6 Wingspan campus news April 23, 2012 wingspan.lccc.wy.edu Morris Kemper, original college architect, dies The original architect of Laramie County Community College, Morris D. Kemper, 88, died April 2, 2012, in Cheyenne. Born Aug. 31, 1923, he grew up in Tarkio, Mo., and graduated from the University of Wyoming with an engineering degree. During World War II, he served as a combat engineer and was awarded two Bronze Stars and a Victory Medal. An architect for more that 50 years, Kemper also designed the Civic Center, the Herscheler Building and several building at Warren AFB. Kemper also bred and showed Arabian horses. His funeral was April 5. Those who wish may contribute to the Davis Hospice Center. Radiography club raises money for patients The Laramie County Community College radiography club and Texas Roadhouse hosted a fundraiser April 4. The radiography club served barbecued pulled pork and other selections with the assistance of the Texas Roadhouse. The event raised $930, all of which goes to the Curie Fund which financially assists cancer patients undergoing or have already had radiation therapy treatment. Make video, win one of two in-state scholarships Meridian Trust Federal Credit Union is offering $2,000 in college scholarships to students planning to attend either the University of Wyoming or one of Wyoming’s community colleges in the fall. Meridian Trust will award two separate $1,000 college scholarships for the fall 2012–13 academic year. All applications must be made through video, which must describe how you envision using your college education to achieve your personal goals, help others and benefit society. Penny wars raise more than $350 for clubs The “penny wars” fundraising officially ended March 31. The event started Feb. 15 with a challenge from Phi Beta Lamba and has been going strong since then. The final results totaled $1,137.06. Dental hygiene students raised the most at $373.36 and were followed by DECA, who raised $309.46; Phi Beta Lambda, who raised $289.83; Phi Theta Kappa, who raised $73.61; Rotaract, who raised $66.12, and ASG, who raised $24.68. The Educational Services Staff Council donated its chili cook-off funds equally to all clubs. Phi Theta Kappa wins regional awards Laramie County Community College’s Phi Theta Kappa chapter attended the Phi Theta Kappa international convention in Nashville, April 12–14, and won the regional honors of first place for the Honors in Action Award for Issue No. 5; second place for the Honors in Action Award overall; fifth place for the Distinguished Chapter Award; sixth place for the College Project Award; and Kurt Bratberg won the Distinguished Chapter Officer Award. Four of the LCCC honor students in Phi Theta Kappa ran for regional offices and gave speeches at the Nebraska/Wyoming regional meeting. More than a dozen students from the 22 Phi Theta Kappa chapters across Nebraska and Wyoming ran for the five regional officer positions, and three of the LCCC students who ran won their elections. Bob Tegge was elected president of Phi Theta Kappa’s NE/WY region, Kurt Bratberg, vice president of Wyoming, and Raven Coward, communications officer. Tickets on sale for international dinner An international dinner will be held at Laramie County Community College Friday, April 27, at 6 p.m. in the dining hall. The dinner will focus on offering different dishes from around the world to patrons. Tickets may be bought at the Campus Living and Learning window. They are $10 for adults, $7 for children 9 and under, and six tickets may be bought for $60 at once. Case awaits decision The wrongful termination case of former Laramie County Community College employee James Gollyhorn has been argued and is awaiting decision by a district judge. A former construction trades instructor at the college, Gollyhorn was terminated in spring 2009 when the LCCC Board of Trustees declared a financial emergency, and President Dr. Darrell Hammon eliminated the construction trades program. Gollyhorn claimed the trustees did not follow the correct termination procedure, and after the trustees upheld his termination based on a hearing on the case in June 2010, he took the case to district court. Clubwise High Plains Register Corrections By Josh Reid Contributing Editor The class is offered in the fall and spring semesters. When: Students in the class work together to decide a meeting time and meet once or twice a week. There are no specific positions, but a new instructor Officers: will start in the fall. The club publishes journals, poetry, creative nonfiction, fiction, visual art and music from students and Purposes: community members once a year. Students on the staff are responsible for running the journal from start to finish. The newest issue will be released during a special reading Friday, April 27, at noon in the student lounge. In the story “Day of Diversity: Different cultures celebrated” featured in the April 2 issue of Wingspan, Laramie County Community College Spanish instructor Juan Antonio Bernabeu’s name was incorrectly spelled. Also, Wingspan reported the event was hosted by the LCCC Spanish club; however, there is no longer a Spanish Club. The event was hosted by the International Ambassadors. Also, in the story “Bull rider aims to reclaim title” featured in the April 2 issue of Wingspan, LCCC student athlete Loncey Johnson was identified as being ranked the No. 1 bull rider in the nation, but Johnson was No. 1 in the region. Wingspan regrets these errors.
April 23, 2012 wingspan.lccc.wy.edu campus news Wingspan 7 College seeks to replace staff departures, retirees By Susann Robbins News Editor The academic year of 2011–2012 at Laramie County Community College is coming to an end, and students, staff, administration and faculty are leaving. Some of them will return in the fall, but some will move on. The staff and administration members retiring after this semester are as follows: • Dr. Marlene Tignor, vice president of instruction, after nine years; • Dianne Lowe-Carpenter, director of counseling and campus wellness, and student services, after 22 years; • Ron Bailey, campus safety and security manager, retired after 22 years; • Anna Mata, administrative assistant of counseling and campus wellness, after more than 13 years; • Diane Mordahl, accountant, after 27 years with LCCC; • Ed Bales, manager of facilities operations, after 33 years; • Johnny Tafoya, maintenance technician of mechanical and plumbing, after 34 years; • Grace McDuffie, office assistant in the physical plant, after 17 years; • and Marlene Lyday, accounting technician for student accounts, administration and finance, after serving LCCC for 16 years. Faculty who are leaving LCCC are as follows: • Nancy Cornish, instructor of choral music, director of choral activities, LCCC Collegiate Chorale and Kantorei, after nine years; • Will Golden, equine instructor and horse judging coach, left at the end of the fall 2011 semester and started his new position as equine program manager at Virginia Tech University; • and Celia Teague, instructor for nursing, health science and wellness. Positions waiting to be filled are as follows: • Art instructor; • Four nursing instructors; • Accounting tech-student services; • Math lab coordinator/instructor; • Math ACC instructor; • Music instructor; • Physical plant office assistant; • Office assistant; • Equine instructor; • Education, natural and social sciences division dean; • A health science and wellness division dean; • And vice president of student services.
