Constitutional T h e o ry at the Un i versity <strong>of</strong><br />

Oklahoma College <strong>of</strong> <strong>Law</strong>, the Wi t k i n<br />

L e c t u re on the Su p reme Court at the<br />

<strong>California</strong> State Bar in San Diego, and a<br />

l e c t u re on federalization <strong>of</strong> criminal and civil<br />

law matters at the Federal Bar Association<br />

c o n vention in Cleveland. He participated in a<br />

day-long conference on the Su p reme Court at<br />

Pe p p e rdine <strong>Law</strong> <strong>School</strong>, spoke on the<br />

Su p reme Court and federalism at a confere n c e<br />

at Oklahoma City Un i versity <strong>Law</strong> <strong>School</strong>,<br />

and delive red a paper on the symbolic value <strong>of</strong><br />

the jury at a Brooklyn <strong>Law</strong> <strong>School</strong> confere n c e .<br />

In Oc t o b e r, he spoke to federal public<br />

defenders about the recent Su p reme Court<br />

ruling in Ap p rendi v. New Je r s e y. He also spoke<br />

about pr<strong>of</strong>essional responsibility at the<br />

National Conference <strong>of</strong> Ba n k ruptcy Judges in<br />

Boston and discussed constitutional law at the<br />

Practicing <strong>Law</strong> Institute and at a gathering <strong>of</strong><br />

New Yo rk appellate judges. In Nove m b e r, he<br />

l e c t u red on constitutional law to Fl o r i d a<br />

appellate judges and on free press—fair trial<br />

issues to a Florida meeting <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Organization <strong>of</strong> Court Public In f o r m a t i o n<br />

Of ficers. He spoke on sove reign immunity to<br />

the New Yo rk attorney general’s <strong>of</strong>fice and at<br />

a national workshop for bankruptcy judges in<br />

Atlanta, and he participated in a symposium<br />

on the federal appointments process at<br />

William and Ma ry <strong>Law</strong> <strong>School</strong>. In addition,<br />

he spoke on recent Su p reme Court decisions<br />

at Federal Judicial Center workshops for<br />

federal judges in Washington, D.C., and<br />

s e veral Circuit Court s .<br />

David B. Cruz<br />

David Cruz published “‘The Sexual Fre e d o m<br />

C a s e s’? Contraception, Ab o rtion, Ab s t i n e n c e<br />

and the Constitution” in the Ha rva rd Ci v i l<br />

(2000). He presented “Civil Marriage as a<br />

Ma ry Du d z i a k’s book, Cold War Civil Rights:<br />

Race and the Image <strong>of</strong> American De m o c ra c y,<br />

was published by Princeton Un i versity Pre s s .<br />

Her article “Josephine Ba k e r, Racial Pro t e s t<br />

and the Cold Wa r,” which originally appeare d<br />

in the Jo u rnal <strong>of</strong> American Hi s t o ry, was<br />

included in Global Critical Race Feminism: An<br />

In t e rnational Re a d e r ( New Yo rk Un i ve r s i t y<br />

Press, 2000). She published another art i c l e ,<br />

“ Giving Capital Offense: How America’s<br />

Addiction to the Ultimate Punishment is<br />

Un d e rcutting its Criticism <strong>of</strong> Injustice in<br />

Other Countries,” in the Oc t o b e r / Nove m b e r<br />

issue <strong>of</strong> Civilization Ma g a z i n e. In Se p t e m b e r,<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Dudziak presented “Bi r m i n g h a m ,<br />

Addis Ababa and the Image <strong>of</strong> America:<br />

International Influence on Civil Rights<br />

Reform During the Kennedy Ye a r s” at the<br />

annual meeting <strong>of</strong> the American Po l i t i c a l<br />

Science Association in Washington, D.C. Sh e<br />

was a panelist at the annual meeting <strong>of</strong> the<br />

American Studies Association, where she<br />

discussed how James Bl u e’s film “T h e<br />

Ma rch,” a propaganda piece about the 1963<br />

civil rights Ma rch on Washington, helped<br />

shape international opinion on race in<br />

America. She also chaired a panel on<br />

“ C o n s t ructing Postwar Rights in World Wa r<br />

II America” at the annual meeting <strong>of</strong> the<br />

American Society for Legal Hi s t o ry in<br />

Princeton, N.J., in Oc t o b e r. At <strong>USC</strong>,<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Dudziak moderated a panel discussion<br />

on “Politics, the Su p reme Court and the<br />

Presidential El e c t i o n” sponsored by the <strong>Law</strong><br />

S c h o o l’s chapters <strong>of</strong> the National <strong>Law</strong>ye r s<br />

Guild and the Federalist So c i e t y. She was<br />

recently appointed chair <strong>of</strong> the nominating<br />

committee for the American Society for Legal<br />

Susan Estrich<br />

Susan Estrich, Ro b e rt Kingsley Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>Law</strong> and Political Science, published Sex &<br />

Powe r ( Penguin Putnam). The book was<br />

cate. She discussed her book on the “To d a y”<br />

s h ow, “Politically In c o r rect,” ABC, MSNBC,<br />

CNN, CNBC and local television stations in<br />

eight cities. In Oc t o b e r, Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Estrich and<br />

R i c h a rd Epstein, a pr<strong>of</strong>essor at the Un i ve r s i t y<br />

<strong>of</strong> Chicago <strong>Law</strong> <strong>School</strong>, engaged in an<br />

academic conversation in the Internet magazine<br />

Sl a t e. Their discussion focused on topics<br />

ranging from the presidential campaign and<br />

health care to the minimum wage and capital<br />

punishment. Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Estrich’s expertise in<br />

election law was tapped by numerous national<br />

media outlets during the presidential election.<br />

She has joined the board <strong>of</strong> the Los Angeles<br />

Legal Aid Foundation and served as emcee for<br />

the foundation’s annual dinner. She also spoke<br />

at the Fisher Institute at the Un i versity <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>California</strong>, Be rk e l e y, the Atlanta Wo m e n’s<br />

Foundation, Women <strong>of</strong> Los Angeles —<br />
