turns out
better than she had
originally expected.
“Nothing is perfect
the first time you
try it,” she shares.
“It’s like riding a bike—the first
time you try you aren’t going to
be perfect.” Amy says that when
her customers get frustrated that
their projects don’t turn out right
the first time, she reminds them
that it just takes practice. ■
