FUNERAL ARRANGEMENTS
Please contact Fr. Lou or Sister Ann first when making funeral
arrangements (time, etc.) rather than making these arrangements
through the funeral home. This allows Fr. Lou to be with the family
during this difficult time of decision making and can also cut down on
the frustration of waiting for arrangements to be verified through
several parties.
MISSION OF OUR PARISH
God calls us to proclaim The Word
to celebrate our call
in the service of one another.
In our call of service
we accept the responsibility
to evangelize within our own community
and beyond…
to collaborate in the spirit of ecumenism.
As a sacramental people
we come together for Word and nourishment,
welcoming and celebrating new life
through Baptism,
Confirmation,
Eucharist.
We are a community that celebrates
God’s healing in the Sacraments of Reconciliation
and the Anointing of the sick,
and God’s love in the Sacrament of Marriage
and Ordination.
We recognize the dignity of each person,
striving to be a more just and peaceful society.
We recognize that stewardship is an integral part
of our Christian mission and will commit
ourselves to use resources in a wise manner.
Something to think about: When preparing your estate, please consider St. Ann, your parish family, in your will.
Your gift can help the parish continue Faith Community in the future.
FR. LOU’S REFLECTION
“War machine with implications”
I can still vividly see it as if it was only yesterday:
watching the 1953 movie “War of the Worlds.”
Though seven at the time,
I was so scared to see those machines
coming from Mars,
setting cites on fire,
destroying everything around them,
creating havoc and turmoil,
that I had nightmares
for several nights there after.
Well, that’s the way
many innocent people,
in foreign countries feel
when U.S.-made drones slam
into homes of suspected terrorists.
And though successful at times in
killing their intended targets,
many times, however,
drones strike a home
of a family,
including children.
The Associated Press,
not too long ago,
estimated that some four thousand
children have been killed in the on-going
War of the Drones,
which is, in my view, unacceptable.
Of course “bad guys”
are generally targeted and killed,
lessening the world misguided people,
bent to do violence to gain footing
for their own agenda.
To capture individuals like these
is desirable---but not by the use of drones.
Several months ago,
I wrote a reflection questioning America’s reliance
on drones and its mass production.
Today over seventy countries
have the technology to place drones
literally across the skies.
And they are relatively inexpensive.
As these drones
are mass-produced their capacity will expand
as well, creating a more ominous presence
for our future.
I view it as a moral issue
when lives are taken, especially in a foreign land.
My concern is also, as it applies to American citizens,
the neglect of constitutional rights,
most importantly with regards to the right
of government to “eavesdrop”
in ways never thought of.
Life and freedom: is it ours or not?
OPERATION RICE BOWL: Did you know that many
people around the world wake up each morning not
knowing if they will have enough to eat? In the small
West African nation of Burkina Faso, 80% of the
population are small farmers. Frequent droughts make it
difficult to produce enough food for the year. Often,
farmers can only grow enough to feed their families for 7
months. The rest of the year is called “the hungry
season”. This week we give to CRS Rice Bowl to help
small farmers around the world.
Elementary CF families, your child received a Rice Bowl
in their CF class last week. Please be sure to use the
easy resources to deepen your family’s Lenten
experience of prayer, fasting and almsgiving. This Lent
may we deepen our relationship with Christ and recognize
His face in the faces of all our brothers and sisters in
need. If you did not receive a rice bowl and would like to
take part in this Lenten program, contact Judy in the CF
Office.
BAPTISM PREPARATION: Call the parish office to
register for Baptism preparation classes and to schedule
the two preparation sessions are Tuesdays, April 9 & 16.
Parents please note – you must be registered in the
SPECIAL REFLECTION BY FR. LOU
“Another election, a pope this time”, Pt. 1
I, for one, was not terribly surprised
at the news the other morning that Pope Benedict XVI
has decided to resign from the “Chair of Peter.”
His election, back in 2005, was spectacular,
given his close relationship
with his predecessor, John Paul II.
Together, these two giants of the Church,
have established an orthodoxy
within the Church structure
that was both celebrated and
lamented for the past thirty years.
John Paul was a philosopher
whereas Benedict is the theologian.
Benedict was guardian of that orthodoxy
when he was appointed
Prefect of the Congregation
for the Doctrine of the Faith.
In other words, he defended the Church
from being diluted in any way from
those who would misdirect our core
beliefs as handed down
from the Apostles.
What I admired the most about Pope Benedict
is that he came upon the papacy
that was shattered---and helped steer
the Church in rough waters
that didn’t topple it over.
Despite following a master personality
like John Paul,
Benedict was humble and accepted
being “the one who followed JPII.”
In my follow-up reflection,
I will cite some of my disappointments
with Benedict and the missed opportunity, I believe,
for the Church would have gained stature
in our era of confusion within the Church.
And finally, in school we were taught
that Christopher Columbus discovered
America in 1492---whereas
Benedict is the first pope to resign
since Gregory in 1415---that
for a pope to come to terms
with the frailties of life is
amazing to me---and to his credit
gave us a magnanimous gesture:
who willingly gives up power and
status these days?
Popes make headlines by dying---not the death itself.
This made the pope much more human to me.
I remember when I was a kid in the orphanage,
the nuns would have us come to the chapel
to sing the song, “Long Live the Pope”---
for back then, it was an election till death.
A PRAYER FOR RESOLUTION IN IRAN
I pray, we, our community pray, O Lord God, for a good
and just outcome in the discussions that are currently on
going with Iran and five other nations, including our country.
We implore that you inspire each person in these deliberations
to act with a sincere conscience and a deep respect
for humanity. We ask, Lord God, that the divine hand of
your Son, Jesus, lead the way for all nations to let go of all
weapons of mass destruction---and for those countries
seeking nuclear weapons who harbor sinister thoughts in
the hope of eliminating their perceived grievousness by
acts of destruction. We pray that Mary, the Queen of
Peace, may shed her light to enkindle greater understanding
among all nations in their hope of living without the
fear of nuclear attack or retaliation.
Each Thursday, from 9:00-9:15am I will invite our community
to join me in prayer in our chapel, and also join me in
a day of fasting for peace in our world —- and for life that
is either denied or taken away from others (i.e., abortion
and capital punishment).
Gracious wonderful God, we thank you for the end of our
nation’s war in Iraq and the ending war in Afghanistan.
We ask you to continue to comfort those who suffer loss of
life. Heal all the wounded and bless those who labor for a
world without strife. Bless our soldiers and personnel in
these war-torn countries that they may see the fruits of
their labor. Amen.
