FUNERAL ARRANGEMENTS
Please contact Fr. Lou or Sister Ann first when making funeral
arrangements (time, etc.) rather than making these arrangements
through the funeral home. This allows Fr. Lou to be with the family
during this difficult time of decision making and can also cut down on
the frustration of waiting for arrangements to be verified through
several parties.

“In war, it’s always the children”

you were born into this evil world
where man is killing man
and no one knows why…”

Jesus was very adamant against any disciple
who would lead or cause “these little ones”
to sin.”
How many times have we seen pictures
in our newspapers,
in our magazines
on our TV screens
where little ones, just kids,
are carrying automatic weapons
ready for kill,
to kill?
What happened in the Houla region of Syria
should cause all of us to cry bloody murder.
108 victims were massacred,
most of them children.
Syria has been crumpling from civil unrest,
war if you want,
because a dictator doesn’t want to quit.
This scene of children
dying in grown-up wars
is just too despicable to even contemplate---
but this author must.
Children are always in the firing range,
as well as mothers and women,
the aged and the crippled
when it comes to war.
Dead children line the roads by the scores
in the Mexican drug war;
in Somali Civil war, many thousands
are buried without their names known;
in Iraq, where internal bitterness continues, and
death by bombing seems to be the weapon of choice;
in Colombia, armed conflict has taken the lives of
some 200,000 in the past fifty years…
And even in our own America,
teens killing teens seems to be an every
night occurrence in the slums of our cities.
But someone had to start it,
be it with hate and envy,
with the cause of nationalism,
with money, drugs, sex---
and nothing would be complete without
the weapons.
Someone is making out
while wars are fought
and our children,
God’s children are paying the price.

PASS IT ON—Thank you to all who were involved with
Pass It On this spring! We opened our doors Saturday
morning, May 12th, with a hall full of organized donations,
ready to serve over 620 children in need (over 280
Families attended). Every volunteer and donor played a
big part in making this a reality. We thank you for all the
clothes & supplies donated, the food provided for the
volunteers, the hours dedicated to planning, moving, organizing
and sorting the donations and serving those in
need. Thank you for a making a difference in the world!
EMPLOYMENT ASSISTANCE MINISTRY – St. Ann parish
has an ongoing committee dedicated to helping those
within the parish that are seeking employment. If you are
in need of this service, please contact Sr. Ann or Fr. Lou
at 526-2548. If you wish to volunteer for this ministry or
are aware of a job opportunity, please contact Tom

MINISTRY TO THE SICK – Our Eucharistic outreach
ministers look forward to bringing God’s word, the Eucharist
and the love of the community to all those who are ill.
If we can be of service to you or a member of your family,

HOSPITAL VISITATION REMINDER – If you or a family
member are in the hospital and would like to be visited,
please call the church office (526-2548) and inform Fr.
Lou and/or Sister Ann. We have no other way of knowing
that there is someone in the hospital who would like
to be visited. Thank you.
HAVE YOU OR A FAMILY MEMBER BEEN DIAG-
NOSED WITH CANCER? Has your world been turned
upside down and you don’t know where to get accurate
information? Lance Armstrong’s organization has written
a Livestrong Guidebook and a Guidebook Planner and
Journal “to help you not only live, but live life on your
terms”. It takes you from the diagnosis to your treatment
to your aftercare. The book contains 26 pages of resource
information. The response from many cancer
patients has been “I wish I had those books” when I was
first diagnosed. The books may be obtained from Sister
Ann for a small fee of $2.50. If you find these books are
not helpful to you or your family please return them to
Sister Ann and she will refund your money.

Christian Formation
VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL 2012: mark your
calendars for June 25 - 29 (9:00 am – noon) for
an exciting adventure as we discover that for God
All Things are Possible! You will not want to miss
the fun: Bible adventures, music, Imagination
Station crafts, games and snacks! VBS is open to children ages 4
through rising 6th grade.
Adult and teen volunteers (rising 7 th graders and up) are needed and
there are many areas to help with: drama, games, Pre-K group,
nursery, daily opening theater, crew leaders! A nursery is available for
the children of volunteers.

OPERATION RICE BOWL: Thanks to all those who turned in their rice
bowls; we collected $730.56 to assist with clean water and food
development programs for the poor around the world!
CHILDREN’S LITURGY OF THE WORD: thank you to our Facilitators
and aides for breaking open the Sunday readings with our children
aged 4 through 2 nd grade! We will not meet over the summer;
Children’s Liturgy of the Word returns in the fall.
FIRST EUCHARIST-FIRST RECONCILIATION SACRAMENTAL
POLICY: Students 2 nd grade and older are invited to prepare for these
sacraments. Students are expected to have regularly participated in
religious education the year prior to sacramental preparation and
families should be participating in the sacramental life of the church
regularly. These are the Diocese of Richmond guidelines.
VIRTUS/ BACKGROUND CHECKS: sessions on June 11 at 6:00 pm
at St. Mary’s, Richmond, June 18 at 6:30 pm at St. Gabriel, Chesterfield
County, June 25 at 6:00 pm at St. Bridget, Richmond. Please register in
advance – there is a link to “VIRTUS Registration” on the St. Ann
website. Call Judy in the CF office if you need help registering. You
must be over 18 to attend a VIRTUS session. All volunteers over 18
who work with children must complete Background checks.
ADULT FORMATION:
BAPTISM PREPARATION: Call Rick Miech in the CF Office to register
for preparation classes and to schedule your child’s Baptism. Parents
please note – you must be registered in the parish and participating in
the sacramental life of the church, that is participating at weekly Mass.

JUSTICE & PEACE
OUR DAILY BREAD FOOD PANTRY - is always in need of donations. This might be a good time to use some of those
dollar coupons that require buying two items. The extra item could be donated to the food pantry. You could be saving
money and donating at the same time. How awesome is that? Think about it. Take advantage of those coupons while
helping others. This week we are low on tuna, canned spinach, red beets, peas and carrots. Also pork and beans, jelly,
spaghetti/sauce and deodorant. However, we will be happy to receive any items you can donate. So, remember to use
those coupons. Thank you for serving the Lord and One Another.
“Jack Lambert - Our Daily Bread Food Pantry Fund. “
Jack Lambert, a longtime volunteer in the Our Daily Bread
Food Pantry, passed away on September 28, 2011. Jack
served with three different Food Pantry directors from
1999 until 2011. When Jack began as a volunteer the Food
Pantry operated out of a closet in Condon Hall and the Director
was Mary Middleton. The pantry opened two afternoons
per week and served 32 clients that year. Denise
Barisano became the Food Pantry Director in 2000 and 209
clients were served. The current director, Evelyn Keesler
took over in 2001. Today, the Food Pantry opens five days
per week and serves nearly 7,000 clients.
Jack served as team leader since 2001. In his capacity as
team leader he was responsible for ensuring that volunteers
on his team were kept informed and available when
needed: frequently contacting CCHASM, the referral organization
concerning clients; three days a week picking
up grocery store donations and driving to Richmond once a
month for the ramen noodle donation! Jack was greatly
loved by all and he loved all those he met in connection
with the Food Pantry.
He was definitely an integral part of the Food Panty’s
growth and was instrumental in setting up the present operation.
He would do anything that was asked of him.
There were times when Jack would threaten to quit the
Food Pantry and this threat became a running joke between
Jack and Evelyn. In the spirit of this running joke,
the Lambert Family has generously donated a significant
amount of money to start the “Jack Lambert - Our Daily
Bread Food Pantry Fund. “
We are grateful to the Family for this contribution made in
Jack’s memory. His spirit of caring will live on as individuals
with needs are assisted by the Food Pantry.
In the future, all contributions to the Food Pantry will be
placed in this Fund. Checks should be made out to “St. Ann
Catholic Church” and designated for the specific support of
the Food Pantry which will help build this Fund and Jack’s
legacy.

A PRAYER FOR RESOLUTION IN IRAN
I pray, we, our community pray, O Lord God,
for a good and just outcome in the discussions that are
currently on going with Iran and five other nations, including
our country. We implore that you inspire each
person in these deliberations to act with a sincere
conscience and a deep respect for humanity.
We ask, Lord God, that the divine hand of your Son,
Jesus, lead the way for all nations to let go of all weapons
of mass destruction---
and for those countries seeking nuclear weapons
who harbor sinister thoughts in the hope of
eliminating their perceived grievousness by acts
of destruction. We pray that Mary, the Queen of Peace,
may shed her light to enkindle greater understanding
among all nations in their hope of living without the fear
of nuclear attack or retaliation.
Each Thursday, from 9:00-9:15am I will invite our community
to join me in prayer in our chapel, and also join
me in a day of fasting for peace in our world —- and for
life that is either denied or taken away from others (i.e.,
abortion and capital punishment).
Gracious wonderful God, we thank you for the end
of our nation’s war in Iraq and the ending war in
Afghanistan. We ask you to continue to comfort those
who suffer loss of life. Heal all the wounded
and bless those who labor for a world without strife.
Bless our soldiers and personnel in these war-torn
countries that they may see the fruits of their labor.

BUILDING
St. Ann Ministry Fair set for June 23-24
Do you enjoy gardening, music, Bible study, group prayer and
meditation, teaching young people about Christ, or journeying
with someone who is exploring the Catholic faith? These
opportunities, among many others, will be the focus of the St. Ann
Ministry Fair scheduled for June 23-24 after each mass.
Coordinators and volunteers from ministries supported by our
church will be on hand to discuss the work they do and answer
questions about ways that you can become involved. At the
Ministry Fair, groups will tell their stories through displays and
photos and provide a brochure or card that visitors can take with
them that gives details on the ministry’s accomplishments. Sign-up
cards will be available for any of our featured ministries.
When you visit the Ministry Fair, you’ll have the chance to
hear about the many ways that our members serve each other—
ministries focused on fellowship and hospitality that bring us
together to celebrate our community. You will also see how we
serve those in our community—ministries that offer food and
clothing to the needy or provide spiritual nourishment to those in
prison.
If you have been wondering about how you may give an hour
or two of your time to help others, or if you are interested in
making new friends, be sure to attend this exciting event. If you
are a new member of our parish and would like to get to know
more about the activities and services that are available at St. Ann,
you will not want to miss the Ministry Fair.
