Please contact Fr. Lou or Sister Ann first when making funeral
arrangements (time, etc.) rather than making these arrangements
through the funeral home. This allows Fr. Lou to be with the family
during this difficult time of decision making and can also cut down on
the frustration of waiting for arrangements to be verified through
several parties.

FR. LOU’S REFLECTION
“Making right decisions”
“…When they brought the sword before him
King Solomon said, ‘Cut the living child
in two, and give half to one woman and
half to the other.’
(1 kgs. 3: 24b,ff)
I think we all have heard that story in 1 Kings 3.
It is a story of two mothers saying that the living
son was theirs.
The Wisdom of King Solomon came forth
for he knew if he did damage to the ‘living’ son
the real mother would rather see him go to
the woman who was not the real mother
than to have her son killed.
Watching the George Zimmerman trial
a week or so ago,
I couldn’t help but think of this story
of the “wisdom of Solomon”
as two mothers took the stand,
under oath,
saying that the voice on tape
was the voice of their son
calling for help,
trying to avoid death.
Zimmerman is accused
of killing Trayvon Martin in the heat of
of a struggle.
Zimmerman maintains that it was
self-defense.
Watching the two mothers testify
that the voice was their son
was heart-wrenching for me---
and the jury will be called
to be Solomon in this case.
The love of a mother
for her child has to be one of the strongest
loves on earth.
But sometimes it doesn’t work out that way.
Take Isaiah 49: 14, for example,
where the prophet mentions
the love of a mother for her child---
but should she forget,
Isaiah tells us that God doesn’t.
Our God
will never abandon us,
will never leave us orphaned,
will never grow tired of us,
will never allow us to fall endlessly,
will never forsake us to the evil one---
but pitfalls will happen
and when those times come
we ought to keep Solomon in mind---
for our God is greater.

I want to again thank the parish of St. Ann
for their wonderful send-off liturgy and
hospitality. As I said from the ambo, I will
keep all of you in my prayers and hope
you will do the same for me as well.

THE PASS IT ON COMMITTEE is proud to announce
that St Ann Church has been awarded a
John Fricano Grant for the PASS IT ON Ministry.
The Fricano Grant funds will be used to provide
new necessity items and will benefit many
families in need at our Fall 2013 and Spring
2014 event. Thank you to all our supporters,
donors and volunteers who have assisted with
the continued growth of this ministry. Begun in
2008, we have served thousands of children in
the area with much needed clothes, baby furniture,
books, shoes and toys.

Christian Formation
CHRISTIAN FORMATION 2013-2014: If you have a child age
4 (by Sept. 30, 2013) through 12 th grade who was not in our
program last year, call Judy in the CF office at 526-2548 and
we will mail you the forms for the 2013 – 2014 year.
FIRST EUCHARIST/ FIRST RECONCILIATION SACRAMEN-
TAL POLICY: Students 2 nd grade and older are invited to prepare
for these sacraments. Students must attend the regular
religious education program, as well as several Sacramental
Preparation sessions. Families should be participating in the
sacramental life of the church regularly. Please call Judy at
526-2548 for registration forms.
CONFIRMATION SACRAMENTAL POLICY: Youth may begin
preparing for Confirmation when they are in the 10 th – 12 th
grade and enrolled in the parish Christian Formation program.
PARENTS/ PARISHIONERS: Do you want to help the children
of St. Ann grow in their faith? Do you enjoy sharing the Good
News with children? Consider being a catechist for our 2013-
2014 Christian Formation classes or a facilitator for Children’s
Liturgy of the Word. Please call Judy at 526-2548 or jhopkinson@stanncc.com
if you would like to help with children ages
pre-Kindergarten through grade 5.
VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL 2013: We would like to thank
Nancy Robbins and the VBS team who gave lots of time and
energy to create an epic Kingdom Rock Adventure for the children!
124 children had a great time and came to know that we
can stand strong for God! Special thanks to our adult leaders
and our 35 youth who volunteered as crew leaders and helped
with games, crafts, drama, snack, preschool and music. Thank
you to children and parents for donating to our Kid to Kid mission.
The families brought in school supplies to fill backpacks
for needy children in the area so they will be able to start school
with the necessary supplies. Thank you to all parishioners
who donated supplies for the week!
BAPTISM PREPARATION: The next parish celebration of
Baptism is July 20 and July 21 at all liturgies. Call the parish
office (526-2548). The 2 nd parent session is July 16 at 7:30 pm
in the Church.
VIRTUS/ BACKGROUND CHECKS: Sessions in the Richmond
area: Wed. July 10 at 6:00pm at St. Bridget’s and Sat.
July 20 at 1:00 pm at St. Bridget’s. You must be over 18 to
attend a VIRTUS session. All volunteers over 18 who work
with children must also complete Background checks.
Additional Fundraiser Information
As we previously announced, thanks to
your support, we made a $1138 profit
selling Cheese Steaks and Meatball Hoagies.
As we indicated, this money helps
cover some of the picnic costs.
Also, we earned a $505 profit on the
Steak Dinner! Again, thanks to your support,
we will further reduce the cost of our
Fall picnic.

Justice & Peace
OUR DAILY BREAD
FOOD PANTRY - It has
been a real struggle for
some of our friends and
neighbors to keep their
homes cool enough to live
and still feed their families.
Please do what you
can to help those people.
Some are elderly,
some with small children
and some with medical problems who can not
stand the heat. Let us all reach out and help by
providing food to those who come to us in their
time of need. This week we are in need of canned
salmon, tuna, spaghetti sauce, macaroni &
cheese, and jelly. Toothpaste, bar soap and deodorant
are also much appreciated. Thank you
for serving the Lord and One Another.

PARISH PASTORAL COUNCIL MINUTES – JUNE 27, 2013
Present: Fr. Lou, Eric Ertzner, Lesha Berkel, George Minson, Beverly
Freed, Pat Ewen, Rob Kellis (Finance Council Chair), Jim
Ayres.
Absent: Ericka Young, Robert Flores, Joyce Navary, Karl Stafflinger,
Sr. Ann. The meeting opened with a prayer.
Finance Report: Rob presented financial data through 11 months.
He reported that, overall, it was a good year financially for St. Ann.
He added that we received $29,441 from our insurance claim regarding
the unfortunate circumstances surrounding our former bookkeeper.
$20,000 of this was put back into the fund designated for the
future purchase of a pastor’s house. The remaining $9441 was put
into our operating account.
Rob informed the Council that 3 bids have been accepted for recarpeting
the Worship space. They range from $27,000 to $31,000.
The Facilities Committee is reviewing that information. The target
date for installation would still be this summer. The Chapel may be
excluded from this re-carpeting effort to save $3000 - $4000.
Rob reported on the Increased Offering Program. Nearly one third of
the Parish responded (excellent response rate); more than a $95,000
increase in Sunday collections has been committed; the average increase
was over 30%. These are all excellent results.
Rob next discussed the 2013/2014 budget. In it, we have projected
$700,000 in Sunday collection income. This is an increase over this
year’s projected total by approximately $50,000. With the commitments
from the Increased Offering Program, this is a fairly conservative
objective.
The Council then discussed the fact that the vendor (Cathedral Corp)
for the Increased Offering Program is committed to working with St.
Ann for three years. They will help us get reminders and updates
published to the Parish on a regular basis.
Minutes: While reviewing the minutes from the May 23 meeting a
question was raised regarding the accuracy of the second to last paragraph
(“The Council agreed that once a parishioner gives formal
notification of their intent to resign, they will also have resigned
from any committees or ministries they are currently working with.”)
Some of the Council felt that more discretion in these situations was
discussed in May.
Job Posting Update: Pat Clement will start on July 1 as our Director
of Religious Education. The intention is to have her manage all
aspects of Religious Education for the Parish. With her extensive
background and experience, she is expected to strengthen all of our
XF programs.
The search committee continues to seek a replacement for Sr. Ann.
After reviewing several resumes, the committee interviewed 5 – 6
candidates. From there, they chose two for additional interviews.
They will be held on July 10.
Next the vacant Youth Minister position was discussed. While many
options have been reviewed (and continue to be), it is clear that the
program needs some stability. Having changed this position twice in
the past 4 years it is impossible to judge the potential of a wellorganized
youth ministry. Fr. Lou has interviewed an experienced
candidate and has asked additional, involved parishioners to interview
her as well. Fr. Lou would like to finalize this in July.
George commented that (in other faiths) this is the second most important
position they hire (after the pastor). He suggested that getting
our youth involved with parish life is critical for the future of the
Church.
Sr. Ann: Fr. Lou discussed this weekend’s Masses with Sr. Ann
making farewell comments to the Parish. There will be a special
blessing at each Mass, followed by a special song for this occasion.
This will be followed by hospitality The Council expressed its sincere
gratitude for all Sr. Ann has meant to this community. All acknowledged
that she will be greatly missed and very difficult to replace.
George moved to adjourn; Pat seconded.
The meeting closed with a prayer.

A PRAYER FOR RESOLUTION IN IRAN
I pray, we, our community pray, O Lord God, for a good and
just outcome in the discussions that are currently on going with
Iran and five other nations, including our country. We implore
that you inspire each person in these deliberations to act with a
sincere conscience and a deep respect for humanity. We ask,
Lord God, that the divine hand of your Son, Jesus, lead the way
for all nations to let go of all weapons of mass destruction---
and for those countries seeking nuclear weapons who harbor
sinister thoughts in the hope of eliminating their perceived
grievousness by acts of destruction. We pray that Mary, the
Queen of Peace, may shed her light to enkindle greater understanding
among all nations in their hope of living without the
fear of nuclear attack or retaliation.
Each Thursday, from 9:00-9:15am I will invite our community
to join me in prayer in our chapel, and also join me in a day of
fasting for peace in our world —- and for life that is either
denied or taken away from others (i.e., abortion and capital
punishment).
Gracious wonderful God, we thank you for the end of our nation’s
war in Iraq and the ending war in Afghanistan. We ask
you to continue to comfort those who suffer loss of life. Heal
all the wounded and bless those who labor for a world without
strife. Bless our soldiers and personnel in these war-torn countries
that they may see the fruits of their labor. Amen.
