FR. LOU’S REFLECTION “Making right decisions” “…When they brought the sword before him King Solomon said, ‘Cut the living child in two, and give half to one woman and half to the other.’ (1 kgs. 3: 24b,ff) I think we all have heard that story in 1 Kings 3. It is a story of two mothers saying that the living son was theirs. The Wisdom of King Solomon came forth for he knew if he did damage to the ‘living’ son the real mother would rather see him go to the woman who was not the real mother than to have her son killed. Watching the George Zimmerman trial a week or so ago, I couldn’t help but think of this story of the “wisdom of Solomon” as two mothers took the stand, under oath, saying that the voice on tape was the voice of their son calling for help, trying to avoid death. Zimmerman is accused of killing Trayvon Martin in the heat of of a struggle. Zimmerman maintains that it was self-defense. Watching the two mothers testify that the voice was their son was heart-wrenching for me--- and the jury will be called to be Solomon in this case. The love of a mother for her child has to be one of the strongest loves on earth. But sometimes it doesn’t work out that way. Take Isaiah 49: 14, for example, where the prophet mentions the love of a mother for her child--- but should she forget, Isaiah tells us that God doesn’t. Our God will never abandon us, will never leave us orphaned, will never grow tired of us, will never allow us to fall endlessly, will never forsake us to the evil one--- but pitfalls will happen and when those times come we ought to keep Solomon in mind--- for our God is greater. copyright, 2013, Lou Ruoff Please Keep in Prayer Pastoral Care Carmen Anderson, Jean Burgess, Roseann Chiodo, Ruth Livesay, Nina Munford, Alisha Owczarski, Fr. Sr. Ann THE PASS IT ON COMMITTEE is proud to announce that St Ann Church has been awarded a John Fricano Grant for the PASS IT ON Ministry. The Fricano Grant funds will be used to provide new necessity items and will benefit many families in need at our Fall 2013 and Spring 2014 event. Thank you to all our supporters, donors and volunteers who have assisted with the continued growth of this ministry. Begun in 2008, we have served thousands of children in the area with much needed clothes, baby furniture, books, shoes and toys. Christian Formation CHRISTIAN FORMATION 2013-2014: If you have a child age 4 (by Sept. 30, 2013) through 12 th grade who was not in our program last year, call Judy in the CF office at 526-2548 and we will mail you the forms for the 2013 – 2014 year. FIRST EUCHARIST/ FIRST RECONCILIATION SACRAMEN- TAL POLICY: Students 2 nd grade and older are invited to prepare for these sacraments. Students must attend the regular religious education program, as well as several Sacramental Preparation sessions. Families should be participating in the sacramental life of the church regularly. Please call Judy at 526-2548 for registration forms. CONFIRMATION SACRAMENTAL POLICY: Youth may begin preparing for Confirmation when they are in the 10 th – 12 th grade and enrolled in the parish Christian Formation program. PARENTS/ PARISHIONERS: Do you want to help the children of St. Ann grow in their faith? Do you enjoy sharing the Good News with children? Consider being a catechist for our 2013- 2014 Christian Formation classes or a facilitator for Children’s Liturgy of the Word. Please call Judy at 526-2548 or jhopkinson@stanncc.com if you would like to help with children ages pre-Kindergarten through grade 5. VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL 2013: We would like to thank Nancy Robbins and the VBS team who gave lots of time and energy to create an epic Kingdom Rock Adventure for the children! 124 children had a great time and came to know that we can stand strong for God! Special thanks to our adult leaders and our 35 youth who volunteered as crew leaders and helped with games, crafts, drama, snack, preschool and music. Thank you to children and parents for donating to our Kid to Kid mission. The families brought in school supplies to fill backpacks for needy children in the area so they will be able to start school with the necessary supplies. Thank you to all parishioners who donated supplies for the week! BAPTISM PREPARATION: The next parish celebration of Baptism is July 20 and July 21 at all liturgies. Call the parish office (526-2548). The 2 nd parent session is July 16 at 7:30 pm in the Church. VIRTUS/ BACKGROUND CHECKS: Sessions in the Richmond area: Wed. July 10 at 6:00pm at St. Bridget’s and Sat. July 20 at 1:00 pm at St. Bridget’s. You must be over 18 to attend a VIRTUS session. All volunteers over 18 who work with children must also complete Background checks. Additional Fundraiser Information As we previously announced, thanks to your support, we made a $1138 profit selling Cheese Steaks and Meatball Hoagies. As we indicated, this money helps cover some of the picnic costs. Also, we earned a $505 profit on the Steak Dinner! Again, thanks to your support, we will further reduce the cost of our Fall picnic. ************************************************ ATTENTION WEEK-DAY MASS GO- ERS— If you are a regular, or even an occasional weekday Mass attendee here at St. Ann, you may want to know that if a Mass has to be canceled or rescheduled, whenever possible, Fr. Lou tries to make sure that it is announced on our Prayer Email List. If you are not receiving these notifications, please contact the parish office, 526-2548 to have your email added to the list. ************************************************ Justice & Peace OUR DAILY BREAD FOOD PANTRY - It has been a real struggle for some of our friends and neighbors to keep their homes cool enough to live and still feed their families. Please do what you can to help those people. Some are elderly, some with small children and some with medical problems who can not stand the heat. Let us all reach out and help by providing food to those who come to us in their time of need. This week we are in need of canned salmon, tuna, spaghetti sauce, macaroni & cheese, and jelly. Toothpaste, bar soap and deodorant are also much appreciated. Thank you for serving the Lord and One Another.
